Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

I’d Suggest Mitch McConnell Look in a Mirror…

…but I don’t think his kind show up in them. Here’s a headline to stop you in your tracks, via The Financial Times:

“Mitch McConnell: We’re in a Very, Very Dangerous World Right Now”

My immediate thoughts echoed those of reporter Helen Kennedy on Bluesky:

Is he….is he bragging?

— Helen Kennedy (@helenkennedy.bsky.social) December 11, 2024 at 6:32 PM

No, he’s not. He is trying to present himself, at least for the benefit of the FT’s reporter, as the anti-isolationist, brave truth-teller within the GOP. Really. One excerpt:

“McConnell has been Kentucky senator since 1985. Having committed to serving the final two years of his term, he intends to spend the time pushing back against the increasingly isolationist elements of today’s GOP. ‘The cost of deterrence is considerably less than the cost of war,’ he says, reeling off the figures to prove it. In the second world war, the US spent 37 per cent of GDP on the fight. Last year that figure was about 2.7 per cent. His words are targeted directly at Trump and vice-president-elect JD Vance, who have argued that the US should not be spending any more money on Ukraine. . . . Though some of his biggest moments as Senate leader came during Trump’s first presidency, he is no fan of the president-elect.”

Alas! If only he could have done something to stop Trump’s political career in its tracks. Such a shame the opportunity never presented itself more than twice! The sheer unmitigated brass neck of this monster never ceases to amaze. If the GOP sends American democracy into a fatal spiral, there’s a nice, deep, well-dug grave ready for it courtesy of the senior senator from Kentucky.

If you can handle a sharp spike in your blood pressure, you should be able to read the FT article here via a gift link. If not, try this one instead.

Tuesday Morning Open Thread: President Biden in Indian Country

Biden creates Native American boarding school national monument to mark era of forced assimilation

— Associated Press 🤖 (@asssociatedpress.bsky.social) December 9, 2024 at 3:11 PM

Joe Biden’s Irish(-American) — we have a bone-deep commitment to preserving memories, even the most painful ones:

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — President Joe Biden designated a national monument at a former Native American boarding school in Pennsylvania on Monday to honor the resilience of Indigenous tribes whose children were forced to attend the school and hundreds of similar abusive institutions.

The creation of the Carlisle Federal Indian Boarding School National Monument — announced during a tribal leaders summit at the White House — is intended to confront what Biden referred to as a “dark chapter” in the nation’s history.

“We’re not about erasing history. We’re about recognizing history — the good, the bad and the ugly,” Biden said. “I don’t want people forgetting 10, 20, 30, 50 years from now and pretend it didn’t happen.”

Thousands of Native children passed through the notorious Carlisle Indian Industrial School between 1879 and 1918, including Olympian Jim Thorpe. They came from dozens of tribes under forced assimilation policies that were meant to erase Native American traditions and “civilize” the children so they would better fit into white society.

It was the first school of its type and became a template for a network of government-backed Native American boarding schools that ultimately expanded to at least 37 states and territories.

“About 7,800 children from more than 140 tribes were sent to Carlisle — stolen from their families, their tribes and their homelands. It was wrong making the Carlisle Indian school a national model,” Biden told the White House summit…

show full post on front page

During a dozen public listening sessions over the past several years hosted by the Interior Department, survivors of the schools recalled being beaten, forced to cut their hair and punished for using their native languages.

The forced assimilation policy officially ended with the enactment of the Indian Child Welfare Act in 1978. But the government never fully investigated the boarding school system until the Biden administration.

Biden in October apologized on behalf of the U.S. government for the schools and the policies that supported them…

Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, whose grandparents were taken to boarding schools against their families’ will, said no single action would adequately address the harms caused by the schools. But she said the administration’s efforts have made a difference and the new monument would allow the American people to learn more about the government’s harmful policies.

