lolsob — Kamala Harris with a couple callbacks to her infamous "nothing comes to mind" answer during her The View appearance just before the election

===

Kamala Harris on The View on election night: "That night — I grieved in a way that I have not since my mother died. The pain was not at all about losing a race. I knew what it was going to mean for the country … all I could say over and over was 'my God, my God, my God.' It was very difficult."

Kamala Harris: "We also need to remember those 107 days around some other stuff that he said — mass deportations, that he would weaponize the DOJ against his political enemies, that he would silence critics. And he has done that consistently."

But nooooo…

Don't think I've ever felt this embarrassed to be an American. There's shame and anger too. But mostly embarrassment. We're the laughingstock of the developed world. And we should be.

(Yes, the entire UN speech was an embarrassment to all thinking people… but those aren’t the ones Trump was talking for. The clips designed to go viral on Reichtwing media will show a proud leader speaking of his many triumphs, and the fact that every word is a lie and every promise an empty threat will be overlooked by his cultists.)

This is a paragraph from the opinion piece by Josh Hammer, a supposedly sane conservative:
The body of my friend Charlie Kirk, who was tragically assassinated last week during a campus event in Utah by a leftist transgender-adjacent “furry” fetishist, had barely returned home to Arizona before some grifters on the ostensible “Right” started trying to capitalize on his memory. Instead of focusing on the metastasizing evil of a distinctly leftist political violence or the fact that transgenderism had yet again found itself implicated in a horrific shooting.

WHAT the fuck is transgender-adjacent?  Apparently anybody knowing a transgender person who commits a violent act must have been influenced by the violent tendencies of transgender people.  I appreciate the fact that Mr. Hammer backs his statements up with data showing how prevalent violence is among transgender people.

BTEW, this is from the Newsweek website.

      This!

Yes, AL.  That was my sad conclusion when earlier today I tried to find online reactions to the Trump UN speech today.  I used “Trump UN speech embarrassment” as a search and what popped up on Google was article after commentary after opinion piece  from 2018!

So yeah, he’s done this before.  The UN delegates know this and were not surprised today.  We are not surprised.  No one is surprised.  But the right wing media will sane wash it for their viewers.

It turned out that I was doing that search too soon and now there are pages of reviews of the speech today. But it was a kick in the pants to realize that it was just a repeat of his previous performance.

But just because we’ve seen this before shouldn’t stop us from continuing to push the message that his embarrassing speech is hurting our nation in the eyes of other countries and world leaders.

And also to, that he’s a narcissistic idiot.

Now, the accusation is of terrorism rather than pedophilia, but it’s the same kind of thing.

What’s particularly embarrassing about Trump is the fact that roughly half of the Americans who bothered to vote in three separate elections — 2016, 2020 and 2024 — chose to vote for Trump.  He is an embarrassment and the people who voted for him are an embarrassment.

I could so relate when Kamala Harris compared her grief on election night to what she felt when she lost her mom. My sister and I were heartbroken in November 2016, and we agreed we felt a similar desolation when we’d lost our mom two years prior.

We were disappointed and disgusted with the 2024 outcome, of course. But it wasn’t as surprising. We know now.

Yeppers. And that’s really all we need to say to low-info people.

But if they are vaguely aware that they supposedly need Dem votes:
we tell them, sure, there’s a Senate rule that says they need 60 votes to keep the government open. But they only need 50+JD to ditch that rule. Hell, with 50 votes + JD, they can toss the entire Senate rulebook in the wastebasket. It’s not like they have any problem with running right through rules that stand in their way.

So: they really don’t need a single Dem vote to keep the government open. They have total control. It’s all on them.

The rationale is kinda bizarre. From your link:

“By preventing Iranian regime officials from exploiting diplomatic travel to the UN as a means to obtain goods unavailable to the Iranian public, we are sending a clear message: When the United States says it stands with the people of Iran, we mean it,” he continued.

I’m sure the Iranian people suffering from our sanctions will totally take our side upon hearing about this.  I mean, if this was the actual rationale, the right approach would be to let the diplomats come home with all sorts of goodies, and make sure the Iranian people knew about it. And then the diplomats would get lynched.

