Elitism Update, Part 2

by John Cole|  August 22, 20084:17 pm| 67 Comments

This post is in: Republican Stupidity, Did You Know John McCain Was A POW?

As a service to faithful readers, I intend to try to keep you up to date with the evolving definition of elitism. Today’s elitism upate is as follows:

Elitist: Discussing the price of arugula with farmers in Iowa. Apparently, arugula is the heart and soul of elitism, as demonstrated by the distribution of said lettuce by posh Irish restaurateurs “McDonalds” in their side salad:

Salad Mix: Iceberg lettuce, romaine lettuce, spring mix (may contain baby red romaine, baby green romaine, baby red leaf, baby green leaf, baby red Swiss chard, baby red oak, baby green oak, lolla rosa, tango, tatsoi, arugula, mizuna, radicchio, frisee), carrots. Grape tomatoes. CURRENTLY, OUR SALADS DO NOT CONTAIN SPINACH.

Now I don’t know about you all, but here in West Virginia, a trip to McDonalds is some pretty exotic stuff.

Not Elitist: Riding in a nine car motorcade to buy a cappucino from Starbucks.

Now, some of you might be wondering why a domestically grown lettuce is elitist but imported coffee beans are not, or why cappucino is not elitist but latte is, and if I find out I will let you know. Like I said in the first installment of our Elitism Update, the rules for this stuff can change unexpectedly, depending on what the right wingers need to accomplish. It is entirely possible that you could order a T-bone, thinking you are having a good American meal, and halfway through the meal find out that T-bones are now elitist. So be careful, readers. As we have learned in the last eight years, elitism is bad, and you always want to shoot for “guy I wanna have a beer with.”

A Defense You Can Believe In

Via Top of the Ticket, Robin Leach of Lifesyles of the Rich and Famous fame comes to McCain’s defense:

In an early morning phone call Friday from his fabulous crib in Las Vegas, Leach told The Times that he isn’t really surprised at McCain’s odd memory lapse given the complex lives that the super-rich lead.

“He probably was confused as to which homes are in his name, his wife’s name, or corporate names,” Leach explained in his familiar, deep British baritone. “In his attempt to be honest, he put his foot in his mouth.”

Indeed, McCain’s four homes and at least four other residential properties are held in the name of his wife, Cindy, and her dependent children through a series of partnerships and trusts. Their combined value is nearly $14 million.

Leach said McCain “tends to answer questions very rapidly without thinking of the correct answers. … I would call it honest confusion.”

This just keeps getting better and better. I think answering questions quickly without any regard for accuracy is a trait I look for in my leadership.

I honestly am having too much fun with this house bit.

Another Reason For the Freak-Out

by John Cole|  August 22, 20089:11 am| 80 Comments

This post is in: Election 2008, Republican Stupidity, Did You Know John McCain Was A POW?

The Republicans think they are the ones who own this line of attack. They realize that all the things they said in 2004 can come right back and bite them, as they apply just as fairly (or unfairly) to St. John (did you know he was a POW?). An example:

Joseph Farah, World Net Daily, “President Gigolo?”:

But if there is one characteristic of Kerry’s life that should disqualify him absolutely as a candidate for president, it is the fact that he has sought out millionaire wives to take care of him. Not to put too fine a point on it, he’s a serial gigolo.

Let me ask you this: How many single women do you know worth a hundred million dollars or more? . . . After raising children with her, Kerry sought and received an annulment of that long-term marriage. Then he married Teresa Heinz Kerry, the widow of a Senate colleague five years his senior. She is worth approximately $500 million.

Is marrying well good preparation for serving as the president of the United States? . . . . He’s always had a net underneath him throughout his political career — in his case, a net woven of homespun 24K gold.

And my favorite, Rush Limbaugh:

Rush Limbaugh Online, “John Kerry’s Resume”:

[Kerry] has lived the life of a millionaire living off the inherited wealth of his two wives. As an Ivy League educated millionaire who did not have to work for his fortune, Mr. Kerry never had to worry about the money he earned, the taxes he paid, or the programs he and Ted Kennedy forced the rest of us to pay for. . . . Mr. Kerry Heinz is not effected (sic) when these neighborhoods are destroyed and working class families lose the largest asset in their retirement plans — their home’s value.

Goose, gander.

