Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

Petty moves from a petty man.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

These are not very smart people, and things got out of hand.

People are weird.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

If you thought you’d already seen people saying the stupidest things possible on the internet, prepare yourselves.

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

We will not go back.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

I have other things to bitch about but those will have to wait.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

When you’re in more danger from the IDF than from Russian shelling, that’s really bad.

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

Angel Match Updates and More

This post is in: Elections 2024, Political Fundraising, Targeted Political Fundraising 2023-24

Just two weeks from today we will have done everything we can do to have a positive impact on the election.

Barring unforeseen circumstances, I would guess that Friday will be the last day we can donate to candidates and expect that it could have an impact on Nov 5.  So including today, we essentially have 4 days left to help our candidates in the sidebar.  At that point, no matter what the totals, we’ll be done with that phase and the candidate thermometers will come down. No commitments were made, so it’s not the end of the world if we don’t meet those goals – I just figured that $5k was a meaningful amount for the House Races and that $2k was a meaningful amount for the smaller races.

We have passed the halfway mark on our fundraising for PA, WI, and OH – we are at 55%!

I’ll add Angel match information in comment #1, and I’ll update it throughout the day.

This is hands-down the most watchable / readable piece about Project 2025 that I have seen all year.

Please share this video far and wide.

I’ve seen this all over twitter, but someone just linked to the TikTok, though I don’t recall who.  So if it was you, take a bow.

If anyone finds a YouTube version, please link to it in the commutes so I can add it here.  Thanks, Old School!

TikTok does this weird thing on my computer where it switches what video plays, so here is the URL for watching and sharing if the one below switches out.   Link

Answering Your Fundraising Questions

by WaterGirl|  October 21, 202410:00 am| 59 Comments

This post is in: Political Action, Politics, Targeted Political Fundraising 2023-24

There were several questions in the recent fundraising thread and I thought I would answer them here.

Current Angel matches

Remember, for most of the state house races, this is about trying to get a majority, or stopping the other side from keeping their supermajority, or defeating a particularly odious Republican.

And of course we need to win back the House!!!  The 3 House seats will help us do that.

PA Matt Cartwright $800 ($50)
$330.00 left

PA State Races $1k
$265 left

WISC Rebecca Cooke $1k
$230 left

WISC State Races $500
complete

OHIO Greg Landsman $1k
$690 left

OHIO State Races $600
$180 left

Once these matches are met, we’ll be at about $20,000 overall, which is halfway to our goal. A total of $41,000 would finish off all 6 of the state thermometers.

Texas and Florida?

Both of the Democratic senate races – FL and TX – are rolling in $$ from all over the country.  Pulling for them, for sure, but those are not races where our money could have an impact.

More Candidates after this round?

Probably not, unless one of our organizations contacts us about a candidate that could really use our help.

In 2022, we raised about $160,000 for candidates, with $73k going directly to US House candidates, and a couple of senate races, and a lot of key “election protection” races where Governors, Secretaries of State, and Attorneys General were up for elections in swing states.

This is a very different year for candidates – there is a ton of Democratic money sloshing around in almost every race for the US House.

So as much as we would love to help certain House and Senate candidates, it’s like last time around – we didn’t donate to Beto, or to Stacey Abrams, or to other candidates we admire and want to see elected.  All those races are getting national money from all over the country – so while it might feel good to give to them, it’s not strategic.  They will win or they will lose, but our money would not make a difference.

Four Directions

We aren’t trying to reach a specific goal for them, so that thermometer will just hang out in the sidebar – for people to donate, or not.

Anything being donated through the 4D thermometer will surely be going to pay for folks who are doing the work on the ground.

More Angel matches?

If anyone wants to be an angel, at this stage of the game – being so close to the election and me being without my laptop – I think we would ask the angels to add their dollars up front and let people know that any amount will be matched until the thermometer reaches a certain amount.

What’s next?

Beyond what we’ve got going thermometer-wise, I think we’ll hold our powder – all of our organizations know that if something comes up, we are available for FLASH fundraising.  Like we did for Four Directions Nevada with the freak snowstorm on election day.  Or if the North Carolina folks were to contact us to say that if they had X more dollars they could keep Y more canvassers on for ballot curing, I’m sure we would respond to that in a heartbeat!

Any other questions?

Let us know in the comments and I’ll answer them.

Quick note: If any of what I’ve written sounds cold or heartless, believe me when I say it’s a real struggle sometimes to keep the focus and not get sucked in to helping candidates we love.  This weekend, one of our angels put us in touch with Greg Landsman (at my request) in case he could point us to some House candidates who might need our help.

He came back with a list of 5 – most of whom we love and supported in 2022. Marcy Kaptur, etc. But if they have 1.5 million in unspent funds, then our money won’t make a difference.

It’s so hard to say no, but our focus is strategic fundraising, and I try really hard to stay true to that.  It is hard sometimes!!!

I dare you to watch even just the first 7 minutes of this video from Simon Rosenberg and not come away being better able to shake off the bullshit narratives and the internet angst, and not come away absolutely determined to work even harder in these next 18 days.

