Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

… gradually, and then suddenly.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Let me file that under fuck it.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. keep building.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

Importantly, Johnson and Thune have now openly admitted that they have to do something about this.
Considering where they were a week ago, it's pretty clear who's winning the shutdown politics.

— Schnorkles O'Bork (@schnorkles.bsky.social) October 9, 2025 at 10:36 AM

I mean I think if you're the dems you go for the jugular here and move the goalposts to get the ACA subsidies and some other stuff too. Preferably "Vought has to spend this money"

Amazon is set to release its Melania Trump documentary in cinemas in January 2026.

The film follows the first lady in the 20 days before the 2025 inauguration and comes from director Brett Ratner. It marks the film-maker’s first feature since he was accused of sexual misconduct by a number of women in 2017. He had denied the claims.

The official description states that Melania will show us the world through her eyes as “she orchestrates inauguration plans, navigates the complexities of the White House transition, and re-enters public life with her family”. The documentary will also include “exclusive footage capturing critical meetings, private conversations, and never-before-seen environments”. She also acts as a producer on the project.

      …

Alongside the documentary, Amazon will also release a three-part docuseries on Melania showing her life travelling between New York, Washington DC and Palm Beach.

Is Thune’s comment a joke? Does he not remember that trump in 2016 ran “repealing Obamacare and replacing it with something wonderful” and then found out (something no one else knew) that the subject was a really complicated one?

With hours to go until the announcement of this year’s Nobel peace prize, Norwegian politicians were steeling themselves for potential repercussions to US-Norway relations if it is not awarded to Donald Trump.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee pointedly said on Thursday that it had reached a decision about who would be named 2025 peace prize laureate on Monday, several days before Israel and Hamas agreed to a ceasefire under the US president’s Gaza plan.

Taking into account the timeframe and the composition of the independent five-person committee, most Nobel experts and Norwegian observers believe it is highly unlikely that Trump will be awarded the prize, leading to fears in the country over how he will react to being overlooked so publicly.

Kirsti Bergstø, the leader of Norway’s Socialist Left party and its foreign policy spokesperson, said Oslo must be “prepared for anything.”

“Donald Trump is taking the US in an extreme direction, attacking freedom of speech, having masked secret police kidnapping people in broad daylight and cracking down on institutions and the courts. When the president is this volatile and authoritarian, of course we have to be prepared for anything,” Bergstø told the Guardian.

“The Nobel Committee is an independent body and the Norwegian government has no involvement in determining the prizes. But I’m not sure Trump knows that. We have to be prepared for anything from him.”

Meanwhile, in the Caribbean. Sorry, the America Gulf next to the Gulf of America, we learn that Colombians are on those Colombian boats we’ve been blasting. And it’s NOT ABOUT OIL EVEN A LITTLE BIT, YOU TAKE THAT BACK!

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has said that a boat recently bombed by the US was “Colombian with Colombian citizens inside”, an allegation the White House called “baseless”.

The US has struck at least four vessels in the Caribbean in recent weeks, killing 21 people. The US government has said the strikes in international waters were targeting “narco-traffickers”.

But it has not provided evidence or details about who or what is aboard, and the strikes have attracted condemnation in countries in the region amid concerns they breach international law.

The US Senate rejected a measure on Wednesday that would have barred President Donald Trump from using military force against the boats.

Petro replied to a post on X by US Senator Adam Schiff, a Democrat, who said he would vote to block strikes against vessels in the Caribbean as some lawmakers sought to challenge the use of the armed forces in Congress.

The Colombian president said that a “new war scenario has opened up: the Caribbean”.

Petro added that “indications show that the last boat bombed was Colombian with Colombian citizens inside it.

“I hope their families come forward and report it. There is no war against smuggling; there is a war for oil and it must be stopped by the world. The aggression is against all of Latin America and the Caribbean.”

Petro did not provide further details about the alleged identities of those on board. The US has not commented on the identities of the individuals killed in the strikes.

The White House said in a statement that it “looks forward to President Petro publicly retracting his baseless and reprehensible statement”.

It said that while the two nations had “policy differences”, the US remained “committed to close co-operation on a range of shared priorities, including regional security and stability”.

I’d go to sports book and do a parlay on us seizing Venezuelan drilling platforms in “our gulf.”

It’s not like giving him a fucking Nobel, regardless of the merits, will mollify him or make him less volatile and the fact the Nobel Committee is saying this is the exact reason he’s very unlikely to get one.

