Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

When we show up, we win.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

There are times when telling just part of the truth is effectively a lie.

Their boy Ron is an empty plastic cup that will never know pudding.

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson is the bland and smiling face of evil.

If you don’t believe freedom is for everybody, then the thing you love isn’t freedom, it is privilege.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Finding joy where we can, and muddling through where we can’t.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Democracy is not a spectator sport.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

Wait, what?

Their freedom requires your slavery.

He wakes up lying, and he lies all day.

Disagreements are healthy; personal attacks are not.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Al Franken

This post is in: Humorous

I have stated before that I rarely find Al Franken funny any more, but he was just on What Do you Know? with Michael Feldman on NPR this morning, and when Franken’s subject matter is the appalling Bill O’Reilly, he can be pretty damn amusing.

My favoprite thing he said was when he was discussing the well-publicized row between O’Reilly and Franken at the book convention. Franken stated:

Molly Ivins was there promoting her new book, Bushwhacked, I was there promoting my new book, Lies and the Lying Liars who Tell Them, and O’Reilly was there promoting his new book, Living With Herpes.

I laughed out loud.

*** Update ***

In other news, Peter Huessy says Al Franken is still a big fat idiot.

Lies, Damned Lies, and Misleading Statements

by John Cole|  September 20, 20039:38 am| 42 Comments

This post is in: Politics

Several commenters in my post below about Kevin Drum’s Taxonomy of Foolishness seem to think I am missing the point, but in reality, I think it is they whoare having trouble grasping my objections. I am going to try this one more time, and then, perhaps my objections to this nonsense will be understood.

I guess the very best way to start this discussion is with a picture of a cat. Below is a picture of Kevin’s cat, Inkblot:

Blog_Inkblot_Bedroom_Stretching.jpg

By any standards, Inkblot appears to be a happy cat. At any rate, what would everyone’s reaction be if I made the following statement:

Kevin Drum’s cat, Inkblot, has three legs.

Time for Example #2, and we must reach into the sack of cold war jokes to help make the point. Here goes:

An American and a Soviet were in a foot race. The American won the race, and the next day in the Soviet-run newspaper Tass, the headline as follows:

Russian Comes in Second, Amercians Beat Only One Country

Now, if you think that both of those statements were lies, chances are you and I are not going to see anything eye to eye from here on out, because neither of those statements were lies. They were misleading as hell, but they were not lies. And this is what is driving me crazy about the Democrats and their current attempt to take EVERYTHING Bush says and call it a lie.

In the course of American history, politicians have been known to put the best face on their policies. They have been known to use statistics which best shape their case. Environmental groups have been known to make dire predictions based on weak science, feminist groups have been known to call all men ‘potential rapists.’ Why, one previous President said all of the folowing things:

“I want to make it very clear that this middle-class tax cut, in my view, is central to any attempt we’re going to make to have a short-term economic strategy.”

or

“That child would be alive today if that gun had had a child trigger lock on it.”

or

In the 60 Minutes interview, Steve Kroft asked: “I’m assuming from your answer that you’re categorically denying you’ve ever had an affair with Gennifer Flowers?” Clinton replied: “I’ve said that before, and so has she.” In his deposition in the Paula Jones case, Clinton admitted having sex with Flowers.

and

“All I’ve been asked about by the press are a woman I didn’t sleep with and a draft I didn’t dodge.” – ABC News’ Nightline, February 12, 1992.

All of which are at the very least misleading statements, yet there never seemed to be any outrage bubbling up from the left? What is the difference?

The difference, of course, is clear- Bush is a Republican, and thus, every attempt must be made to contort, distort, selectively misquote, and obfuscate so that every statement, regardless of how innocuous or accurate, is portrayed as a lie. As I stated before, this is an election strategy, not a concern for accuracy in politics. Thus, when Bush states “More than 40 percent of people who receive dividends make under $50,000 per year” it must be portrayed as a lie because there might be someone out there who thought it meant something different. Seriously- that is what some Democrats want you to believe qualifies as a lie.

In Kevin’s taxonomy of lies, he failed to mention the one that the Democrats are best at creating, which is the ‘lie that occurs because things change.’ For example, if Bush right now stated “It is around ten o’clock on Saturday morning,” on Monday, Ted Kennedy would call a press conference and say “George Bush said it was ‘ten o’clock on Saturday morning,’ while clearly it is Monday. George Bush is a liar.”

Presidents are often wrong, Presidents often change positions. That does not make them a liar. Unless, of course, they are Republicans.

Dwight Meredith, however, does pose a good question:

Bill Clinton was asked under oath “are you having an affair with Ms. Lewinski?” (that is a paraphrase but the tense is correct). He answered no.

Was that a lie? As a technical matter he was not having an affair at that moment, he was giving a deposition.

The law imposes a duty in certain circumstances not only to be technically accurate but also to disclose all material facts.

The failure to disclose all material facts when in a fiduciary relationship, for instance, constitutes fraud under the law.

