I feel like Sherrod Brown had to have seen some good data if he really is getting involved in that Senate race
www.axios.com/2025/08/04/sherrod-brown-ohio-senate-race-husted— David Dayen (@ddayen.bsky.social) August 4, 2025 at 6:23 PM
Former Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) is interviewing campaign managers for a 2026 comeback bid, a clear indication that he’s preparing to jump into the race to defeat Sen. Jon Husted (R-Ohio), according to three people familiar with the matter.
Why it matters: Brown would be another marquee recruit for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), who made two trips to Ohio this summer to persuade Brown to enter the race…
Zoom in: While Ohio has been viewed as a stretch target for the party next year, Brown’s entrance into the race would immediately boost Democratic chances.
– Brown, a three-term senator, lost Ohio by under four percentage points in 2024, when Vice President Harris lost to President Trump by 11 percentage points.
– If he makes a final decision to enter the race, Brown would join former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, who announced his Senate campaign last week, as two of Schumer’s top prospects to eat into the GOP’s margins in 2026…
Zoom out: Schumer knows that Brown is likely his best shot at running a competitive campaign in Ohio next year, as the state moves away from the Democratic Party.
– Brown, 72, would face Husted, 57, who was appointed to fill the vacant seat created when JD Vance resigned from the Senate to serve as vice president…
Well that's about the absolute best possible news.

Ohio slides into very competitive pretty easily if Brown is running in an off-year that's Dem favored.

I think people who are complaining that Sherrod Brown is old should stfu and realize that a turnip is better than a continued republican majority, and if he's the best and strongest candidate in Ohio (he is) then fucking put him on the ticket.

Reminder:
Y’all chose this over Sherrod Brown. Come on, Ohio. Really?

Sherrod Brown was on the Senate Banking Committee and skeptical of crypto. Bernie Moreno was/is a luxury car dealer with questionable campaign finance practices, on the ballot solely to favor crypto, and no interest in helping other than rich Ohioans.

I don’t care that he’s old, but I also don’t care about anyone else’s age.
Deeper problem is the tiny bench in Ohio and other red states.
schrodingers_cat
@Baud: He was the first D senator to approve of T 1.0 tariffs and stab Biden in the back publicly last June. I am not as great a fan of his as many of BJers are. That said any D is better than any R. Yes even Manchin was better than his R replacement.
Yep running away from a D president, something both Ryan and Brown did never really works.
John Sterling
Hey, don’t blame me. I voted for Sherrold. And would be thrilled to do so again.
Baud
@schrodingers_cat:
Right, and it’s Ohio. Once again, the whole bench thing.
Another Scott
@Baud: It’s not the bench, it’s the voters. And the GQP system and laws they pass that prevents voters from voting. (As we know, they wouldn’t pass those laws if they thought they could win without them.)
Incremental progress, baby.
Go Sherrod, Go!!
Best wishes,
Scott.
They Call Me Noni
I have an off topic question. Was watching Rachel last night and one of her topics was all the capitulation by law firms and universities. I’m cleaning the garage today and taking a break to eat a bite and in scanning the news I read a headline where T has cut a deal with Murdock over the WSJ article. I didn’t read any further because I’m eating and don’t want to gag, but where does all this “settlement” money go? In T’s pocket I assume. Do the payments go to a PAC and then into his pocket?
Geoduck
Sigh. The Shaitgibbon is evidently spending his morning wandering around up on the roof of the White House. (Really. No joke.) It’s just.. he does things that would have gotten Biden removed from office by the end of the day and it doesn’t even make the mainstream news.

@They Call Me Noni:
I think (IIRC) it goes to a fund for the “trump Presidential Library.” IOW, into the trump family’s bank accounts.

I would love to see Sen. Brown give it another go. He can win that seat.
Splitting Image
@Baud:
There are a lot of negative consequences to gerrymandering, and this is yet another of them.
Gerrymandering in states like Wisconsin helps the G.O.P. turn 45% of the vote into 60% of the seats, giving themselves control of the chamber, but it also works in deep red states to turn 60% of the votes into 90% of the seats. 10% of the state legislature in gerrymandered districts means the minority party has no bench when a federal seat opens up.
They Call Me Noni
@Geoduck: I hope there’s a crowd below chanting “jump!”
Ohio Mom
There aren’t that many headlines that can take my breath away in a good way. Really, how often do I see such good news?
Sherrod is smart, well-read, and kind. I was so sad when he lost, I am so happy I might get to vote for him again.
They Call Me Noni
@Cliosfanboy: Thank you.
A President who does not read is collecting bribes for a library. What’s he gonna fill it with? Coloring books?

@Geoduck: I am surprised the Secret Service allows this. I hope Trump gets a bad sunburn.

The Library of Congress runs on a budget of (before the current round of gutting) less than $900M/year.
For a modest endowment, by modern billionaire standards — say, $20B — you could literally create a new Library of <whatever> that would rival any historical institution.
suzanne
I like Brown, and if the Ohio jackals here think he has the best chance for a D to win, that’s awesome.
Professor Bigfoot
I don’t care that he’s old.
I just hope he doesn’t run another “I’m not REALLY a Democrat” campaigns.
Of course, if he does run he gets my money and my vote.
But I hope to hear a fiery union man this time.
(I wonder if he’ll be held to the same standards as Hakeem Jeffries? Nah, probably not)
Baud
@Ohio Mom:
There are others out there with him, based on a Blue sky picture I saw. I assume they’re surveying the site of the grand ballroom Trump wants.
Betty Cracker
@Geoduck: Saw a pic of Trump wandering around on the roof over at Bluesky. Hope he falls off and lands face-first in the newly paved former rose garden.
Professor Bigfoot
@schrodingers_cat: All of this. I was disgusted with Tim Ryan’s antics, and Sherrod playing the same thing is disappointing.
But who knows? Maybe he can persuade these gullible-ass white people to vote for him, a white dude!
One can hope.
Cliosfanboy
@They Call Me Noni: A complete collection of “Barely Legal” is my guess.

