Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Every one of the “Roberts Six” lied to get on the court.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

“Perhaps I should have considered other options.” (head-desk)

’Where will you hide, Roberts, the laws all being flat?’

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. keep building.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Our messy unity will be our strength.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

When we show up, we win.

We still have time to mess this up!

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

If you still can’t see these things even now, maybe politics isn’t your forte and you should stop writing about it.

So very ready.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

Oppose, oppose, oppose. do not congratulate. this is not business as usual.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

We Only Need Two More Republicans To Sign – Call, Call, Call

Less than two minutes in, they said they only need 2 more Rs to sign the discharge petition.

If the Rs were smart (we know they aren’t!) they would ALL agree to sign and then T couldn’t punish all of them!

Just 2 are needed.  Let’s do this!

Link with contact info.

These women are brave enough to stand up there and announce that they will be creating and publishing their own lists.  The least EACH OF US  can do is make a few phone calls.

Let this from Nukular Biskits be your inspiration.  If we all do this, we might just end up with 2 more Rs signing.  Even one more R would perhaps encourage another one!

Called my 2 US Senators and US Representative (all Republicans). Results are as follows:

US Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith: No answer, went to voice mail. I can’t tell you the last time a live person answered the phone in her DC office. I have to wonder if she’s instructed her staffers to screen calls.

US Senator Roger Wicker: Asked what position/statement the senator had on Donald Trump ordering the US military to engage in hostilities against a civilian vessel in international waters. Was told the senator had provided no statement on that issue. I reminded staffer that this was a serious issue, Wicker knew these questions were coming and that he was doing his staffers a grave disservice by failing to provide them with at least an anodyne statement.

US Representative Mike Ezell: Asked if the representative was going to sign on to Discharge Petition 9 (Rep. Thomas Massie’s forcing the House to vote on release of the Epstein documents). Was told the representative had provided no statement on that issue. As with the staffer for Sen. Wicker, reminded staffer that this was a serious issue, Ezell knew these questions were coming and that he was doing his staffers a grave disservice by failing to provide them with an answer for constituents.

If your Congressperson is a Republican, you have my sympathies, but do call! Trump said he would release ALL of the Epstein files – why won’t he? Why is he protecting pedophiles? Is HE a pedophile?

@TONYG: That’s not what calling them is about. When a topic causes the phones to ring off the hook, staff take notice. They certainly tell their bosses, which, as you intimate, won’t affect most of them. But, the staff do react in other ways, like tracking how Mace, Massie, Boebert, and the other one fare from this and whether outcomes over the rest of the week suggest that their boss should quietly stop returning calls vs taking calls from them, and vice versa for the cohort that continues to protect pedophiles. Think of it as a form of soft power.

I called my MAGA rep this morning, and after reading this post, I called again just now.

I pointed out to the staffer that the prez* had said he would release the files, and that he should do what he said he would do.

I also said that the prez* is calling this a “democrat hoax,” and that it is manifestly not a hoax.

As Chief Oshkosh in comment 3 pointed out, the R reps need to get calls, even if they are never going to do the right thing. And that’s what made me call again just now.

Capitol Hill reporter Jaime Dupree is tracking the discharge petition. He said that as of 3 p.m. 205 House members had signed it. So about a dozen Dems hadn’t yet.

Also, in what Dupree described as an “embarrassing” vote for Republican leadership, a motion to table a bill censuring Democrat Monica McIver )NJ) passed 215-210. The censure bill would also have kicked Rep. McIver off the Homeland Security Committee. Five Republicans voted to table the measure while two voted “Present.” Now I want to find out who the Republican defectors were.

I’m surprised Republicans are signing this discharge petition at all considering the hard press Trump2.0 has thrown down on this issue.  Really what this signals (loudly) is that Trump is all over the Epstein files and there are many details of him with underage girls.  I’m also wondering, when that finally comes out (as it will), will MAGA folk care?  I suspect a few might, but my bet is on most of ’em making some bullshit excuse and try to sweep it under the rug.

I called my R representative this morning after reading Nukular Biskit’s comment. It went thusly:

Me. Please tell the Congressman to sign on to the Epstein files discharge petition.

Staff. I’ll pass that along. Is there anything else the Congressman can help you with?

      Me, politely. No

Me, in an alternate time line. Really? Really? You want to know what he can help me with??? How much time you got?

(This is probably the least important thing I’ve called about all year.)

I called Dan Newhouse’s DC office and a staffer answered right away. I said Newhouse is on public record for wanting transparency and releasing the Epstein files, so why hasn’t he signed the discharge position? Staffer stammered and stuttered before saying he wasn’t allowed to speak for Newhouse. I reiterated that if Newhouse truly wanted full disclosure, he would sign the petition. And since the staffer couldn’t give an official statement on Newhouse’s behalf, could I please speak to Congressman Newhouse directly? The staffer DID take my name, address (proof of constituency) and phone number. I won’t hold my breath!

