Wicked Games is the only Chris Isaak song I actually know. MTV probably played the shit out of it cause it’s one of the sexiest music videos ever made in the history of music videos.

Maybe this is part of the joke, we all know why this video or the video for “Bad Bad Thing” was played all the time, but your embedded video does not have the actual singing. I’m not sure if that is Chris Isaak, but normally it isn’t awful and near to breaking.
Also, this song is ordinarily ok, but I much prefer “Bad Bad Thing,” which is a bit more rocking. This song is Isaak trying to be Roy Orbison, which is not something that is going to turn out well.

“Eh. He has an appeal to a certain demographic. Not mine.”

You do realize that’s not actually Chris Isaak? This is.

Apparently, Youtube has allowed the record label to disable the sound while leaving the video. The Internet swarm has responded accordingly.

@Will: I didn’t even listen to the video. I just don’t care for Chris Isaak–thus, the “not mine” comment.

I saw him quite a bit in SF in his early days as he was developing his act–a friend of mine was dating his bass player–and while his recordings always seemed a bit too bland to me, his live shows were always great. Much more campy and theatrical, and just a lot of fun.

For a second there I was thinking, “were the vocals really this bad? Was I really that much in the throes of puberty to have watched this video so many times?”

But, I actually like Chris. He played a Federal Agent in Twin Peaks (albeit, Fire Walk with Me), so that gets him points in my book.

Har-de-har-har. It is a time-honored tradition in rock music to pepper your videos with hot models. Practically a requirement, actually.

And, c’mon, the entire history of rock music is practically a monument to one-hit wonders. Which is why you can find at least one good song from almost anybody, even someone you hate..

Speaking of which, I can almost hear the Bakersfield sound from here.

    Yeah, I can hear Bakersfield.

Re: “I assume this is an ironic statement, but just in case: because he’s HOTT.”

MTV gave Chris Isaac time because he told the women what they wanted to hear, in the medium and image in which they wanted to experience it. Girls just want to have fun, you know. They then bought soap, and telephone services, and feminine hygiene products from MTV.

This would not be allowed in Islamic societies, which is probably a positive. There music is forbidden. But if the Muslim decision-makers did allow exceptions for music behind closed doors, it would probably be umpah bands, which I like. Chris Isaac sucks.

    According to Wiki

“Isaak is also an amateur boxer, a former Golden Gloves champion and an avid surfer. He is a correspondent for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Extra.

The Biography Channel will air The Chris Isaak Hour, a music interview and performance show. The series premiere will feature Trisha Yearwood, and will include the first ever performance of “Breaking Apart”, a duet from Isaak’s new album, Mr. Lucky. Additional guests include Stevie Nicks, Smashing Pumpkins, Chicago, Glen Campbell, Michael Buble, Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens), and Jewel.”

What wiki doesn’t tell you is that he is often surfing off Ocean Beach in SF.

    Addicted to Love:

VH1’s Pop-up Video trivia about the video include the fact that a musician was hired to teach the models basic guitar fingering techniques, but “gave up after about an hour and left”. The episode also pointed out several choreographical errors, including the models moving out of sync with one another, and moving during points with no backbeat, such as the second chorus.

Gotta disagree, Tim. Isaak’s actually very good. “Heart-Shaped World” “San Francisco Days” and “Forever Blue” are three excellent albums. He puts on a great live show (saw him in Central Park several years ago), and he IS a pretty funny guy.

He also played a guard riding the elevator with Hannibal Lector in “Silence of the Lambs”.

Good-looking, talented musician and songwriter with acting chops and a sense of humor? If his albums didn’t deliver the goods, he’s the kind of guy I’d be itching to hate.

so i just read bobo brooks’ new op-ed.

he disagrees with cheney: obama is keeping us safe, and making us safer.

but, brooks explains to us, (because he is a republican shill to the depths of his penny-loafered toes), this is really due to the fact that obama is doing exactly what bush was doing.

after bush got rid of cheney’s evil influence, see. around 2004.

after that, it was a kinder, gentler gitmo, from 2004 on. and that’s all obama is doing now.

so you see? bush good! cheney bad! obama okay.

i feel like puking after i read his columns. he is just as dishonest as cheney is–every sentence is a lie.

still, he is also a reliable weathercock for a certain kind of d.c. conventional wisdom. so it’s interesting to see him siding with obama against cheney.

and it will be interesting to see what the corner has to say about him tomorrow.

