Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Jack Smith: “Why did you start campaigning in the middle of my investigation?!”

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

It’s easier to kill a dangerous animal than a man who just happens to have different thoughts/values than one’s own.

‘Museums aren’t America’s attic for its racist shit.’

“Why isn’t this Snickers bar only a nickel?”

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

Nothing says ‘pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

It’s not hopeless, and we’re not helpless.

Books are my comfort food!

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. don’t touch it.”

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

“That’s what the insurrection act is for!”

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

Chutkan laughs. Lauro sits back down.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

True-Life Tales of Terror

by Betty Cracker|  October 31, 20158:24 am| 132 Comments

This post is in: Because of wow., Domestic Politics, Lindsey Graham's Fee Fees, Midnight Confessions, Sweet Fancy Moses!, WTF?

Jezebel has their top 10 reader horror stories up here. Meh. I think we can do better, Juicers. Anyone got any true-life tales of terror to tell this Halloween? I’ll start us off, even though mine isn’t really all that scary. I’ve alluded to it briefly before, but here it is in detail:

My maternal grandmother is from the Carolinas. She was a schoolteacher when my sister and I were growing up, so she had summers off, and she’d take us on road trips to go camping, see historical sites (she was a history teacher) and visit relatives.

One of her cousins had inherited the old family manse, which was built in the 1820s (I think):

haunted house

Everyone assumed Cousin Howard was gay because he never married or had a girlfriend that anyone ever heard about, and he was a natty dresser with a flair for decorating. Back then, people made those kinds of assumptions.

(Now that I think back on it, Cousin Howard’s speech and mannerisms were somewhat reminiscent of Senator Lindsey Graham’s, another confirmed bachelor from the Carolinas. So maybe things haven’t changed so much after all, as far as assumptions go.)

I’m not the praying type (there’s the disbelief in gods thing), but if I were, I’d send one up for Mexico right about now:

hurricane patricia

Hurricane Patricia is forecast to make landfall pretty soon as the strongest hurricane in history. Here’s hoping people got the hell out of the way while they still could. As usual, the people who can least afford it will likely bear the brunt. They will need our help.

The above chicken was appreHENded by police in Oakland, CA at the Bay Bridge toll plaza. She is currently at an animal shelter:

Animal Services Director Rebecca Katz says people claiming ownership of the chicken, named Chip in a nod to the CHP, need to come to the facility with proof, such as previous photos of the famous foul. [sic]

On Thursday, Chip laid an egg. But the shelter will likely swap in a substitute egg for her to sit on, because it doesn’t want any more chickens.

I trust Animal Services realizes hens lay eggs regardless of whether or not they’ve ever clapped eyes on a rooster. We replaced our hens’ initial eggs with golf balls so they wouldn’t get the idea that eggs are edible. I don’t know if it was necessary, but they’ve always left the eggs to us.

Open Thread: Speaking of Wingnuts with ‘Manliness’ Issues…

by Anne Laurie|  July 29, 20156:30 pm| 131 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads, Post-racial America, Republican Stupidity, Assholes, Fools! Overton Window!, Sweet Fancy Moses!, Their Motto: Apocalypse Now

I’m glad my preferred Speaker-to-RWingers got around to an explainer on this sensitive topic, because I did not want to link to primary sources. Dave Weigel, in the Washington Post, on “‘Cuckservative’ — the conservative insult of the month“:

Late last week, a neologism was born. Twitter was the incubator. “Cuckservative,” a portmanteau of “conservative” and “cuckold” (i.e. a man whose wife has cheated on him) burned up Twitter as fans of Donald Trump’s politicking warred with the movement conservatives who opposed it.

RedState.com’s Erick Erickson, the Daily Caller’s Matt Lewis, and the team at the well-read conservative blog Ace of Spades were among the critics suddenly deluged with accusations of cuckservatism…

I’ll defer to Richard Spencer, president of the white nationalist National Policy Institute.

“#Cuckservative” is a full-scale revolt, by Identitarians and what I’ve called the ‘alt Right,’ against the Republican Party and conservative movement,” Spencer explained in an e-mail. “The ‘cuck’ slur is vulgar, yes, but then piercingly accurate. It is the cuckold who, whether knowingly or unknowingly, loses control of his future. This is an apt psychological portrait of white ‘conservatives,’ whose only identity is comprised of vague, abstract ‘values,’ and who are participating in the displacement of European Americans — their own children…

According to Spencer, “Trump is a major part of the ‘cuckservative’ phenomenon — but not because he himself is an Identitarian or traditionalist. His campaign is, in many ways, a backward-looking movement: ‘Let’s make America great again!’ Why Trump is attractive to Identitarians and the alt Right is: a) he is a tougher, superior man than ‘conservatives’ (which isn’t saying much), and b) he seems to grasp the demographic displacement of European-Americans on a visceral level. We see some hope there.”…

“Just look at them!” said Spencer. “Glenn Beck, Erik [sic] Erickson, Mike Huckabee. They’re mediocrities, or sub-mediocrities. They’re grinning, obese doofuses. No person with a deep soul — no person who wants to take part in a moment that’s idealistic, that’s going to change the world — would want to be a part of ‘conservatism.’ In a way, the current ‘cucks’ are the residue of the Bush era. They were the ‘conservative’ and ‘Religious Right’ allies of the neoconservatives. They’re still around, for no apparent reason.”…

Well, it’s always a fun time when Democracy’s enemies start turning on each other… Any odds on this neologism turning up during the Fox debates next week? And if so: “Serious contenders” debate, or the no-hoper “kiddy table” intro?

Pope Francis on the Death Merchants

This post is in: Gun nuts, Religion, War, Sweet Fancy Moses!, The Dirty F-ing Hippies Were Right

Hippie Pope tells it exactly like it is:

Pope Francis said Monday that “many powerful people don’t want peace because they live off war.” The Argentine pontiff made the hard-hitting comment in response to a question from one of the 7,000 children taking part in an audience held with the Peace Factory organisation. “This is serious,” Francis told the children. “Some powerful people make their living with the production of arms. It’s the industry of death.”

Wow — an actual Christian! How did this guy get through the papal conclave?

Bernie Sanders Hauls in $1.5 Million in 24 Hours

by Betty Cracker|  May 2, 20154:46 am| 227 Comments

This post is in: Election 2016, Open Threads, DC Press Corpse, Fools! Overton Window!, Sweet Fancy Moses!

Maybe there’s hope for the republic after all; via CNN:

WASHINGTON — Bernie Sanders’ nascent presidential campaign announced Friday that it had raised more than $1.5 million in its first 24 hours, a number that far outpaces what Republican presidential hopefuls posted on their first day… [M]ore than 100,000 people signed up for the campaign and 35,000 people donated money….

Bernie raised more than Marco Rubio, Rand Paul or Ted Cruz collected on their first day, which is all the more remarkable when you consider that the corporate media has spent the last two years acting as if that trio of lightweights and lunatics are serious presidential contenders while treating anyone to the left of Susan Collins as a commie crank.

The mister and I played a small part in Bernie’s surprisingly successful showing: We made our first political contribution of 2016 to Sanders’ campaign yesterday in the hope that his candidacy would drag Hillary Clinton a few centimeters leftward. Little did we guess we were droplets in a socialist cash tsunami!

Mid-Day Open Thread: The Gathering Shitstorm

I created the above graphic to express my perception of the overall mood of the Balloon Juice collective on the topic of Hillary Clinton as the 2016 Democratic Party nominee. We’re a big tent that includes HRC-haters, HRC-lovers and HRC-indifferents, but with few exceptions, we’re Democrats who will support our party’s nominee. I like that about us.
