Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This chaos was totally avoidable.

Dear elected officials: Trump is temporary, dishonor is forever.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

Come on, man.

I would try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

No Kings: Americans standing in the way of bad history saying “Oh, Fuck No!”

It’s a good piece. click on over. but then come back!!

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

There is no right way to do the wrong thing.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Stay strong, because they are weak.

This really is a full service blog.

Take A Minute to Take Action

Zoom With Four Directions Set for Thursday at 7 pm ET 1

Our friends at VAAC (Voting Access for All) just sent me this action item.

Anti-voter groups have flooded the Election Assistance Commission (EAC) with more than 200,000 comments demanding a dangerous new requirement: that Americans show a passport or other proof of citizenship just to register to vote.

If voted in, this change would disenfranchise millions of eligible Americans—including students, Black and Brown voters, returning citizens, rural residents, lower-income and working-class individuals, and married women—all who could face severe difficulties obtaining or producing these documents. We can’t let it go unanswered.

Michigan has seen efforts to pass this requirement in the statehouse, and we’re currently facing a looming threat in the form of a ballot initiative. This is obviously a multi-pronged effort to undermine the will of the people and a direct attack on voting access.

With just days left until the October 20 deadline for comment, we urgently need a flood of pro-voter comments to show public opposition and stop this barrier to the ballot box from being implemented. This is where we need you.

Here’s how you can take action right now:

Submit a Public Comment (it takes only one minute!). Feel free to copy and paste the message below into the EAC’s comment form, but adding your personal flair to the message is always recommended!

Here’s what you need to say:  (no need to include this specifically, just supplying info you can use)

I’m against requiring citizens to submit a passport or other documents to prove citizenship to register to vote. Only half of American citizens have a passport, and 69 million citizens lack a birth certificate that matches their current legal name—most of them women. States already verify eligibility. We don’t need to add more barriers to the ballot.

Click here to submit your comment to the EAC now!

Thank you for taking urgent action,

Voting Access for All Coalition

*****

Note from WG:

They submitted 200,000 comments in an effort to stop people from voting.

Let’s be like Elliott Ness:

“They pull a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue. That’s the Chicago way!”

Submit your comment today, and ask everyone you know to submit a comment opposing this un-American policy.

The Elliott Ness line was Jim Malone’s. Sean Connery in The Untouchables, or maybe Jeopardy.

      • Jim Malone: You wanna know how to get Capone? They pull a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue. *That’s* the *Chicago* way! And that’s how you get Capone. Now do you want to do that? Are you ready to do that? I’m offering you a deal. Do you want this deal?

Thought I’d add the EAC’s specific summary of the petition and a link to the petition itself for fellow pedants.

The petition submitted by America First Legal Foundation seeks to initiate a rulemaking process to amend 11 CFR 9428.4 and the federal voter registration form to require applicants to provide one of the following as proof of citizenship: U.S. Passport, State-issued Real ID-compliant driver’s license indicating that the applicant is a citizen, an official military identification card that indicates the applicant is a citizen of the United States, or a valid Federal or State government-issued photo identification if such identification indicates that the applicant is a United States citizen or if such identification is otherwise accompanied by proof of
      United States citizenship.

Petition is on file at this link.

      Oh, and comment made.

      Here’s what I wrote:

Seriously? You want to require a passport as ID to vote? Hardly anyone has a passport, and the process for getting one is long. States have always managed to verify citizenship to vote, and this move is just blatant voter suppression, and likely completely unconstitutional. How about securing more votes by convincing people to vote for you instead of preventing them from voting by changing the rules? It is telling that these proposed changes will disproportionately hurt women who changed their name upon marriage. It says a lot about your priorities.

I just submitted a comment, using this template but adding a sentence about the barrier of expense and time that would need to be spent existing-voters to continue to exercise that right. I remember when there was a work requirement (for a job I had done for over a decade) to submit a birth certificate that was “better” than the one I possessed. It took two attempts to go up to San Francisco and go to a counter in City Hall. It would have been even more difficult then to have the official-enough certificate issued if I wasn’t able to bring along my then 70-something mother.

After submitting the current comment form, I wasn’t able to go back and copy my additions to WaterGirl’s boilerplate. Otherwise I’d share it for others to use (I didn’t include my experience in the comment itself).

I also suggest avoiding copy-pasting that Elliot Ness quote as your comment.

Done. In addition to the suggested talking points, I said that as a passport holder, I know from personal experience that the fees and waiting time could be a significant obstacle for would-be voters.

