John Hawkins replies to my post yesterday:

Ex-conservative, John Cole over at Balloon Juice, is shoveling manure as fast as he can at his former allies on the right.

At one time Cole ran a reliably conservative blog, but about the time Terri Schiavo became a big issue, he got a real bee in his bonnet about religious people being allowed to have a voice in the Republican Party, too, and he flipped out and veered left. In other words, he pulled an Andrew Sullivan and got so upset that the majority of the conservative commentariat disagreed with him, that it twisted his whole philosophy.

Of course, he benefitted from stepping to the left a lot more than Sullivan did. Sullivan had a big audience and actually seemed to pay a price for switching allegiances. On the other hand, Cole went from being a small fry conservative blog to being a small fry ex-conservative blog that regularly got links from liberal blogs like the Daily Kos that love nothing more than to read a blogger claiming to be a conservative ripping on other conservatives.

In other words, supposedly Cole is hopping into bed with people like Kos, Jane Hamsher, Michael Moore, Ted Kennedy, Robert Byrd, William Jefferson, John Kerry, & Ted Rall, because he thinks Republicans are mean.

Reaslly, his post (and those like them – I am whiny AND nauseating!) really don’t deserve much comment, but I will leave you with this- John Hawkin’s regularly has polls asking right-wing bloggers to list the worst people in American history. Mind you- the worst Americans in history. Bill and Hillary Clinton received 25 votes.

That speaks for itself, and is part of the reason I stopped reading him about a while ago.

A general rule of thumb regarding controversies like this is to count how many posts Michelle Malkin has about the issue, and to note that there is a positive correlation to how trivial the matter is and how many posts she has about it. At my last count, she had four on her site, two on her spin-off site Hot Air (who I still think ripped their name off from me). That would tell me that this issue would be somewhere between Cindy Sheehan and crescent-shaped 9/11 memorials and Terri Schaivo in importance, but the possibility is there for a new record.

Predictably, lamentably, the right-wing blogosphere is grievously insulted and has put the grass-roots outrage machine in high gear. Expect record levels of umbrage from all corners.

I wish Kerry had not made the remark (even though he was trying to insult the President and not the troops), but I do find it a little amusing that the people who are ‘upset’ about this remark managed (if my memory is correct) to remain completely silent about this:

I am sure we all remember the Bush supporters wearing fake purple heart stickers at the 2004 RNC to mock Kerry’s service. Additionally, I note that Malkin and company have not yet moved to condemn the treatment Vietnam war hero Jim Webb is getting at the hands of Red State, where he has been compared to John Mark Karr and today called a pervert.

Of course, the ‘libertarian’ reaction is predictably ‘nuanced.’ Well, no, it really isn’t:

JOHN KERRY — a gift that keeps on giving. Unfortunately, it’s a gift for the Republicans. . . .

Kerry’s suggestion that the troops in Iraq are dumb failures is not only reprehensible, but false on the facts. In other words, a typical Kerry performance, just in time for the elections. Democrats must be wondering what they were thinking to nominate him in 2004, and why he won’t go away now.

Glenn then links to numerous outraged (OUTRAGED) folks alternately condemning Kerry and demanding an apology. A snide observer (and I am one), might wryly note that Glenn thinks the mainstream media always drops the ball, paying too much attention to trivial issues rather than issues of importance, and that is why the blogosphere is so important- to provide real reporting. I guess Glenn is right- who needs the mainstream media when you have tons of bloggers who can treat elections like games and horse races?

Again, I wish Kerry had not made the remark (or phrased it better), but really, it changes nothing. The Republican party has no plan for Iraq other than rhetorical shifts, their policies are not constructed or implemented to actually accomplish anything but rather to maintain Congressional power, and we all will be better off if the GOP is swept out of power. The Republicans are corrupt, morally bankrupt, have no ideas, no principles, and are hoping upon hope that this latest distraction will help to stop the bleeding. Unfortunately, the bleeding they care about is at the polls and not the bleeding in Iraq.

Let’s crush their hopes.

A Uniter, Not a Divider

President Bush:

Faced with potential GOP defeat in both chambers, Bush and Cheney aimed to avert that by convincing voters that they cannot risk giving the opposition party any power in Washington.

“However they put it, the Democrat approach in Iraq comes down to this: The terrorists win and America loses,” Bush told a raucous crowd of about 5,000 GOP partisans packed in an arena at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, one of his stops Monday. “That’s what’s at stake in this election. The Democrat goal is to get out of Iraq. The Republican goal is to win in Iraq.”

Iraq is over. We can do little to nothing more. The war is over. Finished. It is an ex-parrot. Pretending the GOP wants to “win” and the Democrats want to “lose” is absurd, as there is no winning and losing anymore. There is just dying and election-year rhetoric.