“This trauma is not new to Indigenous people, but it is new for many people in our nation,” Haaland said in a statement…

The stories of federal Indian boarding school survivors are living history that must be preserved. Today, I announced new agreements and funding commitments to preserve these survivor stories and experiences and share them with the world. https://t.co/Xq9WGkaDXS

Today, we released our 10-Year National Plan on Native Language Revitalization. Our languages embody our indigeneity and our connection to the world around us. Together, we are charting a path forward to restore what assimilation attempted to steal. https://t.co/E4xi8TmxE2

— Secretary Deb Haaland (@SecDebHaaland) December 9, 2024

Important, and exciting:

At the 2024 White House Tribal Nations Summit today, Departments of the Interior, Education and Health and Human Services (HHS) released a 10-year National Plan on Native Language Revitalization, which outlines a comprehensive, government-wide strategy to support the revitalization, protection, preservation and reclamation of Native languages. The plan, a joint effort of the agencies, charts a path to help address the United States government’s role in the loss of Native languages across the continental United States, Alaska and Hawaiʻi…

“Indigenous languages are central to our cultures, our life ways, and who we are as people. They connect us to our ancestors, to our homelands, and to our place in the world,” said Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland. “This ambitious plan represents the Biden-Harris administration’s commitment to address the wrongs of the past and restore what has been taken from us.”

“I always say: multilingualism is a superpower—and that includes Native American languages. During my time as Secretary of Education, I’ve been fortunate to travel through Indian Country and learn beautiful words in Oneida, Dakota, and Nakota languages. One thing was crystal clear: when young people reclaim their native languages, they reconnect deeply with who they are and where they come from,” said Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. “But Native peoples have suffered from shameful policies that aimed to eradicate these languages and cultures for too long. I am hopeful that this national plan is a start to the federal government’s remediation of its participation in those policies. And I am hopeful we can all choose to keep fighting for a future where Native communities have the tools and support to keep their languages alive and their cultures thriving.”

“We use language to write history, share knowledge, map the future, and pass down traditions,” said Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra. “Investing in language revitalization strengthens communities and contributes to their resiliency. HHS is a proud and critical contributor to this coordinated effort and the benefits it will deliver.” …

Additionally, today the Interior Department is announcing a cooperative agreement with the National Fund for Excellence in American Indian Education. This partnership will provide $7.5 million in existing grant funding to BIE schools supporting the launch or expansion of immersion programs and create a network of educators and school leaders committed to Native language revitalization. This funding will help build a network of BIE schools committed to integrating Native language immersion and cultural education into their curricula, offering students the tools to connect with their language and heritage. Together with the National Plan for Native Language Revitalization, these efforts create a comprehensive strategy to protect, preserve and reclaim Indigenous languages across the United States…

Oh wow it turns out maybe Joe Biden did, in fact, have a legitimate rationale for pardoning his son https://t.co/potevYoohg

— The okayest poster there is (@ok_post_guy) December 5, 2024

"Yes, absolutely. Jack Smith's name is on my (pardon) list. Liz Cheney's name is on my list. I think that they should all be preemptively pardoned."

–@RepJamesClyburn on who @POTUS should consider pardoning. pic.twitter.com/uBBCTT8t32

— Laura Coates (@thelauracoates) December 4, 2024

Needless to say, this whole mishuganah is *very* exciting for Politico — “Biden White House Is Discussing Preemptive Pardons for Those in Trump’s Crosshairs”:

… Biden’s aides are deeply concerned about a range of current and former officials who could find themselves facing inquiries and even indictments, a sense of alarm which has only accelerated since Trump last weekend announced the appointment of Kash Patel to lead the FBI. Patel has publicly vowed to pursue Trump’s critics.

The White House officials, however, are carefully weighing the extraordinary step of handing out blanket pardons to those who’ve committed no crimes, both because it could suggest impropriety, only fueling Trump’s criticisms, and because those offered preemptive pardons may reject them.

