A sampling of the news from my RSS reader this morning.
I’m not sure I can bear to read any of them, but I am loving the titles.
What’s everyone up to on Labor Day?
I have hours of work to do this morning, then some friends are coming over this afternoon to play cards and drink sour cherry mojitos.
Betty Cracker posted this image last week, and I love it so much. Perfection.
Open thread, obviously.

Consider this an official request that the above Melania photo (I make grave for husband now) be posted daily.
Hourly if Sinclair stations start playing Swan Lake.
Even if he croaketh not over the next 3 months, the repetition of the photo will be a calming reminder that the pig’s one-way ticket to hell is about to be scanned and that PeeWee German is about to be in a scorpion fight inside a small glass cube.

I guess we should all reread or rewatch King Lear, because it seems like we’re going to live through it. The old king, slowly losing his grip on reality and physically fading towards death, watches as the children and subordinates that he thought loved and or obeyed him all turned their backs as he declined, ruining his works in their infighting.
No Cordelia in this story, though. His children are all Goneril.

This is the last day of the Japanese Festival at the Missouri Botanical Gardens, St Louis.

I think that this new weight loss plan is really coming together…. you see, I’m finally going to do the exercise thingy, it’s called dancing on their graves and now that Congressman Dike has bought it, I can begin (or I can even use Mr. Dobson’s death from last week), each time I outlast one of these heinous fucks, I will perform at least one (perhaps as much as an entire set) musical length rendition of fat white guy dancing that will allow me to purge my inner self of those terrible demons of feeling joy that there is one less miserable bastard around. If they keep dropping off this mortal coil at this rate, I will be on track to have consumed at least 250 more calories than I would have otherwise on a weekly basis.
The fun thing is, old asshole conservatives are in generous supply, and this is environmentally safe (excepting those observing said dancing). Perhaps there’s a way to harness this energy like they did with the scream machine in Monsters Inc. (which is a pretty good name for the GOP now that I think about it).

A few minutes ago, at dawn, multiple gun shots were heard all around us. It took me a moment to figure it out. Oh yeah, it’s September 1st, the first day of dove hunting season. Poor doves. ☹️

WaterGirl, that’s a tough way to start the day. I’m glad I only get two of the ones you get (the first two). Oh, and Timothy Snyder, who was somewhat positive today.

I would say there is no way that is what Melania is doing with the shovel, but it is the happiest I have ever seen her, so maybe.

I’m reading a book called Flashlight by Susan Choi, and feeling a little amazed and ashamed I am not already familiar with her work.
Otherwise recovering from yet another strenuous 9 mile hike on Saturday in the Shenandoah NP in preparation for a hike in the Balkans at the end of September.
Also trying to help my husband navigate post-op care for his older brother after heart surgery, made more complicated by COPD and warring personalities of other family members.
So haven’t been keeping up. Seems like generally good news that Joni Ernst won’t be running again. And they finally admitted Trump has chronic venous insuffiency, which is what my mother had. It’s a battle between staving off blood clots without killing with blood thinners, attended by seriously low energy.
Hope everyone has a great day.

Took the doggo for a nice walk, went for a short but very nice run, and will be trying a new type of mobility workout a little bit later. I am planning to spend most of the rest of the day lounging. Spawn the Youngest took a spill on her scooter yesterday, and got a bit scraped up. She was very upset about it, and she woke up in the middle of the night and came into our bed. I swear to FSM, I don’t know how small people can take up so much space. She slept the rest of the night basically with her knees in my back, pushing me off the bed. I may need a nap.

I’ll be working on the timeline and scene structure in my novel for the next few days in preparation for my scheduled session with my coach on Thursday. Laborious day here.
Taking a quick drive to Lowe’s for tiki torches and other festival camping needs—which will also be a test of whether my radiator died last night.
Then, providing the radiation is not having no trouble, I’m test packing the vehicle. Got a large tub of camping stuff, an acoustic guitar, a folding table, an upright bass, and a duffel bag of bedding to pack.
Then, again presuming no radiator trouble, I go across town to pick up earbuds I left at practice.
Then, because I still have to get printed and take a TB test I before I start at my new school, I’m calling the parents of naughty children and pretending to lesson plan.

