Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

On The Road – lashonharangue – Galapagos

lashonharangue

Back in February my spouse and I went to the Galapagos to tick off one of our bucket list items. We flew into the port city of Quayaquil and then, after a day to recuperate from the flights to Ecuador, flew on to the island of San Cristobal. We met other folks going on the same ship that we had booked passage on, the Natural Paradise. Herded onto a bus, we then drove to the nearby port and got onto small inflatables that motored us to the ship. We got settled into our cabin as the ship went to our first early afternoon visit, a tiny uninhabited island called Kicker Rock, just off the coast of San Cristobal.

The ship circled around the rock so we could see it from all directions.

Two more submissions, mostly of some random photos that didn’t fit in any of the other categories.

Post Office Bay, on Floreana.

Whalers used to have a barrel here where they would leave letters to be picked up by ships on their way back to Europe or the United States. It’s still used, and the guides read off the list of destinations for the postcards other visitors have left. If you take one of the postcards you promise you will deliver it to the recipient.

They didn’t have any awaiting delivery to New York, so I didn’t take one, but I did drop one off, addressed to a friend of mine in Manhattan. And two years later, it was delivered.

I’m skipping ahead to Genovesa, the last island we visited, because I have to start focusing on schoolwork rather than old pictures. Genovesa is known as Bird Island, and it is an amazing place. I would love to go back there.

Genovesa is a tiny, horseshoe-shaped island surrounding a volcanic caldera which forms Darwin Bay. There’s rock and mangrove and lots and lots of birds.

Santa Cruz, unlike the other islands we’d visited previously, is inhabited. There are plantations in the highlands that have been there since before the park was created, and Puerto Ayora looks like any other tourist spot, with restaurants, hotels, and shops.

We were told that the fish market in Puerto Ayora was definitely worth visiting. This blue-footed booby clearly thought so as well. I love the “Nothing to see here, folks” attitude while he tries to get close to the fish.

Still on Española Island, now at Punta Suarez, otherwise known as Iguanaville.

Sunrise off Española, and the crew getting the zodiacs ready for the days excursions.

There are only two seasons in the Galapagos, the wet season and the garua, or misty season. We were there during at the end of the garua. The mist burned off as the day got warmer, but by the end of the day it was sitting overhead like a sun hat, with a ribbon of clear blue sky circling the horizon.
