Just one of the best days ever today- I was right about a new front coming in and sensing it in my eyes and sinuses, and it was 70’s, no humidity, and with a breeze. Mowed for about six hours, and was really careful to apply sunscreen and to make sure I drank my usual five to six liters of water while cutting. These are the days when you get burnt or people become heat casualties because they think it’s cool so the sun isn’t that bad and you’re not gonna dehydrate in this weather.
My sister Annie informed me today that she was doing wordle or some copycat and got it in the first guess, which is great, but then told me that the word she got was “fluff.” The fact that she blew three of the first five letters in her first guess on the letter “f” infuriated me for reasons I know are not rational, but god damnit what kind of insane person goes around living their life like that? And the fact that she was rewarded for that bullshit makes it even worse.
I don’t have much else to say I just wanted to bigfoot Anne Laurie in a reasonable amount of time.

It’s 69° in Chicago. I have Hot Hot Hot running through my head. And yes! my ass is involuntarily shaking!
HeleninEire
LOL. Hi John Cole. You just got bigfooted on your own blog.
I LOVE it here. 😆
Ramona
My aunt in Australia gets Wordle the first time often! Either she’s a witch or playing every day gives her a working memory of the five letter words already used and she’s somewhat synced with the Wordle word generator.
Tim C
Since it’s an open thread.
Wyden for Senate MAJORITY leader.
toine
I once got NYMPH in 1 guess…
satby
It was glorious here. I mowed too, first reasonable day in two weeks; but the grass and weeds hardly grew in the heat either. Then I spent a couple of hours just sitting in my rocker on my porch with an iced tea enjoying the weather even with the air quality alert. Makes me really look forward to autumn.

We have ADT cameras. I hate to see myself on camera. I used to be model thin, but after twenty-five years of cooking in a happy marrige, we both look like beached whales. I am the cook so that is my fault.
Suzanne
@toine: I got TRAIN in one guess once. Felt goddamn fantastic for the rest of the day.

My only first guess success: LEARN

It’s A Beautiful Day – Hot Summer Day.

@Tim C: Too old
prostratedragon
@RevRick: And anyway, would he have the same freedom to do things like his Epstein investigation?
Jackie
@Tim C: @RevRick:
And he’ll be older by the time Dems retake the Senate. I love Wyden; he’s my Senator neighbor, but I’ll put a premature plug for Booker :-)

I am so methodical that I start Wordle with the same three words in the same order, fifteen common letters, and I often use all three words before even trying to guess the real word. So I’m the opposite of John’s sister, I guess. Recently lost a streak of 562.
Gary K
For anyone who plays Connections, I achieved a Reverse Rainbow with no mistakes.

@Jackie: He needs to announce his retirement so he can be replaced in the next election. Others who need to hang it up are Ben Cardin, Dick Durbin, Richard Blumenthal, Ed Markey, Tom Carper, Peter Welch, and Mazie Hirono. Also Independents, Agnus King and Bernie Sanders. Our gerontocracy is what is killing our party’s image.
prostratedragon
@RevRick: Durbin is retiring.
Another Scott
@RevRick: Alsobrooks replaced Cardin.
:-)
Best wishes,
Scott.

OT Art supply update: I got a Parallel pen and I am loving it.
J. Arthur Crank
@Gary K:
Did you make a conscious effort to try and do this, or was it luck? I could imagine using a pen and paper to jot down obvious easy connections and to play around with different combinations without entering anything, but I am not that obsessive.
Jackie
@prostratedragon: One down, several to go. I tend to agree with @RevRick:, many need to retire and enjoy their grandkiddos and in some cases, their great-grands. Especially those in solidly Blue states.

Eastern Ohio, not far from West Virginia, and the weather was glorious today. We were mostly inside, but every time we went outside it was “Wow, what a wonderful day!”
Dog spent half an hour just sunbathing and rolling around on the grass. And she swore to us before she went out that it was desperately urgent. No urgency at all. Just sunbathing.

@dnfree:
My longest is 98. If I was more thoughtful and had any concentration left, most of my misses could have been avoided by by guessing a word that has the letters that cover the possibilities when a few different letters in a blank spot can give legal words. For example, ___atch could have a b, or a c, or an l, etc. So guessing “black” on the fifth guess could nail the last letter or at least greatly narrow down the choices. However, as noted above I can’t concentrate on much of anything anymore, so I hardly ever do this.

@RevRick: Sherrod Brown wants to run again, and until he jumps in to either the governor or the Senate race everyone else is afraid to announce.
I very much love Amy Acton. I think she saved tens of thousands of lives during Covid. But this is Ohio, inhabited by Ohioans and they rarely vote a woman into any federal or statewide office.
I hope he makes up his mind soon so that we have strong candidates running in both seats.
prostratedragon
@Jackie: Long as there’s a good chance of keeping the seat till the next time.
Ramona
@toine: Ooh! Well done! Great word! If I’d guessed NYMPH and that were not the word, I’d conclude that Wordle was mediocre at thinking up words.

For all the Deadheads out there in jackal land the Grateful Dead channel on Sirius Xm is casting all three shows live from San Francisco this weekend. First set was awesome!
Jackie
@prostratedragon:
Absolutely. That’s why I stressed SOLID Blue states ;-)
Ramona
@sab: We bought our Arlington VA townhouse from somebody who works/worked for Sherrod Brown. Got junk mail here once for John Thune before he was Speaker.

Beeyootiful day today! High of 80.

By god, do I feel this! No one who acts this way should ever win at anything.
I sometimes amuse myself in Connections by trying to get one word from each category in my guesses. I’m not very good at that game, but I love it for showing me every day how messy and weird English is.

Cole and I were born under the same sign.

@Ramona: That is sadly funny. Waste of Republican postage.

@NotMax: Youtube doesn’t work on my Nook, but I do remember that song now. Thank you. Shows how old I am. I think I was in high school or middle school when I first heard it.

@Jackie: Yeah…. probably. Just happy he’s fighting. And yeah, he’s been in congress a long time. I’m 50 now and I was 17 when he was in the House and did an open house at my High School. .. it’s been a minute.
Jackie
@Tim C: I truly appreciate our Congress members who’ve been there, fought for us, and have done good by us. Now I want them to help find the next generation to continue the fight. Their experience and wisdom are valuable, BUT they need to recognize their time in office is limited and start supporting the future.
The Lodger
@RevRick: You need to update your list, Rev. IIRC, Carper, Cardin, and Welch are already out of the Senate.
The Lodger
@The Lodger: should have waited for another two comments to appear. No one caught Carper, who was succeeded by Lisa Blunt Rochester.