It stings even more because they walked right into it. They are the ones who spent the last month talking about elitism and being out of touch. They are the ones who made the celebrity ads. For a campaign team that has allegedly learned from Clinton’s mistakes in the primary, they must have missed it when Hillary spent weeks calling Obama elitist and attempting to profit on the “bitter” comments, only to have this happen:

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and former President Clinton reported $20.4 million in income for 2007 and more than $109 million since 2000 as they gave the public the most detailed look at their finances in eight years.

Oops. USA Today breaks it down for you:

By dinnertime, the McCain team had released an ad about Obama and his former fundraiser Antoin Rezko, who was convicted of corruption charges in June. On the same day in 2005, Obama bought his house and Rezko’s wife bought an adjoining lot owned by the same sellers. She later sold a strip of it to Obama.

McCain, who has portrayed Obama as an elitist, is the son and grandson of admirals. The Associated Press estimates his wife, a beer heiress, is worth $100 million. Obama was raised by a single mother who relied at times on food stamps, and went to top schools on scholarships and loans. His income has increased from book sales since he spoke at the 2004 Democratic convention.

They are the ones who were pushing this sort of nonsense about a guy from a broken home who worked his way up from food stamps to a comfortable life, never in a million years thinking that the Democrats would, in fact, fight back. But he is. And they are shocked, angry, and most of all, scared. Their entire campaign is on the rails, with one comment from McCain exposing how very vulnerable they are on the battlefield they prepped.

Memo to Obama campaign- keep pushing this. And when they talk about Ayers, look into a guy named Bonanno. Why was McCain getting party invitations from mob bosses? When they talk about Rezko, talk about Charles Keating. And in both cases, just as it is with the current out of touch rich guy nonsense the Republicans themselves brought up, their candidate is more vulnerable. Obama was eight when Ayers was a factor. Their candidate actually admits to guilt in the Keating affair. When they say Rezko, you say Keating Five. And again, unlike Rezko in which nothing took place, there is something there for the Keating Five.

And whatever you do, ignore the concern trolls claiming Obama is ceding the high ground and “so much for the new politics.” The new politics is about competent governance and working with the opposition to gain consensus on worthwhile goals. The new politics requires getting elected, and taking accurate statements made by your opponent (in this case, their own admission they do not know how many houses they own) and highlighting them is not ceding the high ground. It is politics. Watch it again (I saw it this morning on CNN while I was having coffee):

Nothing in the Obama commercial was taken out of context. Nothing was distorted. McCain made those comments about the economy, he made the statement that he did not know how many houses he owns.

And, as a side note, as someone who was a Republican forever, watching a Democrat actually not only fight back, but fight back capably, quickly, and smartly IS a new kind of politics of a sort. In the past, you all sat by, let yourself get trashed and defined, and then wailed plaintively about mean Republicans taking the low road. Ask anyone out there- if someone punches you, you are allowed to punch back. It isn’t your fault if your assailant thought he was bullying a wimp but accidentally picked a fight with a heavyweight.

They are scared. They don’t know what hit them, and are about to bust out their limp Ayers nonsense and Rev. Wright stuff several months before the general. Keep punching. You know you are hurting them when the first thing McCain does is… hide behind his wife.

Could making a really, really shitty movie be portrayed as an act of heroism. Seriously, folks, viewers of An American Carol are not out to get you because you are conservative, they just want to make sure you make something as criminally unfunny as this ever again (especially on their dime):

If I paid ten bucks to see that, I would want some revenge on David Zucker, too. And sadly for the film’s producer, he wasn’t a POW for 5 years and doesn’t have a “get-out-of-jail-free” card.

More here.

The Freak-Out Makes More Sense Now

This post is in: Election 2008, Did You Know John McCain Was A POW?

I may have been on to something earlier when I mentioned Millionaire Mittens:

Two Republicans close to the situation say McCain has apparently settled on Mitt Romney as his running mate.

Two additional GOP sources say McCain had not offered the slot to anyone as of Thursday night, and that he could still change his mind.

If McCain did decide on Multiple-Choice Mitt, himself a millionaire and owner of a bunch of homes, you can understand more clearly why they are now completely freaking out over the first real punch Obama has thrown at them despite their having been running attack ads for months. This hurts.

