Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The revolution will be supervised.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Come on, man.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Being the leader of the world means to be the leader of peace.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Let there be snark.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Republican Stupidity

Fiscal Conservatives

by John Cole|  September 2, 20049:37 pm| 27 Comments

This post is in: Republican Stupidity

Earlier today, fellow Milblogger Greyhawk at the Mudville Gazette observed:

Emerging theme of the Democratic response to the Republican convention speeches:

Schwarzenegger is not a Republican
McCain is not a Republican
Zell Miller is not a Democrat

After listening to the spending proposals in the first half of Bush’s speech, we can now add to that:

George Bush is no fiscal conservative

Bush could have saved us from having to listen to an hour of his grating diction by walkingto the microphone and stating:

I accept the nomination, and if I win, I intend to fund every imaginable program possible so the Democrats can’t say I am mean.

Simply indecent.

Alan Keyes, always the crowd pleaser:

Alan Keyes, the Republican candidate for a vacant U.S. Senate seat in Illinois, said Tuesday that Vice President Dick Cheney’s daughter Mary is a “selfish hedonist” because she is a lesbian.

His comments came during an interview with SIRIUS satellite radio.

Keyes said: “The essence of … family life remains procreation. If we embrace homosexuality as a proper basis for marriage, we are saying that it’s possible to have a marriage state that in principal excludes procreation and is based simply on the premise of selfish hedonism.”

Asked whether that meant Mary Cheney “is a selfish hedonist,” Keyes said: “That goes by definition. Of course she is.”

I used to like listening to him speak. I used to like watching his tv show. What a hateful little troll.

Pretty much everything that needs to be said about Alan Keyes in Illinois can be found here. And yes, I stole Baldilock’s title.

McGreevey, Part Two

This post is in: Republican Stupidity

In my previous post about McGreevey, a commenter stated (I have deleted the comment because I don’t want that person to think I am picking on him/her):

The interesting thing will be whether any Republican finds the courage to criticize McGreevey, whether for infidelity or for homosexual sodomy.

Why?

What is there possibly to be gained?

Is there anyone on the planet who does not know that Republicans (in theory) are against marital infidelity?

Do you want to spend another month talking about Henry Hyde’s zipper and Newt Gingrich’s young girlfriend?

Maybe we can get Larry Flynt to spend another million outing some more Congressional hypocrites. That would be helpful in November.

Is there anyone in the country who does not know that the right wing of the party is against sodomy and homosexual marriage? Do you want tto spend another month before the general election being tarred and feathered by the press as a party of bigots?

And could some please explain to me one little thing? Why is it that every time the Democrats are about to shoot themselves in the foot with both barrels, the social conservatives in my party have to open their big, fat, moralizing mouths, and place all Republicans heads between the barrel of the gun and the Democrats big toe?

Can you people not learn? Do you not understand what people mean when they say ‘Bill Clinton was blessed in his enemies?’

For the love of everything holy, NJ could be a win for Bush in November- don’t blow it. McGreevey’s administration was hopelessly corrupt, he has now admitted to having an affair while being married, is about to be charged with sexual harassment, and rather than just give the Democrats all the rope they need, the right wing is tempted one again to take the rope away and give it to the media to horsewhip the entire GOP.

Just be quiet. Trust me.

*** Update ***

On the other hand, this characterization is laughable:

A dedicated, if occasionally inept public servant resigns because of his sexuality.

He resigned because he is about to get HAMMERED with a sexual harassment suit or something of the sort. Not because he is gay- the last time I checked, that ws not an impeachable offense. Anywhere.

What Were They Thinking?

by John Cole|  August 10, 20043:28 pm| 12 Comments

I have ignored the scandal-mongering from the Washington Monthly, Atrios, and Josh Marshall regarding the outing of the Pakistani double-agent because, quite frankly, their track record on successfully recognizing scandals isn’t that great. However, it now appears that there is no question someone in the administration screwed up:

The disclosure to reporters of the arrest of an al-Qaida computer expert allowed several wanted suspects from Osama bin Laden (news – web sites)’s terror network to escape, government and security officials said Tuesday.

Muhammad Naeem Noor Khan, a 25-year-old Pakistani computer engineer, was nabbed in a July 13 raid in the eastern city of Lahore. He then led Pakistani authorities to a key al-Qaida figure and cooperated secretly by sending e-mails to terrorists so investigators could trace their locations.

His arrest was first reported in American newspapers on Aug. 2 after it was disclosed to reporters by U.S. officials in Washington. Later, the Pakistan government also confirmed his capture but gave no other details.

Two senior Pakistani officials said the reports in “Western media” enabled other al-Qaida suspects to get away.

“Let me say that this intelligence leak jeopardized our plan and some al-Qaida suspects ran away,” one of the officials said on condition of anonymity.

Unless other details emerge clearing the administration, let me be the first to say the Administration blew it and big time.

I understand the Democrats have created a climate in which any administration action is loudly and publicly denounced as partisan maneuvering- that is to the Democrats shame. That does not, however, excuse the kind of carelessness that took place here, and is certainly no way to ‘win’ a war on terror.

Most disturbing of all is that you would think they would know by now that they can not trust the press. You know the old saying- Fool me once…

*** Update ***

As of right now, comments are 100% against me blaming the administration. Go figure.

Stupid Is As Stupid Does

Sorry for the language, but what a fucking embarassment:

Officials in Indiana and Washington, D.C., said they are dumbfounded by a statement U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris made about a terrorist plot to blow up a power grid in Indiana.

In making the statement during a speech to 600 people Monday night in Venice, Harris either shared a closely held secret or passed along second-hand information as fact.

WTF? It gets better:

She said in the speech that a man of Middle Eastern heritage had been arrested in the plot and that explosives were found in his home in Carmel, a suburb north of Indianapolis.

Harris, a Republican from Longboat Key who is running for re-election, said the case was an example of the nation’s success in fighting terrorism.

A helping of overt racism to go with your bullshit sandwich?

He said that making such statements without providing specific details to back them up “only serves to erode public confidence” in the credibility of government.

A spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security would not comment Tuesday on Harris’ statements.

Probably because it is DHS policy not to call sitting Congressmen “stupid assholes.”

You know- it is stupid half-wits like this that let shit-heels like Howard Dean claim Republicans are exploiting terrorism for partisan gain.

Don’t let the door hit you in the ass, Kathy. And I really don’t want to lose the House, but you are just in over your head, dear- one Patty Murray on Capitol Hill is enough.
