Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

“But what about the lurkers?”

Tick tock motherfuckers!

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

You passed on an opportunity to be offended? What are you even doing here?

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson is the bland and smiling face of evil.

’Where will you hide, Roberts, the laws all being flat?’

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

If you’re gonna whine, it’s time to resign!

Do we throw up our hands or do we roll up our sleeves? (hint, door #2)

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

Find someone who loves you the way trump and maga love traitors.

When you’re in more danger from the IDF than from Russian shelling, that’s really bad.

If you thought you’d already seen people saying the stupidest things possible on the internet, prepare yourselves.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

How stupid are these people?

Reminder: Chris Rufo was directly responsible for giving ‘Libs of TikTok’ a national platform — which led to credible death threats against many individuals, and more than one hospital. But now *his* pasty white arse is being threatened, oh no!!!

Sucks when the real threats aren't who you thought they were, huh?

The Telegraph pulls its prior reporting on Tyler Robinson and replaces it with a highly flattering portrait of an all-American Mormon boy… they're now reportedly preparing a story saying that Charlie Kirk died as a victim of he Groyper Wars, and that Robinson was a Nick Fuentes adherent.

Here we go. Tyler no longer Groyper adjacent. Leaked Police interview with his family, Tyler Robinson hated Charlie Kirk because Kirk wasn't conservative enough+ Robinson admired/followed neo-Nazi Nick Fuentes. — Spoonamore (@spoonamore.bsky.social) September 12, 2025 at 3:34 PM

This is either incredibly stupid or incredibly dishonest. Given this is Dinesh D'Souza, I'm guessing both.
Tyler Robinson only did one semester at Utah, hardly a lib enclave. He lasted longer at Dixie Technical College. And, as we all know, schools with the name "Dixie" are notorious for wokeness.

that JC Cantwell BlueSky thread really seemed to make a lot of sense to me, it’s like a crime family internal squabble, where the Capo (Trump) doesn’t give a shit as long as he gets his cut and these peeps know their place.  everyone else is protecting turf, muscling into someone else’s turf or “creating opportunities”, be they of political power or financial benefit or both.

But then I come from a religious tradition that eschews poselyticzing and has historically been the target of those who would convert us. So I have a low tolerance for it.

That the governor would have preferred the shooter to be from anywhere except Utah — even from an adjacent state — seems to me to be a kind of narcissism, he’s saying Utahians are better than everyone else, followed by Oops, my bad. Seems to me to be taking the idea of team spirit too far.

Saw my first salt truck in Chicago tonight, with some Chi cops hanging around it. We knew they were cops because they weren’t wearing masks.  The Uber driver said he thought only gang members should wear masks, which seemed to be a reasonable point.

Apologies if my “wise up” comment came across as too snarky. During his first term, Cox portrayed himself as a moderate. After getting re-elected, he has become more MAGA-friendly. When his second term ends, or if there is an opening before then, you can bet he will run for the U.S. Senate. My guess is that the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve think of him as their golden boy, and the best chance for finally getting a Mormon in the Oval Office.

i know you can chalk up an air-dropped bomb, an artillery shell, tube or tank cannon-

why wouldn’t you police them all up and leave your sniper nest pristine?

      *sigh*

I don’t understand why this is such a big news story three days after his murder. He wasn’t some brilliant politician or even much of a celebrity. It’s just rich white media owners enforcing the fact that nothing but white lives matter & thus we should build monuments & have a national day of mourning for an enforcer of white supremacy. Nope. I’m done. He’s dead. I feel for the trauma his kids* have had to go through over seeing their father gunned down. But I’m tired of being forced to celebrate a life that was dedicated to sowing divisions into the fabric of our nation that has ALWAYS been diverse since its founding. I’m moving on. We have better shit to focus on.

@NotMax: at other campuses he gets ignored. For instance when he came to the University of Florida last time, which is NOT especially liberal except in comparison to the old conservative fantasy politicians running the state, the students just kept passing him and rushing to class and getting their business done. No protests, very tiny audience. The enrollment is over 50,000 and I didn’t see 100 paying attention. I thought it was a good thing. He needs both attention and protestors. Boredom could kill the momentum.

I have NEVER heard of anyone engraving she’ll casings with messages before. Seems like it would be destroyed by being fired.

Now I did read something that said the supposed trans message was actually a foreign companies manufacturing abbreviation with the ammunition ID and it was a well know manufacturer. That made more sense then anything else, but it didn’t get confirmed and the trans accusations seem to have been dropped and almost forgotten.

but also sense to me doesn’t mean much. I am not knowledgeable about guns. I just know the engraved message sounds silly.

I don’t understand why this is such a big news story three days after his murder. He wasn’t some brilliant politician or even much of a celebrity.

Because of inertia. The Trump White House and the entire Maga Party movement decided to make this shitbird’s assassination the basis of a nationwide crackdown on Democrats, up to and including mass firings and visa denials for not joining in the hagiography for their martyr. The mainstream media were with them all the way in painting the dead racist as the innocent victim of Leftist terrorism, and it was looking like you were only one sketchy ‘killed while resisting arrest’ announcement about a conveniently Gay, black, leftwing patsy from the White House lawn away from something very bad indeed starting to happen.

