Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

People identifying as christian while ignoring christ and his teachings is a strange thing indeed.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

The revolution will be supervised.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

I really should read my own blog.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. do not touch it.”

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

“Just close your eyes and kiss the girl and go where the tilt-a-whirl takes you.” ~OzarkHillbilly

In after Baud. Damn.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

It is not hopeless, and we are not helpless.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

American history and black history cannot be separated.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Wankers: guys who put up a personal that says: “You want an honest man, you got it” and then makes up really lame excuses on the internets and on the phone about why they haven’t called you after they initially fall all over themselves to contact you with a bunch of phony bullshit lines; and then call you at 11:00 am because he happens to be in town and do I want to have lunch that day.

Pens-Caps–and yet it is nowhere to be found on my satellite system, which leaves me with a basketball game I care nothing about (Cavs-Hawks) and a baseball game I care even less about (Mets-Braves). Hrmmph.

You know, I was reading through TNR/other political periodicals from the late 90s and some of Andrew Sullivan’s stuff from 2001…and I’ve concluded that John’s idea of “peak wingnut” isn’t actually wrong, it’s just that it only applies to national politics and not the GOP. From this viewpoint, “peak wingnut” was between 01 and 04, which is where wingnut policies ceased to be sustainable in all their slobbering furor at a national level.

If the pen wins, you wind up with an ink stained pocket. Caps are our friends.

Did this article come up in the Rush threads earlier? Clearchannel is going belly-up, and it can’t happen soon enough for me. Fucker’s have done so much damage to almost every aspect of the media. Fun fact from the story:

The astronomical worth of Limbaugh’s eight-year pact: $400 million. The amount of money Clear Channel execs have been trying to scrimp and save this year as they lay off thousands from the struggling company: $400 million.

You can’t deny that a nib is a lovely thing and caps, even when put on correctly, nastily slip off and cause leaks.

Third Eye….While I like the Pens and LOVE the Steelers, I am from Detroit (my family brainwashed me for years to cheer only for Pittsburgh teams), and those are fightin’ words. The Wings are the good guys in the league. I like the Pens, but if they go up against the Wings for a second consecutive game, then, it’s GO WINGS!!!

I intimately understand the stakes here. On one hand you have the Wings, on the other you have a professional sports team named after a Disney movie starring Emelio Estevez. It’s one of them lose-lose scenarios for all free-thinking hockey fans.

Clear Channel paid rush $400M and that’s what they’re now in the hole? Amazing. If El Fatso doesn’t finish the company off himself, the shareholder lawsuits will.

[edit: I learned that CC took itself private, buying itself out of a previous shareholder suit. I guess it’s off to bankruptcy court to renegotiate Blowhardo The Magnificent’s contract)

I grew up as a Rangers fan, and was convinced that I would never see them hoist the cup. When they returned to suckitude post-1994, I gave up on them, and since I live less than 15 minutes from the Honda Center, I suppose that makes me a Ducks fan. So I will join in a hearty chorus of “F**k the Wings and Their Octopus-Abusing Fans.”

Anaheim Huns, in recognition of its decidedly German history, I dunno. But what I can tell you is that the duck is one of the least menacing mascots besides perhaps banana slugs and buckeyes.

In my personal opinion I would like to see 6 or 8 teams purged from the league. I would offer up the Panthers, Sabres and Islanders in the East; Coyotes, Oilers and Ducks in the West.

Being a Shark season ticket holder, I want Detroit to kick all sorts of Duck ass. They have a bunch of Swedes, too (dad’s from there).

None of these guys are Lemieux.

A few weeks before he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s, the Pens were in town to play the Sharks and he was questionable with a bad foot or residual back stuff. Didn’t matter, what with 1 goal and 6 assists later.

Congrats! Fwiw, I consider the difficultu of the Cal Bar to be vastly overrated. I passed it first time, as a fourth-year associate, with only two weeks of full-time prep. The pass rate for grads of ABA accredited schools is much higher than the overall pass rate, and the pass rate for graduates of the Big Five (Stanford, Boalt, USC, UCLA, and Hastings) is consistently above 80 percent. I have no doubt that you will prepare thoroughly and kick its ass.

All I ask is that you do better than Bybee and Yoo.

Aiming sort of low, aren’t you? I’d ask that s/he not commit any crimes, not just crimes against humanity. Not that I expect that to be a problem for anybody with any sort of conscience.

    Anyway, mazel tov Turgidson!

    May 11, 2009 at 10:31 pm

    @MikeJ:

I don’t plan on finding unfathomably specious legal reasoning for advocating crimes against humanity. Now, finding specious reasons to protect corporations from legal liability for monopolization (or keeping their employees under the jackboot heel)? Well, that’s a different story. Sigh. I only plan on selling my soul long enough to pay back my loans, and maybe put a down payment on a house.

But anyway, thanks everybody! Feels great to have this hurdle cleared! (assuming I didn’t fail anything!)

and yeah, I went to Hastings, so hopefully I’ll be among the lucky 80% that passes the bar the first time. Just not looking forward to the prep class.

@MikeJ: Yes. That way, I won’t be disappointed. Actually, I fully expect anyone who frequents this board and is not a troll to be a hell of a lot more moral and conscientious than either Bybee or Yoo. Especially the latter fucker.

    May 12, 2009 at 12:30 pm

    @Turgidson:

I know a guy who had Yoo as a teacher, thought he was lousy and couldn’t stand him. Bybee was supposedly a pretty good teacher – NPR had one of his students on who was far more liberal than Bybee who gave a positive assessment. With Yoo, maybe it was the class. His opinions and op-eds are so transparently crappy and dishonest, I find it hard to believe he’d be a very good teacher. Some scumbags can be somewhat personable when not practicing the dark arts, though.

Regardless, congratulations and best of luck.
