Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Mediocre white men think RFK Jr’s pathetic midlife crisis is inspirational. The bar is set so low for them, it’s subterranean.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

When they say they are pro-life, they do not mean yours.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

No Kings: Americans standing in the way of bad history saying “Oh, Fuck No!”

“The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.”

Hey hey, RFK, how many kids did you kill today?

After dobbs, women are no longer free.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

One way or another, he’s a liar.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

Second rate reporter says what?

You cannot shame the shameless.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

If you can’t control your emotions, someone else will.

Kamala is celebrating her 60th birthday with 7,500 of her supporters in church in Atlanta tomorrow. The pastor has said they’re super excited and will be transporting congregation directly to early voting sites from the service x pic.twitter.com/ETYQjoeCN0

I find it fascinating that Trump's rallies are such horror shows that his opponent is begging people to watch the Trump rallies

This has to be a first in political history

Just go listen to him & you will vote for me https://t.co/18p4Iax3Fc

— RiotWomenn (@riotwomennn) October 19, 2024

I LOVE MY COUNTRY!

America is about freedom of choice, freedom of speech and freedom from tyranny.

That’s why I’m voting against Donald Trump in November. There’s no place in this beautiful country for autocracy.#KidVicious???? pic.twitter.com/IsKcN2epdn

— KID VICIOUS?? (@kirkacevedo) October 19, 2024

I don’t think this election is close.

I don’t think anyone should let their foot off the gas

I think it’s important Harris wins battleground states big, & wins states like TX & FL so it’s harder for Trump to claim he won but it was stolen

Ppl need to work to run up our numbers

Get your friends, get your siblings, get that guy at the end of the train who’s always on his headphones. Ask em to vote, help em vote, figure out why they may be reluctant to vote and see if you can address it.

This isn’t a sportsball game. A bigger win means bigger influence for your own values. Run up the score, baby.

I was at the Harris rally in Atlanta last night. I wasn’t planning on going, but my wife and 12 year old daughter found out we had an invite and told me in no uncertain terms I had no say in the matter.

I’m really glad I went. I find myself getting sucked into the daily maelstrom of news and polls seemingly headed in the wrong direction, so being amidst a diverse crowd of thousands all working towards a common purpose was a balm. The speakers we saw – Ossoff, Usher and Tyler Lee, a high school senior that introduced her – were all great and Harris was sharp, assured and on-point. About a third of the way through her speech, I saw on Blue Sky that Fox had cut away from Trump’s genital discourse and was showing the Harris rally. The contrast between her and Trump could not have been more stark.

Harris said last night that the race was incredibly close, but that we would win. After seeing her in person, after seeing the energy of thousands in this swing state willing to do the work and after the side-by-side with Trump, I think she’s right.

I’m guessing the early vote partisan split might start to freak out some folks, especially Jon Ralston’s highly reliable read on Nevada. But I think any early vote shift toward Republicans is a mirage generated by the cult-like nature of the MAGA crowd. What I see in my town is lots of Harris signs and a smaller number of Trumpers that have gone completely overboard. The photo of the house in Orion Township, MI, in the NYT article on “Door-Knocks, Texts, and Ads, Ads, Ads” is what a couple houses here look like. Totally overboard, but not an index of breadth of support.

I think the cultists will show up early, scare everyone, but the rumbling power of Dobbs and the Harris campaign will overwhelm them by election day.

So far, MVP and her team have done a great job campaigning.

Of course, no campaign is perfect. The two weeks following the debate could have been more productive in terms of media presence and I am still baffled why more has not been made of the Short-Fingered Vulgarian’s atrocious response to Covid. It is the antidote to the false claim Trumplethinskin is selling that his 4 year term was a golden era.

Still, all things considered, MVP and her team have run a stellar campaign.

A poem for VP Harris on her birthday:

You may write me down in history with your bitter, twisted lies,

you may trod me in the very dirt but still, like dust, I’ll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you? Why are you beset with gloom?

Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns, with the certainty of tides, just like hopes springing high, still I’ll rise.