Was unlimited funding to Israel in any of the budgets and CRs passed during this administration? Was any of that funding part of DOGE cuts or Russell Vought’s recissioning? Or Trump’s freezing of funds?  Did Israel feel like it would risk starting another front on hot world war III with its nukes to stop Iran’s infinity timeline towards nukes because it had full throated US backing? Ok then.

@mrmoshpotato: Scalise after all of this is a man who voted against gun control. I don’t think these people care about polls, he’s doing some DARVO for fun and relaxation. If they wanted to pass a budget they could’ve done it ages ago.  He could’ve gone after Vought or DOGE but isn’t. Because he likes that shit. Or is afraid. I don’t care at this point.

Does he realize his Democratic colleagues gave more of shit about him being shot than any Republicans or Trump gave about Horman, or Giffords, or any number of victims of violence. His administration is the one saying federal employees maybe shouldn’t get back pay?

WASHINGTON — A C-SPAN caller made an emotional plea to House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., on Thursday to end the government shutdown, saying that “my kids could die” if she can’t afford their medication.

The woman, identified as Samantha from Fort Belvoir, Virginia, expressed concerns over what would happen to her family if military service members do not get paid next week. The caller, who was also identified as a Republican, said that she has “two medically fragile children” and that her husband “actively serves his country” and had spent two military tours in Afghanistan.

      …
“The Democrats are the ones that are preventing you from getting a check. If we did another, a vote on the floor, pay troops, it’s not a lawmaking exercise, because [Senate Minority Leader] Chuck Schumer is going to hold that up in the Senate,” Johnson said.

Reached for comment, a spokesperson for Schumer’s office said, “We have no idea what Speaker Johnson is talking about.”

@Castor Canadensis: While withholding rent because of unsafe/unlivable conditions is generally okay in the US, each state tends to have specific rules about the way to do it.  It usually requires giving notice and putting the money in an escrow account.  Failure to follow these rules and still withholding rent can be grounds for eviction.  It is important to check what your state’s rules are before taking action.

Is Thune’s comment a joke? Does he not remember that trump in 2016 ran “repealing Obamacare and replacing it with something wonderful” and then found out (something no one else knew) that the subject was a really complicated one?

The GOP has had 8 years (since Trump took office in 1/20/17) to come up with any sort of viable replacement for Obamacare, let alone a better one, and they haven’t come up with anything better than what amounts to selling junk health insurance across state lines, governed by the laws of whichever state has the most lax laws and regulations covering insurance companies. They talk big about free-market private enterprise solutions as better, ignoring that the whole impetus for Obamacare in the first place was that outside of Medicare and Medicaid, health insurance pre-Obamacare was private enterrpise, free-market, in which there are only incentives to cover people who are healthiest and least likely to make expensive health insurance claims.  And if you contracted a difficult condition, the insurers were incentivized to find grounds (e.g. preexisting condition, lifetime benefits, etc) to crop you like a hot rock the first nanosecond they could.

So it’s basically a piece of cake.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb was asked by a reporter during the bilateral meeting if Trump deserves the Nobel Prize tomorrow.

“I think that’s probably a decision that comes from the Nobel Committee. And my take is that there are two key pieces that have to be solved in the big picture. One is in the Middle East, and we’re seeing the results of that. And then the other one is between Russia and Ukraine,” Stubb said. “And once those are solved … I don’t see any impediments to Trump next year.”

Future text books on the difference between correlation and causation will be dedicated to RFK Jr.

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. stunningly claimed Thursday there may be a link between circumcision and autism – due to distribution of Tylenol to infants following the procedure.

“There’s two studies which show children who are circumcised early have double the rate of autism, it’s highly likely, because they were given Tylenol,” Kennedy told President Trump during a Cabinet meeting.

@Baud: Just heard the facts. Which it appears the Grand Jury did not.

Letitia James was co-signing a mortgage to help her niece. Ms. James wrote in capital letters on the application “THIS IS NOT MY PRIMARY RESIDENCE”.

But, somehow, one box saying “primary residence” got checked.

Even Todd Blanche said there is no case.

But Trump just wants to torture her. So she gets indicted.

Trump’s DOJ in disarray. In fairness, this encompasses many of their cases.

Justice Department lawyers reposting President Trump’s statements may have inadvertently endangered their prosecution of Luigi Mangione, who is on trial for the alleged murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December.

On September 18, Trump said in a Fox News interview that Mangione “shot someone in the back as clear as you’re looking at me…. He shot him right in the middle of the back — instantly dead…. This is a sickness. This really has to be studied and investigated.” All of what Trump said was only alleged.

