    @beltane: The opposition is composed of full-on nutcases (remember, all of their anger is because americans might get better healthcare and that would somehow be evil), so whatever you think of as stalking isn’t one-tenth of what they’re doing. The people answering the phone will most likely be happy to hear from you.

    OK, now I called my republican congresscritter (Capito, WV) and told her I hoped she would surprise me and vote for the House bill. Said she might want to be on the right side of history on this one, and suggested she read the Tom Toles cartoon that showed repubs defending Obamacare against cost custs by Dems in 2 years time.

    Hmm. Congressman shuler nc” hasn’t made a decision yet since he hasn’t seen the final language of the bill. ” This is actually great progress over the last few calls I made. At least they didn’t go out of their way to remind me he voted no the last time. Call or fax people.

    If anyone from New Orleans is reading, call Rep. Cao at (202) 225-6636. He says he is voting no with Stupak, but I think he might be bendable – he is after all a Republican in a major Democratic city, and a reasonable guy from what I can tell. But when I call his office, I get the feeling he’s not taking much heat for voting against NOLA interests.

    Lipinski is still a no. Anyone else want to bet their job that we have fewer dems that support the president than dems to the right of Nelson on choice in IL 3? The logic escapes me.

    The poll wouldn’t let me vote again, since I already did this a few weeks ago. But just now, I re-contacted Loebsack (IA-2) and Harkin (both guaranteed Yes votes) and Grassley (guaranteed No vote) anyway.

    I just called Tammy Baldwin’s office. I was to that she supports healthcare reform but is waiting for the final language in the bill. I pressed a little more, and the very nice staffer said she was leaning toward yes. I paraphased back to her, “So if I understand her position, it is that, unless there is is something unexpected and horrible in the final bill, the Congresswoman will vote yes. Is that correct?” The staffer said yes. I then offered encouragement and support for a yes vote and thank the nice staffer. Woohoo, tentatively.

    My congressviper, Ben Chandler, told NPR this morning he is voting no because of the cost. He admits that people need health care reform but the cost is too high. He’s full of shit and I plan to politely tell him this after work today. What is really maddening is that he doesn’t have a republican opponent to threaten him. He could roll as the lone voice of reason in Ken-tuck.

    Not only did I call, but I am getting ready to spend my lunch hour with my compatriots from OFA, the local AFL-CIO affiliate unions, MoveOn, and SEIU at a rally for HCR at the local offices of Jason Altmire.

    Hope some Tea Baggers show up.

    I guess I could waste my time calling Lindsey Graham and Jim DeMint, but I don’t think I will. Henry Brown is my Rep and he’s a sure NO vote as well. It would be a waste of the government’s resources to cause him to use his franking privilege to write me yet another “I hear you, but” letter that completely misses whatever point I tried to make.

    I called my rep here in Mass. (Markey). I was told that he wont make a final decision until he sees the bill. So dont assume that you live in a safe district-call.

    I called my rep (OH-1, Driehaus) and got busy signals, shunted to voicemail (full, can’t leave a message), more busy signals. I tried his local office and his DC number; both were busy.

    It took seven tries to get thru.

    And he’s ambivalent. He ‘wants to support healthcare reform’ but he wants to see the final language because he has concerns about abortion and some of the special deals (thanks a lot, Ben Nelson) in the Senate bill.

    Both the local and DC office said that calls from the 1st District were running about 50-50. Driehaus has also apparently been targeted by a nationwide telephone campaign, and it’s not in support of HCR.

    I told them I hoped the Congressman would vote for the bill because it would be good for the country, good for me personally and good for the Democrats.

    I think he’ll do the right thing. If you live in Oh-1, please let him know how you feel.
