Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

Human rights are not a matter of opinion!

The revolution will be supervised.

It is not hopeless, and we are not helpless.

When they say they are pro-life, they do not mean yours.

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

No Kings: Americans standing in the way of bad history saying “Oh, Fuck No!”

You are either for trump or for democracy. Pick one.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Disagreements are healthy; personal attacks are not.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

There is no compromise when it comes to body autonomy. You either have it or you do not.

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

Donald Trump found guilty as fuck – May 30, 2024!

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

Yet another example of things even really bad Presidents were able to do as a matter of course but which were too high bar for Trump. Genuinely a factional warlord more than a president. And the key thing is he doesn’t even understand the difference. A true degenerate. https://t.co/yzQMjJCDU1

— Josh Marshall (@joshtpm) October 3, 2024

Actual warlords, of course, can forcibly prevent their supporters from leaving their speeches… Per the Washington Post, “The reasons people leave Donald Trump’s rallies early”:

Less than 25 minutes into Donald Trump’s remarks, Melissa Prescott walked out.

She arrived at the Linda Ronstadt Music Hall in Tucson at 8:30 a.m. on a hot September day, waited in line outside with her teen daughter for more than four hours, then waited another hour inside before Trump took the stage about 2:15 p.m. As Trump was complaining about 2016 exit polls and speaking about how he likes “the old people the best,” Prescott, along with dozens of others, started trickling out.

“I’m glad we got in. I wish I could stay to hear more,” said Prescott, 36, who explained that she needed to go pick up her disabled cousin.

The Republican presidential nominee consistently draws large, enthusiastic and rowdy crowds to his rallies and other campaign events, and at nearly all of them, another trend is clear: Scores of people leave early.

Most stay. But Trump often runs late and goes long, prompting many to bow out because of other responsibilities, priorities or, sometimes, waning patience and interest, according to Washington Post interviews and observations across dozens of events. Some said they wanted to beat traffic or had work the next day. Others complained about sound quality. One man wanted to go home to his French bulldog. Another needed to get home to his daughter. A third had a Yorkie with him that started acting out. A fourth man said his phone died.

The early rally departures have touched a nerve in Trump, who has long shown intense interest in attendance, ratings and other optics. He has mentioned the subject in a defensive tone lately after Vice President Kamala Harris needled him over it and suggested people leave out of “exhaustion and boredom.”…

Trump repeatedly has resisted entreaties from advisers and allies to cut down on his speeches. “They want a show. They want two hours,” Trump said this year to an ally who suggested shorter speeches. Like others, the ally spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe a private conversation.

The former president has told advisers that after people stand for so long and wait for so long, he needs to give them something more than a “boring policy speech,” one person who has spoken to him said. The speechwriters craft remarks that are usually designed to go for 60 to 90 minutes, a campaign adviser said, but they know Trump will veer repeatedly off the script.

In Atlanta over the summer, crowds gathered for several blocks down a busy highway in the sweltering heat, waiting to get inside a Trump rally. But as he kept talking, slashing into Republican Gov. Brian Kemp and going off script, hundreds if not thousands of people left the arena.

More recently, in Indiana, Pa., attendees trickled out as Trump falsely claimed that “every legal expert” wanted abortion policy sent back to the states, over an hour into his speech. More left as he repeated his warning about “World War III.”

By 9:20 p.m., about 90 minutes after he began, the empty seats were noticeable at the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex, while Trump called the nation’s capital a “horror show.” He wrapped up his speech about five minutes later…

As I like to say, @realDonaldTrump is @KamalaHarris’s most effective surrogate …. https://t.co/CiTM49CccV

If you can believe it, there are scammers on Hair Füror’s $14/share boutique social media site (I mean other than the Big Tuna hisself), but it seems that if you are hunting for rubes to fleece, well, there’s a rich vein of ‘em there:

Donald Trump launched Truth Social in 2022 as a social media platform where the MAGA faithful could hang out without any liberals to spoil the fun. The biggest selling point? It was the only place where Trump was personally posting his unhinged screeds after getting banned from Twitter over that whole coup attempt. But new documents obtained by Gizmodo reveal the site has also been flooded with scammers who are swindling users out of enormous sums of money. We’re talking about people who’ve lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in a relatively short period of time.

    mockpaperscissors.com/2024/10/05/scammers-find-rubes-on-truth-social-report/

Funny that, “Truth Social” is a great source for pig slaughterers.