A clip of the interview was posted by conservative page Rapid Response 47. DOJ Public Affairs head Chad Gilmartin retweeted it, commenting that the president was “absolutely right,” violating the judge’s explicit orders that DOJ employees refrain from public comment about the  case.

And since no prosecutors would file charges, they did find a grand jury to indict:

New York Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat who has clashed with President Donald Trump, was indicted Thursday by a federal grand jury in Virginia, three sources familiar with the matter confirmed to NBC News.
James was charged with one count of bank fraud after Trump publicly called for his Justice Department appointees to bring charges against her

      Baud got there first.

Oy. I just read one of those studies (with over 340,000 participants).

The authors clearly wrote “Unfortunately, we had no data available on analgesics or possible local anaesthetics used during ritual circumcisions in our cohort, so we were unable to address the paracetamol  [i.e., Tylenol] hypothesis directly.”

So it has been about 15 years now at the ACA has been in effect. Or at least law. Since before it passed and was signed into law the Republicans have been saying we can do it better cheaper cover more people. Considering that Obamacare was really Romney care and patterned after the Republican version of a healthcare plan the statement that they can even do it better is kind of interesting. Like infrastructure week their better cheaper health Plan is always 2 weeks away. What they have are some talking points and the closest we got to detail was when Romney was running. After you analyzed what he said it was basically go back to what we had before anything was passed. Lord knows we have plenty of room to improve on what we’ve got – that is building on what we have not dumping it and trying to start from nothing again. Left to their own devices the Republicans would not even eliminate coverage caps or allow people with pre-existing conditions to get insurance again.

Seriously, the Republican position is that rich people should get health care and poor people should die. Those in the middle class will become poor trying to stay alive and then they can die. And they think that really isn’t obvious by now.

A federal judge ruled Thursday that federal agents can’t use tear gas, pepper spray and other weapons against journalists and peaceful protesters after Block Club Chicago and others sued the federal government over its actions against journalists outside the Broadview ICE detention facility.

The temporary ruling comes after four Block Club journalists were indiscriminately hit by pepper-spray bullets and tear-gassed by federal agents; an independent journalist was arrested; and a TV reporter’s vehicle was hit with a pepper ball, covering her face in chemicals — all as they covered protests outside the suburban Broadview facility.

The ruling comes after the Trump administration deployed scores of federal agents to Chicago to carry out a “blitz” of immigration enforcement, then mobilized National Guard troops, ostensibly to provide backup. Against that backdrop, the order from U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis confirms journalists’ right to report and the public’s right to protest under the First Amendment.

“Whatever lawlessness is occurring is not occurring by peaceful protesters” and journalists, Ellis said after reading her decision aloud. Some actions by federal agents “clearly violate the constitution,” the judge said. “Individuals are allowed to protest. They are allowed to speak. That is guaranteed by the First Amendment to our Constitution, and it is a bedrock right that upholds our democracy.”

In issuing the temporary restraining order, Ellis barred federal agents from using riot control weapons including pepper-spray bullets and tear gas against journalists and protesters who don’t pose a serious threat to law enforcement officers or others. She also prohibited agents from using physical force against journalists or arresting them unless they are suspected of committing a crime.

The order also requires federal agents to wear badges or other “visible identification” so the public can know who they are, with exceptions for those officers who work undercover.

The order applies to all U.S. Department of Homeland Security agents — including ICE and Border Patrol — across the Northern District of Illinois, which covers more than a dozen counties across the top of the state.

@Baud: Speaking of which, Max Burns at Dame offered this tidbit about the Virginia Gubernatorial race. Spoiler alert: I thought running porn web sites that specialized in Nazi fetish content was a required skill on any self respecting MAGAT candidate’s resume:

Abigail Spanberger couldn’t have picked a better moment to remind Virginians that the Republican Party is full of nutcases. The Virginia GOP’s nominating fight was a brutal civil war between the Commonwealth’s remaining Christian conservatives and the ascendant MAGA wing, and resulted in a split ticket — with Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears representing the traditionalists and her running mate John Reid carrying the MAGA banner.

The result has been a shambles. Last week, Reid drew scandalous headlines for allegedly running a porn website that specialized in Nazi fetish content, before doubling down by attacking his own running mate for opposing marriage equality (Reid is the first openly gay candidate nominated for Virginia statewide office). Meanwhile, Virginia is shedding federal jobs following Trump’s mass layoffs and government shutdown, tanking the state’s economy in the process.
