Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Somebody needs to explain to DeSantis that nobody needs to do anything to make him look bad.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

“And when the Committee says to “report your income,” that could mean anything!

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Let there be snark.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

The Giant Orange Man Baby is having a bad day.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

When we show up, we win.

T R E 4 5 O N

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

‘Museums aren’t America’s attic for its racist shit.’

We still have time to mess this up!

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Republicans would impeach Biden if he bit into a whole Kit Kat rather than breaking the sections apart.

FAFO Open Thread: The IRS Announces It Will Come After Rich Tax Cheats

by Anne Laurie|  March 21, 20246:40 pm| 126 Comments

This post is in: C.R.E.A.M., Excellent Links, Proud to Be A Democrat, Schadenfreude

The IRS is sending out more than 125,000 notices to individuals who made $400,000 or more and failed to file returns between 2017 and 2021.

It's estimated that the richest Americans are dodging $150 billion worth of taxes every year.

This is why IRS funding is a good thing.

— Robert Reich (@RBReich) March 20, 2024

Tis the Tax Season, and while very few people enjoy paying taxes, most of us accept that taxes are the price of civilization. So this might help your mood a little…

IRS chief zeroes in on wealthy tax cheats in AP interview https://t.co/ff3z6fzbGe

— The Associated Press (@AP) March 20, 2024

IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel has a message for high-wealth tax cheats who are wrongly deducting private jet travel and otherwise shorting the government on their taxes: Pay your fair share so “others aren’t shouldering the burden of funding our government.”

Werfel, who will hit the one-year mark at the helm of the IRS in April, said in a wide-ranging interview with The Associated Press that the agency will expand its pursuit of high-wealth tax dodgers with new initiatives in the coming months and is using tools like artificial intelligence to ferret out abuses and taking the fight to sophisticated scammers…

“It’s having an impact,” Werfel said. Large corporate filers and others are “taking notice that the IRS is ramping up our scrutiny, and I think that will inevitably result in more compliance” — and revenue…

Werfel has been in a race against time to show how improvements to the agency can benefit taxpayers. He said agency priorities include customer service improvements like answering the phones faster and making sure the rich “pay their fair share.”

The agency also is piloting a program for people to file their taxes directly to the agency without the help — or cost — of private commercial software.

Werfel said more than 50,000 people in 12 states have started using the new Direct File system to complete their taxes. The free online tool is available for people with very simple W-2s and who claim a standard deduction for their federal income taxes.

The Direct File rollout has drawn some consternation from commercial software firms like Intuit, as well as Republicans who argue there are free filing programs that already exist.

But so far, Werfel says, “people are telling us that they found it to be quick and easy, and everyone certainly loves that it’s free. And their No. 1 question is: Are we going to have this again next year?”…

After years of looking the other way at tax cheating by the wealthy, especially under Trump, @POTUS Biden has the @IRSnews focused on enforcing our tax laws.
My piece for @thenation today has the goods:https://t.co/ySGWsfJfWs

— David Cay Johnston (@DavidCayJ) March 1, 2024

Good explainer from David Cay Johnson, at the Nation — “The IRS Finally Takes the Gloves Off”:

show full post on front page

The Internal Revenue Service last week announced a crackdown on writing off the personal use of corporate jets as a business expense. Taking improper tax deductions for private jet flights is the newest target of a reinvigorated IRS, which, under the Biden administration, has begun aggressively pursuing wealthy tax cheats.

On Leap Day, the IRS also announced plans to initiate 125,000 examinations “focused on high earners, including millionaires, who failed to file tax returns” on an estimated $100 billion of income, an average of $800,000 per case.

The IRS said it would also increase examinations of partnerships—another area where cheating has long been rampant—and in general will scrutinize more returns filed by people making more than $1 million per year, especially if they owe large tax debts, own multiple shell companies, or have overseas bank accounts.

These new audit policies clearly signal to business owners and executives that the Trump-era practice of looking the other way at high-level tax cheating is over. The IRS said that the rate at which the IRS audits poor, middle-class, and upper-middle-class Americans will not change.