I lived most of my life in extreme South Texas near the border. It was a dove hunting Mecca. People traveled many miles to hunt doves during the season, especially white winged doves. Many of them were vacation hunters and also like to drink during hunts. The birds were greatly aided by their lack of ability and boozy aim. They were more in danger from each other than the doves were.

If asked, I’m sure our immigrant First Lady would say it was all worth it. But then, it’s a damaged person who makes this kind of bargain.
In the course of a multi-state chaotic childhood, I grew up with wide swings in our financial state. Public school, but also private school. Needing my paychecks from a restaurant job I was too young to legally have, flipped to big house and country club membership. (I never went. I knew these kids were jerks from school.) And then, back again :)
I can tell you that being miserable in deluxe surroundings is not better. It can make you feel worse.
Because here you are, dressed from the high end department stores, eating better food in more environmental comfort, but no more confident and happy. Still struggling to manage, only now the hedges to jump that are demanded of you are much higher.
More difficult to clear.
But it taught me a valuable lesson. Sobbing on a fancy velour couch by a big window is just the same as sobbing in the shower stall I can never make look clean. Life is not about the quality of your stuff.
It’s about ourselves having the Right Stuff.

I am starting week three of my extended foray in Kansas finalizing long term care arrangements for my 91 year old mother. We already have daytime caregivers in place, so I try and entertain myself during the day so the caregivers don’t complain about the creepy old man hanging around the house. At this point, I believe I have exhausted all of the tourist possibilities of south central Kansas. I am not from here, btw.
I am leaching off of the ..um… beneficence of the Koch Brothers, who sponsored the pool, YMCA and nature center that I inhabit for free since my Mom lives two miles from their Evil Headquarters. I make it a point to spit on something whenever I walk past their HQ. If I had to be here much longer, I’d swap out one of the letters in “spit..”
Kansans are pleasant and friendly and are quick to helpfully let me know exactly what is wrong with California. When I get home, I’ll be sure and let my friends and family know how miserable they must be.
If you’re traveling down I-35 through Kansas on your way to someplace worse (Oklahoma), I highly recommend the Tallgrass Prairie Nature Preserve. It checks all the Kansas boxes – prairie grass, wildflowers, bison, ominous skies that threaten a tornado.
I’m going home on Saturday. Hope no one finds it odd when I kiss the tarmac at LAX in pure unmitigated joy.

Wasting supporter’s ad dollars on pre-purchased blocks that are now completely wasted money, adding fuel to the resentment fire that without doubt burns to various degrees in the small black hearts of Iowa Republicans and perhaps Republicans at large.
Keeping that waste of space and salary in front of more Iowans to fan the flames of this burnout.
The two downsides? One, we won’t get the satisfaction of beating the pantsuit off of her come election time. Rode the moto to the coast, hoping to see some gray whales. No luck so far, but a good excuse for a ride.

I just finished the Pevear translation of the Three Musketeers! Totally agree about the introduction. Count of Monte Cristo is my favorite Dumas by far though.

@Almost Retired: There are tourist opportunities in south central Kansas?

@WereBear: You used to be required to have a “membership” at a bar in order to drink alcohol in Kansas. I think they finally did away with that requirement.

@eclare: Ran is an awesome movie. The motivations are clearer than in King Lear.

@Almost Retired:
My mother grew up just outside of Arkansas City (and woe betide anyone who pronounces it “Arkansaw“) and I had family in Cowley County until my aunt died in 2018. We celebrated every Christmas out there when I was growing up, and went out at other times as well, so I’ve flown in and out of Wichita more times than I can recall.
I’m fond of that part of Kansas, and I miss the places that were once part of my life that are now inhabited by strangers. But there’s no way I’d want to live out there, and completely understand how you feel.

@lowtechcyclist: today I went to an Indian casino in Oklahoma just over the border from Arkansas City. AC has a quite vibrant downtown that makes the place feel much larger than it is!

@dmsilev: If only they were as good as Goneril!