Now the killer has been revealed as a straight white mug of Gamergate cliches with a foamy far-right radicalisation topping, the half of the country that were hoping to ride this flaming ball of bullshit down the hill to Pogromville are scrambling to explain away how the BIGGEST STORY IN THE WORLD is really just a sad domestic tragedy where no one is really to blame except college professors.

Personally, I’d like to see a unified effort across to board from every non-Maga Party voice in the country demanding that everyone from Trump on down immediately apologises to the tens of millions of Americans they were painting as feral murderers because The Right can’t and won’t police their own extremists.

There won’t be an apology, but it would be instructive for the ‘mushy middle’ to see the Maga Party refuse to apologise to America for what they said about everyone in it who isn’t them.

@strange visitor (from another planet): I’ve only seen it twice, both times in fiction:

One, in The Man With The Golden Gun, involved a bullet (a golden bullet, mind you) with “007” carved on it, to serve as a message, the traditional “bullet with your name on it”.

The other, in Blackadder Goes Forth, has Captain Blackadder’s aide, Baldrick, carrying around a bullet with “Baldrick” scratched onto it. Baldrick’s logic is that if there’s a bullet with your name on it, and you’re carrying that bullet, then it can’t be fired at you (Blackadder counters that the threat doesn’t come from the bullet with your name on it, but rather all the ones flying around addressed to “Occupant” or “To Whom It May Concern”).

@JoyceH: I’m not sure the Groypers are MAGA. I’ve run into that world on social media on and off since January, and read some of Nick Fuentes’ posting. Fuentes broke with Trump within weeks of his inauguration. He claims that Trump and his administration  have been captured by corporate interests and the “Globalists,” and have betrayed the “America First” movement.

And when talking about the “Globalists,” the Groypers do not mince words; they’ll freely and proundly admit they’re talking about the Jews. They are very explicitely anti-Semitic, as is Fuentes. Anti-Semitism is the keystone of their entire racist ideology.

These people are not hard to find on Twitter. Fuentes posts on that platform mainly to announce his podcasts, but other Groypers and Groyper-adjacent people post there prolifically.

I looked today and and saw Groypers attribute Charlie Kirk’s assassination to Israel; they claim that while Kirk had been more or less pro-Israel in the past, he was beginning to break with that nation and had to be eliminated for that reason. It won’t matter that Tyler Robinson’s biography might contradict that narrative, because the narrative comes first and facts will be made to fit it.

There’s a window – small, and shrinking as quickly as the Maga Party and the MSM can manage it – for the Democrats to exploit this for good ends. Lay it out every time there’s a camera, blast it all over social media.

“After the onslaught of lies and innuendo his Administration have wielded since the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the President owes it to all Americans to stand up here where we can all see him and offer a heartfelt and unconditional apology to us all for his conduct, his rhetoric, and his partisan eagerness to point fingers at the tens of millions of Americans he labels as his enemies and blame them, without so much as a shred of collaborating evidence, for the violence and evil intent fostered by the online Right and its well-funded organs of radicalisation and division. This is one country, indivisible, and for once in his life Donald Trump needs to show this country that he knows what that means.”

Stuff like that, over and over and over again.

They will. But fuck ‘em and what they want. The Maga Party have been screaming for blood for days, stand up and make one simple demand, that Donald Trump stand in front of a podium and apologise to the country for his ugly words.

No ‘discussing the issues’, no ‘calming the waters’. Tell them that the President owes the country an apology right the fuck now and demand it every time they speak.

Democrats would be happy to start fixing the country’s problems, but you first, Donald.

Great obituary in The Nation, by Elizabeth Spiers: thenation.com/article/politics/charlie-kirk-assassination-maga/

That is a great editorial. I hope everyone reads it and sends to around.

@Tony Jay: Agreed. Calling out Cheeto for jumping to cast blame, making unsubstantiated accusations will maybe help people who aren’t paying attention connect the dots to the perpetrators. Plus Dumpf will not resist responding with some even stupider comments. Plus it’s the truth! All this unfair baseless maligning of liberals shouldn’t go unchecked.

      @Ohio Mom:

To be fair, the skeet is a little misleading. He was hoping the perp wasn’t from Utah …

Actually, I think that makes it worse. It means that Gov. Cox attributes all the hatred and negative stereotypes he associates with immigrants equally to blue-staters as well.

Not that this makes it any better, talk about provincialism and chauvinism.

      Yep. Exactly.

@SFAW:“I’m sorry, but Dr X and Nurse Y are off on the floor at the moment. How can I help you?”

I will note in my recent hospital stay a surprising number of nurses were flirting with me. I supposed this is to be expected the way they work them with 12 hour shifts.

So if the facts are now adding up that this kid was not liberal but in fact even further right than Kirk, his bullet casing markups make even more sense.

Most are associated with far-right gamers and Groypers, but one fake “anti-fascist” one thrown in for good measure in hope of flaming an even bigger culture war against both his enemies.
