Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

This really is a full service blog.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Let me file that under fuck it.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Dear Washington Post, you are the darkness now.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

Humiliatingly small and eclipsed by the derision of millions.

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

The low info voters probably won’t even notice or remember by their next lap around the goldfish bowl.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

If you don’t believe freedom is for everybody, then the thing you love isn’t freedom, it is privilege.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

You know he’s going to shit a cat.

Let there be snark.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

Mitt Romney, Economist

by John Cole|  January 30, 20085:17 pm| 100 Comments

This post is in: Election 2008

I have the flu and a fever, so feel free to write this off as feverish conjecture, but I find this interesting:

Given four choices, 45 percent of Florida Republican primary voters said the economy is the most important issue facing the country. Terrorism was picked by 21 percent of voters, while immigration and Iraq were picked by relatively few. The economy also was the top issue out of three choices for voters in the Democratic primary, which none of the candidates contested because of questions about whether Florida’s Democratic delegates will be seated at the convention. The economy has been seen as increasingly important since the start of the 2008 presidential nomination season. McCain won the votes of Republican voters most concerned about the economy, getting 40 percent of their support. Clinton easily won the support of those Democrats who were most concerned about the issue.

Unless I am confused, isn’t Mitt Romney’s whole campaign based around his business acumen, and his ability to get the economy back on track? And yet, even among Republicans, he can not capitalize on his so-called strength?

Is it possible that his business experience is a net negative- with people losing their asses in the market and losing their homes because of the loan fiasco and after several years of an allegedly booming economy that people are not feeling, perhaps Mitt merely symbolizes the business executive cashing end of the year 30 million dollar bonus checks while everyone else is hurting?

Again, just a feverish thought, because I am not sure why those concerned with the economy broke for McCain.

The Torture Regime

by John Cole|  January 30, 20084:49 pm| 29 Comments

This post is in: Republican Crime Syndicate - aka the Bush Admin.

The real legacy of the Bush administration:

It’s really hard for me to believe that someone who used to be a federal judge can blow that sophistry in a congressional hearing with a straight face. If you don’t know what they know, then you can’t know in advance if what they know might save lives, right?

I honestly don’t know why everybody’s so hung up on waterboarding specifically at this point. If this is their legal understanding, then they can use the rack, they can break arms and legs and they can pull teeth out with a pair of pliers. There is no logical difference between any of that and waterboarding if the only moral and legal guideline is that “it might be used to save lives.”

Just something to chew on for the next 40 years as we pay down the debt run up during this compassionate conservative’s stellar two terms.

Hugh Hewitt Suicide Watch

McCain beats Romney handily, Giuliani is set to endorse McCain tomorrow, the Terminator is praising McCain and Nancy Reagan is gonna lend the mantle of Saint Ronnie to McCain, and Romney has been such an utter douchebag with his big money attack ads and phalanx of bootlicking supporters that Huckabee is going to stay in the race just to screw Romney. And if anyone deserves a right and proper screwing, it is that smarmy SOB Multiple Choice Mitt.

Maybe we should be less concerned with a Hugh Hewitt Suicide Watch and focussed on a John Cole Schadenfreude Watch.

The country could really do a lot worse than a McCain/Obama or McCain/Clinton match-up in November. No, the Republican race is not over, and Romney could still win, but I am going to watch the establishment freak out and I am going to love it.

No Balconies in Florida

If this exit polling is accurate, then Giuliani’s campaign is over.

This is undeniably a good thing for the country, and while they are probably too damned stupid to realize it, a good thing for the long-term health of the GOP. With this megalomaniac and authoritarian out of the race, I feel like the country just dodged a bullet.

The latest edition in a sad saga.

I have nothing but contempt for George Bush, that pissant of a man.
