Mitt Romney’s Gay Problem

by Imani Gandy (ABL)|  May 3, 20124:05 pm| 73 Comments

This post is in: Gay Rights are Human Rights, Romney of the Uncanny Valley, Schadenfreude

Mitt-3-PO seems not to understand that when you fail to stand behind a member of your team, especially when that team member belongs to a class of people you know is derided by the side your team represents, that team member is going to be pissed.

Those of us who are not emotionally vacuous are not surprised that Richard Grenell, who recently resigned his post at the Romney campaign, is pissed.

From The New York Times:

It was the biggest moment yet for Mitt Romney’s foreign policy team: a conference call last Thursday, dialed into by dozens of news outlets from around the globe, to dissect and denounce President’s Obama record on national security.

But Richard Grenell, the political strategist who helped organize the call and was specifically hired to oversee such communications, was conspicuously absent, or so everyone thought.

It turned out he was at home in Los Angeles, listening in, but stone silent and seething. A few minutes earlier, a senior Romney aide had delivered an unexpected directive, according to several people involved in the call.

“Ric,” said Alex Wong, a policy aide, “the campaign has requested that you not speak on this call.” Mr. Wong added, “It’s best to lay low for now.”

For Mr. Grenell, the message was clear: he had become radioactive.

The Romney campaign doesn’t get it:

The day after Mr. Grenell was hired, Bryan Fischer, a Romney critic with the American Family Association, told  nearly 1,400 followers on Twitter: “If personnel is policy, his message to the pro-family community: drop dead.” The next day, the conservative Daily Caller published an online column that summed up the anger of the Christian right, linking Mr. Grenell’s hiring to the appointment of gay judges to the New Jersey Supreme Court.

As the critiques from conservatives intensified, Mr. Grenell pressed senior aides to allow him to speak about national security issues, arguing that the best way to soothe the ire over his appointment would be to let him do his job: defend his boss and take swipes at President Obama.

But Mr. Romney’s advisers balked at the idea of his taking a public role, saying that the best way to get beyond the controversy was for Mr. Grenell to lower his profile until it blew over. A big worry: that reporters would ask Mr. Grenell about his Twitter feed or sexuality, turning him rather than Mr. Romney’s foreign policy into the story.

~snip~

Romney advisers attribute at least some of Mr. Grenell’s frustration to the inevitable complications of starting a new job within a large, competitive and rigid organization filled with big egos.

But the final straw, for Mr. Grenell, was the conference call on April 26. After being told not to speak, he felt deeply undermined, worrying it would erode his credibility with journalists who had expected to hear from him, friends said.

~snip~

Several of them said they were baffled. They felt the storm had largely passed.  “We were shocked,” one caller said. “We could not persuade him to stay.”

Several gay leaders said the campaign failed to grasp the message it had sent when it told him to lie low.  “Clearly, the Romney campaign thought if they could put him in a box for a while it would go away,” said Christopher Barron, a founder of GOProud, a gay Republican group in Washington. “It is an unforced error on their part.”

Really? The Romney campaign was baffled as to why the man they hired as their foreign policy spokesperson was told not to speak during a major conference call about foreign policy out of fealty to religious nutbags like Bryan J. Fischer? Baffled?!

Look, as I’ve said previously, Grenell is a misogynist dick, and I don’t feel sorry for the guy. Grenell is gay and still chose to align himself with a party filled with people who hate him for who he is, and who kiss the ring of the most right-wing homophobic assholes.

Still, Romney hired him and Romney should have stuck by him. Romney should have let Grenell do his job and he should have told the likes of Bryan Fischer to eat his magic underpants. Also, Romney should have known that not letting Grenell do his job in the hopes that the controversy would blow over was never a tactic that was going to work. The right-wing haters don’t forget, and they would never have been cool with A Gay in their midst. The controversy never would have blown over.

Romney blew it.

Tom Friedman, last July:

Write it down: Americans Elect. What Amazon.com did to books, what the blogosphere did to newspapers, what the iPod did to music, what drugstore.com did to pharmacies, Americans Elect plans to do to the two-party duopoly that has dominated American political life — remove the barriers to real competition, flatten the incumbents and let the people in. Watch out.

