We’ve got some gorgeous pictures today that I know my mom would have loved. She was very fond of Venice, having spent a week there a least 10 years running! It’s hard to believe it’s been 11 months tomorrow, but time marches on.

I missed Venice this summer, but my sister was able to end her trip with a day in Venice and really loved it. Thank you for the great photos.

Venice is my dream city. I desperately want to go back.
Pro tip: if you want to say you’ve been on a gondola ride without forking over big $$, take one of the gondolas that ferry people across the Grand Canal in between bridge crossings. It costs 50 cents Euro and you can brag to all your friends about your gondola ride.

Oh, man…I got to Venice once as a kid (ok, I was 25 but that was 30 years ago, so KID), and I loved it. I remember taking lots and lots of photos of lines of laundry hanging over the canals, for some reason. I think the juxtaposition of fabled canal streets and buildings with something as homely as laundry just tickled me.

Yes, the way people live in ancient cities is fascinating. When we visited Firenze last spring, we walked past the “historic” palace into a residential neighborhood where people were returning home after visiting local markets for vegetables and bread. Still ancient buildings with narrow doorways and such, but where the ordinary people lived. Fabulous.
Firenze is Italian for the city of Florence, capitol of Tuscany. There are large parts of the city that are newly built, high tech industry, etc. The tourist district is really old, tiny streets winding. Google Maps took us in circles as we tried to find our hotel for the in-town part of the trip.

@J R in WV: We went to Florence, too. Florence was where my bf lost his money belt – because he had carelessly left it in the shower – and we didn’t realize it till we were on the train, bound for Vienna. Fortunately, we managed to get off the train in time, then had to hoof it to the police station in order to report the robbery so we could get our traveller’s checks replaced (that should give you some idea of how long ago it was.) (The thieves took those but *not* his passport, thankfully).
I remember two things about that experience: one was the Florentine woman we ran into in the anteroom as we were waiting, who talked about how Florence had come to resemble Disneyland; the other was the two bored carabinieri who took our report – the one chain-smoking, the other, the fastest two-fingered typist in the west, incongruously wearing a “Michigan” sweatshirt (both of us had just been graduated from Michigan).
Ah, good times for two innocents abroad!
