Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Not loving this new fraud based economy.

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

This is dead girl, live boy, a goat, two wetsuits and a dildo territory.  oh, and pink furry handcuffs.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Disappointing to see gov. newsom with his finger to the wind.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

If rights aren’t universal, they are privilege, not rights.

Beware of advice from anyone for whom Democrats are “they” and not “we.”

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Hell hath no fury like a farmer bankrupted.

The republican caucus is covering themselves with something, and it is not glory.

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Good News for Democrats Open Thread: Sherrod Brown

I feel like Sherrod Brown had to have seen some good data if he really is getting involved in that Senate race

Former Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) is interviewing campaign managers for a 2026 comeback bid, a clear indication that he’s preparing to jump into the race to defeat Sen. Jon Husted (R-Ohio), according to three people familiar with the matter.

Why it matters: Brown would be another marquee recruit for Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), who made two trips to Ohio this summer to persuade Brown to enter the race…

Zoom in: While Ohio has been viewed as a stretch target for the party next year, Brown’s entrance into the race would immediately boost Democratic chances.

– Brown, a three-term senator, lost Ohio by under four percentage points in 2024, when Vice President Harris lost to President Trump by 11 percentage points.

– If he makes a final decision to enter the race, Brown would join former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, who announced his Senate campaign last week, as two of Schumer’s top prospects to eat into the GOP’s margins in 2026…

Zoom out: Schumer knows that Brown is likely his best shot at running a competitive campaign in Ohio next year, as the state moves away from the Democratic Party.

– Brown, 72, would face Husted, 57, who was appointed to fill the vacant seat created when JD Vance resigned from the Senate to serve as vice president…

Well that's about the absolute best possible news.

===

Ohio slides into very competitive pretty easily if Brown is running in an off-year that's Dem favored.

— Schnorkles O'Bork (@schnorkles.bsky.social) August 4, 2025 at 6:20 PM

===

I think people who are complaining that Sherrod Brown is old should stfu and realize that a turnip is better than a continued republican majority, and if he's the best and strongest candidate in Ohio (he is) then fucking put him on the ticket.

— Schnorkles O'Bork (@schnorkles.bsky.social) August 4, 2025 at 6:36 PM

===

Reminder:

Y’all chose this over Sherrod Brown. Come on, Ohio. Really?

— Sherrilyn Ifill (@sifill.bsky.social) August 2, 2025 at 8:43 PM

===

Sherrod Brown was on the Senate Banking Committee and skeptical of crypto. Bernie Moreno was/is a luxury car dealer with questionable campaign finance practices, on the ballot solely to favor crypto, and no interest in helping other than rich Ohioans.

    I don’t care that he’s old, but I also don’t care about anyone else’s age.

    Deeper problem is the tiny bench in Ohio and other red states.

    @Baud: He was the first D senator to approve of T 1.0 tariffs and stab Biden in the back publicly last June. I am not as great a fan of his as many of BJers are. That said any D is better than any R. Yes even Manchin was better than his R replacement.

    Yep running away from a D president, something both Ryan and Brown did never really works.

    @Baud: It’s not the bench, it’s the voters.  And the GQP system and laws they pass that prevents voters from voting.  (As we know, they wouldn’t pass those laws if they thought they could win without them.)

    Incremental progress, baby.

    Go Sherrod, Go!!

    Best wishes,

    I have an off topic question.  Was watching Rachel last night and one of her topics was all the capitulation by law firms and universities.  I’m cleaning the garage today and taking a break to eat a bite and in scanning the news I read a headline where T has cut a deal with Murdock over the WSJ article.  I didn’t read any further because I’m eating and don’t want to gag, but where does all this “settlement” money go?  In T’s pocket I assume.  Do the payments go to a PAC and then into his pocket?

    @Baud:

    Deeper problem is the tiny bench in Ohio and other red states.

    There are a lot of negative consequences to gerrymandering, and this is yet another of them.

    Gerrymandering in states like Wisconsin helps the G.O.P. turn 45% of the vote into 60% of the seats, giving themselves control of the chamber, but it also works in deep red states to turn 60% of the votes into 90% of the seats. 10% of the state legislature in gerrymandered districts means the minority party has no bench when a federal seat opens up.

    The Library of Congress runs on a budget of (before the current round of gutting) less than $900M/year.

    For a modest endowment, by modern billionaire standards — say, $20B — you could literally create a new Library of <whatever> that would rival any historical institution.

    Brown is fine; we can count on him for Labor and standing up for workers. I agree that running away from the president of your own party is cowardice, but not seeing a lot of strength on the bench in OH. That said, mayors can be strong senate candidates if there’s not too much “I hate you!” intracity rivalries going on in the state…

    But anything that expands the map is something I’m excited about. A strong top of the ticket in OH might help state-wide party building and start turning OH back a little bit. Build the base. Grow the map. Fuck the GOP.

    Best case scenario for Sherrod would be if the independent leaning GQP in Ohio had a challenger to Husted (personally, I love to see Josh Mandel take a stab at him). There are plenty of MAGAts and independents who are not happy with DeWine and his crony appointment. Having someone other than the OH DNC running opposition ads in the primaries against Husted would definitely help Sherrod in the general. What we most have to prevent is some Horseshoe lefty, green party, Kucinich baby, Berner Bro influencer from running a bunch of misinformation ads against Sherrod because he’s an old or part of Genocide Joe’s regime or whatever the vibe/grift of the moment is. I’m not kidding about this. The third party bullshit in Ohio has been responsible for Ohio diving head first into the MAGAt end of the Red conservative pool.
    We had excellent voter Dem turnout in NEOH prior to Karl Rove voter suppression and gerrymandering shenanigans. Now we have lackluster turnout at best in Cleveland/Cuyahoga County due to candidates like Ryan and Fisher abandoning the AA base in NEOH. Akron/Summit County is still solid but Dems have zero bench with federal experience in Ohio except for Sherrod. And he’s a proven, excellent legislator. This is not the time to FA and go with some vibe candidate that has no statewide name recognition who will only end up being a worse candidate than Ryan or Senator than Fetterman.

    A lot of it is farm land. And I doubt that has changed a lot. Now it’s been a bit of time since I lived there so I’m not sure how much has changed but a lot of that farm land has been farm land for a VERY long time. And I suspect that it will remain farm land.

    @Steve LaBonne:

    Term limits are there to help with the possibility that a rather shitty person will be elected and make EVERYTHING a lot worse for a long time. We do have a democracy here, even though on occasion it seems like we’ve lost the keys.

    @JML: Ohioan here.  Agree.  I think he can beat Husted.  Local political blogger The Rooster regularly calls Husted names based upon his stupidity.  Like, has a bowl of pudding where his brain is supposed to be.  And Trump is not on the ballot.  I believe Dems will be highly motivated and my Indivisible Central Ohio group will mobilize big-time.