Yes, watch out idiots with more money than sense, because here it comes:

A group clearing the path for an independent White House bid on Tuesday canceled the first phase of its search for a bipartisan ticket because declared and draft candidates aren’t mustering enough preliminary support.

Americans Elect scrapped a virtual caucus that had been planned for next week. Another round of voting set for May 15 also is in jeopardy; a third is to be held on May 22. Candidates must meet a certain threshold of support to be eligible for the caucuses.

Ileana Wachtel, a spokeswoman for the group, says no one gathered enough online “clicks” to qualify.

These compulsive masturbators raised $22 million and spent $9 million on their website. Kudos to whomever fucked them out of that chunk of change–what an epic killing that was. If there was a hall of fame for IT screwjobs, this one would be in it.

Rupert’s Terrible, Horrible, Very Bad, No Good Morning

by Zandar|  May 1, 20127:54 am| 33 Comments

This post is in: All we want is life beyond the thunderdome, Blatant Liars and the Lies They Tell, Decline and Fall, Our Failed Media Experiment, Schadenfreude

It seems that Britain MP’s have decided that Rupert Murdoch running a major media empire in their midst is not in Blighty’s best interests.

Global media tycoon Rupert Murdoch is not a “fit and proper person” to run a major international company, British lawmakers investigating phone hacking at his tabloid the News of the World reported Tuesday.

The ruling could prompt British regulators to force him to sell his controlling stake in British Sky Broadcasting, a significant part of his media empire.

This one’s pretty big, folks.  It means whether or not old Rupert here was actually the fellow behind the phone hacking nonsense, British lawmakers have decided that he should be held responsible for it.  Bloomberg News is even more blunt:

Murdoch “turned a blind eye and exhibited willful blindness to what was going on in his companies and publications,” the House of Commons Culture, Media and Sport Committee said in a report published in London today. “This culture, we consider, permeated from the top throughout the organization and speaks volumes about the lack of effective corporate governance at News Corp.”

Ouch.  The question now is the level of punishment that Murdoch and News Corp will receive.  It could be nothing.  It could be having to divest itself of all B Sky B holdings.  We’ll see.  But this is the first real blow to Murdoch we’ve seen from the fallout of the phone hacking, and I’m betting it won’t be the last.

[UPDATE] In the comments MattF finds the Guardian article containing the full text of the Select Committee report.

Labour MPs and the sole Liberal Democrat on the committee, Adrian Sanders, voted together in a bloc of six against the five Conservatives to insert the criticisms of Rupert Murdoch and toughen up the remarks about his son James. But the MPs were united in their criticism of other former News International employees.

The cross-party group of MPs said that Les Hinton, the former executive chairman of News International, was “complicit” in a cover-up at the newspaper group, and that Colin Myler, former editor of the News of the World, and the paper’s ex-head of legal, Tom Crone, deliberately withheld crucial information and answered questions falsely. All three were accused of misleading parliament by the culture select committee.

Interesting breakdown of the votes there.

Santorum has dropped out

So it’s all over the news and twitter that Santorum has dropped out.  I’m going to leave it to you fine people to discuss what happened when Santorum dropped out, what Santorum dropped on, what we use to clean up the mess from a Santorum drop, and how Romney caused Santorum to drop out.

Also, open thread.

Edit: As someone on twitter pointed out, now everyone who claimed that God told them to run for President has failed and dropped out.  So God has either one hell of a sense of humor, or s/he has a real mean streak.

Saturday Morning Open Thread: Choosing the Back-Up Substitute Clown

This post is in: Election 2012, Open Threads, Republican Stupidity, Romney of the Uncanny Valley, Schadenfreude

Now that Mitt “Willard” Romney has managed to emerge as the de facto GOP presidential nominee…

… I mean, of course the primary was rigged. The primaries are always rigged. This is not a surprise. Republican leadership knows that a Santorum candidacy in the general election would sink the party for at least eight years. I do think that there was a clear path for Santorum to seize the candidacy, and if he had acted differently over two weeks in February, he could be on top right now. The thing is, if you’re smart enough, you can accept the fact that the game is rigged, and then manipulate the rigged game to work in your favor. The Obama campaign managed it in 2008. Neither Gingrich nor Santorum (or Ron Paul) were smart enough to do it this year.

