I was at the Harris rally in Atlanta last night. I wasn’t planning on going, but my wife and 12 year old daughter found out we had an invite and told me in no uncertain terms I had no say in the matter.
I’m really glad I went. I find myself getting sucked into the daily maelstrom of news and polls seemingly headed in the wrong direction, so being amidst a diverse crowd of thousands all working towards a common purpose was a balm. The speakers we saw – Ossoff, Usher and Tyler Lee, a high school senior that introduced her – were all great and Harris was sharp, assured and on-point. About a third of the way through her speech, I saw on Blue Sky that Fox had cut away from Trump’s genital discourse and was showing the Harris rally. The contrast between her and Trump could not have been more stark.
Harris said last night that the race was incredibly close, but that we would win. After seeing her in person, after seeing the energy of thousands in this swing state willing to do the work and after the side-by-side with Trump, I think she’s right.

I’m guessing the early vote partisan split might start to freak out some folks, especially Jon Ralston’s highly reliable read on Nevada. But I think any early vote shift toward Republicans is a mirage generated by the cult-like nature of the MAGA crowd. What I see in my town is lots of Harris signs and a smaller number of Trumpers that have gone completely overboard. The photo of the house in Orion Township, MI, in the NYT article on “Door-Knocks, Texts, and Ads, Ads, Ads” is what a couple houses here look like. Totally overboard, but not an index of breadth of support.
I think the cultists will show up early, scare everyone, but the rumbling power of Dobbs and the Harris campaign will overwhelm them by election day.

So far, MVP and her team have done a great job campaigning.
Of course, no campaign is perfect. A poem for VP Harris on her birthday:
You may write me down in history with your bitter, twisted lies,
you may trod me in the very dirt but still, like dust, I’ll rise.
Does my sassiness upset you? Why are you beset with gloom?
Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells pumping in my living room.
Just like moons and like suns, with the certainty of tides, just like hopes springing high, still I’ll rise.
Did you want to see me broken? Bowed head and lowered eyes? Shoulders falling down like teardrops, weakened by my soulful cries?
Does my haughtiness offend you? Don’t you take it awful hard
Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines diggin’ in my own backyard.
You may shoot me with your words, you may cut me with your eyes, you may kill me with your hatefulness, but still, like air, I’ll rise.
Does my sexiness upset you? Does it come as a surprise that I dance like I’ve got diamonds at the meeting of my thighs?
Out of the huts of history’s shame I rise! Up from a past that’s rooted in pain I rise!
I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide, welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear I rise!
Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear I rise!
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave, I am the dream and the hope of the slave. I rise, I rise, I rise.

It is the season in Missouri. Homecoming parades. This week – the University of Missouri. Yesterday I got up at 1:30 a.m., was picked up at 2:30 a.m., drove to Sedalia, arrived at 3:00 a.m., switched vehicles – a truck towing a parade trailer, drove to Columbia, arrived at our first staging area at 4:30 a.m., slept for about 45 minutes on the open bed of the flatbed trailer [see, Josh Hawley (r), resident Missourians know the difference], arrived at the second staging area at 5:30 a.m., photographed the proceedings as the trailer was hitched to the candidate’s truck (the “Eladmobile” – Elad Gross is the Democratic Party candidate for Missouri Attorney General), rode to the assigned parade line-up spot, photographed the trailer/float final assembly, waited for the 8:00 a.m. start – we started rolling later, sat in the bed of the truck and photographed the parade and candidates, returned to the second staging area to disassemble the float and stow it on the trailer, ate lunch with a group of volunteers, rode the original truck towing the trailer back to Sedalia, dropped off a pair of 4 x 8 Elad Gross (D) signs, then proceeded back to Warrensburg to drop the truck and trailer (with stored float parts) at the staging area – in the lot of a private home near the start of next Saturday’s homecoming parade at the University of Central Missouri, drove back to Sedalia to get the first vehicle, dropped the driver off, and arrived back in Warrenburg at 4:30 p.m.
I took over 1100 frames at homecoming. It was a sunny day, good light. A Canon 5D III with a Tamron 150-600 mm lens, and a Canon 5D III with a 50 mm lens. I switched between the two throughout the parade.
The result (with additional links):
Elad Gross (D) – University of Missouri Homecoming Parade – Columbia, Missouri – October 19, 2024

I can’t believe more isn’t being made about TCFG’S dance party playlist…you have a lowbrow person’s version of highbrow music (Ave Maria is classic but he also played Andrea Boccelli who is like pop pseudo opera) and then a bunch of music that codes gay, including The Village People and show tunes. Then yesterday he spent some time talking about men showering with other men and checking out each other’s junk.
I’ve been told that bros like Trump out of cultural affinity but none of that codes to a country music listening pickup truck driving manly man who makes his living with his hands. I am beginning to think, and hear me out, Trump
A. Doesn’t really want to win the Presidency, just wants to keep making the grift dollars to pay his legal bills and whine about everything being so unfair
B. The Republicans already have a plan in place to put JD Vance either in de facto charge or to push Trump out and replace him if he’s elected which is why they’re so serene about his increasingly bizarre rally behavior.
I saw “B.” in Mikey J’s “secret Constitutional Christian with magical plan from God” look when he answered Tapper’s question.

Here’s a really random question, based on the discussion upthread on shrimp and grits (yum!).
On both my recent longhaul flights, the lunch/dinner featured what Delta called “creamy polenta”. It was light and fluffy in a way I’d never had it before — though technically I’d actually not call it creamy! I am usually sort of so-so on grits/polenta, though as I say above, a good shrimp n grits at a good restaurant is great.
