Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the gop

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

Let’s finish the job.

GOP baffled that ‘we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

Be a traveling stable for those who can’t find room at the inn.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

President Biden is doing good where he can, and getting it done.

We still have time to mess this up!

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

“woke” is the new caravan.

“Cheese and Kraken paired together for the appetizer trial.”

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. don’t touch it.”

Can we lighten up on the doomsday scenarios?

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

This post is in: On The Road, Open Threads, Readership Capture

Good Morning All,

This weekday feature is for Balloon Juicers who are on the road, travelling, etc. and wish to share notes, links, pictures, stories, etc. from their escapades. As the US mainland begins the end of the Earth day as we measure it, many of us rise to read about our friends and their transient locales.

So, please, speak up and share some of your adventures, observations, and sights as you explore, no matter where you are. By concentrating travel updates here, it’s easier for all to keep up-to-date on the adventures of our fellow Commentariat. And it makes finding some travel tips or ideas from 6 months ago so much easier to find…

Have at ’em, and have a safe day of travels!

Should you have any pictures (tasteful, relevant, etc….) you can email them to [email protected] or just use this nifty link to start an email: Start an Email to send a Picture to Post on Balloon Juice

Hope you had a great weekend – pictures after the fold…

show full post on front page

First, from BillinGlendaleCA

Where it was taken: Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History, Los Angeles, CA
When: March 6, 2017
Other notes or info about the picture:  This is a model of downtown Los Angeles in the late 1930’s.  It was a depression era WPA project to assist the city in urban renewal(they ended up clearing the upper left portion of the city(Bunker Hill) in the 50’s and 60’).  The model was apparently much larger but parts were destroyed.  This view is from the southwest, looking northeast; the streets in downtown LA are laid out in Spanish colonial style as opposed to the north/south axis you see in most American cities.

Wow. Thank you! I can’t wait to see more of your work. I know you post links here and there, you can just do that and I’ll grab them from online and save you the bother.

That goes for anyone out there, you can send a link if you have the picture  online already. I don’t mean to make the process difficult for anyone, and I know that sending a link to a full-size picture is easier than sending the picture via email, so please send it as you wish and I’ll work with it.

Next up, from bilger:

Where it was taken: Vieux Habitants, Base Terre, Guadeloupe
When: 3-8-’17
Other notes or info about the picture: Been wandering around this island for a couple months. This place is amazing.

Just beautiful. Given the upcoming storm,  I wish I could frolic in that stream!

Next up, from lurker Vicki Delany, something notable:

Flight over Mount Everest. March 8, 2017.

Wow, the roof of the world! I’ve seen many of the world’s great mountain chains, some of the great mountains, but that’s…just…wow! Travel safely – I hope you send more pictures from your travel(s)!

And finally for this pre-storm Monday morning, from otmar:

Where it was taken: Vienna University Observatory
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vienna_Observatory
When: Friday night
Other notes or info about the picture: The Vienna Observatory runs a series of monthly lectures for the general public. This Friday, my sister spoke about the hunt for exoplanets. Afterwards we visited the grand refractor, which was the largest telescope of its kind back in 1878.

What an amazing looking piece of history! When I was a kid in school, we were lucky enough to be invited to the US Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C. a few nights for observations, but I don’t remember it looking so neat. Thanks, Otmar – and please, send more!

And that goes for all of you out there, throughout the world. We know there are readers, so if you’re travelling or just living overseas or somewhere “different”, send a picture or two. I know I speak for many readers who love to see what you see.

And without further ado, pictures (and Poco!) after the fold!

First, from otmar’s trip to Malta:

Where it was taken: La Valetta, Malta
When: 2 weeks ago

Other notes or info about the picture: Here are some pics about the trip he mentioned in a previous thread, where he wrote:

As I type this I am sitting at the gate of Malta airport, waiting for the plane back to Vienna. I spent the last two days at a meeting organised by the presidency of the EU, which is held by Malta.

Fun days. Valletta is definitely worth a visit, the fortifications and the churches are impressive.

Exquisite!

And now, from Le Comte de Monte Cristo, fka Edmund Dantes:

Where – Great Wall, with Mrs Dantes
When – October 2016

Where- Summer Palace, Beijing
When -10/16

And now, off to Italy (still same commenter)

Where-Monterosso, Cinque Terre, Italy
When-5/16

Where: Our Balcony, Monterosso, Cinque Terre, Italy
When: 5/16

Where – Siena, Italy
When -5/16

Where – Don Ernestos, Puerto Morelos, Quintano Roo, Mexico
When – 9/16

And one more continental shift!
Where: New Orleans
When: 4/1

Finally, some more from quinerly:

Where it was taken: When: Commenter nym: Other notes or info about the picture:
Poco at Lone Rock Beach, Utah (Lake Powell) on Sunday. As I understand it, it’s the only beach you can drive on and camp on on Lake Powell. We drove right down to the water and scoped it out for another trip.

