I live about 40 miles from the West entrance to Glacier NP and decided to make what is likely my last convertible trip over Going to the Sun road. I have been driving or riding this 2-3 time a year for 17 years and it is always beautiful but Tuesday was the most dramatic.

There had been just enough snow to highlight the striations and structure of the mountains.

This looks threatening but soon broke up to big white clouds drifting through the peaks.

Still some color and even a few sad looking wild flowers. The aspen were unfortunately about a week from peak color.

The clouds were right down on the valley floor for the approach to the pass but began to break.

Top of Logan Pass aka GttS, 6600′ and the Continental Divide. It was about 38 and windy and the peaks were playing peek-a-boo in the clouds.
Temps for our trip ranged from 35 to 65. We just cranked up the heated seats and heater and stayed toasty with the top down.

Beautiful! It’s a beautiful park and that drive is spectacular.
We visited Glacier in July 1988 and GttS Road still had lots of snow and ice melting and running across the road. At one point everyone was stopped, pulled over to the side of the road so we did too, and way on the other side of the valley we could see little specks that we were told were mountain goats. Under the car next to ours was a marmot, looking longingly up into the underside of the car. Later we learned that they like one of the fluids and will bite the hoses to get to it. Coolant, I think. He was a pretty big fellow, the car (Jeep?) was one of those tall 4wheel drives so we had a good view.

@realbtl – Glacier is on our bucket list and you just pushed it up the line. Thank you for the gorgeous pix of a magnificent place. About the convertible, in my dotage (or perhaps because I can afford it), I have taken to renting them and do love them. It gives me the “dog out the window” experience.

Thanks folks, it is great living this close to the park. If at all possible visit Glacier in Sept, no crowds and beautiful weather (usually).

How’d I know it was Glacier only from the pic on Cole’s twitter feed? My memory ain’t what it used to be but I’d have to be deep in dementia not to recognize Logan Pass.