    So John posts this:

This is where a dozen of you armchair Eberts jam the comments with remarks that I have no taste, that so and so was a much better show and that it was first done in an obscure series that no one but someone really cool like you remembers, and that Southland really sucks.

…to which Tim responds by preempting any armchair Eberts by pre-hating Chris Isaak.

“I have no idea why MTV gave him so much play.”

Give the guy a break! I would submit that the cover you linked to is crap: the singer is trying to pretend to be Isaak, while the band is just putting a fluffy “modern” rhythms over the singer. Overall, it falls pretty far short of an improvement over the original. No matter what you think of Chris Isaak now, his debut was pretty impressive at the time — unlike this fairly crappy cover now.

yup, i think that’s about right. unlike the cornerites, he thinks that cheney’s reputation is toast, permanently.

but he thinks that the bush family crime syndicate will continue to have some clout for the foreseeable future, so he’s sucking up to them.

plus, he figures he worked hard enough lying for bush for eight years that his own reputation is involved in propping up bush’s reputation.

And also there was a time where the song “Don’t Make Me Dream About You” was the most requested song across the US,, or something to that effect.

Chris Isaak writes sex music. Slow, sensuous, puts most women in the mood and keeps them there for a long, long time. You have to listen to San Francisco Days or Forever Blue in their entirety to get the full effect. Being forced to listen to the same 3 minutes over and over again like MTV did to Wicked Game would make any song suck.

Off topic – but a couple days ago, I made reservations on Priceline for a trip to Hawaii for my partner and me. Today, he realized I made the outbound trip for June 19th, when I was SUPPOSED to make it for the 20th. So I called Priceline, and they completely refunded the trip and told me to go back in and re-do it.

    Nothing to it.

I remember a few years ago you could fuck up on Priceline and they would charge you out the wazoo for a change to your itinerary.

Good customer service today. Just thought I would pass that along.

And, while we’re on Country Music, @Steeplejack. Dwight Yoakam.

Anything by him is good. Although he always looks stoned out of his head.

Our new president is too cool for school. As John mentioned yesterday, the World Champion Pittsburgh Steelers were welcomed to the White House to celebrate their most awesome Super Bowl win. Instead of the usual photo op, the Commie-in-Chief put them to work packing care packages for the troops. They packed over 3000 boxes for our people in Afghanistan. He also welcomed local injured soldiers and 3 cops who were herioc during the Richard Povlowski rampage. All chipped in to pack boxes, too. Even Dan Rooney was packing away. All were laughing and working and happy to have been put to work instead of snapping posed pics and getting pats on the head. Now that’s some change I can believe in.

WESTERLY, R.I. – A Rhode Island Democratic lawmaker says he’ll donate $100 to charity for every second former President George W. Bush withstands waterboarding.

State Rep. Rod Driver also included former Vice President Dick Cheney and ex-Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in his offer. He sent letters to all three.

Bush’s administration allowed the interrogation technique, which simulates drowning, to be used on terror suspects. Driver says that, if Bush is so confident it isn’t torture, he should try it for himself. His offer was first reported Thursday in The Westerly Sun.

Raul has a great crooner voice, but he doesn’t quite go to the desperately paranoid extremes that made some of Orbison’s songs so memorable.

I love the Mavericks. I saw them play on one of the free stages at the MN state fair right as ‘Oh What A Cryin’s Shame’ was breaking bigtime. They played three great shows over the course of the day and every one was completely different (a lot of acts just repeat their sets without any variation) and they were playful enough that they could find a way to slip Lennon’s ‘Give Peace A Chance’ into a medley.

as I listen to Honk on the drive out.

    This Honk?

I ordered it on March 12 and it came this week. It was the soundtrack to my final year at UCSB. I have not heard those songs for nearly 30 years. I put it in as I began a 35 min drive up a gorgeous, windy mountain road, opened the sunroof, and I swear to God, I smiled the whole way up the hill. I felt like such a goofy maroon, but what fun. Listened to it all again coming back down. What a sensation, to know lyrics and melodies on such a visceral level without exposure to them for so long. Like catching a whiff of a fragrance that reminds you of Grandma’s lingerie drawer when you were very young.

Honk is playing at Dana Point on July 19. I hope NedR goes and reviews it. I’d die to be there.
(Last time I brought Honk up here people thought I meant a play or something? I thought Iowa Housewife and I were the only people here who remembered Honk, but for some West Coast surfers for the 5 Summer Stories soundtrack.)

So after plunking down 30 bucks (what’s up with that!) and waiting three weeks for delivery it came yesterday. It was not a dissapointment. Thanks for bringing them up.
