Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When we show up, we win.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Republicans in disarray!

Hey hey, RFK, how many kids did you kill today?

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

The revolution will be supervised.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

I’m more christian than these people and i’m an atheist.

Fear and negativity are contagious, but so is courage!

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

TRUMP: The NCAA has complied immediately. That's good. But I understand Maine — is the governor of Maine here?

JANET MILLS: Yeah I'm here

TRUMP: Are you not gonna comply?

JM: I'm going to comply with state and federal law

T: You better do it bc you're not gonna get any federal funding at all

Mills, who is 77 and term-limited, told Trump “See you in court”. Thanks to reader T for sending this in.

The leader of the opposition is still leading. By the way, she’s someone who gets a shit ton of death threats and is still speaking out:

Medicaid is not for sale.
NASA is not for sale.
The Post Office is not for sale.
America is not for sale.

We have an obligation to resist kings. We outnumber them. And they can be overwhelmed.

The nice thing about the Mills video is that she is in the room with him, telling it to his face.

hey, our snooze media might, just MIGHT, be learning (and maybe even finding part of a vertebrae): Fox News, CNN, others in WHCA write to White House urging trumpov to drop AP ban over ‘Gulf of Mexico/America’ kerfuffle

Dozens of major news organizations, including CNN, The Washington Post and Fox News, wrote to the White House this week urging the Trump administration to immediately lift its ban on The Associated Press, which had been prohibited from attending a number of official press events over the past week.

The White House has said it is blocking reporters from the news service because the outlet refers to the Gulf of Mexico in its articles, rather than “Gulf of America,” as decreed by President Trump in an executive order on Jan. 20.

The letter, which was coordinated by the White House Correspondents’ Association and delivered on Monday, was signed by 40 outlets. It said the decision to bar The Associated Press was “an escalation of a dispute that does not serve the presidency or the public.”

“The First Amendment prohibits the government from asserting control over how news organizations make editorial decisions,” the letter said. “Any attempt to punish journalists for those decisions is a serious breach of this constitutional protection.”

He’s really, really weak.  Keep calling Congress!

    @Expletive Deleted:

I recall seeing video of Capitol Police forcefully removing disability activists from Congress in 2017:

Capitol Hill Police have forcibly removed protesters in wheelchairs from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s office on the same day Republicans released their latest healthcare plan.

ADAPT, a disability rights organisation, staged a “die-in” outside Mr McConnell’s office to protest the legislation, which would generate cuts to the Medicaid services used by many disabled individuals.

Approximately 60 protesters – many of them in wheelchairs – flooded Mr McConnell’s office around 11 am on Thursday. Some made their way inside the office, lifting themselves out of their chairs to lie across the Senator’s floor.

Republicans finally unveil their Obamacare ‘repeal and replace’ bill

The purpose, according to an ADAPT press release, was to “dramatise the deaths” they say the American Health Care Act (AHCA) will cause.

“We’re hanging out there like a ripe cherry to be plucked,” Mike Oxford, one of the protest organisers, told The Independent of the disabled community. “Not only will people lose their freedom, but people will die if they do this.”

Mr Oxford said Capitol Police began following the protesters soon after they entered the Capitol.

“Sixty people in wheelchairs are pretty noticeable,” he said.

Soon after they reached Mr McConnell’s office, Mr Oxford said, officers threatened to arrest those who did not leave of their own volition. When the protestors did not comply, officers began wheeling them out of the area.

One person being rolled out by a police officer called out, “Don’t mess with my Medicaid!” Another walked out of the officer with her hands tied behind her back, followed closely by an officer.

Yet another was pulled from her chair by police officers trying to remove her from the area.

Capitol Police said forty-three protestors were arrested and charged with crowding, obstructing, or incommoding.

All I could think to myself when watching clips of it was, “how could these assholes justify this to themselves”. If I was an officer and I was ordered to forcefully remove disabled people protesting for their medical rights, I’d refuse. It’d have to be at gunpoint for me to do it

A clip posted by The Ebell sounds pretty good. The Ebell is a nonprofit women’s center located in Los Angeles. Its mission statement::

Arts, Culture, Service, Education, Powered by Women.

The YouTube clip is from an appearance at The Ebell last December 2nd by Hakeem Jeffries and Brian Tyler Cohen:

Democratic Representative Hakeem Jeffries and Brian Tyler Cohen. Now on YouTube.

Jeffries and Cohen discuss the themes expressed in Jeffries’ book, The ABCs of Democracy. Event organizers describe the book:

Equal parts inspiring and urgent…paints an alphabetical road map for a brighter American future, and warns of the perils of taking a different path.