I added that a passport requirement is unnecessary, since instances of noncitizens voting are very, very rare, and we should cut down on needless federal regulations!

Thanks for the opportunity to weigh in, WaterGirl.

Would they care about the likely effects or see it as a bonus encouraging them to do it?

I changed my registration months ago (thanks Florida Dems).

The ability to vote freely in free and open elections is the compromise position. If they disenfranchise and oppress large numbers of people, they deserve no sympathy for the fear of what even a fraction of such angry people may contemplate or do.

The more people who are excluded from voting, the less legitimacy your elections have.

I don’t think they fear voters enough truly. There are too many isolated from accountability to an electorate.

If the popular vote mattered, we wouldn’t have 6-3 Supreme Court, and neither of the last two Republican presidents would’ve won their first terms.

      The comment I just submitted:

I am strongly against any requirement to show a passport or other proof of citizenship when registering to vote. Less than half of Americans possess a passport, and tens of millions of Americans do not have their birth certificates, or have birth certificates that don’t match their current names (mainly women who’ve changed their names when they married). There is NO WIDESPREAD VOTING BY NON-CITIZENS, meaning there is no need for this added hurdle for Americans to vote. This seems like a burden being erected to voting for zero actual benefit. Making voting harder for no actual reason other than trying to make voting harder is un-American and wrong.

I’m confused by the form. At the end, there’s a form to give your name, address, phone number, etc., and then it says, “Do not submit personally identifiable information through this form.” Dafuq?? That’s what it just asked me to provide!

On a more serious note, a lot of technology (like VCR’s) got adopted by delivering porn. Opening AI to porn delivery can open new support for what is an already shady business.

@Baud: this is the 10th Ward. It’s not a War Zone. Not even close. For years, it was a bastion of the poorer YT Ethnics in the city. Lot of city workers there. The ones who weren’t police or firemen (They were  on the southwest side edge of the city) .

As they moved on, Hispanics became the dominant group, with a sizeable Black population, a lot of who were in the forefront of desegregating the Ward. My late sister was one of the first Black teachers  from the Chicago Public Schools over there. It’s where she began her teaching career in the Early 70’s.

      My comment:

Massive waste of taxpayer money for a problem that hasn’t existed in several decades, since they stopped canvassing graveyards. Illegal voting is rare because it’s a crime even the dumbest criminal wouldn’t commit. It’s too easy to get caught and there’s little prospect of a reward—certainly not an immediate one.

I could count the number of illegal votes cast in the last Presidential election on the fingers of one hand after playing with a cherry bomb. The only big cases I remember from recently cases are a woman in Texas who mistakenly thought she was eligible after parole (and was persecuted by AG Ken Paxton) and some idiot who did it to prove it was easy to vote illegally—and got caught and went to jail. And no non-citizen immigrant, legal or illegal, in their right mind would do it either. A party that suborned illegal voting would be crooked enough to break its promises, especially after it got what it needed, and the illegal voters had meanwhile been caught and jailed and/or deported. And most illegal immigrants fled crooked governments, so the last thing they’d do is get mixed up in a crooked election instead of keeping their heads down and working to survive and send money to their families back home.

I’ve lived in the 10th ward, which at one time (and for a lot of years) was “owned” by Vrdolyak as the alderman.  That dude was only a half step behind the Daleys for power, and he still lives there.  That’s probably one ward with some of the lowest violent crime in the city.  Heavily Hispanic with well-taken care of bungalows and gorgeous yards.  The rent is more reasonable than any other area in the city, too.

To human vision it looks like a perfectly adequate picture of me, but to this machine it just does not, and they always have to call in another officer to approve the visual match. Car in front of me at the Aroma Joe’s drive through had a bumper sticker that said “My dog is a Democrat–he waits around all day and expects me to feed him”.

I’m fascinated by the idea that Democrats are all somehow on the dole and only Republicans actually have jobs. I’ve heard people batting this around online too–reminds me of the conviction that red states are supporting blue ones with tax revenue when obviously the reverse is true. I guess it’s just racist, it’s that special double-secret welfare that only non-white people can get.

@JaySinWa: Okay, the numbers posted are screwy. Here is the “explaination”, but it doesn’t really explain much. Apparently there are over 300,000 comments as of yesterday but only 35,350 available to read.

