Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

If a good thing happens for a bad reason, it’s still a good thing.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

Relentless negativity is not a sign that you are more realistic.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Democracy is not a spectator sport.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

Roe is not about choice. It is about freedom.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

This is the kind of language all of our elected officials should be using.

Despite refusing to coordinate with the state or city, we’re monitoring the ongoing federal deployments that are instilling fear in our communities.

Americans have a right to peaceful assembly and to make their voices heard. Even if the Trump admin won’t follow the law, we will.

— Governor JB Pritzker (@govpritzker.illinois.gov) September 20, 2025 at 2:09 PM

.

Unlike Donald Trump, most Americans believe in the ideals on which our nation was founded.

Now is the time to stand up for those noble ideals.

Be loud — for America.

As If ICE Couldn’t Get Any Worse, But Here We Are

Welcome to Friday.

Wait, How Exactly Did ICE Manage to “Lose” More Than 1,000 Alligator Alcatraz Detainees?

from the inestimable Charlie Pierce at Esquire   (paywalled)

It appears that the agency is just as incompetent as it is cruel.

Well, mercy me. The well-oiled machinery of the Stephen Miller Roundup seems to have slipped another gear. From the Miami Herald:

As of the end of August, the whereabouts of two-thirds of more than 1,800 men detained at Alligator Alcatraz during the month of July could not be determined by the Miami Herald. The Herald had obtained the names from two detainee rosters. Around 800 detainees showed no record on ICE’s online database. More than 450 listed no location and only instructed the user to “Call ICE for details”—a vague notation that attorneys said could mean that a detainee is still being processed, in the middle of a transfer between two sites or about to be deported.

Excuse me?

They had these people isolated in a prison camp in the middle of the damn Everglades and, somehow, they managed to lose them in transit to God knows where? These people simply don’t care enough to run a policy that isn’t cruel and stupid. Being cruel and competent is beyond them. Being benign and stupid is beyond them. Their only talent is being cruel and stupid.

Some Alligator Alcatraz detainees who couldn’t be located in the ICE database might have been deported—even though the internal data obtained by the Herald show the vast majority of detainees didn’t have final orders of removal from a judge before entering the facility. Some of those deportations occurred as a result of detainees deciding to abandon their ongoing immigration cases to put an end to their detention at the facility and its harsh conditions, which included being held in chain-link cages in tents with little protection from the elements. “It became a game of chicken to see who’s going to blink first, to see if the client’s going to say ‘I don’t want to be detained in these conditions just send me back,’ ” said Miami immigration attorney Alex Solomiany.

Heads they win, tails they’re lost.

I honestly don’t know what’s worse to think about.  1,000 human beings lost?  1,000 human beings disappeared?  1,000 shipped off to a black site somewhere?

This is why we organize, donate, and speak up.  Right?

JB Pritzker – Again! – Says What Needs to be Said, Does What Needs to be Done

JB Pritzker Is An Inspiration

Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker has called for boycotts and protests against broadcast outlets that are tied to Wednesday’s decision by the Walt Disney Co. and its ABC network to indefinitely suspend comedian Jimmy Kimmel’s nightly talk show, including against WGN’s television and radio stations and ABC-7 in Chicago.

.

A free and democratic society cannot silence comedians because the President doesn’t like what they say.

This is an attack on free speech and cannot be allowed to stand.

All elected officials need to speak up and push back on this undemocratic act.

— Governor JB Pritzker (@govpritzker.illinois.gov) September 17, 2025 at 6:22 PM

.

This is the playbook, folks.

If you’re not paying attention now and doing something about it, then you’re going to have to sit down the rest of your life because democracy is being taken away.

Do not be quiet in this moment.

— Governor JB Pritzker (@govpritzker.illinois.gov) September 18, 2025 at 11:12 AM

.

What’s at stake here is free speech.

Across the board, we’ve seen the Trump administration use the power of government to go after anybody who’s criticized them — and in this case, Jimmy Kimmel.

We need to all stand up and speak out.

.

I also love this from Chris Murphy.

I thought it was 2025, but it’s apparently 1984

We all know that people are losing their jobs, and possibly their careers for criticizing Charlie Kirk, and sometimes for merely quoting Kirk in his own words!

I want to quote parts of this article by Charlie Pierce.  The actual title is shown below, but it’s important to not that it shows up as “thought crimes” in the URL itself.

Charlie Kirk’s Assassination Has Taken Us Down a Dark, Orwellian Path  (paywalled)

by Charles Pierce

What the hell is going on in this country? If the authoritarian Right wants to make a cult of martyrdom out of an unforgivable act of public murder, it should go ahead and do so. But there is absolutely no reason for them to drag the rest of us into their rituals. Flags at half-staff and threats against local officials who decline to do so? Tributes at major league ballparks? A memorial service at the Kennedy Center? Professors fired over their reactions to the event on social media, most of which paled against the things that Kirk said, as a matter of course, that made him rich and influential.