Third picture is of a tree that Poco tried to sneak up on to pee on in Bryce Canyon NP. I snapped the picture just as it tried to run away.?

Lots of goodies, after the fold

show full post on front page

First, a great picture. I used to recreate right behind(and used to cut through the property occasionally!) where ENIAC was created, right near American University in Washington, D.C. I think I was the only person in  that group who knew some important computer history had happened just a few feet from where we were. Seeing this inside view of such an important part of the evolution of our technology is so utterly cool!

Where it was taken: Outside Boelter Hall 3420, ULCA, Los Angeles, CA
When: March 6, 2017
Commenter nym: BillinGlendaleCA
Other notes or info about the picture: This is the room where the first message was sent on the Internet in 1969.  The refrigerator sized box was one of the first routers built.

Birthplace of the Internet.

And next from evap

Where it was taken: Aachen, Germany
When: March 4, 2017
Other notes or info about the picture: The first picture is a detail inside the Rathaus (town hall) in Aachen, Germany.  It was Charlemagne’s palace back in the day.

Where: Oberwolfach, Germany
When: March 6, 2017
Other notes:  The second picture was taken from the top of a hill near the conference center where I am staying, in the Black Forest region in Germany. The closed medium-sized town is Strassburg. It’s been cold and rainy all the time, so the picture is a bit gloomy.

I suspect that, come late summer, those forested hillsides are filled with delicious mushrooms just ripe for the picking!

Thanks evap, travel safely!

And, from wataguy

Where it was taken: Taipei airport
When: 0740 8 March
Other notes or info about the picture: On my way to Cambodia. That’s not me in the picture.

Can’t wait to see some pictures from your trip!

And finally for today, from frosty (and yes, lots more coming tomorrow!):

We were on the road for a month and I’ve got lots of photos of beaches, bikes, and critters, but these are from the most amazing thing we saw.
This was from one of the Ringling Museums in Sarasota. It’s a 3,800 SF model of the circus from the 1920’s. I was a model maker in my youth (ships in bottles) and I can’t believe the detail that went into it. The guy who made it, Howard Tibbals, started in 1963 and he says he’s not done yet.
I didn’t get pictures of the 55 flatcars, hundreds of circus wagons and horses and everything else he modeled. The crowning touch is that the whole model can be put away in the wagons and flatcars, just like the real thing. Holy cow!!!
The pictures are an overview from the second floor balcony(5th), then a wide shot and close up of the big top(1st and 2nd) and commissary (3rd and 4th). Then finally the one every model maker has to model:  The dog looking at a hydrant (6th).

Hope you like them! It’s not Poco, but at least there’s a dog!

— frosty

Neat! Sometime I’ll have to post some pictures I took of models in a Japanese hotel. Quite amazing work – great photos – thanks for sharing!

Lots of pictures folks, please continue after the fold!

show full post on front page

First, from planetjanet:

Where it was taken: Dubrovnik, Croatia
When: March 4, 2017
Other notes or info about the picture: Fortress Lovrijenac, also known as Blackwater Bay in Game of Thrones.

I am a on a business trip to Dubrovnik, also known as Kings Landing. They are actively filming “Game of Thrones” here. I have one picture attached of them filming one scene.

And now..some pics from BellyCat and kitten!

Where it was taken: Sarasota, FL
When: yesterday and today
Other notes or info about the picture: First encounter for 1 year old BellyKitteh with the ocean!
Also, these kind folks helped store and repair our Airstream when one of the shock mounts broke. Loved the chickens and Ringling Bros circus stuff.
The welding shop, next door, had tons of demolition derby cars and mud-bog whackadoodle projects, such as a four-wheel-drive limo (because, why not?). Owned by a 17-year-old kid who was great!
Can’t wait to see more from your trip!
And finally for this morning, a submission from arieve (mostly lurker). Seeing such a majestic creature literally brings tears to my eyes. Thank you!
Where it was taken: Jaipur, India
When: January 24
Other notes or info about the picture: This is Sampa, a rescue elephant in Jaipur, India. She¹s 52 years old, and after decades of carrying tourists up and down the mountain to the Amber Fort, she is now retired on a farm called Elefantastic outside Jaipur, where she has friends and nice food, and besotted tourists can visit and give her treats and take her for walks.
I’m still sorting through pictures from a recent trip to Abu Dhabi-India-Jordan, but I’ve been loving this feature so I wanted to send some pics.
arieve, thank you for this submission, and when you find some more keepers or travel again, keep us in mind! I know that many of us love to see the world through others’ eyes.
Have a great day everybody! I hope to share some more pictures tomorrow. And since John is travelling sometime this week, perhaps he’ll submit a travel picture or two!
