Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“They all knew.”

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

Dear media: perhaps we ought to let Donald Trump speak for himself!

Shut up, hissy kitty!

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

Dear Washington Post, you are the darkness now.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

With all due respect and assumptions of good faith, please fuck off into the sun.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Beware of advice from anyone for whom Democrats are “they” and not “we.”

Painting of Rebellion Drawn Up By The Thoughts I Think

I didn’t post last night because I got totally sucked into a show on Apple tv (after I cancelled by Disney account, which you should, too) called Chief of War. It’s the kind of show that was just absolutely built for me- historical fiction about something I know nothing about (mid 1800’s Hawaii), shirtless Jason Momoa (which means all sorts of scantily clad gorgeous women vying for his attention), palace intrigue, battles, etc. This is my crack.

I know nothing about the history of Hawaii, so this means while watching, I can pause and google things and read about the history and read about the things the show mentions, like the use of candlenut oil in rituals, which led me down a candlenut rabbit hole. And same with everything else. By the time I am finished with the show I will be as much an expert on the time period as the google and youtube epidemiologists were during covid.

That’s the way it has always been, though, isn’t it? In the past, we only had books, and plays, music, art, and the oral tradition. Through that, people would share thoughts, ideas, visions, humor, deal with grief and sadness, try to find meaning and understanding. Now we have all the old mediums, as well as the new ones technology afford us. It’s how we share ideas and culture, it’s how we get to know each other and helps shape the lens with which we view the world, and changes who we are and how we think of ourselves and others.

And that, folks, is why the Trump administration and other fascist regimes are so desperate to censor and suppress art and information. Their platform is based on lies, and the easiest way to cut through lies is to mock them, hold the liars in contempt, and provide people with truth and alternatives. And it goes deeper than that- controlling what you say means they want to control what you think, which means they do not view you as a person, but as an obstacle or an enemy.

We can not let them win.

With Hulu, you get to cancel Disney AND Fox.

Yes, it’s time for cancel culture that will make these entertainment companies cry.

Make sure their quarterly earnings drop like a stone. Half this country is still liberal and can still do things that will make companies cry.

Speaking of historical fiction, John – on netflix, they have Warrior. Like you I sometimes  like to look things up. The time frame though was around the time they were going to pass Chinese Exclusion act. The Irish were pissed at at the Chinese for being cheap labor. So there is all these politics. It’s super fascinating – of course, copious amounts of sex and nudity since brothels are involved.

Today The View topics covered yesterday’s congressional hearings with Kash Patel and Susan Monarez. Obviously Jimmy Kimmel was taboo on the ABC program. Those five women should have walked off on live TV, led by Whoopie.

We are in this crisis partly because over the past 10 years, people from across the political spectrum decided that nitpicking democrats to death was more necessary than stopping republicans from destroying everything they touch. Republicans took control of our media, and now they are destroying it.

As for entertainment, let’s see: Amazon, Paramount, Disney/Hulu all have issues.  Who knows, maybe folks will start going to their libraries & picking up books to read. Or listen to.  Or movies to watch.  Libraries are amazing & I could get behind that.

Again, somebody is canned after on air saying a thing that is likely true, attracting the ire of the FCC head.

And Kilmeade still has a job and no significant consequences for opining, on air, that the handicapped should be put to death. Still has a job, Fox still has their broadcast licenses.

      msnbc.com/opinion/msnbc-opinion/fox-news-host-kill-homeless-brian-kilmeade-apology-rcna231369

IMO people should be raising holy hell, because apologizing in front of the class after the principal got involved does not erase what he did, to the approval of the two others, all of whom were opining that the Libs need punishment for doing the thing that was actually done by the guy Kimmel accurately described.

So I’ve (and most of Hawaii) have been watching Chief of War.  It’s pretty accurate. some of the dates (the arrival of John Young on the scene was a bit early but he was a real historical character) and locations (The day of Spilled Brains was an actual event but it happened on Maui look up the Olowalu Massacre) Other than that I’ve found only two outright in-accuricies (The cremation in ep 1 Hawaiians would stash the bones on a cliff somewhere the burial in ep 8 is more accurate.  Also the women’s dresses are more modern.  Women in Hawaii went around topless back then).