House republicans follow through with their attempts to rewrite history:

House members voted Wednesday to officially establish a new panel to investigate the events around the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol.
It’s the latest chapter in the Republican effort to rewrite the history of the events at the Capitol on that day, when a violent mob stormed the building as lawmakers attempted to certify the results of the 2020 presidential election in favor of Joe Biden over Donald Trump.
      *snip*
Language to create the new, GOP-led select subcommittee was buried in a larger “rule” that included a host of other provisions, including a formal approval of the House Oversight Committee’s investigation into Jeffrey Epstein. It will fall under the purview of the House Judiciary Committee and be chaired by Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.), who will, in his new role, have unilateral authority to issue subpoenas.
He plans to use his gavel to review security and intelligence failures around the attacks; many GOP lawmakers have blamed then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) for allowing the Capitol to be breached in the first place and have in general downplayed the significance of the event.
Loudermilk will preside over a group of eight lawmakers to be appointed by Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.); Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) will be able to consult on at most three of those members. In an interview, Loudermilk said he was sending Johnson his picks, and while the list had not yet been finalized, he pointed to Rep. Troy Nehls (R-Texas) as a potential selection.

@Nelle: I say NO. Premies, even after they’ve “caught up” are way more susceptible to catching whatever. My youngest grandson spent two months in the NIC unit and is a strapping 14 yr old now, but his lungs are always susceptible to colds, flu, RSV… And he’s fully up to date with vaccinations.

What does baby’s daddy think? Hopefully he’s fully supportive of his baby son’s health and wellbeing.

Veteran Capitol Hill reporter Jaime Dupree posted this at 4:19 pm:

As of 4 p.m., the Massie/Khanna discharge petition on the Epstein files has 206 signatures (202D, 4R). Here are the 10 Democrats who have not signed yet:

Eric Swalwell (CA),  Jimmy Gomez (CA), Pete Aguilar (CA), Ed Case (HI), Dan Goldman (NY), Jim Himes (CT), Mikie Sherrill (NJ), Lloyd Doggett (TX), Vicente Gonzalez (TX), and Henry Cuellar (TX).

I expect 8 of these Democrats will sign but haven’t gotten around to it.

Reps. Gonzalez and Cuellar might not; both represent districts that voted for Trump last year, and Cuellar is under federal indictment for bribery. His trial is scheduled for February of next year.

Ed. Jamie Dupree is a good follow for people using Twitter. He posts on BlueSky but only sporadically. Dupree also publishes on SubStack under “Regular Order.” He’s in his 39th year covering Congress.

If the new map drawn by Teclxas Tepublicans stands up to court challenge, both Congressmen have little chance for reelection. That litigation is likely to run into next year.

Here’s what healthline.com/health/new-baby-vaccination-guide/top-vaccines-all-grandparents-need#pneumonia has to say about the wide range of vaccines grandparents should have. I would say stand firm, but I don’t have kids, this is not my child, and these are not my in-laws.

If she can’t prevail, she can try mitigating by insisting on COVID testing or better yet one that tests for COVID , Flu, and RSV. Provide them herself if necessary.

What am I missing here?  Mace, Boebert and MTG have signed the discharge petition.  What’s their political calculation in doing this?  Okay, they’re all white women GOPers with a national reputation for batshit, insaneness and full-on Trump supporters on most days of the year so at first glance, you’d not think they’d go out on a limb on this.

      I then saw this:

      yahoo.com/news/articles/three-republicans-defy-trump-back-140907988.html?guccounter=1

that has statements from Mace and MTG and holy shit, they have a moral compass on this.  Nothing else mind you but those statements sound like they come from normal people, not, well, them.

Would be interesting to know what their constituent input (calls and emails) has been.

Congressional Republicans should certainly be reminded as often as possible about Trump’s dishonesty— but I have no idea how to convince one of anything. MAGAworld runs on different rules.

We’re all clever and passionate, and hope we can figure out how to be convincing, but that’s not what calling Congresscritters is about. No matter what, they’re never going to hear your compelling  individual argument, they’re going to get a tally of how many people called about the issue and which side they were on.

So don’t overthink it, just call and tell them that. As you say, there is no convincing argument, there is only contributing to there being enough calls that voters seem like more of a threat to their continued well-compensated seat-filling than whatever wackadoodle primary challenger Trump might cough up.

Greene is a rational actor in my opinion. Her biggest danger is a primary from the right. Greene’s decision to sign might reflect her appraisal of Trump’s clout in her Northwest Georgia district.

