Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Shut up, hissy kitty!

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Their shamelessness is their super power.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty. ~Thomas Jefferson

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Fight them, without becoming them!

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Donald Trump found guilty as fuck – May 30, 2024!

People are weird.

Human rights are not a matter of opinion!

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

Trumpflation is an intolerable hardship for every American, and it’s Trump’s fault.

“woke” is the new caravan.

Trumps own videographer tripped the safety. Trump’s team screwed up with teleprompter.
It’s all Trump. His team made problems to get riled up about.

For those of us with Republican governors, US Senators, US Representatives, remember:

DO NOT LET THEM OFF THE HOOK!

They are enabling Trump by refusing to hold him accountable for even the most outrageous lie or abuse of power.

Call their offices. Email them. Write letters.

And, when given the opportunity, pointedly but factually question/criticize them in public (including on social media, directly tagging them).

Fox News leads the way in calling for violence:
Longtime Fox News personality Jesse Watters called for the bombing of the United Nations headquarters in New York City on Sept. 23 following teleprompter and escalator malfunctions that plagued President Donald Trump‘s visit for the General Assembly earlier that day.

      …

The Fox host claimed that U.N. staffers “sabotaged” the escalator and the teleprompter, calling the malfunctions “an insurrection and what we need to do is either leave the U.N. or we need to bomb it.”
      …
“[The U.N. headquarters] is in New York, though, right? Could be some fallout there. Maybe gas it?” Watters continued as The Five hosts could still be heard laughing.

“Let’s not do that,” The Five co-host Dana Perino, 53, retorted off-camera.

Watters, 47, continued: “Don’t gas it. Okay, but we need to destroy it. Maybe can we demolish the building? Have everybody leave and then we’ll demolish the building.”

And they were upset that people weren’t mourning Charlie Kirk.  But here they are – arrest! gas! kill! demolish! – because a freakin’ escalator stopped while Trump was on it.

This is dictator shit, pure and simple.

      On a more minor note:

Yanno, in 65+ years of riding escalators, I’ve been on a few when they stopped for whatever reason.  It’s no big deal if you’re a healthy person.  Kind of a nuisance walking the rest of the way up because the stairs are taller than regular stairs, but that’s about it.

So what I’m hearing is Trump and his fan club admitting that he’s an invalid. Good. About time we had this conversation.

I took my dog, Lucy, to the vet yesterday, and the problem was dehydration.  On one hand, yay! a fixable problem.  On the other, huh?  Because there is always water in the blue bowl in the kitchen.  The vet said maybe she didn’t feel well, got out of her routine of drinking water, never got back in.  I have no idea.

She got iv fluids at the vet yesterday, and she goes back this morning for more blood work.  But she is much better.  I filled up one of my large mixing bowls full of water for her, and she seemed to really like that, so maybe that will be the new water bowl in the kitchen.

Great news about your poor dog!

Some dogs just like *big* drinking bowls.  We always had weeny little (~15lb) dogs, but our first beloved fella trained us well.  We used those big bowls designed for party-sized salads or ice cubes… and put out more than one, so they had the luxury of ‘choice’.

@eclare: I always use the huge stainless mixing bowls for my cats. It seems to me that the small bowls water gets “stale” too fast and I sometime see a film of dust or stuff on top of small bowls. All my pets have preferred to drink from very large bowls given a choice and I always have more than one in case they decide one doesn’t taste right or I forget or something. I also try and dump and refresh fairly often.

it’s challenging because my current batch of cats like to play in water. Not typical cat behavior. They stand in the bowls and dunk toys. So cat hair in their water bowls…plus toys to dry off. But they want clean water to drink!

I take DC’s metro system in to work on a daily basis and wind up walking up or down escalators that aren’t working all time. I had no idea I was taking my life into my hands by entering a “ fatal funnel” on the regular. I mean I guess that makes me one of the bravest people on the planet.

There was an important meeting Tuesday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, between Trump and leaders from seven Arab and/Muslim nations: Egypt, Jordan, Saudia Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE; and Turkiye, Pakistan and Indonesia. Ankara-based Clash Report gave a summary:

Trump presented the first U.S. plan to end the Gaza war: release of the hostages, a permanent ceasefire, gradual Israeli withdrawal, a postwar Gaza administration without Hamas, an Arab peacekeeping force, and Arab funding for reconstruction.

Axios‘s Barak Ravid reports on this in an article titled, “Trump’s Gaza plan gets support from regional leaders.” There’s a sign-in wall though.

There’s not one for a Times of Israel article that covers much of the same ground. It’s titled:

Trump presents comprehensive plan to end Gaza war to Muslim leaders

Participating countries welcome proposal, while stressing they oppose any Israeli occupation of Gaza, displacement of Palestinians, or annexation of the West Bank.

