@Castor Canadensis: While withholding rent because of unsafe/unlivable conditions is generally okay in the US, each state tends to have specific rules about the way to do it. It usually requires giving notice and putting the money in an escrow account. Failure to follow these rules and still withholding rent can be grounds for eviction. It is important to check what your state’s rules are before taking action.

The GOP has had 8 years (since Trump took office in 1/20/17) to come up with any sort of viable replacement for Obamacare, let alone a better one, and they haven’t come up with anything better than what amounts to selling junk health insurance across state lines, governed by the laws of whichever state has the most lax laws and regulations covering insurance companies. They talk big about free-market private enterprise solutions as better, ignoring that the whole impetus for Obamacare in the first place was that outside of Medicare and Medicaid, health insurance pre-Obamacare was private enterrpise, free-market, in which there are only incentives to cover people who are healthiest and least likely to make expensive health insurance claims. And if you contracted a difficult condition, the insurers were incentivized to find grounds (e.g. preexisting condition, lifetime benefits, etc) to crop you like a hot rock the first nanosecond they could.

So it has been about 15 years now at the ACA has been in effect. Or at least law. Since before it passed and was signed into law the Republicans have been saying we can do it better cheaper cover more people. Considering that Obamacare was really Romney care and patterned after the Republican version of a healthcare plan the statement that they can even do it better is kind of interesting. Like infrastructure week their better cheaper health Plan is always 2 weeks away. What they have are some talking points and the closest we got to detail was when Romney was running. After you analyzed what he said it was basically go back to what we had before anything was passed. Lord knows we have plenty of room to improve on what we’ve got – that is building on what we have not dumping it and trying to start from nothing again. Left to their own devices the Republicans would not even eliminate coverage caps or allow people with pre-existing conditions to get insurance again.
Seriously, the Republican position is that rich people should get health care and poor people should die. Those in the middle class will become poor trying to stay alive and then they can die. And they think that really isn’t obvious by now.

Peale
@Kathleen: Honestly, I have to keep reminding myself that 86% of of LGBTQI+ voters voted for Harris. Its just that that remaining 12% is hardcore.
If you had told the 25 year old me that in 30 years, the Secretary of the Treasury would be a gay man, the head of one of the major broadcast network’s newsrooms would be a lesbian, even the GOP would be taking the advice from a gay billionaire on who should be VP, and instead of making a big show of returning the checks of the Log Cabin Republicans, the GOP would deploy them to heckle performances at Kennedy Center…I’d have said…nope. Dream on.
But its so damn dystopian now.
Aziz, light!
I’m in favor of Trump being awarded the prize posthumously.
Professor Bigfoot
@dm: Yes, but that gets settled when you register.
Once you prove who you are and it matches the name of the registered voter, it should be enough, but, you know.

If/when Trump doesn’t win the Nobel, is there an over/under on how soon we start hearing about taking Greenland again?

“We don’t have anywhere to keep this ammo. What should we do with it?”
“I have an idea.”

@Professor Bigfoot: In the state of Texas, a passport is insufficient to prove you are a citizen for the purpose of getting a drivers license. I had to go back with my birth certificate.
Interesting Name Goes Here
@Peale: Dystopia is trendy now.
I fear the inevitable wake-up call that will serve to be the stark reminder to these people (and others) that the games they play should never be played in the first place.

The US federal government issues passports to non-citizens?
I ask suspecting I already know the answer…

@WaterGirl:
One of my least favorite topics to teach is Freud.
The MAGA Repubs are doing their darnedest to make sure that everyone still has to study projection!
His words are exactly what Mike Johnson should contemplate. Right on, but yet so off…

Would those be…Hunger Games?
Professor Bigfoot
@Kirklin: That’s insane.
But then, that’s Texas, isn’t it?
Kathleen
@Peale: I have yet to find a word or phrase that adequately describes the horrific yet cartoonish and cruel epoch we are enduring. Dystopian is a good start!
Kathleen
@Kirklin: To be fair there aren’t that many options for a Nobel reject.
Jackie
@Kirklin:
Will they accept a laminated wallet-sized BC? Curious, because if a BC is required for more and more legal ID reasons, a wallet-sized BC along with your enhanced DL may be something to consider.
Deputinize America
@Kathleen:
Note how quickly the Trumpist authoritarians have pulled the lever on the power they have. Were what, 60-90 days from the allegation’s first surfacing?
This is what came of New York and the USG giving free passes to Trump, Kusher and Trump’s slimy crotch fruit for decades.
It is also why my real name social media accounts are now dark as to my political commentary and content – I don’t want to lose my passport, precheck, global entry, cell phone on reentering this fascist shithole or to draw an audit.
There are three justice systems now – one for everyday schlubs that sort of works, one for people of great wealth and privilege (that always works for them), and one for political oppression.
Kirklin
@Jackie: I don’t know. I know of the passport from personal experience
eta – whoops, I do know. I’d used my small laminated copy the prior renewal. They’d made the copy their supposed to use for later records (ie, you allegedly only need it the ‘first’ time). They told me it was not acceptable this time.
The whole thing was very frustrating, actually.
Scout211
@Jackie: Don’t you typically have to show a certified birth certificate for identification ? Are wallet-sized ones certified?
Also, laminating government documents usually renders them not valid for official identification. I learned that with my Social Security card when I first applied for a REAL ID.
Jackie
@Scout211: Never needed to provide a BC in WA to renew my DL before. Needed it to get the Real ID, but not sure if I need to bring it next time for renewal. It’s a new world.
Scout211
Not here in CA either.
At least here in CA, once you have a REAL ID, you just renew it when you renew your license, no documents needed.
Ramona
@Kirklin: what if one is a naturalized citizen? Would they not accept Elon Musk’s passport?
Jackie
@Scout211:
That’ll probably be the same for WA, then. Hell of a difference between Blue and Red states! A GOOD difference.
Kirklin
@Ramona: Again sadly I do not know – no “oh yeah” to follow here. I was basing that on personal experience at the Texas Department of Public Safety. (i.e. TxDMV)