… some people, such as Charles Blow, are taking entirely too much joy in the schadenfreude:

The dream is dying. There will be no dynamic, charismatic, Reaganesque Republican presidential nominee this cycle. There won’t even be a consistent conservative. There will only be Mitt Romney.
__
With his wins on Tuesday in Wisconsin, Maryland and the District of Columbia, Romney has virtually guaranteed his lock on the Republican nomination and has practically thrown a bucket of ice water on his party’s desire for a transformative right-wing figure who could convincingly sell its draconian budget priorities and regressive social agenda to an increasingly weary middle…
__
That sound you hear is the sound of despair — the hard swallowing and deep breathing by reluctant Republicans crossing their fingers and praying for the best.
__
Maybe Romney will pick a game-changing running mate. Remember how well that worked last time?

Yeah, noted sketch comedian John McCain has already shared his opinion concerning such “rogue” choices… (don’t miss the video)

At the Washington Post, Eugene Robinson suppresses his laughter, barely, to handicap potential Romney running mates:

Playing second fiddle to Mitt Romney won’t be easy, but somebody has to be his running mate. Let’s handicap the field:

●Florida Sen. Marco Rubio: The choice who offers the biggest potential reward — for the biggest risk…
__
●Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan: A safer choice, yet one that would restrict Romney’s freedom to maneuver during the campaign….
__
●New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie: A potential game-changer who could save the ticket or doom it — either way, spectacularly…
__
●South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley: Given her talent for controversy, I’m begging on behalf of columnists everywhere, Mr. Romney. Please. Make our day.

And Robinson’s rogues’ gallery doesn’t even include two fairly high-profile GOP figures who, Paul Constant of Seattle’s Stranger points out, have already indicated their willingness to serve:

Santorum for Number Two!
A reporter for the Jesus News Network, or whatever, asked Rick Santorum if he’d be willing to serve as Mitt Romney’s vice presidential nominee. Santorum’s response?

Of course. I mean, look. I would do in this race as I always say, this is the most important race in our country’s history. I’m going to do everything I can. I’m doing everything I can. I’m out there…

So Rick Santorum would be willing to be the bottom for a man he’s described as a Massachusetts moderate and Republican-in-name-only who created the template for Obamacare. That’s mighty big of him. What a patriot!
__
UPDATE: Newt Gingrich “wouldn’t say no” to the Massachusetts moderate if he was asked to be vice president, either. What big hearts these two have!

Heck, let’s include Jim DeMint (R-TeaParty) in the mix. Sober analysts insist that no sane politician would risk a safe Senate seat for the chance to play second banana to the guy who’s going to get crushed by President Obama come November, but then, this is “Senator DeMinted” we’re talking about…

‘God Hates Fags’ Church Preparing Ad for Oink Limbaugh Show

by Imani Gandy (ABL)|  March 15, 20128:04 pm| 31 Comments

This post is in: Assholes, Schadenfreude

The Southern Poverty Law Center reports that Fred Phelps  and the bigoted wackaloons at Westboro Baptist Church are fixin’ to advertise on the Rush Limbaugh Show, if Oink will have them:

Guess who’s knocking on Rush Limbaugh’s door as his advertisers flee like rats from a sinking ship? It’s the people behind the infamous GodHatesFags website — the Westboro Baptist Church, the most notorious gay-bashing group in America — and they’re ready to step in to keep the embattled Limbaugh on the air.

“As a matter of fact, I can confirm that,” Westboro spokesman Steve Drain told Hatewatch today when asked if the church was seeking to advertise on “The Rush Limbaugh Show.” “We’re preparing our first ad at this very moment, and we’ll have a 30-second radio spot ready to go by Friday.”

Drain said he has been in contact with ad executives, but added that the Westboro spots will have to be produced before they are accepted or rejected. The radio ads would be posted as audio links Friday on the church’s websites, the Westboro spokesman said.

I guess when 156 advertiser drop you like a hot potato because you spew nasty  misogynist filth at a private citizen, calling her a slut and a prostitute and demanding that she post the videos online, it opens up some air-time for the most loathsome of your admirers.

That’s a solid brand you’ve got there, dude.