BTW- It really is amazing what Ann Althouse will excuse away. It is almost like she has no principles.

Santorum’s Desperation

This is charming:

.S. Sen. Rick Santorum accused state Treasurer Bob Casey of “aiding and abetting terrorism and genocide,” saying yesterday that state pension funds are invested with companies linked to terrorist-sponsoring states.
As he has done before, Santorum criticized Casey’s work ethic, saying his Democratic opponent has failed to show up for work and has not been a diligent treasurer in failing to change investment policies.

The third-ranking Republican in the Senate said preventing terrorists from getting funding was an essential part of combating terrorism.

“I’m the one trying to fight this war politically and economically so we don’t have to fight it militarily, and he is asleep at the switch because he’s not doing his job,” Santorum said.

Santorum did not cite specific examples but referred to a report by the Center for Security Policy, a conservative think tank that has pushed for divestment from companies doing business in terror-sponsoring nations.

“Bob Casey has invested Pennsylvania pension funds in companies with ties to terrorist-sponsoring states and states that engage in genocide,” Santorum said. “Bob Casey is aiding and abetting terrorism and genocide.”

I can’t believe I ever voted for these people. And all you terrorist enablers in Pennsylvania should be ashamed of yourself and better vote for Santorum, because if you don’t, we are ALL GONNA DIE. Hell, someone in Santorum’s campaign told me that Casey was going to have tea with Zawahiri and plot bombings if he gets elected. Or maybe I read that at the increasingly disgusting Red State.

The Say Anything Party

Say Anything was a cute, innocent 80’s movie about teenage angst and romance. The Say Anything party came to power in the 80’s and 90’s and has been slowly rotting from the top down ever since. Today’s latest installment from Red State:

Attention Virginia. Sure, John Mark Karr’s Jim Webb’s supporters can hide behind the “it’s just fiction” defense. But you really want to do that? Do you really want to defend a guy with that sort of imagination?

Well, it’s time to wake up and realize the Democrats have nominated a dirty perv in Virginia. And you guys can send him to the Senate if you want. But I think I’d lock the doors and hide the kids if you did.

While Say Anything was innocent, the Say Anything Party is not. Devoid of principles, bereft of ideals, incapable of civil discourse, the Say Anything party will do just that- say anything to maintain power. That book that ‘proves’ Webb is a pervert- well, take it away Radley:

I just did an Amazon search on the passage in Webb’s book. It isn’t the least bit titillating. It’s in the context of an American in an exotic, backward, remote part of a foreign land. The penis-kissing scene baffles and bewilders the Americans. It is clearly not a “fellating.” It is not a depiction of pedophelia. It’s very obviously scene painting, and the shock and oddity of the act adds to the lead characters’ sense that they’re out-of-place.

Of course, that hasn’t stopped the right wing blogosphere from gleefully calling Webb a pedophile.

This is really despicable on the part of the Allen campaign. It’s little more than a celebration of ignorance, isolation, and fear. It’s a bald attempt to deflect the Foley scandal, not to mention Allen’s own ethnically insensitive missteps in this campaign.

Let’s summarize: While George Allen was discovering his love for the Confederacy in Southern California and at the University of Virginia, Jim Webb was fighting the war in Vietnam, finding himself wholly immersed in a completely foreign culture. Webb was obviously rather profoundly affected by that experience. Because he chose to write about it, in a series of books that have won widespread praise from politicians, from fellow Vietnam vets, and from literary critics.

It doesn’t matter, Radley- this is the Say Anything Party! Also in a starring role in the Say Anything party is Michael Steele, who today said that Cardrin wants to cut and run, but he might do the same in about it in six months. What is in 6 months- well, not the November elections! Everyone cheer the Say Anything Party! For bonus laughs, watch him stutter when Russert asked him if he was going to close down fertility clinics because they destroy embryos.

All you have to do to be a member of the Say Anything party is make lame excuses and keep telling yourself the Democrats are worse and that the end justifies the means. You don’t really have to believe in anything.

When Did You Stop Beating Your Wife?

If rumors surrounding Sen. George Felix Allen (R-VA) hold up, around the time she filed for divorce.

Emails began pouring in earlier today about a rumor on Capitol Hill about some trouble in Sen. George Allen’s (R-VA) divorce file. Josh Marshall and others cannot get a response from the Allen campaign.

It seems everyone is emptying their opposition research files today.

Update: A very reputable political reporter tells me this isn’t from Democratic opposition research and that it’s probably coming out because many feel Allen “crossed the line” when he started talking about Jim Webb’s novels.

Notice the update. Counting the Foley matter as the first, this would be the second time that faithful Republicans have kicked open a massive PR disaster for their party. That seems more than a little strange coming from the party that gave us the Eleventh Commandment.

Playing a bit with the analogy, if John Cole is teh ghey then it looks like DC has a rather busy closet.
