Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

A fool as well as an oath-breaker.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Dear Washington Post, you are the darkness now.

I have other things to bitch about but those will have to wait.

Trump’s cabinet: like a magic 8 ball that only gives wrong answers.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty. ~Thomas Jefferson

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

Let there be snark.

Is trump is trying to break black America over his knee? signs point to ‘yes’.

This is dead girl, live boy, a goat, two wetsuits and a dildo territory.  oh, and pink furry handcuffs.

This fight is for everything.

When we show up, we win.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. do not touch it.”

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

“woke” is the new caravan.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Uncovered forum posts by Tim Walz could shake up race. Petri at her best. https://t.co/V5Awvj5LPL

— Wanda (@itsWanda) September 20, 2024

I wouldn’t rate this column as one of Petri’s best, but oh the codicil…:

CNN and ProPublica found that Democratic vice-presidential nominee Tim Walz is the owner of an active account on the website HotOrNotDish.net, where he posts under the anonymous username DarthTater, according to an investigative analysis of comments on the forum. The user DarthTater has for more than a decade offered compliments (sometimes accompanied by a flame emoji) under every single photo uploaded to the site for hot dish appreciators.

The account also mentioned the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. in one post, in which it wished other HotOrNotDish.net users a “happy MLK weekend!” and hoped they would get to “spend it with family, eating hot dish.”

Walz appears to have been active under the same username for years on a variety of HotOrNotDish.net’s subforums for other hot dish-related issues, including once posting 24 times in a thread dedicated to the question of “Is hot dish casserole?” DarthTater ultimately concluded, “Sorry, friends. I’ve got to hit the hay. A lot of good points. Food for thought (almost as delicious as hot dish).”…

Update: The website HotOrNotDish.net did not actually exist at the time of publication but has since been set up by an anonymous hot-dish fan to redirect users to Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign website after first showering them with Tater Tots. The Post is not responsible for the website — not even, alas, the tots.

I have been stressing about all of the cheating that is the core of the R plan to destroy democracy . . . so I will do a beer run this morning, and then maybe write some postcards. On a lighter (though more caloric) note: I usually make cast-iron-pan pizza using sourdough discard, but my discard amount is more than the original formula calls for. No problem: I scale it up and make a smaller pizza as well as the larger one. BUT! This time, I hacked the leftover discard–I added some hazelnut flour and hazelnut paste. I’m going to bake it, and then make a chocolate hazelnut ganache (i.e., Nutella) to spread on the baked crust. Ice cream on top, maybe? Dunno. The regular pizza will use up the fresh mozzarella, basil, prosciutto, arugula, and tomatoes sitting around the kitchen.

Today, I begin my second round of visiting the 68 households of registered D’s in my neighborhood.  I’m going to need some grit as I’m very low energy, with little sleep.  But.  Talking with people creates energy for me.  I find them interesting.  So I might have a good time.  It’s going to be unreasonably hot, so I’ll stop when I’ve had enough.

Can I encourage those who can, to vote early?  Vote chasers like me can leave you alone once the system shows that you have voted.  I have a number of neighbors who say that they prefer to vote in person on the day.  I brightly say, “Be sure to say hi to my husband then!  He’s one of the poll workers!”  So they know I’ll know.  (Only one shift.  He’s there from 6am to about 9pm.)

Yesterday, one win in court for Arizona voters with uncertain documentation but one loss in the 9th circuit.

Arizona’s 2022 controversial voter registration and mail-in voting law will be reinstated due to a ruling from the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Signed into law in June 2022, Senate Bill 1260 includes three harmful provisions: the cancellation provision, the felony provision and the removal provision.

    • The cancellation provision requires county recorders to cancel a voter’s registration if they receive confirmation that the voter is registered to vote in another Arizona county;
    • The felony provision makes it a felony to forward a mail-in ballot to a voter who may be registered in another state and
    • The removal provision creates a process to remove voters from the state’s permanent vote-by-mail list if the voter is registered in another county.

    . . .