Number of Comments Posted to this Docket
      35,350

Comments are submitted on individual documents in a docket. By clicking on the tab for “Docket Documents”, you can access document-specific comments and submit your own comments. By clicking on the tab for “All Comments on Docket”, you can have consolidated access to all comments for the docket from one location. In some instances, agencies do not publicly post all comments received. You can only access those comments that are posted to Regulations.gov by the agencies. The number of accessible comments, therefore, may be lower than the total number of comments listed in the card below.

      Less Details

      Number of Comments Received
      321,109

This count refers to the total comment/submissions received on this docket, as of 11:59 PM yesterday. For a detailed description on how the displayed comment count is derived, please see the note on the FAQ page. Note: Comments are made on individual documents within the docket. To review all comments from a docket, please click on “All Comments on Docket”.

ETA From the referenced FAQ apparently some comments are bundled in one document.

How are Comments counted and posted to Regulations.gov?

Comments are made on individual Documents within a Docket. Comment Counts are provided for individual Documents and for the total number of Comments for all Documents in a Docket.

Everyone can comment on a Document. Comment Counts that refer to Comments Received are derived by adding all individual Comments made on Documents within the Docket.

When uploading Attachments to the Regulations.gov Comment Form, users are asked, “Did you attach files with multiple Comment submissions?” If the user indicates “Yes,” they are prompted to provide the number of Comments the Attachment represents. The Comment will have one Comment ID, but will count as multiple Comments.

That number is incorporated into the Overall Comment Count. While Comments representing multiple submissions will be reflected in the Overall Comment Count, they will not automatically be reflected in the Number of Comments Posted because a Comment representing multiple Comment submissions will only be posted one time.

As a result, the Docket may reflect that the Number of Comments Received is greater than the Number of Comments Posted, even if all of the Comment submissions, including Comment submissions with an Attachment(s) containing multiple Comment submissions, have been posted.

Not every Comment is made publicly available to read. Comment Counts that refer to Comments posted reflect the number of Comments an agency has posted to Regulations.gov to be publicly viewable. Agencies may redact or withhold certain Comment Submissions (or portions thereof), such as those containing private or proprietary information, inappropriate language, or duplicate/near duplicate examples of a mass-mail campaign. Therefore, the total in the Number of Comments Posted Box may be lower than the total in the Comments Received Box. For specific information about an agency’s public submission policy, refer to the agency’s website or the Federal Register Document.

From the “Docket Details” Page, you will see a Comment Count in two boxes titled “Number of Comments Posted to this Docket” and “Number of Comments Received”. The “All Comments on Docket” Tab provides access to All Posted Comments in the Docket. This tab will have the same Comment Count as the “Number of Comments Posted to this Docket” Box.

From the “Document Details” Page, you will see a Comment Count in a box titled “Comments Received”. If a Document has received Comments and the agency has posted the Comments to Regulations.gov for public viewing, you will also see a “Document Comments” Tab with a count of posted Comments.

      @WaterGirl: I sent in a comment.

There’s only one email address I’ve just left out as my public email anyways.

@Matt McIrvin: Personally, a passport is more expensive than a REAL ID but wasn’t more complicated for me to get. Getting a passport was more straightforward for me (if longer in terms of mail time).  But I’ve just been renewing passports as I go (and not letting them lapse for too long if they lapse), not getting an entirely new one from scratch.  And REAL ID in my state just proves I’m legally here.

Not coincidentally the REAL ID is where I have to worry about the patriarchy. Also, love these old computer systems which may or may not truncate names.

In my experience, also, HR departments understand what passports better than certificates of naturalization, which don’t expire.

You can only renew passports so far in advance. :-/

BigR just wrote to say that he did a little research before submitting his comment.

“Roughly 20 percent of Americans hold a valid passport.”  Mark B. Salter, Passports, Mobility, and Security: How smart can the border be?, 5 INT. STUD. PER., Volume 5, 71, 75 (2004) (available at doi.org/10.1111/j.1528-3577.2004.00158.x) (last accessed October 14, 2025).

Let’s guess which passports would get through the process, or even the renewal process.

I added this: Everything about this proposal is backwards. Voting is a sacred right. Far from a voter having to prove their right to vote, it should be incumbent on the government to prove they do not have the right. Why are we burdening voters? Any government office that cannot verify their voter rolls needs to be replaced with competent officials who can do their job.

Have already commented on the petition from the viewpoint of overseas voters: that it exposes them to identity theft. Overseas citizens all have passports; there’s no secure way to send copies of them safely or have them processed securely.
