Someone explain this boondoggle to me:

Administration officials say they are planning an extensive election-year initiative to promote marriage, especially among low-income couples, and they are weighing whether President Bush should promote the plan next week in his State of the Union address.

For months, administration officials have worked with conservative groups on the proposal, which would provide at least $1.5 billion for training to help couples develop interpersonal skills that sustain “healthy marriages.”

If marriage is so good the far right is fighting to keep it from the gays, why do we have to spend 1.5 BILLION to promote it?

Maybe Republicans, after passing this obscene Prescription Drug Vote Buying Scheme, will begin to understand that they were right all along about the Welfare state. Buying votes through permanent entitlements is a really shitty idea, and it is not helpful for anyone. Check out the sick state of mind as presented in the NY Times:

The GOP’s Spending Spree: Aren’t Republicans supposed to be the party of small government?

I guess they got the same fiscal bill of goods I got. The only problem is that nothing in my experience, and in particular the rhetoric of the Democrats during the Drug Benefit debate, even gives me the slightest impression Democrats would be any better. Poor Ev Dirksen.

The Energy Bill really is disgusting. I hated the way the Democrats launched their jihad against Cheney and the manner the energy bill was written, and it is still my belief that how the bill was written is not relevant. What is relevant, however, is that this bill, by most objective accounts and non-objective accounts (such as this, via Max Sawicky), is just a disgusting, distasteful, pork-barrel waste of a stinker.

Most personally offensive to me are the ethanol subsidies and the gas pipeline subsidies.

Now that the AARP has announced they are in favor of the Prescription Drug Act, AKA the GOP Vote BUYING Big Government Scheme, there is clearly no other choice.

This bill must be stopped. I don’t undertsand why I should pay for Bill Gate’s viagra.

This disgusts me to no end:

Confounding President Bush’s pledges to rein in government growth, federal discretionary spending expanded by 12.5 percent in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30, capping a two-year bulge that saw the government grow by more than 27 percent, according to preliminary spending figures from congressional budget panels.

The sudden rise in spending subject to Congress’s annual discretion stands in marked contrast to the 1990s, when such discretionary spending rose an average of 2.4 percent a year. Not since 1980 and 1981 has federal spending risen at a similar clip. Before those two years, spending increases of this magnitude occurred at the height of the Vietnam War, 1966 to 1968.

Sickening.
