Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Everybody saw this coming.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

I really should read my own blog.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

People are weird.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

If marriage is the equivalent of selling yourself into slavery, women with self respect should reject the offer.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

Let’s finish the job.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

When you’re in more danger from the IDF than from Russian shelling, that’s really bad.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

We’re not going back!

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

Explosive Devices Found in Mail Sent to Hillary Clinton and Obama https://t.co/fQxZosSUEE

Conservative figures and media, including Fox News, Alex Jones, and Donald Trump, have inspired harassment of journalists, violence in the streets, and now bombs being sent to former presidents and political opponents.

This isn't alarmist. It's reality. 1/

— Jared Yates Sexton (@JYSexton) October 24, 2018

If we had a properly functioning media, we’d have a national conversation about how the president of our country feeds the flames of domestic terrorism. https://t.co/IAa81WTPi3

— Neera Tanden (@neeratanden) October 24, 2018

When Trump and his allies talk about "civility" from their opponents they don't mean being respectful or polite, neither of which is a value the president can claim to hold. They mean bending the knee or staying silent.

— *Palpatine voice* UNLIMITED DADPUNS? (@AdamSerwer) October 24, 2018

I screenshot the last one because I expect Haberman or Bloomberg to delete or change their work.

No condemnation of violence from any Republican leader. Maybe Jeff Flake or Susan Collins will speak up against violence “on both sides.”

So a undercover sting of Claire McCaskill got her on tape saying she supports an assault weapons ban.

McCaskill *voted for the assault weapons ban* in 2013.

Quite a scoop.https://t.co/s33wc68gvm pic.twitter.com/yobA0ndSg8

— Dave Weigel (@daveweigel) October 17, 2018

Who the godsdamned hell is supporting James O’Keefe III’s vanity project, anyway? I read somewhere that he had a trust fund, but haven’t been able to find verification. Of course there’s never a shortage of willing donors for RWNJ ratfvckers, but it would be nice to have receipts…

Project Veritas infiltrated McCaskill’s campaign and gained access to voter files, her campaign lawyer says. McCaskill is pushing the state AG, her opponent in the senate race, to take action against the group. https://t.co/5NCB4tPg5q

— southpaw (@nycsouthpaw) October 19, 2018

Good for McCaskill! Some pundit said she was ‘fortunate in her enemies’, but looks to me like she makes her own luck:

… An employee of Project Veritas approached McCaskill’s campaign in May and expressed an interest in volunteering and interning on the campaign, according to an affidavit from McCaskill’s Columbia field director Luke Tonant.

As an intern, the Project Veritas employee, who Tonant knew as “Adam Thomson,” had access to the campaign’s voter information database for a total of 20 hours between May and July, according to the affidavit.

The Project Veritas employee continued to volunteer for the campaign after resigning his internship in July and even attended McCaskill’s primary election night party, where he obtained the video of McCaskill speaking about her support for gun control measures.

The affidavit is part of a 115-page complaint McCaskill’s attorney filed with Hawley’s office Thursday in an effort to pressure the Republican attorney general and McCaskill’s opponent to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate whether Project Veritas violated Missouri law in the course of obtaining the videos…

Never Let Your Opponent Set The Terms Of Debate

by Cheryl Rofer|  October 16, 20189:12 am| 290 Comments

This post is in: 2020 Elections, Dolt 45, Domestic Politics, Open Threads, "Lock Her Up!!", Blatant Liars and the Lies They Tell, General Stupidity

Last night, I told a friend that Elizabeth Warren’s DNA test was a strategic mistake. I haven’t wanted to say much about it, because I didn’t want to add fuel to the fire. But Democrats and others opposing Donald Trump have to get strategically smarter.

Never let your opponent set the terms of debate.

Never let your opponent set the terms of debate.

Never let your opponent set the terms of debate.

Apparently the lie about Warren’s using Native American heritage started in an earlier race. But Trump added the “Pocahontas” part, an obvious racial slur. He also added a challenge that he would pay $1 million dollars to a charity of Warren’s choice if she would take a DNA test.

