Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

If you are still in the GOP, you are an extremist.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

War on Terror

You Chose Poorly

by John Cole|  August 3, 200310:22 am| 2 Comments

This post is in: War on Terror aka GSAVE®

I am not in favor of human suffering, but I am finding it difficult to muster sympathy for this crowd:

The 1,500 Palestinian refugees stranded inside the Haifa Sports Club were once part of former president Saddam Hussein’s favorite foreign cause. He welcomed them after other Arab countries shut their doors, provided them with free housing, mentioned their political plight in major speeches and promised to liberate their homeland one day.

But with the collapse of Hussein’s government in April, the estimated 70,000 Palestinians living in Iraq — including some who arrived half a century ago and many who were born here — lost a powerful patron. And in the chaotic, score-settling days that followed, a society that had embraced them for decades revealed an uglier face.

“We lived with our neighbors for years; we went to each other’s parties; we took each other to the hospital. But after Saddam left, they told us there was no place for us in Iraq any more,” said Feduah Abdel Ghani, 34, whose family moved into a tent last month after being forced from their home of 14 years. “I thought they liked me. It is a big shock.”

Yes, the Palestinians have been played like pawns for years by every despot and tyrant in the region, but I still find it hard to feel bad for people whose sole goal in life is the destruction of Israel and the demise of the United States.

WMD?

I’ll take this report of WMD finds with the usual hockey-puck sized grain o’ salt:

group of Swedish researchers, travelling to Iraq without the knowledge of the Swedish government, is announcing that they have found missiles for weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in a house in Baghdad.

The finds will be presented in a forthcoming production by World Television Network (WTN). The information supposedly came to Swedish WTN reporter Maria Wera Cedrell, who has worked in Iraq for 15 years, through an Iraqi scientist. She was assisted by former arms inspector and WMD expert

Good news from Tikrit:

American soldiers overpowered and arrested one of Saddam Hussein’s bodyguards today and said they had obtained documents and information that could help them close in on the former dictator.

We’re coming to get ya…

Excellent News

Common sense in the House:

The U.S. House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday to roll back a key provision, which allows the government to conduct secret “sneak and peek” searches of private property, of a sweeping anti-terrorism law passed soon after the Sept. 11 attacks.

The House voted 309-118 to attach the provision to a $37.9 billion bill funding the departments of Commerce, State and Justice. It would be the first change in the controversial USA Patriot Act since the law was enacted in October, 2001.

The move would block the Justice Department from using any funds to take advantage of the section of the act that allows it to secretly search the homes of suspects and only inform them later that a warrant had been issued to do so.

Sanity prevails.

9/11 Report

by John Cole|  July 10, 20031:50 pm| Leave a Comment

This should be interesting:

A long-awaited final report on the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks will be released in the next two weeks, containing new information about U.S. government mistakes and Saudi financing of terrorists.

Former Rep. Tim Roemer, who served on the House Intelligence Committee and who has read the report, said it will be ”highly explosive” when it becomes public.

The staff director for the congressional investigation that produced the 800-page report, Eleanor Hill, said Wednesday that several lengthy battles with the Bush administration over how much secret data to declassify have been resolved.

She expects the document to go to the Government Printing Office late this week and then be made public about a week later.

”It’s compelling and galvanizing and will refocus the public’s attention on Sept. 11,” predicted Roemer, an Indiana Democrat. “Certain mistakes, errors and gaps in the system will be made clear.”

War on Terror Updates

Some interesting developments. First this:

suburban Chicago man was arrested Wednesday on charges of secretly gathering information on Iraqi opposition figures as an unregistered agent of Saddam Hussein’s intelligence service.
Khaled Abdel-Latif Dumeisi, 60, was charged based on a dossier seized in a Baghdad safehouse allegedly run by Iraqi intelligence in April as U.S. troops moved in.

Federal officials also said unnamed informants identified Dumeisi as having contact with Iraqi intelligence agents attached to Saddam’s mission to the United Nations

Another One Bites the Dust

Another one down:

Federal authorities said today that they had uncovered a plot by Al Qaeda, working with a truck driver in Ohio, to bomb a bridge in New York City, trains in Washington and other targets.

The truck driver, Iyman Faris, a 34-year-old American citizen from Kashmir, was secretly taken into custody about three months ago by federal agents. Under a secret plea agreement unsealed today, Mr. Faris agreed in April to charges of providing material support to terrorists, and he faces up to 20 years in prison.

Rot in hell, traitor.
