Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

John Fetterman: Too Manly for Pennsylvania.  Paid for by the Oz for Senator campaign.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

According to Architectural Digest, it sounds like a version of Epcot, only much more “exclusive”…

… Named “MOON,” the project envisions a 735-foot-tall mixed-use building in the shape of Earth’s only natural satellite. Designed like a hyper-realistic take on the Epcot globe at Disney World, the developers are in talks to bring MOON to four global locations, currently expecting the first to be in Dubai. Though any official plans are yet to be finalized, the company’s founders are optimistic. “From an architectural, engineering, and design perspective, MOON can be built,” Michael R. Henderson, MOON cofounder, tells AD.

Inside, guests will find a full-service destination resort in addition to approximately 300 private residences available for purchase. Drawings on social media also depict plans for a nightclub, event center, spa, retail space, and piano lounge, among other amenities. However, the main attraction isn’t a hotel room or dance floor, but a lunar surface simulation that lets guests experience the sensation of space exploration firsthand. “MOON will form the bridge, delivering an affordable and entirely authentic space tourism experience millions of enthusiasts around planet Earth have been patiently waiting for,” Henderson says. The company even hopes to establish MOON as an authentic training location for various space agencies…

Like a moon resort in outer space—or any genuine galactic travel, for that matter—bringing the project to life will require billions of dollars. “Potential regional licensees for MOON will be major, global, forward-thinking corporations capable of funding its $5 billion build-out,” Henderson explains. A hefty price tag, no doubt, but the company credits a growing interest in space tourism as evidence that a destination like this is a worthy project. If it comes to fruition, Moon would be constructed to LEED Gold five-star standard, according to Henderson…

You ask me, anyone who gives these people money doesn’t deserve to have it in the first place. On the other hand, imagine the possibilities for — oh, let’s say, safely containing criminal oligarchs who lose their state bases?…

President Biden will deliver a prime-time address in Philadelphia Thursday on the fight for democracy in America and “the continued battle for the soul of the nation,” a White House official said Monday. https://t.co/d4mFjpwM80

— The Washington Post (@washingtonpost) August 30, 2022

… Speaking at Philadelphia’s Independence National Historical Park, the president is expected to highlight his administration’s achievements and argue that the country’s democratic values will be at stake during the midterm elections.

“He will talk about the progress we have made as a nation to protect our democracy, but how our rights and freedoms are still under attack,” the official said. “He will make clear who is fighting for those rights, fighting for those freedoms, and fighting for our democracy.” The official spoke on the condition of anonymity to preview the content of the speech…

Thursday’s speech is not billed as a political event, and given its character as a prime-time presidential address, Biden may avoid some of his sharper denunciations.

The need to restore America’s basic values, including democracy and the rule of law, has been a theme of Biden’s presidency from the beginning. He has cited it as the reason he decided to run in 2020, describing his horror at the march of white supremacists in Charlottesville in 2017, and President Donald Trump’s comment afterward that there were “very fine people on both sides.”

Biden at times has suggested a central way to combat anti-democratic forces is to show that democracy and governing can work. That prompted some Democrats to complain that he was shying away from forcefully denouncing Trump and other Republicans who falsely claimed the last election was rigged and who may be laying the groundwork to challenge future legitimate elections.

But now Biden appears to be seeking to meld the two messages — saying “MAGA Republicans” are trying to destroy democracy, and Democrats and traditional Republicans are getting things done…

The sensible angle is that the proof of the pudding will be in the eating. I do speculate that this may be a rare national election where a strong ground game really matters. Regardless, I think cautious optimism is warranted. Things are going better than we could have hoped.

Accompanying her on ULA’s rocket (named Vulcan) will be Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, his wife and “First Lady of Star Trek” Majel Barrett Roddenberry, beloved Star Trek actor James “Scotty” Doohan, and VFX maestro and Hollywood icon Douglas Trumbull, and others—making for a historic Star Trek Reunion flight.