And even then, it was an unforced error. You simply can not let your surrogates run around charging the other guy with being out of touch because he owns a house and knows something about an “exotic” piece of lettuce that is so “rare” you can find it in a Wal-Mart grocery anywhere in the country when you are so filthy stinking rich that you wear $500.00 imported shoes and can’t even remember how many houses you own.

*** Update ***

It seems Al Giordano and I have come to the same conclusion. No Mittens. Damnit. Aside from his gaffe-prone transparent phoniness and the rich-guy-out-of-touch stuff, I was really looking for some evangelical v. Mormon political fratricide.

I decided that the footnote in the last post was distracting, so I moved it here. The babaganoush at Istanbul Grille is excellent, as is the rest of their stuff. Give them some business if you’re in the Shadyside/Oakland part of Pittsburgh so that they’re still there whenever I can eat out again.

What Publius Said

by Tim F|  August 21, 200810:09 pm| 32 Comments

This post is in: Republican Stupidity, Did You Know John McCain Was A POW?, Republican Crime Syndicate - aka the Bush Admin.

On why the many houses matter. The point that Publius makes is not academic – many of John McCain’s character flaws can be traced to a near-lifetime of being sheltered behind vast wealth. Take his gambling habit.

“Enjoying craps opens up a window on a central thread constant in John’s life,” says John Weaver, McCain’s former chief strategist, who followed him to many a casino. “Taking a chance, playing against the odds.” Aides say McCain tends to play for a few thousand dollars at a time and avoids taking markers, or loans, from the casinos, which he has helped regulate in Congress.

Casino games are an unwinnable stupid tax, especially the games of chance that McCain compulsively favors. The only people who can afford to throw ‘a few thousand dollars at a time’ into a guaranteed losing game are either sheltered rich, or self-destructive addicts on a last bender before homelessness. McCain has been conditioned by life to believe that he can do whatever he wants because a bottomless pile of family money will shield him from consequences.

McCain’s public life reveals the same dynamic at play. He flies into uncontrollable rages at things that most of us consider normal (e.g., a Republican colleague criticizes a policy position). On foreign policy, supposedly the Republican candidate’s strong suit, McCain’s approach weirdly parallels his private weakness. It isn’t by accident that he attracted a coterie of neocon dregs with whom he surrounds himself. Beginning with Randy Scheunemann and running down the list, most of these guys disgraced themselves so badly in Iraq that they aren’t even welcome in many Republican circles any more. They’re reckless gamblers, creative destruction, roll the dice and see what happens types. If you disagree or god forbid, criticize their fragile egos then you’re a fucking Jew-hater terrorist who should be locked up until every American enemy has been killed.

Take a look at the guy in office right now. People who knew me in 2000 ask how I knew that the Bush administration would go bad in such an extreme way. The answer is Harken Energy, and any other thing that George Bush’s lesser son tried and failed to do until he hooked up with a decent pack of advisers for his Texas gubernatorial bid. Like most children with overindulgent, wealthy mothers George W. doesn’t take care of his toys.

John McCain may have once lived like a normal person, but by now he’s spent most of his adult life sheltered behind a bubble of vast wealth. In that way he resembles President Bubble Boy more than almost any office holder in DC. Some months ago I worked out how many things I need to cut back now that I’m paying for Honda Fit. Now I’m worried that the Sharp Edge and the excellent Turkish restaurant around the block will go under before the wife and I see it again. When do you suppose was the last time McCain had to think like that?

It is a late Sunday afternoon in April, and I am sitting in a condominium in Coronado, California, taking in the view of the gorgeous San Diego Bay with Cindy McCain. She closed on the place just two weeks earlier, and the only things unpacked so far are the family photos that dot almost every surface. It’s her family’s second condo in the building. “I like the ocean, and the kids love it here, and I love that,” she tells me, curled up on a nondescript couch that looks like it might have come with the apartment. “When I bought the first one, my husband, who is not a beach person, said, ‘Oh, this is such a waste of money; the kids will never go.’ Then it got to the point where they used it so much I couldn’t get in the place. So I bought another one.”

Remember that a war has to go incredibly, catastrophically bad for those in McCain’s social stratum to feel any pain. It isn’t class warfare to point out that extreme privilege breeds a mindset that isn’t compatible with good government. It’s simply an observation that anybody who works with adolescents can tell you: when indulgent parents take away consequences, kids often go feral. Four more years of that is something that I can do without.