This is welcome news for honest taxpayers, because when those with the highest incomes cheat, everyone else must pick up their burden in one of three ways: They pay more taxes, receive less government services, or bear the interest on increased government borrowing…

The tax gap (the gap between taxes owed and taxes collected) was $688B in 2021 — nearly half the size of last year’s deficit.

For every $1 the IRS spends auditing rich tax cheats, it can collect $12.

If the GOP truly cared about the deficit, they would fund the IRS, not gut it.

— Robert Reich (@RBReich) March 21, 2024

Thousands of millionaires haven’t filed tax returns for years, IRS says

About 125,000 notices will be sent to high-income earners, including 25,000 people with income more than $1 million, the tax agency said. (No paywall.)https://t.co/oa1I1R8JC8

Thursday Morning Open Thread: Too Many GOP Klowns in Our National Circus

Concerning yesterday’s center-ring saga:

Lacking support and evidence, the GOP-led impeachment inquiry against Biden continued to sputter out, even as House Republicans held a hearing featuring witnesses reiterating thin allegations that his family capitalized financially on their father’s name. https://t.co/wrAKWCH5dy

— The Washington Post (@washingtonpost) March 21, 2024

Per the Washington Post, “Impeachment inquiry appears on ice as House GOP tries to wrangle support” [gift link]:

Lacking support and evidence, the GOP-led impeachment inquiry against President Biden continued to sputter out, even as House Republicans on Wednesday held a hearing that featured witnesses who reiterated thin allegations that members of the Biden family capitalized financially on their father’s name…

With a threadbare majority, House Republicans need near unanimity to approve articles of impeachment against the president, which they do not have. Instead, skepticism among rank-and-file Republicans has only grown since an FBI informant was charged with lying about the Bidens, an implosion of what had been presented as a major piece of evidence.

In the absence of those votes, Comer and other members of the investigating committees have pivoted to the possibility of criminal referrals. Comer has threatened to make “multiple” criminal referrals, but it remains unclear whether lawmakers will formally accuse President Biden of a crime and what crimes they allege may have been committed.

“I’m not sure how we would have a criminal referral of the president yet not move forward with impeachment,” Rep. Kelly Armstrong (R-N.D.) said. “I mean the [Justice Department] is never going to take that up anyway.”…

The apparent collapse of one of the House GOP’s marquee investigations was preceded by a string of incidents where Comer, who has been criticized by even some Republican colleagues for his Fox News-centric approach to the investigation, elevated allegations against Biden and his son before they publicly fizzled. Rep. Jamie Raskin (Md.), the ranking Democrat on the Oversight Committee, in his opening statement Wednesday called the hearing “the end of perhaps the most spectacular failure in the history of congressional investigations.”

“Our colleagues now are apparently preparing to save face by ending the impeachment farce with criminal referrals,” Raskin said. “But criminal referrals require evidence of crimes. And the only crimes we have seen are those of the GOP’s own star witnesses.”…

Some members indicated that they were open to weighing any new evidence House investigators may unearth in the meantime, but Rep. Mike Garcia (R-Calif.) noted that Republicans were running out of time before the rematch between Biden and former president Donald Trump — and that Biden faces bigger electoral challenges than a potential impeachment that is destined to fail in a Democratic-controlled Senate.

“Ultimately the American people will be voting in October or November to decide whether or not this president is suitable for office,” Garcia said. “I think he’s got enough other challenges and failures under his belt that the impeachment probably wouldn’t even affect the outcome of the election.”…

“The only information ever pushed on the Bidens and Ukraine has come from one source and one source only: Russia and Russian agents,” Parnas testified.

At the end of the hearing, Comer said he was inviting the president to testify to Congress, an invitation a White House spokesperson laughed off on social media.

Respect: Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio

It was a delight to watch this 9-minute video of Sherrod Brown this morning.

He’s so genuine, and I love his smile – you see it on and off all through the interview.  Unlike the other side, he’s a real person whose emotions and facial expressions are connected to what he is talking about.

I love his response when Lawrence O’Donnell points out that he won with 100% of the vote.