If you are more interested in this period of Hawaiian history Here is a great youtube video of the unification of the Hawaiian Islands here: youtube.com/watch?v=yIfgic6W09Y

BTW the season that is up  (and I hope there is a 2nd and 3rd season that will be filmend) is just the story of king Kamehameha taking down his elder brother on the island of Hawaii.

COVID vax will be available in Oregon after yesterday’s state pharma board meeting. It took us a little while to override the federal vaccine bs due to the way Oregon’s applicable laws were written. We’ll get our shots soon. Statewide Covid 2024 vax uptake was only 20% so there may be a lot of sick folks around here anyway.

Netflix is still politically neutral? Then I have a streaming suggestion for them. You’ve surely noticed how the government is trying to erase memories of our slavery history, and the other day I saw a list of the best miniseries and number one was Roots. Huh. Roots isn’t streaming anywhere and it premiered almost fifty years ago. About time to bring it back, I’d say. It was a huge deal when it first came out. Maybe time for a memory refresh.

I was covering for a teacher on Monday, and a couple of the students asked me what I thought of the Charlie Kirk murder, so I told them the truth.

“No one deserves to be murdered,” I said, “but you are under no obligation to pretend Charlie Kirk was someone he wasn’t. Charlie Kirk said horrible things about black people, women, gay people, Jewish people, and just about anyone else who didn’t look and think like he did.”

Then I picked up a mini bobble-head of Bob Ross that was sitting on their regular teacher’s desk. “Y’all know who this is?” Most of them did. “You know how, when people remember Bob Ross, all they mention is the ‘happy pine trees’? Yeah–when you pass away, you want to be remembered like Bob, not like Charlie.”

We (haole olds, living in Hawaiʻi for over 40 years) have been enjoying and appreciating Chief of War for what it is. We also have longtime connections to the local performing arts community here and we are THRILLED to see so many folks we know featured  or participating in this high quality production. Yes, the story line diverges from actual history but those who want to know more can find out. The fact that itʻs a Hawaiian language production is a huge thing as well. Really hoping for Seasons 2 & 3.

Just regarding Disney+.  I had signed up , or rather added it to my Hulu subscription, so I could watch Andor. I’ve just gone to cancel the Disney piece, and big surprise, they’ve gone and made it hard to just tick the box that says “cancel”. So I cancelled the whole damned thing.

As it happens, Disney+ ran a sponsor ad on Facebook in my feed this am. There were 1K+ comments saying “I stand with Jimmy!” or “I’m cancelling my subscription!” It showed up again later, only Disney had shut down comments. So they’re getting the message.

Besides — or perhaps in lieu of — canceling Disney and Hulu, if your ABC affiliate is Nextstar or Sinclair, call the local station and say you will no longer watch any programming. Also monitor their advertisers and let local ones know that you will not buy from them. It was Nextstar and Sinclair that helped lead to Kimmel’s cancelation.

Former President Barack Obama slammed ABC for pulling Jimmy Kimmel off the airwaves.

Said Obama: “After years of complaining about cancel culture, the current administration has taken it to a new and dangerous level by routinely threatening regulatory action against media companies unless they muzzle or fire reporters and commentators it doesn’t like.”

He added: “This is precisely the kind of government coercion that the First Amendment was designed to prevent — and media companies need to start standing up rather than capitulating to it.”

Dear lord, I know Obama has SS protection for life, but I hope he trusts them implicitly!

RawStory has an article quoting just a fistful of reactions suggesting violence directed at Obama following his comments regarding Kimmel’s suspension. I can’t link to it directly, but here’s the title:

“‘The dominos are falling Hussein’: Trump fans snap at Obama after Kimmel defense.”

@Goku (aka Amerikan Baka): Let me guess – Target.  Meanwhile, 500 other companies that have been subjected to boycotts are still moving right along as if nothing happened.  Anheuser-Busch.  Amazon.  Wal-Mart.  Unilever.  Microsoft.  Sony.  Smith & Wesson.  Hell, depending on who you ask, Target isn’t even going through it that hard.