Probably the way Warren’s people thought about this was: Take the DNA test, demand the $1 million, show Trump to be a piker.

WRONG

History shows that Trump is a piker. The $1 million challenge gives him an opportunity to continue the smear. And there was no way he would stop the “Pocahontas” thing in response to a DNA test. Negative commentary from Native Americans gave him more ammunition. All that was predictable.

Trump gets some things right, and his idea of hitting back hard is one of them. Warren should have, the first time Trump said “Pocahontas,” hit back hard by calling that for what it was.  RACISM. Say that her heritage, like everyone else’s, has nothing to do with her eligibility for office. Give the story of Pocahontas and show how the wrongs against her are perpetrated by Trump’s bigotry.

I don’t want to make a big thing out of this – we have more important points to make as we move toward the election. But please, please, Democrats get smart about this.

Never let your opponent set the terms of debate.

Russiagate Open Thread: Peter Smith, “Rob Tyler”, and General Flynn

SCOOP: Deceased GOP operative Peter Smith secretly raised $100k from 4 donors in Oct. 2016 as part of a project to obtain Hillary Clinton’s emails, an effort that documents and sources say is being actively probed by Mueller https://t.co/eHvvoYjxjM

— Dustin Volz (@dnvolz) October 7, 2018

Smith, who said he was working on behalf of Michael Flynn, was warned he was likely getting mixed up with Russian hackers in his pursuit of emails, but he continued to pursue them just weeks before the election. https://t.co/eHvvoYjxjM

— Dustin Volz (@dnvolz) October 7, 2018

Clintonphobia must be a helluva drug, because it does not seem these were stupid people — unlike the Putin pawn they helped install in the Oval Office. But it sounds to me like these staunch Republicans knew they were getting played by the GRU and didn’t care, as long as That Woman was properly punished for the crime of being a Democrat, and uppity.

A veteran Republican operative and opposition researcher solicited and raised at least $100,000 from donors as part of an effort to obtain what he believed to be emails stolen from Hillary Clinton, activities that remain of intense interest to federal investigators working for special counsel Robert Mueller’s office and on Capitol Hill.

Peter W. Smith, an Illinois businessman with a long history of involvement in GOP politics, sought and collected the funds from at least four wealthy donors as part of the plan to obtain Mrs. Clinton’s stolen emails from hackers just weeks before election day in 2016, according to people familiar with the matter and documents reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.

Mr. Smith’s effort to find what he believed were some 33,000 deleted emails Mrs. Clinton said were personal was first reported by the Journal in a 2017 story, but the extent of his planning went far beyond what was previously known. Mr. Smith died 10 days after describing his efforts to a reporter for the Journal…

Mr. Smith went to extraordinary lengths to ensure the privacy and secrecy of his projects, according to emails and court records reviewed by the Journal and a person familiar with the matter.

One email showed the anti-Clinton funds referenced as donations that were to be sent to a Washington, D.C.-based scholarship fund for Russian students.

[Was one of them named ‘Maria Butina’?]

GOP Misogyny Open Thread: “A Female Assistant”

.@SenateMajLdr: "We have hired a female assistant to go on staff and to ask these questions in a respectful and professional way. We want this hearing to be handled very professionally not a political sideshow…" #Kavanaugh pic.twitter.com/N0hGKA6NqX

— CSPAN (@cspan) September 25, 2018

Shorter McConnell: We are powerful white men, and when we make a mess, it is our right to demand that a woman come in and clean up after us. Per the Washington Post:

Republican senators have selected Arizona prosecutor Rachel Mitchell to question Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh and the woman who has accused the Supreme Court nominee of sexually assaulting her when they were teenagers, a top senator announced Tuesday.

Mitchell is the chief of the special victims division of the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, which deals with sexual assault cases, among others. A registered Republican, Mitchell has worked for in the county attorney’s office for 26 years.