Should our Presidents have the duty to disclose all material facts about public policy issues they choose to address?

I think that is an interesting question and I for one, am not prepared to give a definitive answer.

The fact of the matter is that in the current political climate, that is precisely what Democrats are demanding of Bush, while conveniently excluding themselves from the same standards. When Howard Dean LIES about his position regarding social security, it is a ‘flip-flop’ or a mistake. When Bush changes his mind or puts forward the best case for his policy (and remember, almost every policy proposal is at its heart subjective- we really can not predict outcomes with any degree of certainty- Matt Stinson has some good posts on this topic), he is called a liar.

Why the drive to call Bush a liar, to remake what is and is not a lie- November 2004, not because of some close personal relationship that Democrats have with captial T truth. Don’t play their game.

And while we are at it- you leftists can stop with the Bush/Hitler comparisons regarding ‘The Big Lie’ any day now. Grow up.

Bowling For Columbine

I just saw Bowling for Columbine, and as was expected, it was neither as good nor as bad as most would have you believe. Moore was fast and loose with a lot of things- but that is to be expected. The subject he covered best was his criticism of the media’s incessant coverage of crime as well as his discussion of race, the lowpoint was the treatment of Charlton Heston.

Overall, I am so numb to outrage from the far-left and far-right anymore that I didn’t even come close to throwing anything at the television. Roger & Me was still a better film, though.

Or What?

by John Cole|  September 19, 20034:28 pm| Leave a Comment

This post is in: Foreign Affairs

Critics of this administration are fond of saying that since no WMD have been found, Bush has no credibility on the international scene. I agree that not finding WMD was damaging, but if you really want to see what having no credibility means, read this:

Britain, France and Germany have sent a letter to Iran to resolve the stalemate over inspections of an alleged nuclear arms program, raising US concern of a split in the Western front on this issue, according to officials in Paris and Vienna.
In Paris, the French foreign ministry confirmed the sending of the letter in August but denied that it offered a deal with Tehran.

To which my reaction was: “Or What?” Twelve years of toughly worded Security Council resolutions? I bet they are shaking in heir boots.

Taxonomy of Foolishness

by John Cole|  September 19, 20034:18 pm| 42 Comments

This post is in: Democratic Stupidity

Kevin Drum has created a taxonomy of Bush lies, and fi you just want to spare yourself some time, here is all you really need to know: Bush and Co. are lying whenever Democrats say he is lying.

Kevin lists several types of lies. First, there is the brazen lie, which is known by virtually every other human being on the planet by its simpler name, which is ‘a lie.’ As an example of the brazen lie, he offers up Cheney’s performance this week-end. I have no problem with the brazen lie– it is indeed a lie in every sense of the term.

The second type of ‘lie’ described by Kevin is the “the confidently expressed, but currently undisprovable assertion.” You are probably familiar with this second type of lie, because elsewhere outside the Planet Democrat, that is known as a policy disagreement. Kevin offers up this ridiculous bit as an example of this second type of ‘lie’:

For example, the idea that his (Bush) 2003 tax cut proposal would spur job growth was almost universally scorned by mainstream economists, but you couldn’t prove it wouldn’t work, so he got away with it.

Surprise, surprise. You can’t prove it did work, you can not prove it did not work- has to be a lie. We have the economy as it was, and we have the economy as it is now with the tax cuts. We can’t go back and have a do-over without the tax cuts to see if job growth and economic growth – grown-up adults will just have to agree to disagree, but only in the schoolyard playground that is Democrat electoral politics could anyone consider this a lie.

This second type of lie is one that seems to motivate most of the hatred in Democrats. They simply are incapable of accepting a viewpoint other than their own, and anything contrary to their belief structure is a lie. Say, for example, you think of your self as pro-environment but you don’t think the Kyoto treaty was good policy- LIAR! You hate the environment.

Say that you think privatizing Social Security is a decent option for the long-term health of the system- LIAR! You just want to tear apart the social safety net that Democrats have worked so hard to build. I don’t need to give any more examples- 90% of the time you hear or read someone on the left accuse this administration of lying, this is what they really mean- I disagree with your position.

Kevin’s third type of lie is what he calls the technical lie, and here is his definition:

a statement that’s very carefully constructed to leave an incorrect impression

Just someone put a bullet in Arafat:

President Bush acknowledged today that efforts toward peace in the Middle East had stalled and he blamed the Palestinian leader Yasir Arafat, whom he branded a failure.

But Mr. Bush restated his commitment to a “road map” for peace and said a new Palestinian leadership would ease the way.

“I remain committed, solidly committed to the vision of two states living side by side in peace and security,” Mr. Bush said, referring to Israel and a future Palestinian state. “Yet that would only happen with new Palestinian leadership committed to fighting terror, not compromised by terror.”

Killing Arafat will not inflame the middle east- killing Arafat will be the first step towards peace in the region. He is, for all intents and purposes, the Mullah Omar of the PLO. He needs to be terminated.