My sense is that the latter points are not a negotiation position, but instead reiterate assurances given by Trump and his team* at the meeting. That’s something we’ll find out more about in coming days

Something else we’ll find out about is whether Hamas and Israel will agree. White House envoy Steve Witkoff has a back channel to Hamas by way of Israeli Gershom Baskin, so it’s possible Hamas has agreed already. Baskin negotiated a large prisoner swap in 2011 and has since maintained his contacts with Hamas leaders.

As for Israel, we may find that out Monday, when Prime Minister Netanyahu will visit the White House.

This link to the TOI article might work:

      timesofisrael.com/trump-presented-comprehensive-plan-to-end-gaza-war-in-un-meeting-with-muslim-leade…

      * The TOI article has a picture taken at the meeting. It shows a U-shaped table arrangement. Trump is seated at the head table with Turkish President Erdogan on his right. Leaders on his left include Jordan’s King Hussein and Qatari Emir al-Thani.

Marco Rubio is seated immediately to Trump’s left, at his elbow so to speak; special envoy Steve Witkoff is seated behind Rubio, looking over Trump’s left shoulder, while Susan Wiles is seated next to him.

It seems Spanburger is angry because Winsome Sears has exposed her plan to put men in locker rooms with little girls. She’s angry because her plan to allow kids to change gender without their parents’ knowledge will be frustrated by Winsome Sears. Spanberger is angry because she is lying about her “Woke Washington posse’s” plan to *transform* Virginia’s schoolchildren, and Winsome Sears has caught her out.

@Anyway: Melania Trump got to meet a classier set of people at the UN than she’s accustomed to at the White House, like Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa yesterday. A sharp-dressed man.

It’s not unusual for spouses to attend the Fall UN meeting. For intance, Mrs. Zelensky and Mrs. Erdogan are there. They set up their own meetings on issues of interest to them.

Melania may get to meet with Emine Erdogan today, if her hubby brings her to the White House. I’m hoping Emine wears her cat glasses.

@Gin & Tonic: The meeting between Presidents Zelenskyy and al-Sharaa and their delegations sounds like it could have been very interesting. I think their two nations have not had formal contacts since 2014. There were reports that Ukraine provided assistance to al-Sharaa’s rebels when they toppled the Assad regime last December. That might account for the big smile on al-Sharaa’s face when he greeted Zelenskyy.

Rex Huppke in his USA Today commentary called it “stair-orism.”

I, for one, can’t remember an escalator ever stopping or breaking down before wokeness came along.

It’s clear to me that Republicans and key figures in the right-wing media are laser-focused on the things that matter most to the American people. Our country is under attack by dark forces hell-bent on forcing President Trump to ascend stairs on foot and possibly forget which words to use when he’s giving a speech insulting our allies.

To remind Americans how precious functioning escalators are and to memorialize this awful day, I hope the president and his team quickly release a line of understated hats for $39.99 that read: “9/23 – Never Forget!” It’s the only reasonable thing to do.

What is really weird is that there were already news articles out on Wednesday quoting White House staff admitting who actually was responsible for the malfunctions.  We discussed it in the comments for the past two days.  And then the comms team and Trump started this counter argument blaming the sinister plot to force Trump to walk up an escalator.

Anyway, a quote from when he was a UPI stringer in Atlanta:

“Although Lester Maddox and I got along most days, I have the distinction of being thrown bodily from his office by Lester himself when I asked a question he didn’t like at a news conference.”

Ken Klippenstein at his substack yesterday actually asked the friends and acquaintances of Joshua Jahn what might be his motives to shoot detainees at the ICE facility.

On the off-chance the shooting wasn’t what it looked like, I reached out to people who knew the gunman, 29-year-old Joshua Jahn. Three who knew him since at least middle school agreed to speak to me on the condition that I not name them, corroborating their friendship with photos and other records. Their accounts paint the picture of someone with a vaguely libertarian bent who despised both major parties and politicians generally (including Trump) but who didn’t engage with politics beyond that. He preferred edgy humor, video games and the message board 4chan, all of which he became increasingly steeped in as he withdrew from social life as well as their own friendships several years ago, they said.

None of his former friends believed that the “ANTI-ICE” inscription could possibly be sincere, feeling such a serious political statement was anathema to who Jahn was. His humor was deeply ironic, often offensive and aggressive to the point of alienation.

“He was most certainly an edgelord, an irony guy,” one friend said. (Edgelord is online-speak for someone who likes to espouse edgy, nihilistic views). Asked about the inscription on the bullet, the friend said: “Josh was an edgelord who wanted someone to get blamed. I think he tried his best to write something goofy … to rile people up.”