@West of the Rockies: I interpreted it thus:

    (1) Juicy is the shark; the red tie is to show he’s a trumper, he hasn’t changed.  there’s blood in the water to show how bloodthirsty he is.

    (2) but tim is above the ice, has hooked him, and they’re sitting there, in a deadlock.

    (3) neither can win, but neither can lose.

    (4) Oh, haha, maybe the tie is also a symbol of the fact that the debate is a …. TIE!  Haha!  But no, I don’t think so.

@West of the Rockies: I’m not sure entirely, either, but i take from the cartoon that Vance is a very big shark that we just don’t see. Underwater, means hidden from view, to me. As in stay tuned, this guy has danger written all over him, but he’s keeping it hidden.

Plus the idea that nice won’t work/ didn’t work with such a shark. And conceding it was a tie isn’t so great.

please note, ladies, this is a very unattractive shark.

While I see your point, the quoted piece did say he goes off script often.

Perhaps those scripts are what ends up in most of the mainstream press’s reports about these rallies. Their work of sanewashing would be easier with the original source.

There’s a line in a J.D. Salinger story (“Franny”) that describes a young man as having been talking to his date (Franny) continuously for several minutes, and reaching the point where he is convinced that his voice can do no wrong. (I didn’t use quote marks because it’s paraphrased; I didn’t feel like looking it up, but that’s close.)

I suspect that’s what happens to Trump at his rallies. He gets hypnotized by the sound of his own voice, and gets supplemental jolts of pleasure from knowing that thousands of people are listening to “me, Me, MEEEEEE!” Which is probably why his circuits went kablooey when Harris told the world that people walk out on his speeches: That’s when he’s most alive — when he can feel that he’s the true center of the universe.

Both CNN and MSNBC carried all or most of the Trump rally today, sigh. I didn’t watch, but saw on Twitter that Trump, speaking of the shooting at the last rally, said that the doctors were great, saved everybody, even him, when he ‘wasn’t supposed to make it’. Wondering – is Trump having a flashback to when he had COVID, or does he genuinely believe that you can bleed out from a nicked ear? Man, he’s really trying to make something heroic about that ear nick. Someone needs to tell him that Teddy Roosevelt was shot while campaigning, and insisted on finishing his speech with a bullet in his torso. (And TR lost the election, so you don’t get points for it.)

I heard something from Tim Walz during his “debate” with Vance that I’m hoping to see highlighted a lot over the next month. He was talking about how Americans are genuinely kind and thoughtful people  who don’t mind helping those in need and routinely welcome strangers … but that we’d like all of that to be orderly. We like the idea of systems that work (my language now, not his) and are fair. We should expect that from our government.

It was just this simple thing — implying that yeah, there are people who don’t approve of welfare or immigration, but not because they’re stingy assholes — they just want things to be orderly and predictable instead of seeming like a dangerous free-for-all.

I”m a geezer, and way old enough to remember Nixon’s “law and order” thing, and how appealing a lot of scared white people found that. When he used the word, “order,” you knew he was signaling a willingness to see hippies and uppity black people get beat up.

Tim’s using that same word, but in his mouth it just means knowing how to set up and manage processes that make sense and can be managed … and as a bonus it’s an appeal to people’s better angels. You’re not greedy and mean, neighbor — you just like the world to make sense, and that’s a good thing.

That kind of appeal would work with a lot of my non-political relatives. As Gretchen Whitmer put it, just fix the damn roads. Just get to work and sort shit out. This is connected to Harris’s repeated language about how “hard work is good work.” She’s signaling the same message: we see what needs to be fixed, and we’re up for the job, even if it seems hard and messy. We can bring order out of this clusterfuck.

I had the Department of Commerce at the time, believe it or not, they’re the ones that rule on this particular issue. so you have millions of gallons of water pouring down from the north, with the snow caps in Canada, and it all pouring down. and they have essentially a very large faucet. and you turn the faucet, and it takes a day to turn it. it takes one day to turn it, it’s massive. it’s as big as the wall of that building right there behind you. and you turn that, and all of the water goes into the— aimlessly into the Pacific. and if they turned it back, all of that water would come right down here and right into Los Angeles. they wouldn’t have to have people not use more than 30 gallons and 32 gallons. they want to do that, you know. they’re trying to do that. and you have so much water. and all those fields that are right now barren, the farmers would have all the water they needed. and you could revert water up into the hills, where you have all the dead forests, where the forests are so brittle.”