The deliberations touch on pardoning those currently in office, elected and appointed, as well as former officials who’ve angered Trump and his loyalists.

Those who could face exposure include such members of Congress’ Jan. 6 Committee as Sen.-elect Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and former GOP Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming. Trump has previously said Cheney “should go to Jail along with the rest of the Unselect Committee!” Also mentioned by Biden’s aides for a pardon is Anthony Fauci, the former head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases who became a lightning rod for criticism from the right during the Covid-19 pandemic…

At issue, to repurpose a phrase, is whether to take Trump seriously and literally when it comes to his prospective revenge tour against Democrats and others in the so-called Deep State who’ve raised his ire.

show full post on front page

The White House is facing contradictory pressures from Capitol Hill. Some longtime Democratic lawmakers, like Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.), have talked favorably about the precedent of former President Gerald Ford’s preemptive pardon of Richard Nixon, issued before any charges were filed against the disgraced former president.

“If it’s clear by January 19 that [revenge] is his intention, then I would recommend to President Biden that he provide those preemptive pardons to people, because that’s really what our country is going to need next year,” Markey said on WGBH last week.

Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-Penn.), a close Biden ally who hosted the president in his district shortly before the election, issued a plea Wednesday for Biden to offer blanket pardons.

“This is no hypothetical threat,” Boyle said in a statement, adding: “The time for cautious restraint is over. We must act with urgency to push back against these threats and prevent Trump from abusing his power.”

Other lawmakers, I’m told, have been just as emphatic in private with Biden’s aides in calling for preemptive pardons…

Some senior Democrats I spoke with… wonder how many of those facing retribution are adopting a version of the vote-no-hope-yes mantra that often surrounds difficult legislative votes. Which is to say: Some may publicly oppose preemptive pardons, for reasons of innocence or precedence, while privately hoping the president offers legal protection.

What has some Biden aides particularly concerned is that even the threat of retaliation could prove costly to individuals because they’d be forced to hire high-priced lawyers to defend themselves in any potential investigation.

Especially for those officials without significant means, the specter of six-figure legal bills in the coming years is unnerving. Some Biden appointees, I’m told by people facing scrutiny, are already considering taking the best-paying jobs next year in part to ensure they have the resources to defend themselves against any investigations.

Adding to Biden’s challenge in the final weeks of his presidency is the pressure he’s also feeling from Democrats who want him to offer the same generous clemency to those less privileged that he handed his son.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) invoked Hunter Biden’s pardon this week in calling on the president to, on a case-by-case basis, spare “the working-class Americans in the federal prison system whose lives have been ruined by unjustly aggressive prosecutions for nonviolent offenses.”

Mark Milley, Adam Schiff, Nancy Pelosi, Fani Willis, Jack Smith, Letitia James, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Liz Cheney, Judge Arthur Engoron, Stephanie Grisham, Olivia Troye, himself….

Wednesday Morning Open Thread: We're All Gonna Miss the Bidens

(Ann Telnaes via the Washington Post)

Robin Givhan, at the Washington Post — “One last holiday wish from the Biden White House” [gift link]

The mood of this year’s White House holiday decorations tilts between calm and chaos, between rooms that evoke peace on earth and good will toward men, and others that simply advise visitors to eat, drink and get in a good laugh whenever you can.

The decor is not so much a fantasyland of elves and flying reindeer, but a statement of stubborn good will and wishful thinking about the best that the season can inspire.

