Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

President Biden is doing good where he can, and getting it done.

No Justins, No Peace

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Everyone is in a bubble, but some bubbles model reality far better than others!

Can we lighten up on the doomsday scenarios?

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

Relentless negativity is not a sign that you are more realistic.

It’s a new day. Light all those Biden polls of young people on fire and throw away the ashes.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Russia bombs Ukraine’s maternity hospitals; Republicans in the House can’t sort out supporting Ukraine.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

In after Baud. Damn.

Bark louder, little dog.

The Supreme Court is corrupt. Democrats must win in November and force court reform.

Fani Willis claps back at Trump chihuahua, Jim Jordan.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

The US Supreme Court is on the ballot in november.

I’m just a talker, trying to find a channel!

#10FriskCommandments: It’s Not a Game, Son! [directed by @elonjames; rhymed by @jasiri_x]

If you listen to This Week in Blackness Radio (and if you don’t, I’m not sure what’s wrong with you, man), you know Elon James White has been hyped about Jasiri X’s new white hot jam, “10 Frisk Commandments.” Here’s what Elon had to say about it:

“I often joke about how my knowledge of what to do when I’m stopped by police officers all stems from Jay Z’s “99 Problems.” A few weeks ago at Netroots Nation I was hanging out with Jasiri X and it hit me. I run up to Jasiri and say “Dude! You should flip Biggie Smalls “10 Crack Commandments!” Make the #10FriskCommandments! What to do when you’re stopped and frisked!” Jasiri thought for a moment and said “That could work.” I was so excited about the idea of it and how great Jasiri is as an artist I offered to direct and shoot the video in Brooklyn on the spot. He brings this issue to light with such passion and clarity that I was glad to be apart of the project. And lets be honest. his verses are FIRE.”

Check out the video and share it like it’s your job:

Geraldo Rivera is Saying Stupid Things About Trayvon Martin Again

Im going to need people to stop saying stupid shit about the Trayvon Martin shooting. I’m looking at you, Geraldo:

“I was right about the hoodie wasn’t I,” said Rivera. “I hate to brag, but I got criticized by every pundit in America when I said Trayvon Martin would be alive today but for the fact that he was wearing thug wear – he was wearing the hoodie. Turns out now that we look at George Zimmerman’s interviews with the police; he didn’t profile Trayvon Martin because he was black, he profiled him because he was wearing a hoodie.”

“The headline is: Zimmerman is not a racist. Trayvon Martin would be alive today if he wasn’t wearing thug wear, if he wasn’t wearing that hoodie,” said Rivera.

Romney Tells Fox News He Has Secret Black Supporters

Apparently, Romney seems to think that black folks really do love him — they’re just afraid to say so in public. He claims that after the NAACP speech, he was approached by black leaders — who presumably were blinking Morse code at him during the speech to show their support, but Romney couldn’t understand them because his decoder chip was malfunctioning — and these Negroes gave him a hearty clap on the shoulder and said there’s an underground lair of black Romney supporters somewhere.

Or something.

Oh, this will go over well.

Presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney will address the NAACP’s national convention next month, a campaign aide confirmed Tuesday.

News of Romney’s plans to attend the convention, which takes place July 7-12 in Houston, was first reported by April Ryan of American Urban Radio Networks. Romney is scheduled to speak on July 11.

Ladies and gentlemen, you will not see a bigger concentration of sideeye in the known universe.

Racing To The Bottom

This post is in: An Unexamined Scandal, Black Jimmy Carter, Election 2008, Post-racial America, Vote Like Your Country Depends On It, Blatant Liars and the Lies They Tell, Our Failed Political Establishment, Stuff About Black People Written By a Black Person

The number one golden rule of statistical analysis:  Correlation does not always equal causation.  Having said that, there’s pretty strong correlation in this NY Times analysis of areas with high incidences of racially charged Google searches and areas where President Obama underperformed in 2008 by Seth Stevens-Davidowitz:

Consider two media markets, Denver and Wheeling (which is a market evenly split between Ohio and West Virginia). Mr. Kerry received roughly 50 percent of the votes in both markets. Based on the large gains for Democrats in 2008, Mr. Obama should have received about 57 percent of votes in both Denver and Wheeling. Denver and Wheeling, though, exhibit different racial attitudes. Denver had the fourth lowest racially charged search rate in the country. Mr. Obama won 57 percent of the vote there, just as predicted. Wheeling had the seventh highest racially charged search rate in the country. Mr. Obama won less than 48 percent of the Wheeling vote.

Add up the totals throughout the country, and racial animus cost Mr. Obama three to five percentage points of the popular vote. In other words, racial prejudice gave John McCain the equivalent of a home-state advantage nationally.

