Continuing our tour of Rotterdam Harbour…

You can see the De Witt behind the container ship.

What appears to be a cruise ship minus the amusement park on top.

The New York Hotel, formerly the offices of the Holland America Line, from which my mother and her family (and later her cousins and their parents) departed for points west.
Also where would have lunch later.

The New York Hotel in its current context.

The buildings look like corrugated shipping containers!
sab
Are those offices or apartments?

Really struck by the colors of sea and sky in the top photo.
I love the two “contexts” of the New York Hotel, its clock towers dwarfing the white tents along the water’s edge — and then barely noticeable at the feet of the modern buildings behind it. With your family history, it must have been thrilling to eat there!
So much unusual architecture!

Rotterdam Harbor is endlessly fascinating.
And the New York Hotel is a real treat: we stayed there a few years ago. The atmosphere of the public spaces is electric – still reminiscent of the days of the great ocean liners. Food at the restaurant was excellent, with harbor views.
Our room had a closet that had been converted from an old walk-in safe.
And a German singing group was also there, and practiced in the little park outside the hotel.

I’m really enjoying this. Thanks.

Gorgeous blues & green steel skies and water. Really caught the hugeness of the buildings and ships, but still big skies.

Really interesting pictures. I have to admit, I’d be a bit nervous about being in or close to one of those very tall buildings. But I appreciate the effect from a distance.
Also appreciating the commentary.

I’m intrigued by the three masted ship in picture #3 among all the other larger, more utilitarian ones.
Captain C
@sab: I’m not sure; my guess would be some combination thereof. Perhaps a hotel or two also.
Captain C
@stinger: Thanks! It was thrilling; it was also where we had a slideshow of family history that was quite interesting.
Captain C
@Baud: I wonder if that was intentional.
Captain C
@RU12: I’ll keep that in mind if I ever stay in Rotterdam :^)
Captain C
@MCat: You’re welcome! There’s many more sets to come.
Captain C
@Torrey: Thanks!
Captain C
@Tenar Arha: Thanks! That was one of the intriguing things about the harbor, the various scales and sizes of things that were all in the same place.
Captain C
@cope: I’d love to know more about it, myself. I like all the contrasts in this harbor–small vs. big vs. bigger, modern vs. older…
Torrey
I keep going back to the next-to-last one with the cables laid out precisely against what appears to be the chaotic organization (oxymoron?) of the clouds and the various gray and blue-gray hues. Intriguing and just lovely.

Wikipedia says the ship in pic #4 is the former Holland America liner SS Rotterdam, launched in 1958. It was retired from transatlantic service in 1968 and sailed as a cruise ship with Holland America and then Premier until 2000. In 2010 the restored Rotterdam opened to the public as a combination hotel/museum ship. It’s now owned by the same hotel company that runs the Hotel New York.

@ljdramone: Neat! Thanks for the info.
Captain C
@Torrey: Thanks!