I dare you.   I double-dog dare you.

From Hopium:
– Watch my new video on 2024 election – Working Hard and Closing Strong – w/special guests Tom Bonier & Ruben Gallego
– 3 weeks out I’d much rather be us than them
– Meanwhile Trump is unfit, unwell, unraveling and gone full burnt orange

Another option for viewing the video – You can find the video at his Hopium Chronicles page.

I am asking you to watch at least part of this video and then share in the comments some tidbits from this video.

This is NOT an open thread.

This is a let’s kick some political ass thread.

Tell us what you’re up to in this fight.

This is the most important part. ⬆️

Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Ohio, oh my!

On Wisconsin!

What’s next after we finish North Carolina?

Our next fundraising push will focus on the crucial states of Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Ohio, two of which are swing states and all of which are of great personal interest to many Jackals.

There is a ton of money sloshing around the national races, and few opportunities at this point for our contributions to make a difference.  But there are local races where we can help!

We’ve selected these local candidates based in part on recommendations and research from Jackals on the ground, as well as consulting the vote maximizer website and funding disclosure sites, among other sources.

We are also focused on US House races – Matt Cartwright in PA, Rebecca Cooke in WI, and Greg Landsman in OH.

Important note: We’ll set goals for each thermometer because ActBlue requires a goal – our rule of thumb will be at least $2,000 for a state race and at least $5,000 for a House seat.  But this will be different from the fundraising for organizations where we let them know what we are trying to raise for them so they can plan for the funds.

show full post on front page

PENNSYLVANIA

The Democrats hold a narrow one seat majority in the State House of Representatives (102-101).  It’s vital that the Dems retain control if Governor Shapiro is to have any chance of enacting his agenda.  We’re focusing on four women – all Democratic challengers from different parts of the state – each of whom could use the money.

The PA House

Meet the PA State House candidates:
https://annarthomas.com/meet-anna/
https://www.annapayne4staterep.com/meet-anna
https://www.hadleyforpa.com/about
https://saraagerton.com/about-sara/

Meet Anna Thomas (HD 137), who is challenging incumbent election denier Joe Emrich is the Lehigh Valley, arguably the state’s swingiest region.

Our second Anna is Anna Payne (HD 142 – suburban Philadelphia), who is challenging first term incumbent Republican Joe Hogan.  Anna credits the ACA with saving her life after she was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis.

Hadley Haas (HD-44, Pittsburgh area), who is challenging election-denying incumbent Valerie Gaydos.

And Sara Agerton (HD-88 – Harrisburg area) is a social worker and borough council member who is taking on incumbent Sheryl Delozier.

The PA Senate

Meet the PA State Senate candidates:
https://nicoleforpa.com/meet-nicole/
https://jimwertz.org/about/

The Republicans hold a larger majority in the state Senate (28-22), making a flip less likely.   Many of these races are well-funded.  However, there are a couple races in strategic state Senate districts where these down ballot races could help drive turnout.  We’ve targeted the PA Senate candidates:

Democrat Nicole Ruscitto (SD 37 – Pittsburgh area) is seeking to unseat election-denying incumbent Republican Devlin Robinson.  Nicole, a former teacher and councilperson, is focusing her campaign on reproductive freedom.

Jim Wertz (SD 49 – Erie) is taking on incumbent Republican Daniel Laughlin.  Erie is definitely a swing district, as evidenced by the recent visits by Presidential candidates.

Let’s go for a stronger majority in the PA House of Representatives, add a couple of good folks to the Senate, and help win Pennsylvania!  Reverse coattails!!!

Donate

WISCONSIN

Next up, Wisconsin.  Wisconsin has a Democratic Governor.  But thanks to aggressive Republican gerrymandering, the GOP controls the 99-member Assembly by a margin of 64 – 34, and the 33 member Senate by a margin of 22-10 (with one vacancy).   The map was perhaps the worst example of gerrymandering in the country – with many districts having non-contiguous detached pieces of territory.

But it’s a new day!  Thanks to litigation (remember the Supreme Court special election?) and the efforts of Democratic Governor Tony Evers, the “Fair Maps” Act passed in February.  Fair Maps required the drawing of entirely new lines that finally gave Wisconsin voters a shot at fair representation.  A Democratic majority in either body is within the realm of possibility.

Can Democrats Win Wisconsin Assembly?  Key Races Could Decide Control  (Wisconsin Public Radio)

We all know that the WisDems are well-organized and well-financed, and are dominating the Republicans in fundraising for state-level offices.   But there are at least four races that could use our help.  Three of these races are in the Green Bay area, Wisconsin’s third largest metro area and arguably its swingiest.

Generally speaking, these were chosen to support awesome candidates and get rid of odious republicans in super close races where our money can make a difference.

Meet the WI in-state candidates:
https://www.wallforwisconsin.com/bio
https://www.yeeforwi.com/meet-yee/
https://www.standwithspaude.com/ [most memorable ears since Obama!] https://www.christyforwi.com/meet-christy/

Senate District 30 (Green Bay).  Thanks to redistricting, there is no incumbent in this race.  The Democrat, Jamie Wall is a local boy made good and a former Rhodes Scholar.  His Republican opponent, Jim Rafter, is a bland – but not Trumpy – local official.

