Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

I have other things to bitch about but those will have to wait.

Innocent people do not delay justice.

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

Dumb motherfuckers cannot understand a consequence that most 4 year olds have fully sorted out.

It is possible to do the right thing without the promise of a cookie.

Disappointing to see gov. newsom with his finger to the wind.

“I was told there would be no fact checking.”

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

Nothing says ‘pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

Is trump is trying to break black America over his knee? signs point to ‘yes’.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

One of our two political parties is a cult whose leader admires Vladimir Putin.

So very ready.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

The only way through is to slog through the muck one step at at time.

Every decision we make has lots of baggage with it, known or unknown.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Republicans do not trust women.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

This story would be amusing if we weren’t propping up this ineffective clown:

In his speech, which was interrupted by a rocket that exploded close by and an exchange of gunfire, forcing Mr. Karzai to tell his audience not to worry, he spoke directly to the Taliban, calling on them to join the government.

Within minutes, a larger explosion from another rocket shook the large tent where the gathering, known as a jirga, was being held.

Also, too, his police force is a Keystone Kops operation.

Can we fix the margins, or are they a mile under water?

Interesting times — Moshe Arens (3 time Minister of Defense and one-time Minister of Foreign Affairs), in Ha’aretz, pushing the “one-state solution” for the West Bank — making it part of Israel and extending citizenship.

What would happen if Israeli sovereignty were to be applied to Judea and Samaria, the Palestinian population there being offered Israeli citizenship? Those who, in Israel and abroad, consider the Israeli “occupation” of Judea and Samaria an unbearable evil should be greatly relieved by such a change that would free Israel of the burden of “occupation.” If the Palestinians in Judea and Samaria are given the right to vote in Israeli elections, like the Palestinians currently living in Israel, Israel would not cease to be a democracy. Nor would it cease to exist, although its demography would change significantly. However, Israel would face the serious challenge of absorbing the Palestinian population in Judea and Samaria into the fabric of Israeli society. Can Israel be expected to meet such a challenge?…
    __
…Adding another 1.5 million Muslims, the population of Judea and Samaria, to Israel’s Muslim population would of course make the situation considerably more difficult. Would a 30-percent Muslim minority in Israel create a challenge that would be impossible for Israeli society to meet? That is a question that Israeli politicians, and all Israelis – Jews and Arabs alike – need to ponder.
    __
Unlike the dire predictions heard so often, Israeli sovereignty over Judea and Samaria would not be the end of the State of Israel, nor would it mean the end of democratic governance in Israel. It would, however, pose a serious challenge to Israeli society. But that is equally true for the other options being suggested for dealing with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This option of Israeli sovereignty in Judea and Samaria merits serious consideration.

This approach, a binational state — a classic one among early international soshullist Zionists, by the way — has been dismissed in recent generations as impossible as it would fundamentally change the Jewish character of the state.

Presumably Gaza is to either keep its status as an imprisoned waste dump or Egypt is expected to pick up Israel’s castoffs.

[Note: Yes, there’s a big presumption here that this is entirely the choice of the Israeli policymakers, and unfortunately that’s probably an accurate assumption.]

I think a bi-national (multi-ethnic) state is inevitable at this point. Whether the transition is violent or not is still an open question, however.

That’s a dark form of ‘amusing’. Don’t get me wrong, I laughed too, once, and bitterly. We can’t fix Afghanistan and I wish we could.

The best thing that could happen to the government of Afghanistan would be for Karzai to get it.
He would be a martyr and would be replaced by somebody who was actually effective.
This is why the Taliban and other AGM (AntiGovernment Movement/Militia) haven’t gone after him.
