Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

You know he’s going to shit a cat.

A tremendous foreign policy asset… to all of our adversaries.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

White supremacy is terrorism.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Finding joy where we can, and muddling through where we can’t.

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Democracy is not a spectator sport.

You would normally have to try pretty hard to self-incriminate this badly.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

There is no compromise when it comes to body autonomy. You either have it or you do not.

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

Lindsey Graham: Remove Habeas Corpus From the Constitution

by Michael D.|  June 14, 200810:09 am| 66 Comments

This post is in: War on Terror aka GSAVE®, Republican Crime Syndicate - aka the Bush Admin.

Graham is so outraged by the Supreme Court decision, that it appears that’s just what he’s prepared to push for:

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) vowed Thursday to do everything in his power to overturn the Supreme Court’s decision on Guantanamo Bay detainees, saying that “if necessary,” he would push for a constitutional amendment to modify the decision.

Graham blasted the decision as “irresponsible and outrageous,” echoing the sentiments of many congressional Republicans and President Bush.

I simply don’t know what to say about the complete idiotocracy that has ruled the Republican Party for the past 8 years.

A Bat in the House

by John Cole|  June 14, 20089:40 am| 74 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

Woke up this morning and saw a brown spot on the wall in the living room, and went to investigate, and lo and behold there is a bat in the house. I have now spent two and a half hours trying to sheperd the bat outside, with no luck.

It is now starting to look like I may have a roommate. Tunch, perceptive as always, still has not seen the bat.

*** Update ***

I am now bat free. Which is good, because I was beginning to look crazy running around my apartment with my door and windows open wielding a broom, a bucket, and a beach towel.

Your Choice in November

Someone who knows how to save money, or someone who spends uncontrollably.

Senators John McCain and Barack Obama released their Senate financial disclosure statements on Friday, revealing that Mr. McCain and his wife had at least $225,000 in credit card debt and that Mr. Obama and his wife had put more than $200,000 into college funds for their daughters.

I know the McCains are richer than god, but I cannot fathom how you can run up that much credit card debt. But then, I can’t fathom how I could ever get a $225,000 credit limit.

The flooding in the midwest is just amazing. I have been to many of the places that are now underwater when I lived in Iowa City for six months. I hope they can save Hannibal, MO.

Are any of you from that region?

Let’s Get Something Straight

by John Cole|  June 13, 20086:35 pm| 293 Comments

This post is in: Media

I liked Tim Russert, even though I thought his BS gotcha nonsense was thorough idiocy and not helping the debate at all. He was a likable guy- friendly, always smiling. I understand it is a loss for the beltway folks, and he had a lot of really good friends and meant a lot to people, and I would be dishonest if I failed to mention that I feel sad by his passing.

MSNBC has been running nothing but a 5 hour (and presumably it will go until 11 pm or beyond) marathon of Russert remembrance. CNN has done their due diligence, and Fox news has spent at least the last half hour talking non-stop about him.
But let’s get something straight- what I am watching right now on the cable news shows is indicative of the problem- no clearer demonstration of the fact that they consider themselves to be players and the insiders and, well, part of the village, is needed. This is precisely the problem. They have walked the corridors of power so long that they honestly think they are the story. It is creepy and sick and the reason politicians get away with all the crap they get away with these days.

Tim Russert was a newsman. He was not the Pope. This is not the JFK assassination, or Reagan’s death, or the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion. A newsman died. We know you miss him, but please shut up and get back to work.

*** Update ***

I have to admit, that even after six years of blogging, I am still surprised at the reactions of people to some things. This post was not an attack on Russert, someone I have said I liked and will miss. It is a sad situation- he was clearly widely loved, and his death is a terrible loss for his family and friends. But that is beside the point, as this post was a commentary on the coverage of his passing, which seems to me, at least, to be indicative of a larger problem. On the upside of the coverage, though, is this observation that at least MSNBC will not be running prison reality shows all weekend.

The Enthusiasm Gap

by Michael D.|  June 13, 20083:57 pm| 55 Comments

This post is in: Election 2008

Republicans are far less enthusiastic about voting this year than are Democrats (ed. No shit!):

Sixty-three percent of Democrats questioned say they are either extremely or very enthusiastic about voting this year. Only 37 percent of Republicans feel the same way, and 36 percent of Republicans say they are not enthusiastic about voting.

“Republicans are far less enthusiastic about voting than Democrats are, and enthusiasm has plummeted among GOPers since the start of the year,” said Keating Holland, CNN polling director. “There was already an ‘enthusiasm gap’ in January, when Democrats were 11 points higher than GOPers on this measure. Now, that gap has grown to 26 points.”

“Bottom line: After eight years of the Bush presidency, Republicans are demoralized,” said Bill Schneider, CNN senior political analyst.

I can’t blame them. Their party just sucks. What’s to be enthusiastic about on the GOP side? I did find this statistic odd, however:

Another question hovering over this year’s campaign: Race. Forty-two percent say Obama’s race will make it more difficult for him to get elected, with 57 percent disagreeing.

“That concern is higher among Democrats, at 48 percent, than Republicans, at 36 percent,” Schneider said.

Does this mean Democrats think that their fellow Democrats are racist? Or does it mean that Republicans think Democrats are not racist? Or does it mean something altogether different?

RIP, Tim Russert

by Michael D.|  June 13, 20083:06 pm| 186 Comments

Tim Russert, host of Meet the Press, collapsed at NBC studios today and died of a heart attack. Tom Brokaw made the announcement.

He was “one of the premier political journalists and analysts of his time,” Tom Brokaw, the former longtime anchor of “NBC Nightly News,” said in announcing Russert’s death. “This news division will not be the same without his strong, clear voice.”

Horrible news. Russert was only 58.

Update: Since MTP is pretty much a staple of Sunday talk shows, and because it’s presumably going to be around for awhile, who would you like to see as a replacement? Yeah, I know Russsert just died, but I think it’s a good question. And it’s certainly relevant because MTP is a very popular news show, so a replacement is worth talking about.

Update II: Brokaw’s announcement.