Yes, Mr. Obama also gained some votes because of his race. But in the general election this effect was comparatively minor. The vast majority of voters for whom Mr. Obama’s race was a positive were liberal, habitual voters who would have voted for any Democratic presidential candidate. Increased support and turnout from African-Americans added only about one percentage point to Mr. Obama’s totals.

If my findings are correct, race could very well prove decisive against Mr. Obama in 2012. Most modern presidential elections are close. Losing even two percentage points lowers the probability of a candidate’s winning the popular vote by a third. And prejudice could cost Mr. Obama crucial states like Ohio, Florida and even Pennsylvania.

The argument here in my eyes is whether or not this has already been factored into the votes.  My theory is that in these areas where President Obama underperformed, race was a factor, but people were honest about not wanting to vote for President Obama, they just lied about the reason why.  If that’s correct, the polls actually are already taking this into effect, and why crosstabs don’t always appear to make sense.

You can say you’re planning to vote for Romney because of the economy.  You can really just not like Barack Obama because he’s black.  The point is people aren’t going to lie and say they’re going to vote for Obama when they lie about race as a factor, so the numbers are still where they would be if the reasons were honestly reported.

Second, in the areas where this is the most prevalent, President Obama lost by more than that margin in those markets.  West Virginia without the seven point thumb on the scale would have been at best a tie as Obama lost there by 15 points, and that’s again assuming the votes were not factored in.  If the average was 3-5 points, Kentucky’s 16 point McCain win would have been always out of reach.  The electoral college blunted the effect here and will do so again in 2012.

I’m not surprised by this and in fact it’s pretty damn impressive (and depressive) to see just how many American voters are lying to pollsters and kudos to the approach used here, but after 5 years of this in primaries and the 2008 and 2010 elections, by now the folks who aren’t going to vote for Obama based solely on race are either living in areas where the state will stay red anyway, or they’ve found other reasons to oppose him to tell pollsters instead.  I have my doubts that these preferences aren’t already being factored in to current polls…in fact I can almost guarantee you they are.

Which is good news, in one sense.  Yes, we should be very concerned with several million Americans out there with their bigotry in full bloom.  But they’re already counted in the polls is my guess.  No need to double-count them and borrow even more trouble.  If anything, at least Team Obama (and the rest of the Dems) know what markets now they need to be paying special attention to…and which are lost causes.  That’s valuable knowledge in and of itself.

Depressingly awful and maddeningly terrible knowledge, but useful nonetheless.

Now If You Want This Money Baby

CNN asks this question:

Justin Combs worked hard in high school to improve his football game and earn a 3.75 GPA . He recently received a $54,000 merit-based scholarship to UCLA, where he’ll play football.

In April, Forbes named Justin Combs’ dad,  Sean “P. Diddy” Combs, the wealthiest artist in hip-hop. Some say the family should return Justin’s scholarship, arguing that Combs should pay for his son’s education and taxpayer money should go to students with greater financial need. Other say Justin Combs earned the scholarship through his grades and athletic ability, and deserves to keep it.

What do you think? Should the Combs family keep, return or donate the money? Should students with wealthy parents have access to merit-based scholarships and financial aid?

Here’s my question: Why is this even a question?

Justin Combs earned an athletic scholarship.  It was based on merit, and he kept a 3.75 GPA as a student athlete to boot.  if he was anyone else’s son other than the most famous hip-hop media mogul on the planet, this wouldn’t be asked.  There’s nothing stopping P. Diddy from donating to UCLA in the amount of the scholarship too.  But it shouldn’t be up to mob rule whether he does or not, nor should we be questioning the scholarship.

I can’t help but think that if Justin’s father was a hedge fund manager or CEO of a tech company, this wouldn’t even be newsworthy (and my opinion that he not give back the merit scholarship would still stand.)  If I was completely cynical, I’d say this had something to do with race, but of course since Sean Combs is an extremely successful businessman who obviously raised a son with a fantastic work ethic and no small amount of physical skill, that can’t possibly be it either.  Maybe it’s politics, but if anything, Republicans should be screaming bloody murder over this.  Isn’t this exactly what they say the success story of a strong, intelligent black father raising a gifted son should be?

So again I’m baffled by why this is being asked at all.  Again, should P. Diddy donate to UCLA in the amount of his son’s scholarship (or more than that?)  Sure, if I were him, I’d make that happen, I can afford to.  But I wouldn’t make my son give up something he earned with his own ability, especially a son trying to make his own way in the world in his father’s very long shadow.  And we’re certainly not implying that Justin Combs didn’t earn a merit scholarship, right?

So unless one of those assumptions I made up there is wrong, why is CNN asking if he should return it outright?  If this was Bill Gates son, or Angelina Jolie’s daughter, or Mitt Romney son, would this still be an issue?

I’d like to know.
