Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Republicans don’t trust women.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

Everybody saw this coming.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

The words do not have to be perfect.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

This really is a full service blog.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Bark louder, little dog.

Don’t expect peaches from an apple tree.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

He really is that stupid.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

Republicans can’t even be trusted with their own money.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Let The Over-Reach Begin Lott

Let The Over-Reach Begin

Lott has stepped down, which means that I do not have to shred my registration card. I am glad they did the right thing, and I am glad we can move on. Except we can’t. The left is now, to use one of their favorite terms, ’emboldened,’ and we are going to have to weather a number of blatant acts of race-baiting and pandering in the next couple of months. They think they can now tar the entire GOP as racist, and they are going to be doing anything they can to claim every last Republican is a racist fascist. Check out these comments posted by readers of the Daily Kos:

The Dems should figure out some kind of civil rights bill to introduce and let’s see how these “all inclusive” Repubs vote.

and

Let’s be “Perfectly Clear”. The only reason Trent Lott is resigning is because he got caught being too far out in public with his racist remarks. Other Republicans do the same things behind the scenes as President Clinton so aptly put it. The Republican Party is the party of racists and bigots, openly, actively, and behind the scenes. Let us Democrats say this loudly and forthrightly. It is the Truth.

and

Some sort of civil rights bill needs to be placed in the hopper on the first day of the next Congress. This bill needs to be introduced w/ great fanfare. It needs to be one that the GOP really will not like but will not have the courage to openly oppose. Let’s put the “party of Lincoln” on the spot.

Civil Rights ain’t about civil rights, you see. It is about political gain. It is about keeping African-Americans voting for Democrats. It is not about the dream of a color-blind society, but rather the Orwellian “All animals are equal, some are just more equal than others.” And, of course, if you oppose any of their proposals, no matter how bad they might be, you are a racist- why you are no better than Lott, or David Duke. This is how they intend to hijack the dialogue, with demagoguery, race-baiting, propoganda, and name-calling. And they will over-reach.

I went to go see LOTR today, and guess what? Every showing is sold out. You know why? Because they gave precisely ONE FRIGGING SCREEN for what everyone knows will be the best movie of the year. One screen.

Have no fear, though. If you want to sit through 2 hours of sophomoric penis jokes, there are plenty of seats available for Rob Schneider’s The Hot Chick. An entire wasted screen for someone who can’t even spell funny, let alone entertaining.

Bastards.

New Republic Jackasses

The dolts at the New Republic have me defending Ted Turner:

Five years ago, zillionaire Ted Turner was showered with praise when he announced he would give $1 billion to the United Nations by the end of the year 2002. Since then, in addition to constantly wringing his hands over the implosion of AOL-Time-Warner-General-Motors, or whatever it’s now called, Turner has bragged, bragged, bragged about what a great guy he is because of his incredible generosity.

Well, it’s now the end of the year 2002. Has he handed over that $1 billion yet? No. Turner has donated $500 million, half his pledge. But that was less than 15 percent of his net worth when he made the commitment, and far, far less than the great philanthropists of the past, such as John D. Rockefeller and Andrew Carnegie, once gave relative to their net worth.

Turner’s current net worth, according to Forbes, is $2.2 billion. This means he could easily keep his word, give the $500 million immediately and remain filthy rich, instead of endlessly promising. But why should he follow through when the media strokes and lauds him as if he already has–while Turner keeps the whole bundle for himself like a run-of-the-mill selfish rich guy, cackling as he counts his gold?

Point Number One: I know you hate the rich, but you come off as supreme ass-pirates when you call someone a zillionaire for effect and then state his wealth a 2.2 BILLION.

Point Number Two: Is it any of your Damned business what he does with his money? Is it any of your business how he fulfills his promise? When did you give a billion to the U.N.? Is the U.N. bitching?

They are probably just pissed that it is a billion less for them to confiscate when he dies. Then the billion could be spent on some asinine social program and REALLY wasted (although it is hard to compete with the U.N. for waste).

My Friend Caz on Nelson

by John Cole|  December 17, 20025:44 pm| Leave a Comment

My Friend Caz on Nelson Mandela’s Criticism of the U.S. (link is to Reuters story):

Former South African President Nelson Mandela criticized the United States
Tuesday for disregarding the international community as it prepares to wage war
against Iraq. He demanded respect for the authority of the U.N., urged the U.S.
to respect those democratic principles it holds dear in its domestic affairs,
stated that the long-term peace and security of our world depend upon scrupulous
adherence to the founding principles of the United Nations, and blah blah
friggin’ blah.

I’ll dignify Mr. Irrelevant’s banter with a response, although it’s against my
better judgement.

First of all, it is important that we Americans don’t lose sight of our purpose:
to ensure the security of OUR nation. While it is a noble goal to work towards
world peace, our nation’s safety must remain the paramount goal of our foreign
policy. When the Useless Nations’ policies are contrary to our national
security, we must disregard them.

Second, there has been nothing unilateral about the Iraq situation at all! We
have continued to work with the UN, and have allowed them another (yawn) chance
to show that they are more than a bunch of talking socialist heads. The weapons
inspectors in Iraq are UN inspectors, following UN resolutions. All we have
done so far is kick the UN in the ass to get to them to do SOMETHING. Besides,
we have plenty of international support for any action we may “unilaterally”
take in Iraq.

Finally, that the long-term peace and security of our world depends on deference
to UN principles scares the hell out of me. Instead of protecting civil rights
and ensuring world safety, the Useless Nations would rather pacify dictators
and mass murderers to avoid any unpleasant situations. I think Kofi Annan would
cry if Saddam scolded the UN for their worthless resolutions.

It’s easy to dole out socialism and anti-American sentiment from their NYC
highrise, choosing alliance with terrorists, ruthless dictators, and murderers
rather than the evil United States. Perhaps the UN will be the next terrorist
target, then they can pass another “tough” resolution and feel important. But I
doubt the terrorists would bite the hand that feeds them.

Well said, Caz.

Media Bias

Several weeks ago, Gore and Daschle railed about the ‘Conservative media bias.’ Gore went so far as to call conservative influence in the media a ‘fifth column.’ To prove that there exists a massive conservative media bias, go check the NY Times fawning lead editorial congratulating Al Gore for essentially doing nothing:

Al Gore deserves the gratitude of the nation, and not just conflicted Democrats, for his unquestionably painful decision not to run in 2004 for the presidency. With liberating decisiveness, the former vice president is forgoing his ultimate goal

Dance With the Girl Who Brung You

I am not sure why Krugman is employed by the NY Times as their economic analyst. It seems to me he does nothing but provide third-rate commentary on social/political issues. I thought that was Dowd’s job description.

Dead Man Talking

Apparently I am not the only one who was left utterly unmoved and unimpressed by Lott’s performance on BET.

President Bush will not intervene to rescue Senate Republican leader Trent Lott from a leadership struggle brought on by his remarks seen as endorsing racial segregation, Bush administration officials said on Tuesday.

The decision basically left the Mississippi Republican isolated in his struggle to hold on to power. He would be Senate majority leader when Republicans take control of the Senate in January.

Why should he? Any way you look at it, if I were President Bush, I would want Lott dead. And since when is Lott totally, across the board, in favor of affirmative action?