Did you want to see me broken? Bowed head and lowered eyes? Shoulders falling down like teardrops, weakened by my soulful cries?

Does my haughtiness offend you? Don’t you take it awful hard

Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines diggin’ in my own backyard.

You may shoot me with your words, you may cut me with your eyes, you may kill me with your hatefulness, but still, like air, I’ll rise.

Does my sexiness upset you? Does it come as a surprise that I dance like I’ve got diamonds at the meeting of my thighs?

Out of the huts of history’s shame I rise! Up from a past that’s rooted in pain I rise!

I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide, welling and swelling I bear in the tide.

Leaving behind nights of terror and fear I rise!

Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear I rise!

Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave, I am the dream and the hope of the slave. I rise, I rise, I rise.

For anyone wondering how the transition planning is going for both campaigns, it’s about what you would expect.

By September 1, both campaigns were expected to sign a memorandum of understanding with the GSA that gives them access to office space, communications, equipment and IT support. The campaigns are also expected to submit an ethics plan and to identify the initial people who would need security clearances to begin receiving classified information during a transition.

“To date, GSA has entered into an MOU with the Harris transition team outlining the terms for space and services, and is prepared to provide services to the Trump transition team once an MOU is executed and services are accepted,” a GSA spokesperson said.

The Harris team has also submitted its ethics plan; the Trump team has not.

I wonder in particular how classified material will be handled if Trump signs what he is supposed to.

It is the season in Missouri. Homecoming parades. This week – the University of Missouri. Yesterday I got up at 1:30 a.m., was picked up at 2:30 a.m., drove to Sedalia, arrived at 3:00 a.m., switched vehicles – a truck towing a parade trailer, drove to Columbia, arrived at our first staging area at 4:30 a.m., slept for about 45 minutes on the open bed of the flatbed trailer [see, Josh Hawley (r), resident Missourians know the difference], arrived at the second staging area at 5:30 a.m., photographed the proceedings as the trailer was hitched to the candidate’s truck (the “Eladmobile” – Elad Gross is the Democratic Party candidate for Missouri Attorney General), rode to the assigned parade line-up spot, photographed the trailer/float final assembly, waited for the 8:00 a.m. start – we started rolling later, sat in the bed of the truck and photographed the parade and candidates, returned to the second staging area to disassemble the float and stow it on the trailer, ate lunch with a group of volunteers, rode the original truck towing the trailer back to Sedalia, dropped off a pair of 4 x 8 Elad Gross (D) signs, then proceeded back to Warrensburg to drop the truck and trailer (with stored float parts) at the staging area – in the lot of a private home near the start of next Saturday’s homecoming parade at the University of Central Missouri, drove back to Sedalia to get the first vehicle, dropped the driver off, and arrived back in Warrenburg at 4:30 p.m.

I took over 1100 frames at homecoming. It was a sunny day, good light. A Canon 5D III with a Tamron 150-600 mm lens, and a Canon 5D III with a 50 mm lens. I switched between the two throughout the parade.

    The result (with additional links):

    Arnold Palmer thoughts on Donold:

“My dad didn’t like people who act like they’re better than other people. He had no patience for people who are dishonest and cheat. My dad was disciplined. He wanted to be a good role model. He was appalled by Trump’s lack of civility and what he began to see as Trump’s lack of character.

One moment stood out in her mind from the 2016 campaign, when Mr. Palmer saw Mr. Trump on television: “My dad made a sound of disgust — like ‘uck’ or ‘ugg’ — like he couldn’t believe the arrogance and crudeness of this man who was the nominee of the political party that he believed in,” she recalled. “Then he said, ‘He’s not as smart as we thought he was.’”

Then yesterday he spent some time talking about men showering with other men and checking out each other’s junk.

I’ve been told that bros like Trump out of cultural affinity but none of that codes to a country music listening pickup truck driving manly man who makes his living with his hands. Seems like some of those guys should turn on him over his taste in music. I know it’s trivial but they focus on all kinds of trivial stuff.