Speaking of Ohio, there was a news article talking about what a huge cash advantage Ramaswamy has. I guess he could be Ohio’s next governor.

Made me LOL.

@Professor Bigfoot: He pretty much has to run a strongly pro-union campaign because that’s his base. But we all know that a bunch of unions have less than appealing positions on a number of issues. Even sticking purely to economics, the manufacturing unions love tariffs.

Brown is fine; we can count on him for Labor and standing up for workers. I agree that running away from the president of your own party is cowardice, but not seeing a lot of strength on the bench in OH. That said, mayors can be strong senate candidates if there’s not too much “I hate you!” intracity rivalries going on in the state…
But anything that expands the map is something I’m excited about. A strong top of the ticket in OH might help state-wide party building and start turning OH back a little bit. Build the base. Grow the map. Fuck the GOP.

@Baud: It’s legislative term limits. We can’t develop a bench because we don’t have wingnut welfare like Republicans.
sab
@Professor Bigfoot: Yes yes yes. Brown last time ran a Tim Ryan campaign.
Steve LaBonne
@sab: Brown outran Harris by IIRC 7 points.
sab
@Steve LaBonne: Acgtually it was getting much better under Biden.
Steve LaBonne
@sab: Been saying this for years. Term limits are a stupid person’s idea of smart policy.
Steve LaBonne
@sab: Relatively speaking perhaps but Ohio Republicans had long since fucked the state up beyond the ability of any Federal government to do more than help around the edges.
Professor Bigfoot
@sab: All I can report is what I saw with my own Mk I eyeballs: every damn where I went there was new construction.
Went out for a drive among our local small towns (visit sunny downtown Bolivar!) and EVERY ROUTE I CHOSE had road construction going down.
That construction has pretty well died, now.

@Professor Bigfoot: Hey, thinking is hard! It hurts mah head!

Bernie Moreno is afraid to visit New York, Chicago, and now maybe Cincinnati? Does he have any idea how stupid he sounds? Of course, when he was the GM of a Mercedes dealership in Boston, he took away the free customer coffee. He did that right after he started charging the sales staff for coffee and decided to make them pay for their customers’ coffee as well.
I bought an AMG Benz at that dealership. My salesman was great, damn did he have some Bernie stories. BTW, after we spent a shit ton of money on our new car, he didn’t even bother to thank us or shake my hand. My car dealer father would have tossed him out on his ass.
Steve in the ATL
@Jager: hope you got a good deal. Saw one at a dealership here last week that was marked all the way down to $178k!
Gvg
@Cliosfanboy: if we get an honest democrat in office after trump and a good justice department, THEN we can check where the money went, and put a few people in jail. Seriously, I am sure the family will grift, but I think that would be something provable.
JML
@Steve LaBonne: truth. term limits are a GOP scam. they ran on them and then immediately ignored their self-imposed deal. Making talented effective people leave office is now and has always been a GOP play.
The absolute dumbest? 1 term for governor in VA. insane.
Jager
@Steve in the ATL: It was a 99, so they were a lot more reasonable; that, and it was a 4-door model. Great car, didn’t have to change the original plugs until just over 100 thousand miles. We kept it for 6 years. I think you ad you saw was for the AMG GT Coupe, great car, stupid money.

Best case scenario for Sherrod would be if the independent leaning GQP in Ohio had a challenger to Husted (personally, I love to see Josh Mandel take a stab at him). There are plenty of MAGAts and independents who are not happy with DeWine and his crony appointment. Having someone other than the OH DNC running opposition ads in the primaries against Husted would definitely help Sherrod in the general. What we most have to prevent is some Horseshoe lefty, green party, Kucinich baby, Berner Bro influencer from running a bunch of misinformation ads against Sherrod because he’s an old or part of Genocide Joe’s regime or whatever the vibe/grift of the moment is. I’m not kidding about this. The third party bullshit in Ohio has been responsible for Ohio diving head first into the MAGAt end of the Red conservative pool.
We had excellent voter Dem turnout in NEOH prior to Karl Rove voter suppression and gerrymandering shenanigans. Now we have lackluster turnout at best in Cleveland/Cuyahoga County due to candidates like Ryan and Fisher abandoning the AA base in NEOH. Akron/Summit County is still solid but Dems have zero bench with federal experience in Ohio except for Sherrod. And he’s a proven, excellent legislator. This is not the time to FA and go with some vibe candidate that has no statewide name recognition who will only end up being a worse candidate than Ryan or Senator than Fetterman.

But I’d bet you are correct – he’s collecting bribes. Not that he’d call them that but still. He can’t run again, he’s an old fart and aging out fast, I’d bet he ran for 2 reasons, the pay (he gets paid more per hour doing this job badly than he ever been paid or made, in any way, shape or form before. OK that and the legal protection.)

A lot of it is farm land. And I doubt that has changed a lot. Now it’s been a bit of time since I lived there so I’m not sure how much has changed but a lot of that farm land has been farm land for a VERY long time. And I suspect that it will remain farm land.

@JML: Ohioan here. Agree. I think he can beat Husted. Local political blogger The Rooster regularly calls Husted names based upon his stupidity. Like, has a bowl of pudding where his brain is supposed to be. And Trump is not on the ballot. I believe Dems will be highly motivated and my Indivisible Central Ohio group will mobilize big-time.