From NBC News:

Even worse, the members of the Cabinet have signed onto the scouring of social-media posts in search of (once) protected speech that they deem disrespectful. Pete Hegseth is leading the way at the DoD. He’s already got one head on his wall.

From USA Today:

Nice to see who’s advising the defense department these days on personnel matters. Unsurprisingly, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has joined the parade, turning the visa process upside down and into even more of a mess than it was before.

Returning to the situation with Karen Attiah, the game was given away with that line about how Attiah’s posts “endangered” her colleagues. That’s the real thing here, isn’t it? To threaten reprisals against thought crimes and then follow through by any means, fair or foul. I’ve lived through how conservatives used the suicide of Vince Foster as a truncheon on the Clinton administration, and before that they used the suicide of a woman named Susan Coleman for the same purpose. That’s how the infamous “Clinton Body Count” was born. Its reach extended all the way to the 2016 murder of DNC staffer Seth Rich, whose corpse was used as a club on Hillary Clinton. So, frankly, coerced conservative demands for respect for the dead ring a little false to me.

I was about to write “scary times”, but it’s worse than that.

Dangerous times.  And they are not just dangerous, they are disingenuous.  Hell, they are lying liars who lie.

Is anyone else already tired of talking about Charlie Kirk?

The administration starts the fire and then are shocked when it burns.  Repeat.

I am aware of the troubling incident that has unfolded in Franklin Park.

This is a developing situation and the people of Illinois deserve a full, factual accounting of what’s happened today to ensure transparency and accountability.

ICE officer fatally shoots man during traffic stop in Chicago suburb.  (Chicago Sun-Times)

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers were conducting “targeted law enforcement activity” in Franklin Park when they stopped the vehicle, according to a statement from the agency.

Pritzker said he was “aware of the troubling incident that has unfolded in Franklin Park.

“This is a developing situation and the people of Illinois deserve a full, factual accounting of what’s happened today to ensure transparency and accountability,” Pritzker said in a statement.

The Resurrection Project, a community advocacy group, said the “horrific incident in Franklin Park shows us the real danger that militarized enforcement creates in our neighborhoods.

“A community member is dead, and an officer was injured,” Erendira Rendón, a leader with the group, said in a statement. “These are outcomes that serve no public safety purpose and leave entire communities traumatized. Safe neighborhoods depend on trust, not fear. When federal agents conduct unaccountable operations in our communities, everyone becomes less safe.”

Federal officials said the man had a “history of reckless driving.”

The only Cook County cases for a man with the shooting victim’s name are for traffic violations. He has four cases dating back to 2010, according to court records.

The most recent was in 2019 for operating an uninsured vehicle. The case was thrown out within a month. The other three citations are for speeding, driving with an expired license and again operating an uninsured vehicle.

There have been reports of traffic stops by immigration authorities this week in the suburbs. Legal experts say ICE officers generally don’t have the authority to stop a vehicle unless they have specific reasonable suspicion that the person in the car has violated immigration law.

Officials and advocates in the Los Angeles area said federal immigration officers were targeting people in vehicles there. A U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer fired his gun during a traffic stop in San Bernardino, Calif., last month, and the family in that case said officers didn’t identify themselves before breaking their car windows.

More.

Federal immigration agents fatally shot a man Friday morning in the Northwest suburbs after he allegedly attempted to flee a traffic stop and struck an officer with his car, officials said.

The shooting comes days after President Donald Trump’s long-promised immigration enforcement campaign launched in the Chicago area earlier this week, generating widespread fear in immigrant communities in the city and suburbs.

A neighbor who knew the shooting victim described him to the Chicago Sun-Times as a family man who he imagined was scared when confronted by officers — in part because he wasn’t fluent in English. Gov. JB Pritzker called for a “full, factual” accounting of what led to the shooting.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers were conducting “targeted law enforcement activity” in Franklin Park when they stopped the vehicle, according to a statement from the agency.

During the stop, a man allegedly resisted arrest and attempted to drive his car into officers, dragging one officer, according to the statement.

The officer opened fire and shot the man, the statement said. The man was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead, the statement said.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has identified the man as Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez. The Cook County medical examiner’s office has not yet identified him.

The officer was also taken to a hospital with “severe injuries.” His condition has stabilized, according to the statement.

“We are praying for the speedy recovery of our law enforcement officer,” a DHS spokesperson said. “He followed his training, used appropriate force, and properly enforced the law to protect the public and law enforcement.”

FBI agents were at the scene Friday assisting in the response, the agency confirmed. The FBI hasn’t provided any additional information on its investigation.