The ABCs of Democracy is based on the speech Jeffries made on the House floor in January of 2023, after Kraven McCarthy’s prolonged Speaker election. Jeffries adopted a classic rhetorical device from Black Churche sermons by alphabetizing his presentation.

Hunter Schafer says passport lists sex as ‘M’ after Trump executive order
Actress said marker was changed even after she put ‘F’ on her application

CBC News · Posted: Feb 21, 2025 3:12 PM PST | Last Updated: 22 minutes ago

American actress Hunter Schafer said she was “shocked” to find the gender marker on her passport listed as male, a forced change that comes after the Trump administration declared it would only recognize two genders.

Schafer, one of the most visible transgender actresses in Hollywood, said she picked up her new passport on Thursday to find the gender marker written as “M”, despite her having listed female on her application.

“I was shocked. I was shocked. I don’t know … I just didn’t think it was actually going to happen,” she said in an eight-minute TikTok, holding up her new passport.

At least some of our media betters are starting to change the narrative:

    Axios reports:

Local LGBTQ-serving community organizations are among nine nonprofits that sued the Trump administration Friday over executive orders targeting transgender and nonbinary people. President Trump ran his campaign on an incendiary anti-trans platform that promoted false claims about the community, which make up 1.3% of U.S. adults.

Meanwhile, maybe DOGE can take a look at the massive waste and inefficiency involved with HHS’s memory holing any references that LGBTQ+ people exist.

HHS is wasting workers’ time and taxpayer dollars on “a witch hunt to find any content deemed ‘bad.” Specifically, people who work on HHS websites are spending days scanning those sites and any documents they share in search of a list terms like “gay,” “sexuality,” “non-binary,” “inclusion,” “queer,” and “gender,” potentially so they could be later removed to comply with Trump’s executive orders attacking DEI in the federal government.

“The most obvious issue to me about this list is that it’s being done in the name of ‘efficiency and saving money.’ It is not efficient to take engineers off their work to scan old content for any keywords this new administration hates. The bigotry is astounding,” the source who is familiar with the work and who asked to be anonymous because they were not permitted to speak to the press, told me.

Meanwhile, for parks supervisors, the uncertainty continues. Two who asked for anonymity because they fear retaliation said they had received permission to start rehiring seasonal employees. They said they are trying to act fast, because nobody knows when the guidance from the administration might suddenly change again.

“Human resource officers in federal agencies, and particularly the parks, probably have the worst job in America right now,” said Tim Whitehouse, executive director of the nonprofit Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility. “They’re dealing with unprecedented levels of chaos.”

Police responded, found out that an employee had triggered it accidentally. Contractor has been having a few drinks in the office, so they tell him not to drive. He promises not too.

Cops go across the street to do the paperwork for the call and see the company van drive away. They follow it and arrest the guy standing at the counter of a pizza place. He said that the employee drove the van there and he rode his bike there. Even produced a witness who saw the guy riding his bike, somewhat unsteadily. We acquitted.

Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency put a $1 spending limit on most credit cards belonging to employees and contractors of the General Services Administration—a critical agency that manages IT and office buildings for the US government—along with at least three other federal agencies. Similar restrictions are expected to roll out to the entire government workforce soon, according to several sources familiar with the matter.

Yeah, this is fucked. It’s aimed at humiliating federal workers, pretty obviously.

When my relatively tiny agency sent out email telling everyone to cancel their travel to headquarters next week, I didn’t know why. Then I read the news. I infer that the travel cancelation is a precautionary measure from our leadership, so that travelers won’t be stranded.

My accountant retired last year so I’m venturing into doing my own taxes again after 25 years and…I thought it was fun. I’m using the IRS’s Free File Fillable Forms and it’s been so much easier and clearer than I was fearing. It’s so handy the way the necessary forms and instructions are linked from the main 1040 form and then the data from the schedules/worksheets gets populated back into the 1040 form. I’m not 100% sure I did it  all correctly (though I’m feeling confident), but it was just the kind of fiddly task that I enjoy.

I think back on summer camp a few years back, when the Webb telescope had only gone up a few months before, and we were just getting those first astounding pictures. I showed some of the pictures to a group of four year olds, and one girl— her name was a cognate of “star”— exclaimed in wonder, “I never..”

I loved telling her, “none of us have ever seen this. This is brand new for everyone.” We were joined in our wonder, in that moment of looking at those wildly detailed, unexpected photos sent back from the Webb.

    @Goku (aka Amerikan Baka):

79 million people are on Medicaid. The massive GOP cuts will cause hospitals and nursing homes to shut down nationwide and cause a major disruption to the insurance industry. EBT cuts will screw farmers and grocery prices will rise. Recipients will have to spend more of the rest of their income on food, consumer spending will fall. There will be a downward spiral of job loss over many sectors. It won’t be pretty. There will be no savings, it goes without saying.