His respect for the people of Ohio shines through whenever he speaks, no matter what the topic.

Think about taking a listen.  It’s really inspirational.

Ohio peeps, and everyone else, can you share your thoughts on what Sherrod Brown has done for Ohio?  And for the rest of us.

Open thread.

Multiple indictments and half a billion dollars in civil liability later, pretty much the only person who can say they were better off four years ago is Donald Trump.

— Hillary Clinton (@HillaryClinton) March 19, 2024

If anyone has earned a victory lap against busted luzer TFG… you go, girl!

Catherine Rampell, at the Washington Post — “Trump can’t find anyone to spot him $464 million. Would you?” [gift link]:

… In recent months, the former president has racked up a series of costly legal judgments for his many misdeeds. And when I say “costly,” I mean slightly pricier than the Trump-brand gold sneakers. In fact, after summing up the judgments across all of Trump’s cases so far, he already owes more than the entire gross domestic product of several island nations — put together.

In the most expensive case, Trump was found liable for lying about the value of his real estate assets so he could get better terms on loans and insurance. In that judgment, he owes $464 million, after interest. He’s appealing the case, which was brought by the New York attorney general. In the meantime, a judge has said Trump must put up cash or bond to prove he’s good for the money and isn’t appealing merely to delay payment for a while.

Despite boasting about his deep pockets — and even saying in a deposition last year that he had “substantially in excess of $400 million in cash” — Trump has struggled to come up with the dough. So, he tried to get out of it. First, his lawyers asked to instead post a $100 million bond. After all, Trump treats every bill he receives as merely an opening offer — even when it’s a court ruling…

Imagine you sold someone a glass engagement ring that you claimed was a real diamond. Then, when a judge found you liable for fraud, you tried to use the “diamond ring” as collateral for an appeal bond. That’s the level of chutzpah we’re working with here.…

Even if there were no problem whatsoever with Trump’s collateral, skittishness about lending to Trump is more than reasonable. Trump has an extensive history of not paying his bills, whether to cabinet-builders hired by his casinos or big banks financing his skyscrapers. In fact, he often brags about not paying his bills.

Again: He treats every bill, every signed contract, as merely an opening offer…

Biden needles Trump on age, mental fitness, finances at D.C. dinner – The Washington Post https://t.co/ONRRQcbNAt

— Kevin Tullock (@KevinTullock) March 17, 2024

Speaking of deft footwork at a fundraiser… here’s the paywall-free AppleNews link to the Washington Post — “Biden needles Trump on age, mental fitness, finances at D.C. dinner”:

After sitting through hours of jokes about his age at Saturday’s Gridiron Club and Foundation dinner, President Biden turned the tables on the journalists putting on the skits.

“The big news this week is, two candidates clinched their parties’ nomination for president. One candidate is too old, mentally unfit to be president,” Biden said. “And the other is me.”

The joke landed well with most of the 650 journalists and politicos who gathered for the annual white-tie event, which features skits ribbing Republicans and Democrats, stand-up sets from actual Republican and Democratic officials and a whirl of schmoozing…

“The other day, a defeated-looking man came up to me and said, ‘I’m being crushed by debt. I’m completely wiped out,’” Biden said. “I said, ‘Sorry, Donald, I can’t help you.’”

show full post on front page

The $400-a-plate dinner, held at the Washington Grand Hyatt, also featured speeches by Utah Gov. Spencer Cox (R) and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D)…

“I truly can’t believe I’m here tonight — and neither can you,” Cox said during his speech. “It really is such an honor to be at the famed Gridiron dinner. See, they don’t usually let farm kids like me into rooms like this.”

He paused.

“Unless you count January 6th.”

The room roared.

“And even then, we had to really push and shove our way in,” Cox added.

Whitmer’s speech followed a set of skits poking fun at Democrats for seeing their political prospects with rose-colored glasses. “Nothing is coming up roses for deee-mocracyyy,” the Gridiron members sang, donning actual rose-colored glasses…

Our mainstream media, as has occasionally been noted here, is wired for Republicans and wants them to win.