You can burn energy on boycotts because of principles and trendiness, or you can burn energy on making sure the situations don’t arise in the first place.  I’m tired of fighting for pounds of questionable cures when ounces of guaranteed prevention were right there, staring people in the face.

@Hkedi [Kang T.Q.]:So I’ve (and most of Hawaii) have been watching Chief of War.

That sled race down a lava flow was the most badass thing I have seen in a long time.  Was that real?

Remember when everyone was cancelling Amazon Prime what, 6 or 7 months ago? I see the problem as follows: Apple, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, OpenAI, …, none of these companies provide any real benefit to people.  They are not there to make our lives better, they don’t employ all that many people (except, in a sense, Amazon), they are there simply to produce billions of dollars in revenue for people we shouldn’t trust.  Any of them will throw any of us under the bus any time there is a clear economic advantage to doing so. Right now, the biggest threat and opportunity for them is DJT.  Fuck with him, and your revenue stream will be disrupted in a variety of ways large and small.  Do what he says, then maybe you lose a few pissed off boycotting liberals, but the majority of your revenue is intact and you may pick a few sweet federal contracts.  This is a no-brainer for any of them.  I’d say it’s worth our effort to try boycotting the lot of them.

John/everyone else: if you’d like to learn a bit more about Hawaii here’s a suggestion: Aloha Rodeo: Three Hawaiian Cowboys, the World’s Greatest Rodeo, and a Hidden History of the American West

In August 1908, three unknown riders arrived in Cheyenne, Wyoming, their hats adorned with wildflowers, to compete in the world’s greatest rodeo. Steer-roping virtuoso Ikua Purdy and his cousins Jack Low and Archie Ka’au’a had travelled 4,200 miles from Hawaii, of all places, to test themselves against the toughest riders in the West. Dismissed by whites, who considered themselves the only true cowboys, the native Hawaiians would astonish the country, returning home champions—and American legends.

An unforgettable human drama set against the rough-knuckled frontier, David Wolman and Julian Smith’s Aloha Rodeo unspools the fascinating and little-known true story of the Hawaiian cowboys, or paniolo, whose 1908 adventure upended the conventional history of the American West.

What few understood when the three paniolo rode into Cheyenne is that the Hawaiians were no underdogs. They were the product of a deeply engrained cattle culture that was twice as old as that of the Great Plains, for Hawaiians had been chasing cattle over the islands’ rugged volcanic slopes and through thick tropical forests since the late 1700s.

Tracing the life story of Purdy and his cousins, Wolman and Smith delve into the dual histories of ranching and cowboys in the islands, and the meteoric rise and sudden fall of Cheyenne, “Holy City of the Cow.” At the turn of the twentieth century, larger-than-life personalities like “Buffalo Bill” Cody and Theodore Roosevelt capitalized on a national obsession with the Wild West and helped transform Cheyenne’s annual Frontier Days celebration into an unparalleled rodeo spectacle, the “Daddy of ‘em All.”

The hopes of all Hawaii rode on the three riders’ shoulders during those dusty days in August 1908. The U.S. had forcibly annexed the islands just a decade earlier. The young Hawaiians brought the pride of a people struggling to preserve their cultural identity and anxious about their future under the rule of overlords an ocean away. In Cheyenne, they didn’t just astound the locals; they also overturned simplistic thinking about cattle country, the binary narrative of “cowboys versus Indians,” and the very concept of the Wild West. Blending sport and history, while exploring questions of identity, imperialism, and race, Aloha Rodeo spotlights an overlooked and riveting chapter in the saga of the American West.

We’re watching that show as well and agree that it’s really good. Definitely high on the recommend list.

‘Chief of War’: Jason Momoa Reveals Scariest Part of Filming Traditional Hawaiian Holua Sled Race (VIDEO)

@Hkedi [Kang T.Q.]: I was reading about this time period, and saw that the writers were trying to condense down about 20 years of history into a manageable show. What I really like about this show is that it’s indigenous people telling this story. From the actors to the writers room, and all the rest of the supporting crew, they’re all Pacific Islanders telling their story. It’s really amazing and brings to mind Robert Redford’s hand in bringing Dark Skies to life.