In its ruling today, the court determined that the plaintiffs did not have standing for the cancellation provision because they failed to show how the law would directly harm the organizations’ core activities. One member of the three-judge panel dissented, writing that she would affirm the district court’s preliminary injunction because the “cancellation provision likely violates the National Voter Registration Act.”

    . . .

The case was remanded back to district court where litigation will continue.

    And more news about Elon:

(Reuters)The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said on Friday it intends to seek sanctions against Elon Musk after he failed to appear for court-ordered testimony for the regulator’s probe into his $44 billion takeover of Twitter.

In a filing in San Francisco federal court, the SEC said the sanctions motion would seek an order to show cause for why Musk should not be held in civil contempt for waiting until three hours before the scheduled Sept. 10 testimony to advise he would not show up.

Musk, whose businesses include electric car maker Tesla (TSLA.O),  and rocket company SpaceX and who is the world’s richest person, went to Florida’s Cape Canaveral that day to oversee the launch of SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn mission.

But the SEC said that as SpaceX’s chief technical officer, Musk “surely was already aware” of the planned launch because the company had discussed it two days earlier. It said Musk’s actions violated a May 31 court order compelling his testimony.

“Musk’s excuse itself smacks of gamesmanship,” SEC lawyer Robin Andrews wrote. “The court must make clear that Musk’s gamesmanship and delay tactics must cease.”

Alex Spiro, a lawyer for Musk, called sanctions “drastic” and unnecessary, saying Musk’s absence from the launch could have endangered astronauts’ lives, and that his testimony has been rescheduled for Oct. 3.

Musk’s failure to testify on Sept. 10 resulted from an “emergency” he did not cause, and “there is no reason to believe such an emergency will reoccur,” Spiro wrote.

@Nukular Biskits: I had a sports car once when I was younger – well, maybe not what some would define as a sports car, but it felt like it to me. 1989 Dodge Daytona, Shelby trim in silver, with five on the floor and T-tops and the digital dash, decent trunk space, capable of getting around in a late-nineties New Jersey winter, and it didn’t guzzle gas (which was good, because it was a turbo that demanded premium unleaded).

Two years after I bought it, some yuppie in a roided-out Ford SUV T-boned me and destroyed it.

Meanwhile, lowkell at BlueVirginia.US has receipts:

Yes, [Virginia Governor fuzzy-vest] Youngkin really did help fundraise/campaign for Mark Robinson, the infamous “black Nazi,” “Transgender Porn & Slavery,” “‘I Absolutely Want To Go Back To The America Where Women Couldn’t Vote,” “Mein Kampf”-loving Republican gubernatorial nominee in North Carolina. Of course, Youngkin’s the same guy who campaigned in 2022 for nutjobs and extremists like Kari Lake in Arizona (who Youngkin enthusiastically exclaimed was “AWESOME!”) and many others – Paul LePage in Maine, Tudor Dixon in Michigan, Hung Cao in VA10, Yesli Vega in VA07, etc, etc. Fortunately, most of these MAGA nuts lost, but still, it’s VERY revealing about who and what Youngkin are – definitely NOT a “moderate”! – that he enthusiastically campaigned for them. This should never be forgotten by anyone…

P.S. Also, reminder that the “mainstream” media’s supposed “journalists” (in air quotes) mostly spent 2021 whitewashing, “sanewashing,” amplifying, etc. Glenn Youngkin as some sort of sweater-vest-wearing, suburban “moderate.” And yes, this is just what the “mainstream” media does, sad to say – over and over and over again – with MAGA extremists. Because they’re terrified to call them out? Want to pretend to be faux-“balanced” in their coverage? Actually WANT fascism to triumph?

    […]

There are no “moderates” in today’s GQP. They’re (almost) all monsters. And we have to vote the monsters out.

The most ridiculous thing about the SAVE Act is that they’re demanding to get it passed and implemented nationwide for this election, which they have to know would be practically impossible even if the thing made any sense (which it doesn’t)–voting has already started in this election! So I think it’s really yet another “throw up chaff and sow confusion and doubt” move.