In the East Room, a canopy of glittering, metallic snowflakes float above trees trimmed in silver and white. Their bases are framed by silhouettes of American men, women and children all holding hands like a population of happy little Whos in Whoville. White paper doves signifying peace fly over the Cross Hall like a gust of optimism. Church bells and sleigh bells adorn the East Colonnade. And in the State Dining Room, thumb-size candy ice skaters make graceful loops in front of a gingerbread White House blanketed with snow drifts of royal icing. If there is any single message, in these decorations inspired by “A Season of Peace & Light,” it’s that no amount of cultural infighting, political partisanship or shriveled-heart meanness shall steal the Christmas spirit on the Bidens’ watch. Grinches be gone…

The planning for these decorations began months ago. Back then, no one could say whether democracy would be saved or America would be waiting to be made great again. Now, each room reads like an exclamation point on the issues and ideas that have animated the Bidens during their time in the White House — specifically the interests of the first lady. The longtime teacher enhanced the White House library with children’s books. Students created many of the decorations, including self-portraits, that adorn the trees in the State Dining Room. And children — and the young at heart — are the audience for the official White House Christmas tree in the Blue Room. The 18½ foot Fraser fir from North Carolina has been transformed into a carnival carousel with animals bobbing up and down on brass-colored poles.

show full post on front page

The Gold Star tree, dedicated to the men and women of the military who have given their lives in service to the nation, is the first tree visitors see on a tour of the decorations. It reflects the first lady’s long-standing interest in military families. She and the president count themselves among their number, thanks to the service of their late son, Beau. This year, the tree is akin to an art installation, rather than something plucked from a forest. The memorial is constructed of six graduated stars, each representing a branch of the military, stacked one atop the other. With sunlight streaming in through the surrounding windows, the tree practically glows. Rather than stirring a feeling of solemnity, the tree exudes vibrancy and reminds visitors that the achievements, sacrifices and courage of these men and women are ever present. The gilded tree rebukes those who would suggest that there’s anything but honor and valor in their sacrifices…

The decorations are joyful. They delight. They reassure. They might even leave some adults a bit wide-eyed. It’s the White House after all. That warm, fuzzy feeling? Keep it close. The winter might be very, very long.

And also…

BBC: “Biden’s choice of Angola is significant – he is the first US president to visit the country, signalling a dramatic improvement in relations between the two nations. Angola was firmly in the political orbit of China and Russia after independence” https://t.co/5iGcBYwj0w

— SABC News (@SABCNews) December 3, 2024

Per the Associated Press, “Thousands cheer Biden’s arrival in Angola for his long-promised sub-Saharan Africa visit”:

… Biden’s three-day visit to Angola will focus largely on the Lobito Corridor railway redevelopment in Zambia, Congo and Angola. It aims to advance the U.S. presence in a region rich in the critical minerals used in batteries for electric vehicles, electronic devices and clean energy technologies.

Biden’s trip comes weeks before Republican Donald Trump takes office on Jan. 20, finally delivering on Biden’s pledge to visit sub-Saharan Africa. On his way to Angola, he stopped in the Atlantic Ocean island nation of Cape Verde for a brief, closed-door meeting with Prime Minister Ulisses Correia e Silva.

Biden plans to meet with Angolan President João Lourenço in the capital, Luanda, where crowds lined the streets for his arrival, and visit the National Slavery Museum. He also will travel to the Atlantic port city of Lobito for a look at the rail project. He will announce new developments on health, agribusiness and security, White House officials said…

The last U.S. president to visit sub-Saharan Africa was Barack Obama in 2015. Biden did attend a United Nations climate summit in Egypt in North Africa in 2022…

Lobito was made possible by some American diplomatic success in Angola that led to a Western consortium winning the bid for the project in 2022 ahead of Chinese competition, a surprise given Angola’s long and strong ties with Beijing.

The Biden administration accelerated American outreach to Angola, turning around what was an antagonistic relationship three decades ago when the U.S. armed anti-government rebels in Angola’s civil war. U.S.-Angola trade was $1.77 billion last year.

The visit will also draw attention to a perennial challenge for America’s value-based diplomacy in Africa. International rights groups have used Biden’s trip to criticize the Lourenço government’s authoritarian shift. Political opponents have been imprisoned and allegedly tortured, while laws have been passed that severely restrict freedoms, according to rights groups.