Nah, this is just hassling their diplomats for the sake of hassling their diplomats.

      Obligatory … Kwintessential.co.uk:

Nikita Khruschchev was notorious for his use of old Russian sayings – and cursed for it by his interpreters.

During a meeting at the United Nations, Khruschchev once said:

“As we say in Russia, when the cow gives bad milk
the farmer’s wife beats the haystack with a long broom.”

This had to be translated from Russian into English, and then the English translation was used by the other interpreters working that day to translate the message into the other languages spoken by the other leaders present in the meeting.

Sounds familiar to a game of Chinese whispers, doesn’t it?

Well, in fact, this is more or less what the translation of the saying turned into. The Russian-English interpreter suspected that Khruschchev implied that shady things were happening. As he was an avid Shakespeare fan, he translated the phrase with “There is something rotten in the state of Denmark.” The English-Danish interpreter (hungover, apparently), translated this sentence as “And moreover, Denmark is a rotten state.” This made the Danish ambassador jump up from his chair. In disagreement, he shouted: “I protest at this wanton slur upon my country.”

      Sounding like a comedy now?

The General Secretary, who had heard the phrase in yet another language, had no idea what the Danish ambassador was talking about. Neither did Kruschchev. He protested: “But I never even mentioned Denmark.” Eventually, the whole situation was sorted out: the two interpreters, however, were sent on extended leave.

      Language is weird.

      Best wishes,
      Scott.

      Talk about bad timing.

Disney is raising the price of Disney Plus subscriptions again as part of its mission to squeeze profits from its streaming service.

The new prices will go into effect on October 21st. The standalone plan with ads will increase by $2 to $11.99 per month, while the no-ads Disney Plus Premium plan will increase by $3 to $18.99 per month (with the annual subscription going up by $30 to $189.99 per year). Various bundles are getting price increases, too… Source

I think Trump is now at the point where he’s cashing checks he can’t afford. If that shutdown happens, he will own it. Dems should negotiate in good faith with the understanding that if they don’t get what they want then they need to let it happen.

The thing with our party is that we understand the bigger picture and that a lot of harm would happen if we don’t keep the govt open. The thing is, the GOP Is already causing harm in a manner that is widespread. Plus, this man will absolutely ignore any deal, any use of money.

Since his party and the SCOTUS are quite willing to give him what he wants then he, his party, and his voting supporters absolutely deserves this pain and so do his supporters even if it is at our expense. His supporters are already hurting – amount of small businesses that will close.

I expect his supporters to turn on him at this point and thats when he will turn on them.

@kindness: Historically, at least, when shutdowns have happened enough of the public has blamed them on the party in power (i.e. Republicans since Democrats never do this).  Of course it’s not certain that would always be the case.  But it’s not automatically true that Democrats would be blamed.  Whether it hurts Republicans in midterms does seem to depend on the proximity in time.  However, it’s not obvious it hurts Democrats.

      I heard a bit of C-SPAN – Schumer’s news conference today in Brooklyn (8:25):

      A statement, then some Q&A:

      […]

HIS STAFF — NO. WE HEARD — SOME PEOPLE REPORTED THAT THE LEADERS THUNE AND JOHNSON WANTED HIM TO PULL OUT BECAUSE THEY WERE AFRAID OF WHAT HE MIGHT DO. BUT IT’S NOT UP TO THEM, IT’S UP TO TRUMP. WE ASKED FOR TWO MONTHS TO SIT DOWN WITH THUNE AND JOHNSON. THEY DIDN’T ANSWER. YOU KNOW WHAT WE HEARD FROM THEM? CRICKETS. AND THEN WE FOUND OUT WHY, TRUMP SAID DON’T BOTHER WITH DEMOCRATS. SO WE SENT A LETTER, JUST TO GIVE YOU THE HISTORY, SPEAKER JEFFRIES AND I, TO COME TO NEGOTIATE WITH US. IT WAS A GOOD SIGN THAT ON TUESDAY THEY SAID YES, SET UP THAT MEETING FOR THURSDAY AT 3:00. I WAS ALSO TO GO DOWN — I WAS ALL SET TO GO DOWN TO WASHINGTON FOR THIS MORNING IN IRAN THAT WENT ON FOR 10 MINUTES ABOUT NOTHING, HE PULLED OUT — IN A RANT THAT WENT ON FOR 10 MINUTES ABOUT NOTHING, HE PULLED OUT.