Assembly District 85 (Wausau).  Democrat Yee Leng Xiong, a non-profit leader and community activist, is taking on Republican incumbent Patrick Snyder, who has been in office since 2017. With the new districts, the 85th has the closest margins in the state, with a D+ 0.1 registration. Yee would make history as Wisconsin’s first representative of Hmong descent.

Assembly District 89 (Green Bay).  This is also a new district with no incumbent.  The Democrat, a young gay local prosecutor named Ryan Spaude, is taking on Republican Pat Buckley, a former cop and County Supervisor.

Assembly District 88 (Green Bay).  Another open seat!  Democrat Christy Welch, was “called to action,” in her own words, by the Dobbs decision.  She successfully transformed and energized the Brown County Democratic party as its chair.  The Republican has one thing going for him:  Name recognition.  His name is Ben Franklin.

It’s a brand-new ballgame in Wisconsin, so no one really knows what will happen – let’s do what we can to build a Wisconsin trifecta!

Donate

OHIO

Ohio jackals have watched their state go from purple to red – and then get redder.  While the Buckeye State is almost certainly a Trump lock, and the Republicans have a trifecta in the State House, there’s still work to be done:  Denying the GOP a super-majority in the State House of Representatives next session.

The 99-member Ohio House is split 67-32 and the State Senate 26-7 in favor of the Republicans.  While the Senate super-majority is beyond repair, there’s hope for the House.  According to the Brennan Center for Justice, all but 14 house seats are uncontested or uncompetitive.  We’re targeting three of those.

Ohio in-state candidates, come on down!
https://jamieforohio.org/meet-jamie
https://rachaelmorocco.com/
https://www.verbusforus.com/meet-lesley

House District 69 (east of Columbus).  Democratic challenger Jamie Hough is a young (37) travel center manager and activist, who campaign is focused on reproductive rights, school funding and affordable housing.  Jamie is gay.  The incumbent, Kevin Miller, is a retired state trooper whose website emphasizes the right to life, the right to bear arms, and “freedom from government overreach.”  A total nut job.

House District 60 (Delaware County, north of Columbus).  Democrat Rachael Morocco is a young (42) pediatric physician challenging the incumbent Republican, Brian Lorenz, who was appointed to the seat last year following the death of the incumbent.

House District 86 (NW of Columbus).  Democrat Lesley Verbus, 41, is running on a platform of reproductive freedom, alternative energy and “responsible” gun policy.  The incumbent Republican, Tracy Richardson, is an anti-abortion extremist.  She sponsored an abortion ban with medically ridiculous requirements such as requiring a doctor to “attempt to re-implant an ectopic pregnancy into the uterus” to avoid criminal charges.  Just typing that out makes me want to bang my head against the wall.

Are these candidates a long shot?  It’s hard to tell.  But this is an investment in the future of Ohio. These are promising young candidates (two women and a gay man) with the potential to lead a return to sanity in Ohio.  There is an initiative on the Ohio ballot that would establish an independent redistricting process.  If Ohio were to achieve fairly drawn districts for 2026, these candidates will be poised to benefit.

Let’s deny the GOP a supermajority in the Ohio State House of Representatives next session.

HOUSE RACES in PA, WI and OH

Matt Cartwright (PA-0 8) – Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Matt is the incumbent, but is facing a strong challenge from Rob Bresnahan, who is running on the usual blather about the border wall and fentanyl.

Rebecca Cooke (WI-03) – Eau Claire and Western WI.
Rebecca is running a strong campaign against election-denying loon Derrick Van Orden.  Rebecca has lots of rural farm cred (grew up on a dairy farm) and founded a non-profit to support and empower female entrepreneurs.  She has a very good chance to retire Van Orden.

Donate

Greg Landsman (OH-01) – Cincinnati.
Greg is a first term incumbent who we supported in 2022.  Greg is facing a challenge by Republican Orlando Sonza.  The district leans Democratic, but is still considered very competitive and a possible Republican pickup.

Zoom With Four Directions Set for Thursday at 7 pm ET 1

As you can see, we are in the home stretch for North Carolina!

Yesterday afternoon I asked our 4 remaining Angels if they would be up for pre-matching, and they all were.  Our Balloon Juice angels for this final stretch were:  Patrick G, anonymous, Friend of the blog, Andrew, and anonymous.  Thank you all!

We completed NC Black Alliance!  We have about $3,500 to go on NCAAT, and about $3,000 to go on our NC Candidates.

Of course, the pre-matching means that we have to get the rest of the way without any Angels.

On the plus side, that means you don’t need to report your donation – unless you want to inspire other people – because everything is pre-matched.

We can do this, right?

Early voting starts in North Carolina on Thursday morning.

Once we knock these off, we have some statehouse races in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Wisconsin.  We’ll probably try to raise $2k apiece, which can go a long way at the end of the cycle for social media ads and literature to leave at doors, etc.

I cannot believe we are less than 3 weeks away from election day.