@Marcopolo: One, it’s Eeyore.  Two, the Target CEO failed upward – he’s now on the company’s Board of Directors:

Fiddelke, the company’s 49-year-old chief operating officer and former chief financial officer, will succeed Brian Cornell effective Feb. 1. Cornell, who took the helm of the cheap chic retailer in 2014, will transition to the role of executive chair on Target’s board of directors.

Again, depending on who you ask, this move was in the works for longer than this year’s boycott.

Focus on getting people to the polls.  That’ll have far more of a long-term effect than actions that most companies have baked in as part of long-term contingency plans.

I’d love to understand if there are ideas around fast on/off switches rather than the scorched earth plays people are doing now.

Dropping Disney+ isn’t going to get them to change I imagine. And I don’t even think it’ll be noticeable TBH. It feels at best a short-term dopamine hit for doing the right thing, even though if / when there’s some good content, oh well (granted, we’ve all watched WAY too much TV, so maybe being forced to do something else is a good thing. Unless it’s spend more time on social media.)

It feels to me that what Trump has shown is that Republicans can and will do things to hurt companies, so companies bend the knee. Democrats won’t, so companies are free to do whatever regardless of whether it makes Democrats happy or not. End result is companies do what Republicans want.

Maybe for our friends in California, have California actually do something that would get Disney’s attention?

My cousin’s Hawaiian-born wife is a blend of the Filipino and 4 other Asian bloodlines. Her Filipino great-grandfather was hired by a dumb/unaware white pineapple farmer as contract labor for a round-trip boat ticket and three years of work. When the contract was over, her grandpa and his pal sold their boat tickets, rented a place to live, and went to work on the docks in Honolulu.  The farmer had no idea Filipinos were American citizens. Hawaii is an amazing place. By 1940, one out of 3 marriages was interracial. We were invited to a large dinner party last year, and the guests were a living, breathing United Nations. We just bought a retirement condo there.

You can burn energy on boycotts because of principles and trendiness, or you can burn energy on You can burn energy on boycotts because of principles and trendiness, or you can burn energy on making sure the situations don’t arise in the first place. .

I canceled my Washington Post subscription the other day. Must’ve taken a whole three minutes. Really didn’t burn much of my precious energy.

Other than keeping Trump from being elected in 2024, I’m not sure what you mean by “making sure the situations don’t arise in the first place.” And people here put a whole lot of energy into that, but here we are anyway.

And listen: regardless of what we could or couldn’t have done in the past, WE ARE HERE NOW. We have no DeLorean, we have no Tardis, the past is done, and here and now is the only time and place we can act in.

Please feel free to share your bright ideas of what we could do NOW and in the near-term future that we aren’t doing. But saying we should have done X, Y, or Z to not be in this situation to begin with is really useless. We can’t go back to 2024 and do those things. We’re here now. Brilliant ideas that can be done in the here and now are welcome. Feel free to share.

And you say that, as if there wouldn’t be a mob-brawl of competition for the privilege!

@Baud: And companies have learned to try to wait out enforcement actions, for when Republicans will settle for pennies on the dollar (assuming Trump doesn’t Ashli Babbitt them a few mill for the horror of being investigated). It’s truly evil to do this, and yet, “everyone does it, and, if we failed to try to do it, we wouldn’t be representing our client’s best interests!”

I’m sorry, do I sound bitter? WTF are you tasting my sounds for anyway? (jk)

@debit: I’ll never tell you, that you shouldn’t. Me, well, I only have cable internet – not cable TV. So cancelling Disney+ means losing a huge source of entertainment, and, I’m severely disabled – if I could read, instead of watch TV while writhing in pain, I’d utilize the free library and try to help it as best as I could. But for me, some of the boycott voices fall flat.

Still: even if it falls flat, I’d never suggest you shouldn’t boycott, and feel pride over it, for your beliefs.
