Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

Wait, what?

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

I have other things to bitch about but those will have to wait.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

This really is a full service blog.

Decision time: keep arguing about the last election, or try to win the next one?

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Let the trolls come, and then ignore them. that’s the worst thing you can do to a troll.

The National Guard is not Batman.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

White supremacy is terrorism.

Radicalized white males who support Trump are pitching a tent in the abyss.

Anne Laurie is a fucking hero in so many ways. ~ Betty Cracker

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Let’s give it a Latin theme.

    Monsieur Periné Mi Libertad

It’s the theme song for a new Netflix drama. I’ll be watching telenovelas next.

I enjoyed watching him getting run out of one venue after another here in the formerly dark red parts of SoCal, along with his fellow loon. The fact that their rallies lost money was schadenfreudelicious.

Damn, this twitter thread is talking about how Boebert and the rest are failed actors recruited off of a website called explore talent.

Wow, that’s a hell of a Twitter thread. “Crisis actors” yet more projection. We don’t know who funded all these people with no obvious source of income.

@Enhanced Voting Techniques:  Moar Tax “Relief!” so bazillionaires can hire more fake activists…

There are a lot of wealthy people who have no civic pride, no shame, and no morality. More is never enough, like Mary Trump said.

@frosty: My bet, at least for LA, is developers.  They’re about the only reason TFG ever set foot in LA during his time in office for fundraisers.

    @frosty:

They weren’t paying them much. A lot of them came from Craigslist for $25-50 each and the actors’ websites Boebert and the loon who testified for Sydney whatsername about the rigged ballot counting were from was more of a “for only $249 you can be listed as a real actor, head shots extra,” scam deal than a real working actors hangout.

So it turns out the GOP is a cut-rate version of the scene in John Wick 2 where the eponymous anti-hero is called to meet The Manager in Central Park to confirm his Excommunication?

That involved global organised crime and fuck-ups by overly privileged rich-boys too.

@Mary G: You speak of your formerly red part of California. One thing that struck me in the 2018 was the number of Orange County congressional seats Democrats flipped (I saw that one or two were retaken by Republicans last year). I remember when Orange County was considered a Republican stronghold. I interested in your thoughts on how and why this red-to-blue shift happened. And also, Bill in Glendale’s thoughts, if he cares to give them.

I have seen Virginia go from red to purple to blue in 15 years. This phenomenon interests me, and I am curious as how it worked on the west coast. Or the “Inland Empire,” I should say. You both may be busy, but I can ask another time.

@Geminid: Late back to the thread, but will throw in my two cents. The OC went blue because  it stopped being all white.

The town I grew up in was a sundown town when we first moved here – everyone darker than a paper bag better be someplace else before twilight or get the crap beaten out of you and arrested for “resisting.”

That started to change in the 60s with the ramp-up of the Vietnam War. A lot of Marines came up from Camp Pendleton, not all of them white. At first they were restricted to a couple of blocks of bars around the bus station, but trickled out, and Marines stand up for Marines against townies, color be damned. And the cops didn’t fare well against Marines.

That was kind of the crack in the dam, along with the 19 people who admitted to voting Democrat, and liberal Republicans like my parents, who came from the South to flee horrible families and decided to leave the prejudice behind too. My mom and dad brought home all kinds of people in trouble to stay in our spare bedroom, many of them nonwhite, and forced my dad’s congregation to accept them or GTFO of the church.

So they did and it gradually just became normal. People who are my age have known Hispanics and other kinds of minorities personally for three generations now. All the white replacement shit just doesn’t compute as much here. We still have the bigoted 40-45% who live in gated communities and send their kids to segregated private schools, but they just seem sad to most of us.

@Mary G: That’s very interesting. Thanks. Demographic change has made a difference in Virginia as well. The state Republican party’s rightward march has also been a factor.

@Geminid: Demographic changes in Virginia have included more foreign born and second generation immigrants, and more college graduates. And more Yankees.

Hey, have a question for the hive mind/jackaltariat: I’m looking for a non-profit organization/charity which helps poor kids get into photography. I’m sure there is one but no idea what it might be. Suggestions?

@Enhanced Voting Techniques: I’m seeing a lot of people, particularly people who live in Southern California, arguing that this is less evidence of a shadowy conspiracy and more evidence that narcissists with borderline personality disorder are driven to try to become actors.

    @Mary G:

The OC went blue because  it stopped being all white.

That’s largely how it happened in Northern Virginia too, only with fewer Hispanics and more Asians and Middle Easterners. Also, Republicans started alienating high-education professional whites.

@Geminid: I lived in Anaheim for 9 years that seem in retrospect to have been during the tipping point for several cities behind the Orange Curtain. Anaheim is/was the home of Carl Karcher and a group of extreme RW men with lots of money; they supported the likes of Bob Dornan and John Schmitz,  We watched Santa Ana’s Hispanic population become voters, although that had started before we moved to Anaheim. I think Santa Ana’s Hispanic voters were the reason we got a Democratic Congressperson, Loretta Sanchez and now Lou Correa, in Bob Dornan’s old seat.

(The Inland Empire in California is Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Orange County is not inland, and includes several beach towns.)

I can see that, the money they get paid is pathetic.

Sort of Narcissists all the way down. Who ever paying for it obviously is unable to persuade people.