Another friend showed me a Facebook post describing how Jahn had flooded his friends’ comment sections with rape jokes — “playful shock humor,” the friend said.

      . . .

4chan, the anonymous message board where provocation and irony are the coin of the realm, was apparently one of Jahn’s favorite haunts. His abrasive humor is where his friends’ opinions on him diverge the most, with some describing it as amusing but others as grating — especially as his online persona bled into real life.

“I mostly stopped talking to him when he took his 4chan/irony stuff into daily interactions,” one friend told me. “He was becoming unbearable … once he dropped out of college he had no obligation to be social and none of us reached out due to his edgelord behavior.”

I wasn’t able to find anyone with insight into Jahn’s more recent views, something that his friends said was unsurprising given his withdrawal from social life over the past few years.

It actually wasn’t working initially, when they first moved on to full-throated trans bigotry after the legal regime they imposed against gay people mostly collapsed. It took years of pushing this and, even then, they have found exactly one way of framing the question that garners them any sympathy, women’s sports.

Point is, I don’t think this is a strategy, they just really hate queer folk of all sorts.

Because otherwise he should have more people after him and not really be able to enjoy meals at restaurants being out in public, etc.  Or am I wrong?

And he and the Republicans in Congress are using recissions, left right and center, so it’s not even like  hammering a budget and making awful shitty concessions makes any fucking sense, because these clowns renege on their deals anyways.  Plus isn’t DOGE still running around doing bullshit?

I saw that.  It makes zero sense to do this.

They’re not going after Republican operatives or Trump because they run the risk of being beaten, jailed or thrown into untraceable deportation centers.

Kamala Harris has no government position or pull in the federal government now; doesn’t have secret service protection  (which Trump yanked early and I’m not sure what she’s doing for private security now).

For similar reasons,  I don’t think these protesters would show up at the Atlanta Book Festival to protest anyone there (link to brochure)

Like Charles Schumer who is the current Senate Minority Leader, and promoting his book.  Yossi Cohen, Yaakov Katz, and Eli Sharabi are also promoting books.  (There’s John Kasich, Douglas Murray, John Grisham, among others).

Yossi Cohen is Rahm Emanuel’s colleague at Centerview Partners, Rahm’s ex-embassadorship gig, and an ex Mossad director.

They’re not going to risk getting on the radar of Israeli intelligence that way.

@Professor Bigfoot: Kamala’s blackness doesn’t count because she’s a cop and too pro-Israel etc.  I’ve told this story before, but fuck it, I’ll tell it again:

I once attended a small meeting with NAACP elders, a Black Civil Rights attorney, a Jewish Civil Rights activist/attorney (who literally stood outside Fannie Lou Hamer’s house with a shotgun as the Klan circled it back in Mississippi, back in the day), a Black police reform activist and a couple White Progressives™/BernieBros.

The topic of the meeting was whether or not we should protest at a local event honoring a beloved Black community servant who had worked for the city of Pasadena for decades, in order to keep pushing the City over a terrible incident of the PPD profiling and then beating a Black, Altadena resident.  Our police reform group had been notoriously white for a long time and we were trying to bring in more actual black voices to guide us.  The White Progressives™ were insistent that we do the protest.  The Black members of our coalition were like:

“No, this is a terrible idea.  Not the right time.  Not the right event.  Not a good look.  He’s a beloved member of our community being honored and it will look terrible for a bunch of white activists to disrupt that.”

The White Progressives did NOT take it well, basically accusing the Black Elders of not caring about police violence!!  And then stormed out in a huff.

Moral of the story: White Progressive respect for Blackness is very quickly abandoned the moment that Black People disagree with them.  And then you see the low-key Progressive version of racist condescension come out.  We see it all the time with Jeffries, Kamala, Obama etc.  I know this is nothing new to your eyes, but it would be nice if more of My People would be aware of this bullshit.

@Belafon: Edgelord shit posting isn’t exactly right wing politics but it operates on a sort of South Park depressed nihilism that lineups far more comfortably with the right especially the modern right and it’s abandonment of any principle beyond “I want and you are awful for stopping me from getting what I want”.

I’ve been waiting for this and unfortunately I suspect this is just the beginning of a wave of this that will be exploited by the right and totally not understand or explained by more traditional media.

During dry weather, and particularly during hot dry weather, I keep a small concrete mixing tray (black plastic, like 2 feet by 3 by 6 inches) full of water outside, as a watering hole. Birds and a couple of neighborhood cats drink from it. (Also, some insects.)
