Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“Squeaker” McCarthy

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Presidents are not kings, and Plaintiff is not President.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

No one could have predicted…

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

The revolution will be supervised.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

In my day, never was longer.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

A Challenge For You All

Try to read this extended whinge by Wall Street jackasses without wanting to break something:

“They’re not going to make the kind of money they wanted,” said William Hambrecht, chairman of San Francisco- based WR Hambrecht & Co., who designed the Dutch auction of Google Inc.’s 2004 initial public offering. “I’m not sure people really have come to terms with the fact that what we had was a financial bubble.”

New rules from the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision will more than double capital requirements for banks. Fixed- income revenue could fall 25 percent under a draft of the Volcker rule, which may outlaw so-called flow trading, according to an Oct. 10 note from Brad Hintz, a Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. analyst. Leverage has been cut by more than half at banks including Goldman Sachs and UBS AG, and an Oliver Wyman and Morgan Stanley (MS) report estimates that regulation may reduce returns on equity by 4 to 6 percentage points.

The new rules are the result of “societal objectives of a populist administration in Washington,” private-equity investor Wilbur Ross said in an e-mail. John Phelan, co-founder of MSD Capital LP, a New York-based fund that manages assets for billionaire Michael Dell, said “the whole capitalist system is being called into question.”

***

Uncertainty didn’t stop some on Wall Street from profiting during the U.S. housing collapse, when Deutsche Bank AG trader Greg Lippmann helped create and profited from a multibillion- dollar market in subprime-based derivatives. He said Wall Street will have fewer exotic products to sell and trade, drawing an analogy to the popular no-reservations restaurant Torrisi Italian Specialties.

“No choosing, great food, low price, no pizzazz,” said Lippmann, co-founder of New York hedge fund LibreMax Capital LLC. “A couple of years ago, the hottest place to go would be someplace that they just spent $5 million decorating and they’ve got three or four models answering the phones. People want stripped-down now.”

***

Options Group’s Karp said he met last month over tea at the Gramercy Park Hotel in New York with a trader who made $500,000 last year at one of the six largest U.S. banks.

The trader, a 27-year-old Ivy League graduate, complained that he has worked harder this year and will be paid less. The headhunter told him to stay put and collect his bonus.

“This is very demoralizing to people,” Karp said. “Especially young guys who have gone to college and wanted to come onto the Street, having dreams of becoming millionaires.”

I’ve always wondered where the assholes on HGTV shopping for their first home at the age of 25, and bitching about the appliances not being stainless steel or that the bathroom only has one sink came from. Now I know.

Holy shit, Jesse LaGreca was on a Bobblehead show this weekend (via via):

I just found this out and haven’t watched it all the way through yet. You might all be Rickrolled partway through.

Apologies if someone already blogged about this here. I can’t find it if so.

Bobo summarized: protesting is hard, let’s go make third parties. A sad effort, since Bobo doesn’t usually crib from D-listers like Matt Miller. Also too, Bobo says some crazy shit that may irritate even the most Vichy liberal tote-baggers.

Relatedly, Kthug asks:

A question to which I think I know the answer: A number of my colleagues in the commentariat write longingly about the need for a “centrist” who will propose doing what needs to be done — combine short-run stimulus with long-term measures that will reduce the deficit.

So, will any of them notice that, according to the CBO score (pdf), Harry Reid’s version of the American Jobs Act does exactly that?

If the establishment can’t find a clear path to making the Mittster king-for-life, they’ll double down on Bloomberg-Bayh. To do anything else would be too partisan!

Occupy Toledo

by Kay|  October 10, 20113:36 pm| 78 Comments

This post is in: Enhanced Protest Techniques, Kochsuckers, Jump! You Fuckers!

I went down to Occupy Toledo this morning. I was told a couple of years ago to count police officers and not protestors, with the general rule being one police officer for every twenty protestors. If that holds true, there were about 200 protestors there.

This police officer was not actually protesting, although I appreciate how he joined right in for the picture-taking.