The other “weird trick” stories are a lot like the ones about the “sovereign state legislature”/fake electors nonsense in 2020: I think it’s important to realize that even a Supreme Court with the same right-wing members it has now rejected all that without even bothering to comment, and a lot of the people involved in the scheme have actually been convicted of crimes.

But Republicans were talking about it openly in advance of the election, that they were going to sow doubt about the results in exactly the way they did, and try to get the result overturned if they lost–as I’ve said before, they were monologuing like Bond villains, spilling their whole plan apparently intentionally.

I think all this activity has a number of purposes. Some of them are true believers, John Eastman types, and really think they can turn a loss into a win this way. Some may think they can manifest their wishes as reality by talking about them enough. But they’re also trying to discourage Democrats by convincing them the fix is in, and also rile up their own supporters to get smashy when things don’t go their way.

On a personal I want to scream and cry and beat someone (possibly JD Vance) to death note, My youngest grandson went to his first day at preschool yesterday. They have parents and/or caregivers accompany the kids for the first couple of classes. During the time we were warned not to worry, the class next door was getting their first lock down drill and our kids would get theirs in a couple of weeks once they had settled in. LOCK DOWN DRILL?! He turned TWO two weeks ago and he has to be taught what to do if “bad people” come into the school? He’s only up to 5-6 word sentences with zero grammar “Pick up brother, me” when he wants to go with me to pick up his brother after school. His idea of bad people is the Mayor on Paw Patrol. I just want to cry. These are BABIES and they have to be taught about the really ugly side of America.

I understand the tornado and fire drills, those are random acts that can happen. but LOCK DOWN drills, something is so wrong with this country.

It’s hard.  Peace and comfort to you and yours.

Living, there is no happiness in that. Living: carrying one’s painful self through the world.

But being, being is happiness. Being: becoming a fountain, a fountain on which the universe falls like warm rain.

    – Kundera, Immortality.

    Remember the good times.

    Best wishes,

    Meanwhile, GovExec.com – from 9/19:

    […]

The 202-220 vote in the House, with two members voting present and 14 Republicans in opposition, came shortly after Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump called on lawmakers to force a government shutdown as leverage to enact the voter ID law.

“If Republicans don’t get the SAVE Act, and every ounce of it, they should not agree to a Continuing Resolution in any way, shape, or form,” Trump wrote on social media, doubling down on a shutdown statement he made last week.

The unsuccessful House vote could provide space for Speaker Mike Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, to negotiate with the Senate.

But, with just one week left in the session before Congress departs for a six-week election break, there’s not much time for leaders to find consensus, draft a bill, hold votes in both chambers and secure President Joe Biden’s signature.

    […]

In divided government, any legislation to fund the government must be bipartisan, or it all but guarantees a shutdown.

The House’s failed six-month continuing resolution also wasn’t supported by most Senate Republicans.

GOP senators argued it was too lengthy and could have hindered that chamber’s ability to confirm the next president’s Cabinet during the first few months of 2025.

Senate Republicans and defense hawks in the House also said that leaving the Department of Defense on autopilot for half of the next fiscal year was an abdication of Congress’ responsibility and a threat to national security.

    December end date eyed

The final stopgap spending bill that Congress approves in the days ahead will likely last through Dec. 20, the final day this year that Congress is scheduled to be in session. It is also unlikely to include the voter registration ID component.

That final, bipartisan continuing resolution could also include a plus-up in spending for the Secret Service or a provision that allows the agency to spend its stopgap allocation at a faster rate to bolster Trump’s security following two apparent assassination attempts.

    […]

There are some other things that need to be done (like renewing “locality pay” provisions that expire for some federal workers overseas – otherwise, they’ll get a 20+% pay cut on October 1, extending the deadline for spending the Ukraine PDA funding past September 30, etc.) that probably will be included. But these CRs are terribly disruptive and Congress really needs to rationalize the budget process – the current one is broken. No system can sensibly plan and work efficiently when their annual budget numbers aren’t known until 3+ months after the fiscal year starts, and the actual money isn’t received until weeks or months later…

We need to vote the monsters out!