Large means ‘in proportion to location’ since he’s downgraded from the kind of stadium Kamala routinely fills to basically standing in the back of a pick-up truck parked outside the local bingo hall. Tighten that shot and it all looks good.

Enthusiastic means those attending are a smeared palette of red and blue Trump-branded merch on a background of spoiled-milk whiteness. Squint a little and you too can believe that every $99.99 rhinestone-studded ‘Cowboys For Trump’ stetson is worth 1000 Woke votes.

Rowdy means every attendee they tried to interview screwed up their wrinkled little face into a purple glans of hate before venting a spittle-flecked approximation of human mouth noises about ‘Media Bias’, ‘Deep State Phonies’ and ‘Hang you all by your balls’.

Donald Trump commuted Weiss’s sentence the day before he left office because of course he saw a kindred spirit in the jet-set conman.  Continuing to golf and going back to the same hard-to-defend site that got him shot at remind me a lot of Weiss.

This is connected to Harris’s repeated language about how “hard work is good work.” She’s signaling the same message: we see what needs to be fixed, and we’re up for the job, even if it seems hard and messy. We can bring order out of this clusterfuck.

I agree wholeheartedly. And this is what will ensure that those who voted for Biden who may have been unsure about Harris or turned off about the ‘brokered convention’ bullshit can be confident that Harris intends to be faithful to Biden’s commitment to doing the hard things.
Think about how many times there seemed to be some insurmountable obstacle and yet Biden’s team figured out a way to get it done and start fixing it: Student loans, multiple union strikes, natural disasters, inflation, supply chain problems, Afghanistan, Israel, Ukraine, Russia, Hamas. He didn’t let anyone use the dysfunctional GOP House or any other roadblock as a excuse to not try. Even if they couldn’t resolve a whole problem, they figured out a way to do one piece at a time.

Multiple agencies had been rendered effectively inoperable by TCG and his political hacks but yet those agencies are accomplishing things that were assumed too hard to do during booming economies, let alone during a recession.

Biden’s team proved not only that government could be effective, he proved good government was essential. Harris is picking up the theme and moving it forward and voters obviously don’t want to go back to appeasing an insane party that prefers entropy and chaos.

    @Baud: correct

Also, Baker continually confuses a drugged up psychopath ranting as “energetic” instead of “maniacal”.

I just read an interesting story at WaPo (in the editorial section) “The Cyber Sleuth” about Jarod Koopman, an IRS agent.  His unit specializes in cybercrime and bitcoin crimes.

Talk about your tax dollars at work!   Very impressive group of people.

    @Ken:

The excuses for leaving early aren’t very innovative.

That’s because they are probably paid attendees. They have been fleeing the moment their payment comes thru and everyone knows it. It was just less obviously when there were more people attending. And of course the MSM now feels they have to sanewash the fact that TCF can’t draw a crowd anymore.

@Gvg: I’m not an expert, but it didn’t look to me like one of those hid-in-the-sand sharks.

    @Kathleen:

In a sane media environment and country he would have been lauded, appreciated and not forced off the campaign.

The problem wasn’t the media. It was the members of his own party who continue to fall for a good hairdo (as long as there is a penis attached). How many fucking months in 2016 did the Democratic party waste arguing over rally attendance, shrillness, and canckles. The Dems have repeatedly shot themselves in the foot because they get sidetracked by some huckster who they think is more fuckable than someone who actually has experience and demonstrated competence. The MSM only had repeat what the leaders in the Democratic Party were saying to keep the email story alive. The usual Dem suspects were completely willing to let the WH go to that Conman just to keep her from showing them all up. And if she had managed to eek out a win, they already had destroyed any chance she could have an effective first term. They were planning on primarying her in 2020 and decided to run the game plan on Biden since they already had it in their back pocket on the off chance they could sneak some goodhair celebrity performance artist of their own into the WH. Assholes couldn’t imagine that a competent Black woman could possibly do what she did less than a month from the convention.

@Geminid: he’s been a good conman for so long, he can likely tell when the current con is starting to fail. And don’t forget that he spends every waking hour trying to silence the internal voices that tell him he’s worthless.