This girl did not want her face revealed, because she is looking for work and is afraid public protesting will harm her chances with an employer. When she’s not covering her face with this sign, she wore a bandanna pulled up over the lower half of her face, which made her look a little dangerous and mysterious.

The No On Issue Two folks were there, and the voting rights people, and lots of cheerful and stoic union members (including Justice For Janitors), and two Ron Paul supporters. Every Ron Paul supporter I have ever met is young, male and has tools snapped to his belt: knife sheaves, chains, lariats, big bunches of jangly keys. You can hear a Ron Paul supporter approaching behind you, if you remain alert. Just put your hand out to receive the Repeal the Fed leaflet, because it’s coming.

I couldn’t stay for the general assembly, but the protest itself was just great. A real positive feeling. There were lots and lots of local media trucks there.

The radical center

by DougJ|  October 10, 20111:46 pm| 148 Comments

This post is in: Jump! You Fuckers!, Our Awesome Meritocracy, Our Failed Media Experiment, Our Failed Political Establishment, We Are All Mayans Now

I’ve been reading endless comparisons of the Tea Party with Occupy Together and nearly all of them end with some nonsense about the evils of polarizations and Our Republic’s need for teh centrism.

Let’s think about the policy ideas of people who now call themselves centrists, we’ll take the Kaplan editorial page as an example. You have support for preemptive wars and for the privatization/voucherization of Social Security and Medicare, you have opposition to traditional Keynesian economics and collective bargaining rights, you have acceptance of torture and indefinite detentions. Yes, on social issues, they’re more to the left — support for marriage equality, for example. But on the main economic/fiscal and foreign policy issues, they mostly embrace ideas that would have been far too right to have been considered mainstream 30 or 40 years ago.

I am no longer convinced that there is any meaningful distinction between the Serious Center and the Tea Party. Sure, the Village wouldn’t put us on the gold standard or force a massive treasury default or teach creationism in schools, but that’s about it.

Matt Yglesias, no liberal apparently a self-described liberal, at least, asks a very good question:

In retrospect, a lot of what’s happened in the developed world since 1980 seems to have been based on the logic that since the mixed economy with regulated markets and a welfare state has outperformed command and control socialism, then clearly a pure to free market purism will produce even better results. But what if the success of the mixed economy with regulated markets and a welfare state proves that we should endorse . . . a mixed economy with regulated markets and a welfare state? Just because one slice of pizza is delicious doesn’t mean you should eat the whole pie.

I think that one of the reasons western capitalism has been so stable is that it has tempered free-market purity with a social safety net. Another is that institutions like unions and a free press have given workers some reasonably peaceful means to push back against their Galtian overlords.

A lot of that may be gone soon. Unions are weaker than ever and national media is not only completely dominated by corporate interests but largely delivered by millionaires who naturally identify with others in their economic class.

I can see this all ending very badly.

While the Guardian has a OWS and Occupy America stories on their front page, today’s New York Times doesn’t find anything fit to front page. What’s missing from both sets of coverage is a sense of what motivates the individual protesters, so I’m looking for more independent sources.

Here’s a report from a self-described libertarian who hung out at Occupy Wall Street and filed a report. Overall, he’s impressed by the attitude of the protesters, and he thinks that the movement will leave a lasting impact. He also wonders why the Times doesn’t have an embed in Zuccoti Park. (via Jay Rosen)

Josh Harkinson of Mother Jones spent the weekend in Manhattan with the protesters and filed a set of dispatches and tweets. MoJo also has a map of Occupy America protests.

And, in case you missed it, DougJ and I went to the Rochester, NY Occupy protest on Friday and I posted some photos and video.

If you’ve seen some good reporting, especially about your local Occupy protest, please leave it in the comments.

But why wonder why

If future historians want to understand the mindset of early 21st century establishment media, this screenshot (Kaplan, Robert Samuelson) should do the trick:

My own thoughts: guitars not guillotines. If Occupy Together can prevent an otherwise inevitable Reign Of Terror, then our Galtian overlords should thank the hippies for their lives and their heads.