And Boebert’s dumb as a post, so who knows why she signed

Ed. But another commenter may have it right when they said all three women likely have experience with sexual assault. A lot of women do, and that could be why the Epstein story won’t die.

This is… intriguing, shall I say?

A leaked memo obtained by the Daily Mail “sheds light on the shady dealings of Corey Lewandowski, a powerful advisor to Kristi Noem at the Department of Homeland Security and Trump’s former campaign manager.”

“The documents bring to light a history of questionable links to other nations, arrests and substance and alcohol abuse.”

I doubt any of us subscribe to the Daily Mail, so we’ll have to wait for further leaks elsewhere? We know Lewandowski is no Boy Scout, but since he and Noem have a very unsecret secret relationship, I wonder if something new has come to light.

@Jackie: here’s a web archive version for you:

Cover-up right under the president’s nose

      Some excerpts:

In one case he is accused of receiving $50,000 directly from the Chinese Communist Party as well as payments from Israel‘s Benjamin Netanyahu‘s Likud Party.

It also raised questions about his numerous run-ins with law enforcement, including allegedly having unwanted sexual contact with a woman in Las Vegas.

Despite the litany of cases marking his record, Lewandowski did not reference them in his background disclosure form for his role at the DHS.

It sent alarm bells ringing across the highest levels of government amid fears it could leave Lewandowski open to foreign interference.

The chief security officer at the DHS had compiled the memo earlier this year, but was forced out just weeks later.

Meanwhile superiors allegedly buried the findings and Lewandowski still has top-secret clearance through his job as de-facto chief of staff to Noem.

Some of his crimes and charges have already been reported, but the buried memo is a new one, I think.  And the article lists some charges and crimes I haven’t read about before.

The article also has screen shots of the security memo.

Who would leak this memo? Hmmm.

Does MAGA/Qanon support having the Epstein files released or not? Why are “they” going after MTG for wanting the files released? Why is Loomer suddenly targeting MTG? I thought Loomer also wanted the files released? Why isn’t MAGA and Loomer going after Mace and Boebert for signing the petition? I can’t keep up with the nuances of what the rules are regarding the Epstein files with these lunatics.

If they’re not vaccinated at all, ask for a history for each person in the household of how and when each person has had COVID. Whether they tote it up and realize it’s a lot, or say “dunno, we don’t pay attention”, or tell you to eff off, any response will be instructive (to you and hopefully to someone in their household).

@WaterGirl: Yes.  That gives me ‘copy link to post’.

Gives me just the URL unlike Twitter’s embed.

Anyway, I can live with it.  (Nothing you can do about it anyway 😁)

      Thanks.

I’m also wondering, when that finally comes out (as it will), will MAGA folk care?  I suspect a few might, but my bet is on most of ’em making some bullshit excuse and try to sweep it under the rug.

@Jackie: I think Laura Loomer and Marjorie Taylor Greene have a longstanding personal feud going. But maybe Loomer will get around to slagging Mace snd Boebert too. I might check out Loomer’s Twitter feed. It actually can be interesting in a weird way.

And if I had more high-speed data I could watch the next episode of her podcast, “Loomer Unleashed.” But I wouldn’t.

      That, I get.

It’s the MAGA/Qanon as a whole targeting MTG for going against her for supporting releasing the Files, but not Mace or Boebert for supporting the Files being released.

And I thought they ALL supported the Files being released?

Hate to rain on your parade but there is only ONE phone call that matters to these people and the fucking little bitch has been on the phone all day calling each and every Republican to threaten them if they sign on.

All we have is the hope that at least two more of them are sick enough after hearing these women’s stories to do the right thing.

According to Jamie Dupree, Rep. Stanton has signed the petition. At least, Dupree did not list Stanton among the ten Democrats who had not signed as of 4 p.m. today.

      He’s on the list

@WaterGirl: Imagine if they come and the baby gets Covid. She would never forgive herself, I’m guessing.

And I’m guessing you’re wrong. My conjecture is that she would come up with any and every possible reason it might be someone else’s fault, no matter how unlikely or illogical – including the child’s own parents.

MAGAt Thuglicans’ R-words are Resentment, Rage, and Retribution (and the most important of them is the last). There’s no place in their lexicon for ones like Remorse, Regret, or Responsibility.

@Nelle: That baby’s life and future are worth so much more than the inlaws’ delicate fee-fees.

She should hold her ground and keep herself and the baby safe.

Also, baby’s Dad should be standing with her and holding the line. If the in-laws really love  their grandchild and truly want to see the baby, they will do the right thing. If not, well, screw them. It really is a matter of life and death.

My niece and nephew refused to let my father hold their newborn, because he was being a Trumpy idiot and refusing to wash or sanitize his hands. My niece basically said, “I love you, but iI love my baby more, and it’s my job to keep her safe. Behave reasonably, or don’t come near her.”
