Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Come on, man.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

The revolution will be supervised.

Americans barely caring about Afghanistan is so last month.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Infrastructure week. at last.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

This fight is for everything.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

A last alliance of elves and men. also pet photos.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

A Senator Walker would be an insult to the state and the nation.

Good Morning All,

This weekday feature is for Balloon Juicers who are on the road, travelling, etc. and wish to share notes, links, pictures, stories, etc. from their escapades. As the US mainland begins the end of the Earth day as we measure it, many of us rise to read about our friends and their transient locales.

So, please, speak up and share some of your adventures, observations, and sights as you explore, no matter where you are. By concentrating travel updates here, it’s easier for all to keep up-to-date on the adventures of our fellow Commentariat. And it makes finding some travel tips or ideas from 6 months ago so much easier to find…

Have at ’em, and have a safe day of travels!

Should you have any pictures (tasteful, relevant, etc….) you can email them to [email protected] or just use this nifty link to start an email: Start an Email to send a Picture to Post on Balloon Juice

Without further ado, a full set from Mallorca, courtesy of OzarkHillbilly:

show full post on front page

A few pics of one of the more visited sights in Mallorca, the Catedral de Santa María de Palma de Mallorca. Begun in 1229 by Jaume I (King James I of Aragon) it was not finished until 1601. Repairs began in 1602 and continue to this day. From Wikipedia:

*”Built by the Crown of Aragon on the site of a Moorish-era mosque, the cathedral is 121 metres long, 55 metres wide and its nave is 44 metres tall. By way of comparison, the height of the central nave reaches 33m in Notre Dame de Paris , 38m in Reims, 42m in Notre-Dame d’Amiens and 48m in Saint-Pierre de Beauvais, the highest of all Gothic cathedrals.”*

I’ve seen all of those in France, but never made it to Spain or any Mediterranean islands.

The 1st pic is of the front of the Cathedral, and the 2nd is a close up of
the same doors showing a little bit of the mastery of the stone carvers
that I have found throughout my wanderings about this fabled isle.

The 3rd pic is of the nave, where resides the main altar, as well as the
Rose Window and a…. candelabra? whose purpose I am unsure of. (take note
of the X-mas tree laying on the floor awaiting…. erection)

Just…wow! Such a great photograph in a challenging environment!

The 4th pic is of one of the many crypts in the floor of the cathedral.
There were many crypts in the cathedral, both above and below the floor. A
number of the ones in the floor bore the “skull and crossbones”. Due to the
eras this church was built, I theorize that it is because they were plague
victims, but for all I know it is actually indicative of a curse being put
upon the inhabitant or those who might disturb the bones of those there
interred.

The 5th pic is of a “relic”, the ulna of a martyr or a saint. I do not
remember who it was (nor do I care, the Church has a Saint/martyr for every
season and every reason, usually more than one) and obviously enough, to
Catholics at least, the words “Rest in Peace” mean nothing. To me it means
Catholics are really weird. But as a failed Catholic, I already knew that.

Neat! I’ve only seen dark, semi-coagulated phials of ancient blood.

The last 2, are of the Cathedral from the far side of the man made lake
underneath the old sea wall, one in day light, and one from during my
previously mentioned 3 am stroll around the bay. The first is by far the
better picture, but the 2nd…. there is something about the lighting that
captures my imagination. I see things.

Thank you OzarkHillbilly, and do send more. I’m sorry it took so long to get to these magnificent pictures! Folks, he went through over 700 shots to amass this great contribution!

As always, we welcome your pictures, and have a wonderful day, whether you’re travelling the world or just your front yard!

More great stuff from Le Comte de Monte Crist fka Edmund Dantes:

This was a nice little snorkel trip and rest stop at a place accessible only by boat, as I remember.

My camera battery kept crapping out (didn’t do it anywhere else on the trip, just in the catacombs). Once the Paris cemeteries filled up, all the older bodies were exhumed and the bones lined up underground in a macabre setting. I took several lousy dark photos without flash (camera lighting is prohibited in order to preserve the bones), but with the battery issues the camera shut down on me. The first time it happened, I didn’t think to check the settings on restore, and it defaulted to flash. This is my single illegal photo, one which actually shows the walls as they are.

When: April 2010
Where: St Sulpice

This is the plaque marking the Rose Line (the old Prime Meridian) in This classic Paris church. This was featured in the DaVinci Code.

Funny story – I got to see the gypsy shift change here. My wife and her sister had gone to meet their aunt and her husband at the Pompidou for lunch and to arrange a dinner time family get-together (they lived in Igny at the time, and have sense moved to Strasbourg).  Me, the brother in law and kids were supposed to catch up with them at St Sulpice and got the schedule botched. Our first try at the church it was 2 pm, we saw a woman begging with an English lettered beggar sign, and she had a child that was filthy, two or three years old that you would not want anywhere close to your pockets (I watched the kid scrabbling at tourist pockets).  Anyway, shortly before 3 pm, we came back. At a couple of minutes before three, we are standing outside. Up comes a hound gypsy woman with a hand lettered beggar sign in English. First gypsy girl leaves and the second one takes her place. Kid does a double shift.

Too damned funny.

When – August 2012
Where: Key West

This was on the Western Union, a cable layer which no longer sails. I was on a guy’s diving trip.
Evenings aboard her were magical. They’d serve food and drinks and play sea chantys.
That evening, while stars were in the sky, we saw a thunderstorm about 10 nm away.

When – October 2009 (I think)
Where- Churchill, Manitoba, Canada
This was a Natural Habitat trip. It was kind of a beast to get to – it was as far to Churchill as it is from home to Venezuela.  It isn’t quite to the Arctic Circle, but it is on the Churchill River/Hudson Bay confluence just south of the boundary to Nunavut.
In Churchill prior to the ice forming on Hudsons Bay, the polar bears get super hungry. They come into town to scavenge.  When that happens, they tranquilize them and helicopter them about 50 miles away. There was a mother and child this time dangling under the helo.

Much more tomorrow and later this week. Have a good one, travel safely, and do send in pictures from your adventures and the sights you see. We all grow from that sharing.

Both PCs are “down” as Windows 10 Creator’s Update applies. My Linux machines don’t have any Balloon Juice stuff on them, and I’m on my iPad so no pictures this morning – unless I wake up early and restless!
Have a great weekend, and for those of you travelling, try to enjoy your time away from home!

Hopefully Major Major Major Major will share more of his fantastic trip.

Don’t forget, Federal, etc. taxes are due April 18!  Thank you DC – they have a holiday structured to add an additional day to the tax due date because citizens of Washington, D.C. pay Federal income taxes,  are not residents of any state, are controlled by the US House, and have no real representation in Congress. As a former resident, I can tell you that the people who live in our Nation’s Capitol have Taxation without Representation. And so it’s nice that they extend a finger to the Feds on Tax day, if they can.

A short set from otmar to start out the week:

Where it was taken: Prague
When: last Sunday
Other notes or info about the picture: Last year’s Christmas gift to my wife was a weekend trip to Prague. The train from Vienna takes about 4 hours, so we spent almost two full days sightseeing. This set of pictures is from Sunday noon, where we toured the Jewish quarter of the old town.
1: Cemetery
2: Klaus Synagogue
3: Oldnew Synagogue
4: Spanish Synagogue

And I likely messed up the pictures vs descriptions. Except for the first one; I’m somewhat confident that it is, indeed, a cemetery.

Thanks otmar, I know many of us look forward to your next set.

Much more tomorrow – have a great Monday, and for those observing Passover on Tuesday, Chag Sameach!
