Balloon Juicers- Our Time Has Finally Come

by John Cole|  August 30, 20107:02 pm| 99 Comments

This post is in: Beer Blogging, Sweet Fancy Moses!

I’ll drink to that:

But a new paper in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research suggests that — for reasons that aren’t entirely clear — abstaining from alcohol does actually tend to increase one’s risk of dying even when you exclude former drinkers. The most shocking part? Abstainers’ mortality rates are higher than those of heavy drinkers. (See pictures of booze under a microscope.)

Moderate drinking, which is defined as one to three drinks per day, is associated with the lowest mortality rates in alcohol studies. Moderate alcohol use (especially when the beverage of choice is red wine) is thought to improve heart health, circulation and sociability, which can be important because people who are isolated don’t have as many family members and friends who can notice and help treat health problems.

But why would abstaining from alcohol lead to a shorter life? It’s true that those who abstain from alcohol tend to be from lower socioeconomic classes, since drinking can be expensive. And people of lower socioeconomic status have more life stressors — job and child-care worries that might not only keep them from the bottle but also cause stress-related illnesses over long periods. (They also don’t get the stress-reducing benefits of a drink or two after work.)

But even after controlling for nearly all imaginable variables — socioeconomic status, level of physical activity, number of close friends, quality of social support and so on — the researchers (a six-member team led by psychologist Charles Holahan of the University of Texas at Austin) found that over a 20-year period, mortality rates were highest for those who had never been drinkers, second-highest for heavy drinkers and lowest for moderate drinkers.

I’ll be having tomatoes, basil, and mozarella with a drizzle of olive oil and a glass or three of pinot noir. Doctor’s orders.

Come See the Softer Side of Sears

by John Cole|  August 5, 20103:37 pm| 104 Comments

This post is in: Religion, Sweet Fancy Moses!, Teabagger Stupidity

This is too funny- the nutters are all worked up about Sears allegedly selling pr0n:

I felt sort of cheated, because I was just on the Sears website the other day looking at ovens and I didn’t see any porn. So I clicked the AFA link, which took me to this alert:

ears is content to sell pornography. And, if you are offended, they don’t seem to care!

We tried. In fact, we tried more than a half-dozen times to reach out to Sears quietly and professionally. Sears’ public relations department has refused to return our calls and emails.

Sears is currently offering giant posters of total nud**y on its website. Sears knows they are selling smut. Technology allows Sears to remove and stop selling these posters within minutes, so why won’t they?

I hope you will take my word for it, but if you must see the proof, click here. Warning: the posters are extremely graphic and offensive, although they have been edited by us.

For christ sakes, AFA, where is the damned porn? I need proof. So I clicked the link. And it took me to this:

At this point, I’m on the edge of my seat. The AFA has me completely seduced, and I’m ready to have my doors blown off by some really hardcore stuff. So once again, I click the link for proof:

Are you shitting m? How many links do I have to click? My second warning? I’ve been a naughty boy, AFA. Gimme the Pr0n:

At this point I’m starting to think they are just teasing me… but then I scrolled down and found the goods:

That’s it, AFA?

Wingnuts…

How Do They Say This Stuff With a Straight Face?

by John Cole|  July 14, 20103:31 pm| 138 Comments

This post is in: Tax Policy, The Party of Fiscal Responsibility, Assholes, Our Failed Media Experiment, Sweet Fancy Moses!, Teabagger Stupidity

And why are they not being called on it by the “journalists” they spew this nonsense to:

Republican Senate Minority Whip John Kyl was hammered by Democrats earlier this week for backing extending the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy – and insisting they need not be paid for.

Now Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (pictured) is backing up Kyl’s position.

“That’s been the majority Republican view for some time,” McConnell told TPMDC. “That there’s no evidence whatsoever that the Bush tax cuts actually diminished revenue. They increased revenue, because of the vibrancy of these tax cuts in the economy. So I think what Senator Kyl was expressing was the view of virtually every Republican on that subject.”

McConnell’s argument is that even though the government would be forgoing hundreds of billions of dollars in revenue by extending the tax cuts on relatively wealthy Americans, that loss will be more than offset by the growth spurred by keeping the money in taxpayers’ pockets. (The Obama administration wants to extend the cuts for Americans making less than $200,000 or $250,000 but let them lapse for those making more than that.)

WTF is he talking about? That just makes no sense whatsoever. None. Zero. One of the main justifications of the tax cuts back in 2001 was that the surplus was too large and we didn’t want the government having to reinvest or have too much money, so we would cut taxes so the government would have less money and give it back to “the people who earned it.” Now McConnell says that despite the fact that there is several trillion dollars less in the government cofferes because of the tax cuts, those tax cuts bring in more revenue. So why did the surplus not increase?

How do they get away with this shit? Any journalist who doesn’t laugh in the face of someone spewing this nonsense should go home, rip up their j-school diploma, and then do the honorable thing.

Another Steeler Incident

by John Cole|  May 11, 20105:33 pm| 20 Comments

This post is in: Sports, General Stupidity, Sweet Fancy Moses!

This is mildly amusing:

The mother of Pittsburgh Steelers star linebacker James Harrison pleaded no contest to a minor misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct following a brawl at a game-watching party in a community hall in Ohio.

Akron police said Mildred Harrison, 62, was one of three people cited after the fight at a Veterans of Foreign Wars post on Dec. 14. She was initially charged with assault in the case and a previous hearing had been continued until Tuesday.

Mama don’t take no mess. This made me laugh:

Police said it’s not clear why the party turned violent at about 10 p.m. during Cleveland’s 13-6 upset of division foe Pittsburgh.

Victims told police they were pushed, punched and struck with beer bottles.

Yeah. It’s a real mystery why a brawl may have broken out with Steelers fans after a Browns/Steelers game in a bar in Akron, Ohio.

Signs Point to Yes!

This post is in: Clown Shoes, Sweet Fancy Moses!

I’ve read this a couple times and I can’t tell if it is spoof or not, but here is the actual headline of a story at Christwire attempting to explain away the Rekers scandal:

You read it and tell me if it just a really bad attempt at excusing this away, or really good spoof. Obligatory link to the Onion’s classic “Why do all these homosexual people keep sucking my cock?”

TGIF

This post is in: Open Threads, Sweet Fancy Moses!

Been a really long week, but I got a lot done. I feel like dancing:

I probably shouldn’t be telling you all this, because I know what it is going to lead to, but last night I was sprawled out in the La-z-boy, fully extended, dog in my lap, watching Life on Discovery, and Tunch decided he wanted to be on my lap. He jumped up and went near my head and his weight almost tipped the entire damned chair. I over-compensated and Tunch and Lily went flying in different directions as the footrest came slamming down. Might be time for a diet for him after all.