I am beginning to think, and hear me out, Trump

    A. Doesn’t really want to win the Presidency, just wants to keep making the grift dollars to pay his legal bills and whine about everything being so unfair

    B. The Republicans already have a plan in place to put JD Vance either in de facto charge or to push Trump out and replace him if he’s elected which is why they’re so serene about his increasingly bizarre rally behavior.

I saw “B.” in Mikey J’s “secret Constitutional Christian with magical plan from God” look when he answered Tapper’s question.

I love this. Under a former employer, where we worked on hospital readmission prevention, I used to arrange that kind of transport for folks our pharmacists thought could use the assistance. Few things about that job made me happier.

Unfortunately, it also gave me a front seat view of one town dismantling their program for lack of funding.

Those are actually phenomenal rates. In Boston, they’re about $1 for the bus, $3 for the train, $6 for the train yonder.

Here’s a really random question, based on the discussion upthread on shrimp and grits (yum!).

On both my recent longhaul flights, the lunch/dinner featured what Delta called “creamy polenta”. It was light and fluffy in a way I’d never had it before — though technically I’d actually not call it creamy! I am usually sort of so-so on grits/polenta, though as I say above, a good shrimp n grits at a good restaurant is great.

Anyone have a clue how to get that fluffy texture? I’ve never encountered it before. I’d love to be able to recreate that.

Mike Johnson successfully got out a whole completely unrelated message, that Kamala Harris is too weak on the world stage (cause woman) by saying that’s what Trump “really meant”.

@NotMax: Any idea what year that’s from? Cagney looks very young.

ETA: 1931. My grandpa might have been taking stills. He retired the following year.

Trump’s ever increasing obvious mental incompetence will lose him some votes. With Arizona, Georgia, and Wisconsin on the knife edge, based on 2016 and 2020 results, that’s good news for John McCain Harris.

@Ksmiami: The good news is Elon is a self stopper.

It’s pretty amazing how society rewards useless idiots just because they go to the correct parties, but such is the world.

    @sab:

    and alligators and humidity.

I have relatives in a rural part of central Florida.  They are afraid to post Harris walz signs.  A restaurant in their area was driven out of business when the place was rented to the local Democratic Party for a meeting.  And Milton did not spare them.

    @Ella in New Mexico:

I am beginning to think, and hear me out, Trump

    A. Doesn’t really want to win the Presidency, just wants to keep making the grift dollars to pay his legal bills and whine about everything being so unfair

Winning is the only way to shut down the federal investigations, plus I’m sure it will make it impossible for NY and EJC to collect any of their judgements.

Michael McDonald (not the Doobies’ singer) on Twitter:

1.3 million Georgians have voted. That’s 26% of the 5 million that voted in 2020, 55% of them are women
In NC, nearly 1 million have voted (they began in-person voting 2 days later than GA), that’s 17% of the 2020 turnout, 52% of them are women
You have to get into the voter reg weeds to appreciate in NC gender is optional on voter reg forms. 0.5% of Georgians have a missing/other record compared to 5.6% in North Carolina If we look at differences in gender turnout women vs. men GA: women +9.5 points NC: women +8.5

In Michigan, 1 million people have voted which is 12% of the 2020 turnout
Women are 56% of those who voted

*the file I use for gender stats is from Friday

In the battleground states where I can produce voting statistics by gender we are seeing robust women engagement. In GA (where I have data I can compare to 2020), levels are similar to 2020 (55.2% women overall of early voters)

My usual caveats apply: we don’t yet know how voting will play out. We still have time to go. I think the best information that can be drawn at this point is the probability of a big polling miss favoring Trump is shrinking. This looks like what Harris needs to be competitive

@WaterGirl: The American oligarchs are really showing their asses this year.

After a Harris win, they are likely to discover that their behavior this election cycle was the proximate cause of the end of Gilded Age II.  Which, for all the pain they are causing right now, will be a blessing.

That is spelled AN ACTUALLY OLD FART.

As in over 3/4 of a century OLD. I’m not the oldest follower of this site, but I’m not all that far off.