Additionally, fans from all over the world will be able to participate in this mission in various ways. They can celebrate Nichols and her life as well as take part in this mission with her by sending their name and tributes to her on the Celestis web site. This will serve as the worldwide public memorial page for the late actress. Those who choose to participate will have their names and messages digitized and launched with her on her journey. They can also send in drawings, writings, music scores, photos, scripts, and poems (in the form of what is known as a Celestis MindFile).

Respite/Readership Capture

by Tom Levenson|  August 23, 20221:32 pm| 37 Comments

You like dogs? Why, I believe a few of us do!

If you count yourself among the canineophiles (or just like cool science), you’ll want to read this by the excellent science writer, Christie Wilcox:

When a person is overcome with emotion, their feelings stream down their cheeks. Even positive emotions can turn on the waterworks, as people bawl when they win awards, express love for their partners, or are reunited with a long-lost friend.

But these feelings-driven tears may not be a wholly human experience. Dogs can also cry happy tears, according to a study published today (August 22) in Current Biology. Although the animals’ eyes don’t overflow, they well up when they’re reunited with their owners after spending even just hours apart, the researchers found. And they have hunch as to why: a sudden increase in oxytocin, the so-called love hormone, named for its predominant roles in social bonding.

Much more at the link.

If your tastes are more cosmic, enjoy the latest from the giant mirror hanging out at L2:

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has captured new images of the planet. Webb’s Jupiter observations will give scientists even more clues to Jupiter’s inner life.

“We hadn’t really expected it to be this good, to be honest,” said planetary astronomer Imke de Pater, professor emerita of the University of California, Berkeley. De Pater led the observations of Jupiter with Thierry Fouchet, a professor at the Paris Observatory, as part of an international collaboration for Webb’s Early Release Science program. Webb itself is an international mission led by NASA with its partners ESA (European Space Agency) and CSA (Canadian Space Agency). “It’s really remarkable that we can see details on Jupiter together with its rings, tiny satellites, and even galaxies in one image,” she said.

the main lesson that republicans should take from this is that they are playing with fire and it's getting out of control, though the one they'll probably take from it is that they can't trust the voters https://t.co/85b0mP8oIQ

Remember that Republicans scheduled the Kansas abortion referendum for the primary rather than the general election because there are many more registered Republicans in the state than Democrats and unaffiliateds can’t vote in primary races. Abortion rights still won handily.

Perhaps mastery of the countermajoritarian levers of American democracy is not the same as a broad public mandate to create an unprecedented state regime of surveillance, coercion and control in the name of banning abortion.

— Star Trek (@StarTrek) July 31, 2022

… Back in 2010, StarTrek.com interviewed Nichols with questions submitted by fans. That conversation ended with this question, “How does it feel to know you’ve inspired so many people — like Dr. Mae Jemison and Whoopi Goldberg, who are a couple of your more famous fans — but also so many others, people you may never even have met?” Nichols paused for a moment, and then replied, “People keep saying, ‘You’ve inspired women of color.’ And I say, ‘Yes, Black, white, yellow, brown, red and probably some with green blood and pointy ears!’ Gene’s brilliance was in casting people from all over the Earth, and an alien. It made everyone feel like they belonged. I wasn’t a Black communications officer. I was a communications officer who happened to be from Africa, who happened to have brown skin. So I have had women of all stripes tell me how Uhura inspired them to reach for the stars. I’ve had women who’ve named their children after Uhura, and even after Nichelle.”

“That is the way life is supposed to be,'” concluded Nichols. “What Gene did by casting us helped change society, change the way people thought, change the world. It’s amazing. He wanted [Star Trek] to be a reflection of the world, and that’s what happened.”

I will never forget when Nichelle Nichols slipped the best joke in all of TOS past the censors. #RIPNichelle pic.twitter.com/XijxSdF9Hh