IF YOU WILL — TWO THINGS. IF YOU ASK THE AMERICAN PEOPLE THE NUMBER ONE CONCERN, IT IS HEALTH CARE. BUT NUMBER TWO, IT IS THE REPUBLICANS WHO DID SUCH HUGE DAMAGE IN THE BBB. NOT A SINGLE DEMOCRAT VOTED FOR THE BBB BECAUSE IT’S SO SLASHED HEALTH CARE. IT DID NOT RENEW THE ACA. IT SMASHED MEDICAL RESEARCH. SO THERE ARE MANY ISSUES AGAINST TRUMP, AND THAT IS WHY HE HAS BECOME UNPOPULAR, BUT THIS IS FOCUSED ON THE BUDGET AND WHAT THEY JUST DID.

U.S. — WE DON’T WANT TO SHUT DOWN THE GOVERNMENT. IT IS TRUMP WHO IS DOING IT, SO ASK HIM. I WAS READY TO GO DOWN TO WASHINGTON AND MEET WITH HIM. THANK YOU, EVERYBODY. HAPPY NEW YORK TO THE — HAPPY NEW YEAR TO THOSE WHO MIGHT BE — TO EVERYBODY. I PRAY FOR EVERYBODY IN SYNAGOGUE THIS MORNING.

Chuck is good at showing that 47 doesn’t actually know how to do politics. It’s not “strength” to post a deranged bloot and pull out of a negotiation meeting that you scheduled 2 days before. It’s petulance.

      We’ll see what happens.

      Strength, everyone.

Insiders Spill Embarrassing Truth About Trump’s UN Pratfalls

First, the escalator stopped immediately after Trump and his wife, Melania, stepped onto it ahead of his major speech.

Video showed the president, 79, looking around before he and the First Lady started to walk up the unmoving escalator.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt posted a tweet later, demanding an investigation into whether someone had intentionally halted the escalator.

But according to someone familiar with the situation, someone in the president’s own entourage accidentally tripped the emergency stop.

      . . .

As Trump took the podium to speak, he complained that the teleprompter was not working. Instead, he had to read the printed copy of his speech.

However, a person with knowledge of the situation revealed that delegations are allowed to bring their own laptops and teleprompter operators, and the UN was not running it for Trump’s speech.

The source said that the White House had its own laptop, and UN technicians were not in the booth for the president’s address.

Ultimately, the entire situation may have happened because the president’s team needed more time to set up. It was suggested that they did not arrive with enough time to make sure their equipment was plugged in and ready to go.

While the president had his own operator to run the teleprompter and laptop to run his speech, what was less clear was whether the White House had also swapped out the actual teleprompters, as some delegations do.

Trump clearly does not know how things work.

Which is why you keep one hand on the handrail of an escalator.

Because the speed of the rail is set to move slightly faster than that of the stairs, doing so extends your arm enough to act as a brake in case of a sudden stop, keeping one from being pitched forward.

FFOTUS trying to improve job numbers?

Hundreds of federal employees who lost their jobs in Elon Musk’s cost-cutting blitz are being asked to return to work.

The General Services Administration has given the employees — who managed government workspaces — until the end of the week to accept or decline reinstatement, according to an internal memo obtained by The Associated Press. Those who accept must report for duty on Oct. 6 after what amounts to a seven-month paid vacation, during which time the GSA in some cases racked up high costs — passed along to taxpayers — to stay in dozens of properties whose leases it had slated for termination or were allowed to expire.

“Ultimately, the outcome was the agency was left broken and understaffed,” said Chad Becker, a former GSA real estate official. “They didn’t have the people they needed to carry out basic functions.”
