Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

Books are my comfort food!

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Roe is not about choice. It is about freedom.

You passed on an opportunity to be offended? What are you even doing here?

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

Celebrate the fucking wins.

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Nothing says ‘pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

Bark louder, little dog.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

If ‘weird’ was the finish line, they ran through the tape and kept running.

Tide comes in. Tide goes out. You can’t explain that.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

This blog will pay for itself.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

White supremacy is terrorism.

On The Road – randy khan – Springtime in Paris – Floating along the Seine

While a lot of the really touristy things in Paris are entirely skippable, here are some that you really should do.  One of them is taking a boat ride on the Seine.  It’s a great way to get off your feet for a while, and it also gives you a different perspective on the city.  There are boats that just do a circuit from roughly the Eiffel Tower to Notre Dame and back, and there also are boats where you sit down for lunch or dinner; we’ve done both.  These photos are from a dinner cruise, arranged by our Parisian friend, as we never would have thought of it ourselves.

Here’s the entrance to the boat slip.  You take steps down the wall that surrounds the river.  (They’re pretty tall – the river is a good 15 feet or more below street level, as you’ll see from later photos.)

On The Road – Mike in Oly – Mt. St. Helens National Volcanic Monument

Mike in Oly

Washington State is rife with incredible natural wonders, but one of the more iconic ones is Mt. St. Helens. It’s eruption in 1980 killed dozens, affected tens of thousands and fascinated millions. It was a boon to science as well, offering a smorgasbord of data in its wake, and remains a focus of study today. Just a couple hours drive for me, it is a favorite destination for day hikes and photography, and to take out-of-town visitors. Here are a selection of photos I’ve taken there over the years.

A view from the Hummocks trail. One of my favorite hikes in the area, it is only 3 miles and covers some really interesting terrain and offers nice views of the mountain.

On The Road – Origuy – Road Trip 2006 Part Two

It has been a couple of weeks since we saw the first part, so here’s a link to Road Trip 2006, Part 1.

Origuy

This is the second set of pictures from my August 2006 road trip. After leaving Wyoming, I went to Denver for a couple of days of sightseeing and then on to Buena Vista. It is a small town in central Colorado, in the shadow of the Collegiate Peaks. I spent a couple of days there at an orienteering event and then started back west. On the way, I stopped at Mesa Verde and Grand Canyon National Parks. The first four pictures are just scenes along the way.

On The Road – Paul in St. Augustine – A National Park Here, a National Park There

Paul in St. Augustine

A bit of Hawaii, Monument Valley, and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.

I spent a week visiting Hawaii, spending time in Honolulu to hike to the top of Diamond Head, boating along the Na Pali Coast State Park on Kauai, and Maui to take the Road to Hana, tour the Island via helicopter, and visit Haleakalā National Park. The crest of the volcano is at 10,023 feet above sea level. When I visited in 2004, you would encounter dozens of bicyclists at the top, waiting for the sunrise. Which meant that you had to avoid them as you made the drive down the volcano.

Origuy

In August 2006, I took a road trip through some of the Western US to go to orienteering events near Laramie, WY and Buena Vista, CO, and to see some sights along the way. My first stop was at Timpanogos Cave National Monument, in Utah’s Wasatch Mountains. Timpanogos is actually three caves, connected by man-made tunnels. It’s a bit of a hike from the parking up to the cave entrance, but once you’re there the cave tour isn’t too strenuous, although a bit of a squeeze in a few places.

On The Road – way2blue – Cairngorms National Park, Scotland

After our visit to the Outer Hebrides, we took the ferry from Stornaway to Ullapool, and drove to Ballater in the Scottish Highlands, to meet up with a friend who lives in Aberdeen. We spent the next day hiking a loop in eastern Cairngorms National Park, Aberdeenshire. Fairly decent weather, just a spot of drizzle. The start of our hike was such a gradual uphill that I was astonished to see how high we were as we circled back. Long, long downhill to Loch Muick, where Queen Victoria’s hunting lodge (Glas-allt Shiel) is located, within the boundary of the royal Balmoral Estate. My maternal grandmother was born in Aberdeenshire, so a wee bit of connecting with the landscapes where she grew up before she immigrated to British Columbia as a young adult.

Here are a few more shots from our trip through 8 National Parks in 8 days, November 2018. The beauty, grandeur and sheer magnitude of these places cannot be adequately described with words.
