Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

Hell hath no fury like a farmer bankrupted.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

This chaos was totally avoidable.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

So fucking stupid, and still doing a tremendous amount of damage.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

Jack Smith: “Why did you start campaigning in the middle of my investigation?!”

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

He really is that stupid.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Wait, what?

I desperately hope that, yet again, i am wrong.

When you’re in more danger from the IDF than from Russian shelling, that’s really bad.

Good morning Juicers. Yes, I am up and having coffee then treadmill and off to work.

My office relocated last week. I went from a five minute commute to a 45 minute one.

I’m up this early to defend my property from the apparent return of the Vikings. I suppose Iceland had to fix its economy somehow.

So that’s how Norway manages such a large welfare state and high GDP per capita.

It’s been a while but considering the past week, how could I not do a new Assclowns of the Week?

Quick question: If magnitude of this spill is as bad as they think it, is safe to say that BP has caused more damage to the US, than any foreign army/terrorist organization in history? In terms of sheer dollars and physical damage, they’ve certainly eclipsed anything by Al-Queda.

In fact, the last foreign army to do this much damage to the US mainland was the Brits back in 1812.

Does this make them a candidate for a little “shock and awe?”

By “them” I mean, BP, not the Brits.

    @Der Blindschtiller:
It’s an open thread, so it’s all good.

ETA: just watching “This Week” and George Will gets his ass handed to him. Is this the first liberal-weighted roundtable ever?

couple a thoughts on the unpleasantness in the gulf.

•It was argued that while the lack of the acoustic switch, while showing a lax attitude, didn’t contribute to this mess because the switch just would have just worked on the same rams the subs couldn’t activate. Made sense at first but now I’m not convinced.

The issue is time. Hours passed before the subs got there. The switch could have been activated in minutes. The damage that prevented the blow out preventer from working could have occurred in the interim.

    • I read one explanation that was most telling, I thought.

One or two of the rams in the BOP work by crimping or shearing the pipe. The explanation was that if the portion of the pipe that was in the BOP was a section were two segments join, this wouldn’t work because the pipe wall is thicker there.

This is simply a matter of the size of the hydraulics and the accumulator (basically a gas bag that stores potential energy that powers the hydraulics when the pump isn’t running).

The thing was value engineered to work 95% of the time?

Oh, and by the way, your water hose has no effect on me, you should be using an ABC Extinguisher.

@Bad Horse’s Filly: That would be a travesty; I am best served with a sauce bourdelaise and demi-glace, and should be deboned. I mean, really. Dragons have no taste.

Before reading the caption I thought the photo indicated the Greenpeace-Japan whaler battles had entered a new, exciting phase.

I’m a bit disappointed with the real explanation.