In enlisting Mitchell to join their staff, Republican senators are taking an unusual step. They are turning to her to ask what are expected to be personal and potentially painful questions about the woman’s youth on live television, sparing the all-male panel of 11 Republican senators on the committee some uncomfortable exchanges that could sway the public’s opinion about the session…

The division Mitchell heads deals with family violence, physical and sexual abuse of children, and sex offenses, including sex assault cases. Mitchell oversees about 40 to 50 people in the division, said Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery.

Mitchell has a long history of investigating years-old sex crimes and allegations that are difficult to corroborate, including in her role re-examining hundreds of cases that were unresolved and inadequately investigated by the sheriff’s office, Montgomery said.

“Over the course of Rachel’s career, she has dealt with victims in this very circumstance of delayed disclosure and circumstances where allegations were difficult to corroborate,” Montgomery said. “She has had to make a decision as a prosecutor whether or not those cases can move forward.”…

You’ve got to hand it to these guys that they think introducing a “sex crime prosecutor” into this story still doesn’t look as bad as if they asked the questions.

— Schooley (@Rschooley) September 26, 2018

If the Republicans need a woman on the Judiciary Committee to ask questions for them, they can borrow one of ours. We have four.

Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley confirmed that the committee has hired an outside counsel to question Christine Blasey Ford and Judge Brett Kavanaugh. The individual is a woman with expertise in sex crimes prosecution, an aide told CNN.

— Shimon Prokupecz (@ShimonPro) September 25, 2018

Did they consider just having mother sit with them for the questioning? pic.twitter.com/UN6wqNcTwB

Or perhaps… pic.twitter.com/FEDEURSy1H

— Schooley (@Rschooley) September 25, 2018

The Gorsuch nomination went smoothly and bumped Trump’s numbers up for a while. The Kavanaugh circus might have the same effect by going disastrously enough to deflect attention from the White House chaos and Trump’s tweets for a few weeks.

— Jacob T. Levy (@jtlevy) September 25, 2018

Multiple things can be true at once:
1. A professional questioner is better for truth-seeking but
2. They don't care about truth-seeking and
3. They're doing it to avoid spectacle and because they can't resist being choads but
4. Result may be better truth-seeking despite them

— LaughedAtHat (@Popehat) September 25, 2018

“Better truth-seeking”, sigh…

Take Note: Kavanaugh's credibility is at the crux of his confirmation to the Supreme Court – and a new Yale classmate says on the record Kavanaugh lied in his Fox interview, or to him, about when he lost his virginity.

"Huge scoop." And the statuette for best all-time use of a false narrative and unnamed sources by a national reporter to advance an administration's agenda passes from Judith Miller to Adam Goldman. The NYT keeps the crown. https://t.co/NytJKIiTKS

— David Simon (@AoDespair) September 21, 2018

Fortunately, the attempt to defenestrate Rod Rosenstein seems to be going nowhere — for the moment. But what in the name of Murphy the Trickster God could the NYTimesmen responsible for starting this rumor have been thinking?…

It seems like at least once a month, the Times likes to remind us of how great Margaret Sullivan was for them, and how bad for them it’s been since they let her go.

— golikehellmachine (@golikehellmachi) September 22, 2018

and adds to the narrative that NYT did WH’s bidding today

— Eric Boehlert (@EricBoehlert) September 22, 2018

I now count three different news orgs reporting Rosenstein’s comment abt wiretapping was clearly a joke. how on earth did NYT run the story it did???

— Eric Boehlert (@EricBoehlert) September 22, 2018

Just because the New York Times has a history of playing up some big stories that seem to benefit Trump doesn’t mean…

wait, I forgot where I was going with this…

— Schooley (@Rschooley) September 22, 2018

Because the people who a year ago were able to quash stuff like this are gone or headed out the door?

Also, since then, most of the top level FBI people involved in the Russia investigation have been pushed out. This could be same people who pushed BS to NYT in Oct 2016 https://t.co/EK1Fs7Em53
