Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

This fight is for everything.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Good lord, these people are nuts.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

No one could have predicted…

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

Everybody saw this coming.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

The name of the album by The Who just popped into my head when putting this together. Here are some more which are fun, but didn’t make the previous posts.

Also, here are some videos of Mt. Blanc (they are about half a minute each). There’s no voice over or anything, just views.

Looking around once.

Looking around twice.

Views from the upper gondola.

Views around the lower section of Aiguille du Midi. You can see some climbers coming off the snow and rocks back to where we less intrepid folks are. Embiggen

Regarding the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau, the story goes that the monk, is protecting the young maiden, from the ogre. I guess if you grew up in the mountains before tv, radio, and the internet, maybe you would make up stories about the mountains, too. Let’s carry on from lunch below the peaks.

And we’re off – if you look closely, Mürren is across the valley (we walked around there the day before – it’s lovely! But I didn’t take many pictures there.) Embiggen

Before I continue, I have to note that traveling from Chamonix to Grindelwald, we took six trains. We only had to wait between 5 and 20 minutes for each one.

Männlichen is a mountain that separates Grindelwald from Lauterbrunnen. It has excellent views all around, especially of the mountains that dwarf it, the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. At a pass between here and the higher mountains is Kleine Scheidegg, where a cog railway connects the 2 valleys.

For this hike we took a gondola up from Grindelwald to Männlichen. From there we would walk a short spur trail called the Royal Walk, then turn around and head towards Kleine Scheidegg, then up to where the Eiger Express from Grindelwald drops off people off to get on the train to the Jungfraujoch (a spectacular viewpoint like Aiguille du Midi, but we didn’t go to this one), or to hike or climb or see the Eiger Glacier. After having lunch up there, we continued down to Wengen, a lovely town perched about 1,500 feet above Lauterbrunnen. From there we took a gondola back up to Männlichen and another back down to Grindelwald.

Today we’ll cover up to lunch time.

On The Road – BigJimSlade – Hiking in the Alps, Chamonix and Grindelwald 2022, Schynige Platte here we come

Continuing on to Schynige Platte. We weren’t exactly sure when the last cog train down was, so we booked it through some beautiful terrain. It would’ve been nice to take our time a bit more, but sometimes the end of a long hike can get to be a slog, so having something to push for helped in a way.

We rounded a bend behind a ridge, and left the Faulhorn-type of terrain, and the clouds, behind. Embiggen

On The Road – BigJimSlade – Hiking in the Alps, Chamonix and Grindelwald 2022, First to Schynige Platte – Faulhorn

Leaving Bachalpsee, we headed to Faulhorn for lunch. This is the literal high point of the hike, and it has a small hotel/restaurant, basically like the huts we’ve enjoyed lunching at in the Dolomites.
I would be up until the wee hours reading (Pratchett’s Going Postal – fun stuff!), and then getting 5-6 hrs of sleep before getting up at maybe 8:30am. I had jet lag such that each day I felt like merde du chien (dog poop) each day until about 1pm.But I hadn’t recognized the pattern yet, so after draggin’ my butt for hours from First to Bachalpsee to Faulhorn, all uphill, the lunch up in the increasingly socked-in hut was what the doctor ordered. Rosti, sausage, and bread, with a side of soup was delicious and satisfying. When we carried on with the hike, I felt completely restored and credited the lunch. The next day I pretty much realized that this was the way each day was going – I was only becoming humanoid after lunch. I didn’t get any great pictures of the hut, so here’s a link (but don’t let the clear skies in the pictures fool you – when we were there, a cloud came in and swallowed the joint).

I couldn’t help a selfie here, leaving Bachalpsee, with a window to Wetterhorn. Embiggen

A longish, but super wonderful hike from First (pronounced feersht), to Bachalpsee (that’s a lake), to Faulhorn (a high point with dramatic views), and ending up at Schynige Platte (pronounced Schynige Platte ;-) ), which is serviced by a cog train bringing you back down to the valley near Interlaken, where we could take the regular train back to Grindelwald.

We were going to do a different hike (which we did the next day), but after waiting for a bus for 30 minutes, we realized we totally misread the schedule and it only comes every hour and we had almost another 30 minutes to wait. But about 20 yards away (for that whole 30 minutes) was the gondola up to First, so we improvised, called an audible, and jumped right on the gondola.

This is the First Cliff Walk, to give tourists a rush by walking over emptiness. We didn’t bother, but it probably would’ve been at least kinda fun. We just headed straight out. Embiggen

It did rain on us a little bit on this hike, but nothing serious. But the clouds were changing all the time, with some striking results. Then we have a couple of shots back in town, of our hotel and St. Michel Church.
