Oh man, he just did his last concert with Black Sabbath a couple of weeks ago. In his hometown of Birmingham, no less. Wow. War Pigs will always be one of the greatest anti-war songs ever recorded.

My first concert sans adults. Saw him with Metallica opening at the Brendan Byrne Arena in East Rutherford, NJ. It was the evening before my 16th birthday in 1996. We took a limo – we were a group of four. Ozzy descended from the lighting grid on this throne. Great show. First and only time I saw both Ozzy and Metallica.

I got to see him once a few years ago at the Chicago Open Air right after Slayer.

There is a big generation gap here. My mother heard but didn’t necessarily like my music.
From the nineties on we olds didn’t even hear the kids’ music.
Of course I have heard of Black Sabbath, but I don’t think I ever heard any of their music. My stepkids will probably be bereft.

This song is from my very first CD album. Still gives me chills when I listen to it.

Didn’t Ozzy bite the head off a perfectly innocent bat?

Damn. Not that big a fan, but he had some bangers.

@geg6: I get the sense he was basically holding things together with that final reunion concert as a goal. Once past, then he could relax and let nature take its course. Which it apparently has.
I only saw him once, dueling with Cat Stevens (Peace Train / Crazy Train) at the Jon Stewart Rally in DC while I was on a long layover on my way to Haiti. Say what you want about it, that rally had great music. The Roots also performed. Fun day.
Liked some songs but overall not a fan; he came off in assorted shows, interviews etc as a decent person, and that’s a big win when someone was an object of- maybe adoration is too strong a word, but somewhere in that category.

I saw Megadeth in the early 90s. The singer, Dave Mustaine, was talking to the audience. He said that a mayor in New Mexico didn’t want them playing his town. Because he said Dave was the Devil. “But I can’t be the Devil!” he shouted “Ozzy is the Devil!” and the crowd roared in approval.
if this were the old days before the radio stations got taken over by playlist corporations, 98 Rock in Tampa would be playing Ozzy and Black Sabbath songs nonstop until the weekend. I miss that kind of spontaneity from the media.

@OGLiberal: If I had a million dollars, I would definitely have spent some of it on his farewell concert in Birmingham. Jay-zus, that lineup…
@Old School: in other stories Ozzy says he assumed it was rubber. What maniac brings a dead bat to a concert? If it was a stunt, getting an actual rabies shot is a hell if a commitment to the bit.
@Trivia Man: So he did bite the head off an innocent bat. He didn’t know it was an innocent live bat.Very very bad management. So I am okay in never listening to his music. Back where I started. There was a live innocent bat that died.
ETA And he didn’t care enough to care. Almost Trumpian in his indifference.

Fun Black Sabbath story time. In high school i had very mellow taste in music – think bluegrass, barry manilow, elton john for rocking out, terry jacks for love songs… hardly a rocker.
I won a prize, my choice out of 5 albums. In front of the school i was under a lot of pressure yo choose quickly. I only recognized one name, black sabbath*. And that was only because of a Cheech and Chong routine.** I chose that one and my life was changed forever.
*Heaven and Hell so not even Ozzy. But that quickly led me to Master of Reality and Volume 4. The other choices were ted nugent and 3 more i cant recall.
**Years later i told the story to Tommy Chong and he didnt remember the bit that changed my life. “Yeah! If you play it backwards you see god!” Nope, the bit i remembered was “Thats my black sabbath record! She was my old lady when she ripped it off!”

My oldest son absolutely lived to listen to heavy metal and passed that love on to my youngest son. They both listened to Ozzy (and others) non stop. I learned to like it or go deaf. The middle son went another direction. Jazz, show tunes, etc. The youngest is now a professional musician/writer/producer and still plays Ozzy’s stuff for fun.

Man, just saw this on local news. RIP, buddy! But it was 1970, I turned 12 that year, already a budding “Rock guitarist”, and for my birthday that year, my BFF gave me two LPs, Zeppelin’s and Sabbath’s first, and I gotta say that while Ozzie’s voice took a while to get used to, I immediately fell in love with “Geezer” Butler’s bass playing. I thought about switching to bass, until I got into Zeppelin, another band with an awesome bassist, and a kick a** guitarist, to boot! I could NOT get enough of them. (The singer and drummer were nothing to sneeze at, neither!)
But I saw Sabbath twice. First time was at the first California Jam, (16yo me is out there somewhere, rockin’ out to War Pigs!) The second time was at the Long Beach CA arena. We had great seats for that show, and the sound was spine tingling good! (Ruby Starr and Grey Ghost opened. They were a great live band!)
If I had to choose a favorite Black Sabbath album, it would be Master Of Reality, which contains one of my favorite tunes, Into The Void.
All that clumsily said, I hereby dedicate my next nip of the leaf to you, Mr. Oz. Rest, kind soul. :(
It wasn’t alive. Some asshole threw it at him. It was dead. If it was alive and thrown at him, it would have flown away before he could get it. I’ve had numerous run ins with bats. I know that would have happened. They are damn fast.

Check out War Pigs. I think it’s a truly great song, lyrics-wise. Ozzy’s bad reputation is undeserved. He was a pretty chill and kind man.