    Forward!!

    Cheers,
    Scott.

    @rikyrah:

If your birth certificate doesn’t match your current ID, you can’t cast a ballot. You might be able to bypass it with a passport, but that equates to a poll tax.

This article is all over this:

Most women vote Democratic. And most still change their name when they marry. And that’s where the GOP sees an Achilles’ heel.

Republicans don’t want women to vote. They now think they may have a strategy that could prevent them from doing so. House Speaker Mike Johnson and former President Donald Trump were pushing the Safeguard American Eligibility, or SAVE, Act, demanding it be part of must-pass legislation to fund the federal government for another year (the funding runs out at the end of this month, and then the shutdown begins).

It died in the House Wednesday night, but, like a bad penny, you can bet it’ll return.

    *snip*

The SAVE Act is a proposed federal law, so, first off, it would put a future president (say, Trump) in charge of enforcing it, taking that power away from the states. Millions of voter registrations in any states the president decides are problematic could be removed until those voters “cure” their registrations, and state authorities would have no say in it.

And what will the law require citizens who want to vote do? Lacking a passport or other proof of citizenship with their married names, they must produce both a birth certificate (with the seal of the state where it was issued; no copies allowed) and a current form of identification—both with the exact same name on them. That could instantly disqualify about 90 percent of all married women without passports or other proof that matches their birth certificates or proof of a legal name change.

Way more to absorb and digest here:

    newrepublic.com/article/186160/republican-war-women-extends-voting-rights

I started to read this article last night and had to pause until this morning; I could feel my blood pressure rapidly rising.😡

    @rikyrah:

Wait, if your birth certificate has your maiden name and your ID has your married name, making them not match, it disqualifies you from voting?

Oh wow. I would love for everyone to start banging the drum that the GOP is shutting down the government over a bill that will stop many women from voting. That framing will only amplify the already high levels of engagement from women voters.

I’ve been trying to gauge the level of enthusiasm vs. fear. Fear has always been Trump’s best tool to suppress Dems and drive the GOP. I don’t know if this is the impression you all are getting, but Trump is just too old and incoherent these days to properly drive a message that does this. Sure his cronies are creating confusion and fear through voting law/rule tricks, but he’s just giving rambling and boring rallies.

@rikyrah: God, all these takes are forgetting what actually happened in 2016. The reason why reporters were talking about the leaks was because they had already been made public. Wikileaks was a necessary component of the process. They’re not around anymore, though even if they were, they would never engage in something that hurt Russian interests.

That’s the part that, presumably, the Irainians haven’t gotten yet. If they made the dump public to everyone, I’m pretty sure the ethical hesitations that reporters have on reporting the leaks would go away. People would start talking about the details with or without them and they’d want to get in on that.

@Eolirin: Marcy Wheeler has the emails and posted about why she hasn’t released them. She says the Harris campaign (unlike Trump in 2016) isn’t asking for them to be released. To Marcy this means she thinks the campaign would prefer the emails not become another news story that crowds out news about the Harris campaign. Which to me sounds reasonable.

  143. 143.

    Eolirin

    September 21, 2024 at 11:45 am

@SatanicPanic: Sure, but people are treating this as if the media is sitting on something they didn’t sit on in 2016, and that’s not actually right at all.

Until someone releases all the emails to the public the situations just aren’t the same. And we know that wikileaks was working with Russia and their release of the leaks was coordinated with the Trump campaign.

The Harris campaign is obviously not going to do anything like that. So it’s not really surprising that the media isn’t releasing the info themselves.

    @Eolirin:
I have seen no serious evidence that the leaking was done by Iranians. Is there any?
There’s moderately good evidence that the Trump campaign was hacked by Iranians, sure. In 2016, the DNC was hacked by at least two different parties (alleged by many to be SVR and GRU, but not clear) who may not have known about each other, and opportunistic insider leaks are also possible. (There are a few other theories as well.)
